October 11, 2008 Link to this post Campaign Episode 1 - a closer look
So a couple of days ago, I posted a note about the Machinima Film Festival Awards, and pointed out that Campaign Episode 1 had gotten an honorable mention for 'Best Editing'. It was one of the few nominated films I hadn't heard of, so I followed the link from the Nominations page to watch it. The streaming link didn't seem to work... so I logged in to Vimeo to get the download link. (Vimeo lets you download HD versions of its hosted films - but you must create an account to do so.) The MP4 was listed as just under half a gigabyte... and 20 minutes long. Whoa. I passed, because Thursday was a pretty busy day. However, since then, I've found the time to watch this, and if you've got the 20 minutes and the bandwidth, I'd definitely recommend it. It uses Campaign footage (Tsavo Highway and Sierra 117) to tell a story of Spartan 171, in a universe that doesn't exactly match the one we know. VERY nice editing, and pretty deft machinima techniques; I found myself immersed in an unfamiliar story, even though I was fully acquainted with the surroundings. Visit the Vimeo page, create an account if you don't have one, and download the HD version (it's at the bottom of the page once you've logged in) - I think you'll like it. (Louis Wu 12:37:30 UTC)
October 9, 2008 Link to this post Machinima Film Festival Nominations
Sgt_Hartsock let us know that This Spartan Life has been nominated for two Mackies (the Machinima Film Festival awards) - it's up for Best Series, and Best Original Music. If you want to learn more, he's set up a club for the show at 1UP.com. Other Halo content up for Mackies this year: Smooth Few Films' Bag Boy (we mentioned it in February) has been nominated for Best Short Format, Best Voice Acting, and Best Writing, and Without Providence (a film I'd never seen, but which you can find on the DouGroup's website) is up for Best Cinematography. (Jonathan Quail, which used to be hosted at GamingTV, received an Honorable Mention in that category.) Blackstone [Log 1], from Dispatch Films (we mentioned it in July) is up for Best Sound Design and Best Editing. And finally, Campaign Episode 1, from William Urbina (another new one for me) received an Honorable Mention in the Best Editing category.

October 8, 2008 Link to this post With Apologies to Luke McKay
In a surprise return to comic-making, ZZoMBiE13 sent me Another Halo Comic Strip #113 today - it's a funny take on the RvB: Reconstruction machinima series. This doesn't mean AHCS is coming back regularly - but it DOES sound like there'll be one now and then - great to hear! (Louis Wu 19:24:19 UTC)
October 4, 2008 Link to this post More ZZoMBiE Reconstruction Art
ZZoMBiE13 continues to create artwork inspired by the RvB: Reconstruction machinima series. His latest offering is an imagining of a scene in Episode 6 - it's viewable at DeviantART, or in Wallpaper form right here. (He's also returned to work on an older image of the Meta - the sketch can be found here.) (Louis Wu 14:31:13 UTC)
September 16, 2008 Link to this post Not that simple!
Late, late last night, Red vs Blue: Reconstruction Episode 14 went live; the Freelancer program is beginning to be unveiled. As always, top-notch video editing, fantastic storyline, voice acting quality most machinima makers should be aspiring to. I'm not sure it's come through in my last few newsposts about Reconstruction, but I really like this series. I'm not alone. Give it a shot, if you haven't already. (Louis Wu 13:39:53 UTC)

DigitalPh33r has uploaded Part 5 of his Guide to Making Halo 3 Machinima to YouTube (other versions coming soon). This one has lots of tips to make your machinima look polished - camera placement, character motion, you name it. Twelve and a half minutes long. Thanks, Exanubisleader.

September 12, 2008 Link to this post Why we kill
Harabek found a rather massive Halo 3 machinima entitled 'Why we kill' over on YouTube - it's not his, nor does he know the creators, but he was impressed enough to bring it to our forum's attention. The message - that losing your humanity can be worse than losing your life - is one not often explored in Halo machinima, and though it's might be a little long, 'Why we kill' is an interesting piece. (Louis Wu 10:53:22 UTC)
September 6, 2008 Link to this post Final Moments
The newest piece of Halo 3 machinima from DigitalPh33r is a piece called 'Final Moments' - it's viewable on YouTube, and it's based on the story of the UNSC Marines' first encounter with a dangerous life form in the first Halo game. Done in the style of the Halo 1 Helmet-cam sequence, it shows a couple of hours of Eric Dennison's life. Nice use of Halo 3 locales! Thanks, Spartan Jag. (Louis Wu 18:50:10 UTC)
September 3, 2008 Link to this post Rock the Vote PSAs
Rooster Teeth put their latest series, Reconstruction, on hold this week, in order to release a pair of Public Service Announcements. These were finished and ready to go before they left for PAX last week, but they needed to wait until the HD versions were up and available on Xbox LIVE Marketplace before releasing them on their website - so they went live last night. Both of them address the 'Rock the Vote' initiative on LIVE - 'Rock the VETO' explains why voting is important (in a way that every person who's ever played in Matchmaking can relate to), and 'Election Night' shows you how every vote counts. Humor plus Halo Machinima can equal education! Go, RT! (Louis Wu 15:37:23 UTC)

August 28, 2008 Link to this post 28 Weeks Later In late July, Jamie98s released a trailer for 28 Weeks Later, his reconstruction of the movie of the same name in the Halo 3 engine. Today, he's proud to announce the full version - a monster film, 43 minutes long, weighing in at a bit over 350 mb in downloadable format. Here's Jamie's description: "Six months after the rage virus was inflicted on the population of Great Britain, the US Army helps to secure a small area of London for the survivors to repopulate and start again. The main focus is on a father reuniting with his 2 children, whose mother was infected by the virus." 43 minutes might seem absurdly long for a Halo machinima, but Jamie cut half the movie to make it fit (though he did so in a way that kept the story fully understandable). It's an amazing piece of work; he's captured the tension and emotion of the original, while living within the confines of the Halo 3 environment. You can download it from our servers in either WMP9 format (366 mb) or QuickTime format (359 mb) - we rarely serve files this large, so I can't promise downloads won't be slow. If you don't want to wait, or you can't handle the larger version, Jamie98s should have a streaming version on his site at some point soon. Two thumbs up! (Louis Wu 14:54:28 UTC)
August 28, 2008 Link to this post Willingly Insane
Kido Badtower stopped by to announce his machinima series 'Willingly Insane' - he's already created 9 episodes of Season 1, and 4 episodes of Season 2, but he's remaking the Season 1 vids. All eps are hosted at YouTube. Go see what you think! (Louis Wu 11:08:52 UTC)
August 25, 2008 Link to this post G.R.I.E.F. Trailer You might remember Smooth Few Films - they've been making machinima for quite some time (with lots of accolades), and have dipped their toes in the Halo 3 world (The Over-Achiever, The Bag Boy, The GunStop Way) - looks like they're back, with a trailer for an upcoming project called 'G.R.I.E.F'. As usual, high production values, huge potential - looking forward to the actual series! Huzzah! Thanks, Rosco-128. (Louis Wu 12:56:01 UTC)
August 24, 2008 Link to this post Arby 'n' the Chief S3E02: Wedding Will Ludwig was the first to point out the latest Arby 'n' the Chief episode, but Xmoosev3 provided a link that gives you creator notes, and links to both Machinima.com and YouTube versions. The video itself is just over 8 minutes long, and shows what happens when Arby and the Chief go to a Halo wedding. I gotta say, it was pretty funny. I feel almost bad saying that. But it was. August 19, 2008 Link to this post RvB: Reconstruction Chapter 11
Rooster Teeth has released Chapter 11 of Red vs Blue: Reconstruction - it's getting harder and harder every week to point out how this series has fantastic production values and top-notch effects - but every week, it proves it's still there at the top of the Halo machinima heap. The Reds and the Blues are faced with a devastating attack from the Meta - can they figure out how to stop the juggernaut? BlueNinja kicked off a discussion of the episode on our forum. (Louis Wu 12:49:58 UTC)
August 18, 2008 Link to this post Rustlers Machinima Music Video Contest - Results
Machinima.com/UK had a music video contest - put one of two Jonathan Coulton songs (Bacteria, Todd the T1000) to music, using any game you want, win goodies. The winners were filmed with World of Warcraft and GTA: San Andreas - but Halo was used for fully half of the entries - and I really liked FireDragon04's entry (he's the one who told us about the contest). Go watch! (Louis Wu 17:40:33 UTC)
August 18, 2008 Link to this post DigitalPh33r's Guide to Making Halo 3 Machinima: Part 3
DigitalPh33r has released Part 3 of his Guide to Making Halo 3 Machinima - it covers scriptwriting, building sets, and creating character models, and runs a bit over 8 minutes. Thanks to Exanubisleader for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 13:30:08 UTC)
August 14, 2008 Link to this post Lower the Guns - looking for your support
Dragoncoals pointed out a video on YouTube promoting a Bungie.net Group that wants weapon-lowering to be enabled in Halo 3 on Xbox LIVE (currently, you can only do it offline). While I believe that the goal is not one that can be accomplished by this sort of lobbying, the demonstration in this video (the same short machinima story, shown with and without weapon-lowering) is well-done. Bungie's done their own thinking about this issue, and my guess is that if the functionality hasn't been added to AU2, coming next month, we'll probably never see it - but it's clear that Bungie thinks about machinimators. I don't think a several-hundred-person boycott of Xbox LIVE gameplay is going to make the point that a year's worth of lobbying has failed to make. However, if you disagree, you should watch the video, join the group, and add your voice to the cause! (Louis Wu 13:27:10 UTC)
August 11, 2008 Link to this post Reality Firestorm12 stopped by yesterday with links to 'Reality' Parts 1 and 2 - it's a new Halo 2-based machinima project from Halopen Films. His forum post contains links to the Halopen website and a site for the series itself, as well, if you'd like more information about what you watched. (Spoilers on the Reality site, so watch the segments first.)

August 8, 2008 Link to this post Grind Rider - Official Trailer JustAnotherFan pointed out a post on Bungie.net advertising the Grind Rider trailer - a Halo-based Western. Looks fun... but you'll have to wait until October for the actual machinima! (Louis Wu 22:57:04 UTC)
August 8, 2008 Link to this post Alliance: Episode 1
Insabul pointed out Alliance: Episode 1, kicking off a new machinima series. Goals seem to be pretty ambitious - it remains to be seen if they'll achieve these goals. (Louis Wu 14:30:31 UTC)
July 22, 2008 Link to this post It only counts if you call it.
Red vs Blue: Reconstruction Chapter 8 has been posted over at Rooster Teeth - this series just keeps getting better. These guys are taking machinima to a whole new level - I'm not sure how long I can say that about each new episode, but I really am impressed. Go watch. (I'll echo BlueNinja's "wow".)
