NYT Online looks at video game cinematics Kudos to Jon Chang, who points out a Halo mention in a New York Times Online article on cinematics in video games. (You'll need to sign up for a (free) account to be able to see this.) The article discusses 'parallels between the movie market and the game market', and points to Halo as an example: In Halo, a futuristic Earth-versus- Them shooter and strategy game scheduled for release early next year by Bungie, the computer-generated preview that sets up the game lasts for nine minutes.
An interesting read, overall... makes me drool for the work that Joe Staten and Marty O'Donnell are doing right now! (Louis Wu 18:26:46 UTC) (permalink)
Halo to accompany XBox release? In a reply to a reader's letter at the MSXBox site it was reported that Halo might be one of the titles to accompany the Xbox launch. Here's the fullreply to the readers question: The Xbox will hit the UK around the same time it is released to the rest of the world. No more reading about experiences of gamers from other countries who get systems earlier than the UK. While the launch list for games is not finalized, it seems the most likely games, according to early indications, that will accompany the Xbox launch are Halo, New Legends, Oddworld : Munch's Oddysee, and several Microsoft sports titles.
HBO spin: Halo may actually be bundled with XBox which makes sense since it's a Microsoft title. Also since you won't be able to play Halo without the Xbox hardwareit's certainly consumer friendly to throw in a few games as well. (Ding 11:53:58 UTC) (permalink)

HCC says 'Please stay away!' Ouch... Griffon writes that Halo Command Central has been flooded with visitors since they put up their Halo MP3, and ask that folks not visit for a while. (Seems to me that ANY mention at all is gonna make folks want to go see the damage... try to resist the temptation.) We apologize for any trouble we caused by actually mentioning this file. (Louis Wu 19:37:47 UTC) (permalink)
Books for sale... early Thanks to Eric Meyer, who posted to our forum a clarification of how Amazon.com lists books. Although the actual method is pretty close to what folks have been speculating, it's nice to see some harder facts. Bottom line - don't look for that Sybex Strategy Guide any time soon, though it most likely WILL get published eventually. (Louis Wu 15:37:02 UTC) (permalink)
Halo SETI Team 7 day stats posted Dink!... The Halo SETI Marines fall another notch in the Battle of the Teams, thanks in large part to the disappearance of Oddot, and almost 1400 units. Welcome, though, to the new members - ReddyStupidity, Dr. Gough, OneWhoKnows - who brought almost 1000 new units with them. With work, we'll begin climbing again... but the team needs to crunch to win! The gory details can be found on the 7 day stats page. (Louis Wu 15:30:56 UTC) (permalink)

Xbox, Xbox... that's not an Xbox Wow... somehow we missed this last week, but it seems an image has been making the rounds, purportedly a leaked shot of an Xbox. Daily Radar has gotten word from Carrie Cowan, PR manager for Microsoft's Game Division, that this is totally false. Ack... by the time we hear the rumors, they've been disproved! (Louis Wu 03:30:43 UTC) (permalink)

Halo: Sybex's Official Strategies and Secrets at Amazon.com Hmm. We know we've seen this somewhere before... but we can't for the life of us remember where. Anyway, it's news here, so we'll post it. Amazon.com is selling Halo: Sybex's Official Strategies and Secrets, listed as being published on January 22, 2001. (Yeah, right.) It's written by Bart Farkas, who wrote both the Myth and Myth II Strategy Guides. It's even listed as having 272 pages (which would suggest that it's already mostly written). It's obviously premature, but its mere existence is intriguing, no? (Louis Wu 02:06:07 UTC) (permalink)

Telephone News Experiment - Successful! Okay, we couldn't let this pass... it's just too convoluted. :) On Thursday, Matt Soell posted a short message to our forum confirming that Bungie wouldn't have a booth at MacWorld SF this year. Rampancy.net picked up on this post yesterday, and included a front-page news post about it. Less than an hour later, MacLedge picked up on this news post, and wrote up their own news post. This, in turn, was picked up by Mac Halo, Inside Mac Games' new affiliate Halo website... they didn't follow it any farther back than MacLedge. Here's where it gets fun. IMG picked up the story as well... from Mac Halo. They credit Mac Halo with the info (and mention nobody else). Their post was made roughly 24 hours after Matt's original post, and had passed through 3 intermediate sites. Amazingly enough, with this game of Telephone News, the IMG piece is accurate with respect to what Matt wrote originally. Nice going, all! Next week we'll try to add two more news sites to the chain, and see if the original message still stays clean. (Louis Wu 21:55:01 UTC) (permalink)
Bungie's Letters to the Webmaster updated Kudos to Finch, who pointed out (on our forum and by email) that Bungie has updated its Letters to the Webmaster section. Fear and Lighting Matt's weekly Halo update (over at R.net this week) contains some juicy gameplay details: The AI is already good enough to kill Jason and Chucky, no easy task.

Xbox talk highlights Kudos to Dan Rudolph, who went to a Microsoft talk on the Xbox last night, and posted some highlights on our forum. Mostly hardware stuff... but this line popped out at me: While the Xbox won't ship with a keyboard, there may be one at some point.
Seems Brian Schmidtt (Audio and Media Director for the Xbox, and the man giving the talk) and Seamus Blackley (Manager of the Xbox Advanced Technology Group) - and J. Allard (General Manager for Xbox development), for that matter - have some disagreements about what may and may not ever appear. (The latter two gentlemen have said in no uncertain terms that the Xbox will NEVER have a keyboard.) We can always hope! (Louis Wu 15:17:36 UTC) (permalink)
Mac Halo asks - Mac, PC, Xbox? Jay Swartzfeger, maintainer of the new Mac Halo site, writes to let us know that they have a new survey up for you to vote on - 'What platform will you purchase Halo for?' (Given that this is a Mac-centric site, we're not sure how scientific the poll is... but hey. :) ) Swing by and vote for your favorite! (Louis Wu 14:52:07 UTC) (permalink)
bungie.net gets a new interface designer A warm welcome to David Candland, the newest member of Bungie's online team - he's officially "Interface Designer", so he'll likely be working on making bungie.net more friendly to everyone. That doesn't have IMMEDIATE relevance to Halo fans... but when Halo DOES get to the point where bungie.net is important, what's in place will help a lot. Good luck, David! (You can read his announcement on bungie.net right now.) (Louis Wu 14:48:23 UTC) (permalink)

Fan Fiction section updated $erial-ki!!A was going to release the next chapter of his ongoing Halo saga next month, as a Christmas offering to the community... but his plans changed. Is Tamte doing it, or not? As seen on the Marathon's Story page... the latest Inside Mac Games CD (volume 8 number 3 - IMG doesn't seem to date their CDs, although file creation dates are all in August of this year) contains a tidbit on Peter Tamte's publishing company. There's been much speculation about who will be doing the Mac port of Halo, when the time comes... and in all interviews up to this point, Tamte (and others) has stopped short of saying that his company will be involved. However, the IMG article is quite clear: Look for Halo for the Mac to be published through Tamte's new company.
Does IMG know something others don't? Or was this just jumping the gun? (Remember, this was written in August, even though it's the most recent IMG CD available.) Curious... (Louis Wu 10:26:54 UTC) (permalink)

Seamus Blackley talks to Gamespot Australia Seamus Blackley, that whacky engineer behind the Xbox, talked to Gamespot Australia about the Xbox recently... he's really pushing the idea that this is a gaming machine ONLY. However, for folks who were afraid that they'd be limited to TV resolutions... But yeah, television is one we're not too fond of either, in terms of standards. So we output pretty much every video signal known to man.
That should cover your average gamer, eh? And in case you thought old Seamus didn't have a sense of humor: We actually toyed with the idea at the (US, X-Box unveiling) Game Developer's Conference, when we announced X-Box on stage, to have a button in one of our demos that went through a Blue Screen. Just for fun, because it would cause everybody to have a heart attack. And then say "Oh, just joking!" and then go on with it.
Swing by and read the whole interview... the guy's enthusiasm is infectious. (There's a brief mention of 'Gigabit Ethernet in the Xbox' in the context of LAN play... but check this story out for a more interesting rumor.) (Louis Wu 00:23:46 UTC) (permalink)

Matt be testing us Matt be testing us in his latest forum post! The "weapon ideas" comment was intentionally super-ultra-mega-vague, even for me. Think in terms of secondary abilities and that may help narrow it down a bit. :-)

IMG's Mac Halo comes online Another Halo news site on the scene... Inside Mac Games has launched Mac Halo, an 'IMG affiliate dedicated to delivering the latest news on Bungie's upcoming award-winning game.' Halo SETI Team 7 day stats posted The Halo SETI Marines continue to crunch over 350 units a day, but the SETI server is overloaded enough that there's no easy way to see how they're doing, relative to other teams. Regardless, they continue to hunt that Covenant horde... with luck, it'll turn up soon! DarthFlounder takes la Crunch Honneur again (surprise!), and Orion Legacy narrowly edges out Traxus2 for the Frogblast award. Details can be found on the 7 day stats page. (Apologies for the delay in processing today - last week's pages mysteriously disappeared off the server, and needed to be recreated from raw files before today's could be crunched.) 'Waves smashing against the shoreline...' Who says they don't listen to fans? Two subjects discussed recently on our forum have been new weapons, and limb-specific damage. In this week's Halo update, Matt Soell mentions a new weapon that is suspiciously similar to a suggestion made on this very forum in days past.
He also mentions 'secret beasties', and 'limb-specific impact animations'. Oooh! Check out all the details for yourself... it's a juicy one! (Louis Wu 03:31:16 UTC) (permalink)

Another interview about PlanetSide - lots of details Again, not totally Halo-related, but PlanetSide has been generating quite a bit of buzz recently on some of the Halo sites... Kevin McCann gave another interview yesterday, this time to PC IGN, and in it he does a much better job of describing the gameplay that folks can expect from PlanetSide. Very intriguing... but the overall concept is different enough from Halo that these two might not even compete. Check it out! (Louis Wu 02:44:16 UTC) (permalink)

Planetside - where Halo should go? Thanks to Br'fin, who noticed an interview with Kevin McCann, producer and lead designer for Planetside, a Massively Multiplayer FPS coming next year, over at Daily Radar. (How many dangling participles can YOU spot in that sentence?) While the graphics don't look anywhere near as good as Halo's, the gameplay sounds an awful lot like what folks have been wishing for from Halo. Definitely worth a read. Halo Webmaster Interviews up at MPZ or HCC Hmm. Griffon dropped us a line to let us know that the MPZ Webmaster Interviews are being mirrored at Halo Command Central. That's good to know... and for those of you saying, "What Webmaster Interviews?" you didn't miss anything, because the MPZ boys forgot to let us know they were up. :) (The Halo MultiPlayer Zone site decided to ask a few questions of some of the folks running Halo sites. I guess they've gotten them online.) So: if you're interested in reading these Q&A sessions, drop by MPZ or HCC to read questions 1 and 2. (Question 3 is coming tomorrow.) XBOX365 gets wind of a leak? As noted at Haloplayers, XBOX365 has put up a story in which 'Inside Informant' provides details of the finalized Xbox design. Now, take this as you will - read the comments below the story for some, um, alternative views... but one thing is clear to me - in the news post we put up last week, we seriously misinterpreted one of the features of the Xbox - the expansion port devoted to real-time speech has nothing to do with peer-to-peer communication; it will allow the Xbox to accept voice commands from the user. We're back to square one in terms of net communication. Anyway, go read the whole story - true or not, it's entertaining. (Louis Wu 20:15:34 UTC) (permalink)
Halo SETI Team 7 day stats posted The Halo SETI Marines continue on their 350+ units/day pace, holding steady in 77th place on the Overall Teams list. CVG looks at the Xbox controller Interesting... there's been some discussion recently about how the controls for Halo will work, and doubt has been expressed that decent teamplay can happen without a keyboard. Computer and Video Games have been able to play with a prototype of the Xbox controller, and one feature stands out pretty clearly: Microsoft's pad will have two expansion ports, one of which will be focused on real-time speech.
If you can talk to your teammates, who needs a keyboard? (Louis Wu 21:48:42 UTC) (permalink)
