Gamers for Giving 2010
Remember Zach Wigal, the guy who went and started an entire charity organization when his school wouldn't let him hold a Halo tournament there? The group he founded - Gamers Outreach Foundation - is back with another Gamers for Giving event on May 1, in Ann Arbor - with money raised to go to Mott Children's Hospital. Gamers 4 Giving 2009
An interview in a recent issue of The Blue Skittle, with Zach Wigal, a gamer who turned a bad experience into the inspiration for some really good work (search our news for details, or read the interview), reveals a tournament coming up at the end of February at Eastern Michigan University. $1000 cash and Recon armor are on the line for winners. Gamers for Giving - a success!
Zach Wigal, of the Gamers Outreach Foundation (search our news for more details), let us know that the Gamers for Giving event they held a couple of weeks ago went swimmingly - over 600 participants and spectators were present, and $4000 was raised for a local branch of the Autism Society of America. Gamers Doing Good Things
Last March, we reported a story about Zach Wigal, who tried to set up a Halo tournament at his high school - but got shut down at the last minute by people who misunderstood what he was trying to do. There was a followup in April, in which Zach had turned those negative feelings around and was starting a non-profit group to raise awareness and money, and another one when that group's website went live. He's back - with a huge tournament planned for late February. It's not Halo-only, but there will be a 2v2 Halo 3 tourney with a $1000 grand prize, and all the money raised will go to a local branch of the Autism Society of America. You can read about the event on their site, and register for the event at MPCon, a LAN group that's been putting on big LANs for a while. Congrats to Zach for following through with this! (If you're a company that's looking to sponsor worthy gaming causes, they're looking for corporate sponsorship, so that the money they raise from players can go straight to the charity. Back at the end of March, we posted about Zach Wigal's dealings with local school, civic, and law enforcement officials in trying to organize a Halo 2 tournament. An event that, beyond the regular LAN hawtness would've also let the local youth feel connected with their township - heck, even the local Baptist church planned to setup a booth to reach out to today's hip console-playing crowd. Long story short - folks that feel Halo 2 embodies all that is *bad* in our society put a kibosh on it - it didn't come to pass - and due to it being shutdown at the last minute Zach and his cohorts lost a bunch of money. Now we can sit and wallow in frustration (or pursue litigation), or we can follow Zach's lead in turning this around and shoving our goodwill right back into the faces of those that think they know better. To that end he has created a non-profit group called Halo For Hunger (not to be confused with the one-off LAN event from a few months back). It's slowly getting off the ground but you can visit his myspace page and keep up with his blog, and even hit the paypal donate button there and throw him a buck or two. (His group is aiming for $15K, but I really think that's lowballing it) And if you can spare a few minutes, check out the podcast from FreeFM 97.1, Michigan's PWNED Radio (things can't be THAT bad in the USA if there's a *weekly* 2 hour FM radio show dedicated to video games and the industry!) Look for the podcast titled Halo Haters. Listen as Zach explains how it all went down and the awesomeness when Marty O'Donnell sends you an email in support.
