OpenSauce 2.0 SDK Release Candidate
Connor Sauve let us know that the OpenSauce SDK 2.0, a package of tools from Kornman to help folks build Halo Custom Edition content, has been released - swing by Modacity to read about what it does, and to grab a copy. If you do ANY dabbling in the creation of content for Halo Custom Edition... you should grab this. (Louis Wu 10:45:07 UTC)

Come play!
Lots of people would love to play more Halo 3 Matchmaking - but don't enjoy throwing themselves into the lion's den that is Matchmaking without friends. And sometimes you want to hook up for Campaign games, or customs, but your friends list is sparse. Never fear - HaloCharts has got your back! They've got a new feature called 'I want to play!' - you can connect with other HaloCharts members (who, presumably, are a cut above the average random population of Xbox LIVE) and play with people with the same goals you have. Nice! Read all the details at Bungie.net. (Louis Wu 17:45:11 UTC)

Halo Custom Edition Update - July 2009
Dennis Powers sent us a Halo Custom Edition update from Halomaps - more than 100 files were added during July, including the CMT SPv2 beta (mentioned earlier today), the Ring of Life videos (mentioned the last couple of Mondays), and some new maps - single-player maps like Rio Firefight and Salisp, and MP maps like Abandonment, Paradis Perdu, and Destiny. Go check 'em all out! (Louis Wu 20:18:40 UTC)

CMT SPv2 A10 Public Beta
Dratt, on our forum, and TheGhost, via email, were nearly simultaneous about letting our community know about a new release of the Custom Mapping Team's SPV2 mod. You can check out the public beta by downloading the first map, The Pillar of Autumn, at Modacity. (You will, of course, need Halo: Custom Edition, a free add-on to HaloPC.) Dratt also pointed out a mirror at Halomaps, and a few screenshots he cherry-picked from XFire. (Louis Wu 12:39:51 UTC)

BungLog Razzmatazz
Lots of new content for you this afternoon at Bungie.net:

  • Apparently, the Zoxin It Up! podcast didn't happen as it was supposed to last Friday; it's been rescheduled for tomorrow, Friday, July 31 at 9 pm EST.
  • Machinicast.com released their first annual Machinima Awards show - we mentioned back in early June, when they were looking for community votes. Go see who won!
  • Joeski and friends played a bunch of custom games last Friday - and filmed some of the more memorable moments. Swing by to watch Fustoms Friday 7/24.
  • Phurion's back with a new montage - it's called 'BOOM', and it features some very nicely-timed (though at times really hard-to-watch) gameplay. Go check out his boom boom, in HD.
  • The ViDoc released this morning, Desperate Measures, can now be found in the ODST Field Guide - streaming versions of the video are now available, along with the downloadable ones.
  • Homeboyd903 created a pretty cool map he calls Backdraft - and urk was there to get the lowdown on the map and how it plays, just for you.

Whew - you leave for a few hours, and BAM said the lady! (Louis Wu 19:56:25 UTC)

Customizing a Legendary Helmet
PsH Bling decided to make his Legendary Helmet a little more personalized; first her removed the plastic liner (so that it fit on his head), and then started in on the paint job (pic 1 | pic 2). He's thinking about adding LEDs soon. (Louis Wu 14:52:26 UTC)

It's Thursday, Baby!
Cool stuff in the Bungie Blog this afternoon:

  • The latest Double XP Weekend is live now - in honor of the signing of the US Declaration of Independence, it's 4th of July Weekend, with Flag, Rockets, and VIP. Get to playin'!
  • Tyrant continues challenging you to complete sections of Halo 3 on 'Mythic' difficulty (Solo, Legendary, All Skulls On), and offering you Recon armor for doing so. This week's map: Tsavo Highway. His 2.0 walkthrough covering the level should be online by tomorrow - giving you plenty of time to study it and get yourself through the level in record time. Go read all the details!
  • There's another Community Cartographers feature - this one highlights a map called 'Tartarus', from Sikamikanico - go see why he made it, and why you should add it to your Custom Games rotation!

Lots of good stuff for filling up your Thursday afternoon! (Louis Wu 20:00:23 UTC)

The Community Marches On
Some goodies from the BungLog™ today:

  • The Hope Unto Dawn charity event undertaken by Facility B5D was a success - over $2000 was raised for the Child's Play charity, and fun was had by a lot of people. A 'Supertage' (screenshots, clips, and pics commemorating the event) is linked, along with the thank-you message from the receiving charity. (Actually, the thank-you message redirects to msn.com; I'd guess B5D deep-linking is frowned upon. You can read it by visiting this forum post.)
  • A couple of Forge groups got together for some friendly custom games, and wrote the results up, Halo Humpday-style.
  • Bryan Simon has another song online - this one is a remix (well, rewrite) of Beyonce's Halo. If you don't know the original song, you should listen to it so you know how good Bryan's tribute is!

What would I do without urk? (Wait, I know... cry less. That man is mean to me.) (Louis Wu 18:04:18 UTC)

Free Gold Weekend... for Halo 3
If you're an Xbox LIVE member with a Silver (free) account, you might be interested to learn that this weekend is a Free Halo 3 weekend - all accounts, Gold AND Silver, can play online! This situation is active until Monday, April 13, at 12 pm ET - so get going and play some Halo 3 for nothin'! Thanks to KP, who is putting in an overtime request for the extra work he had to do to nail down this info. Update: Looks like Ranked playlists are not included. GrifballHigh
NOKYARD created a custom Grifball arena... in Sandbox's Sky Bubble. Gameplay gets the added twist of 'leave the arena, you die'. Go watch some video over at Grifball Hub, courtesy of LBCountry. Update: looks like Grifball Hub has gone down - this got front-paged at Bungie.net, too. If you'd like to see the movie, we've mirrored it. (Louis Wu 18:41:30 UTC)

Get Your Game On
Jeff Hartt pointed out this Digg post showing off a funny example of crowdsourcing at Amazon - in the 'Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought' section of a page for condoms, the poster found Halo 2 high up on the list. (I checked the page today, and it's gone entirely... but it was definitely there last night.) Hartt points out that this sort of connection would imply that American gamers see things a little differently than their UK counterparts... (Louis Wu 17:58:27 UTC)

Adam Podcast 4 - Making a Marine Helmet
Adam Grumbo let us know that his Podcast #4 is now up on YouTube. (The first three, which we didn't know about, are in his YouTube channel if you'd like to watch them.) This focuses on making a Marine helmet (using the ODST helmet we mentioned yesterday)... and also contains a pretty cool contest that has a custom-made AR as a prize. (You'll have to watch the podcast for contest details.) Great to watch, even if you're not a helmet builder! (Louis Wu 14:46:36 UTC)
