Halo3 Campaign
Bypassing the Phantom dropship scene on Tsavo
Highway/Legendary

Even for experienced Halo players, there is one scenario on Tsavo Highway that is somewhat difficult on Legendary difficulty, although it is not too bad on Normal or even Heroic. The scene is just roughly past midway through the level called "Tsavo Highway". Sergeant Johnson encourages Master Chief to "push on to Voi" via his intercom. Master Chief has abandoned a Warthog due to an impassable gap in the highway. Moving on foot, he passes under a bridge and then the difficult part begins. He is met against a very large detachment of Brutes and Grunts, in a small valley, with a Wraith waiting at the other end of the bottleneck.

After dispatching with the first wave of enemies, a Phantom then comes swooping down, dropping onto the same stage, even more Brutes, some with Fuel Rod Guns. The main problem with this difficult scene is that, in short, the availability of ranged weapons is somewhat sparse. I accidentally stumbled onto a way to totally avoid the second wave of deployed enemies after trying desperately to get past this difficult scenario.

Note that this is not the 'capture the Wraith at the other end of the valley' method. Quite literally, using the extreme edge of the map, and a ring from the Space Elevator as cover, you will be able to trigger a checkpoint, making the Phantom and all the enemies that were waiting for you in the valley simply vanish. You never have to fight them. Simply attempting to push forward on any of the main paths will NOT trigger the checkpoint. I have no idea why this is so - All I know is that one second I was trying to dodge a Chopper, and the next thing I knew all of the enemies (except the two Choppers ahead) disappeared, then the Pelican came in, dropping another two Warthogs.

Just follow this step by step guide with pictures. I hope that this is clear enough to understand. I added as many suggestions as I could possibly recall from playing back the Saved Film.

Step 1. You need a Grav Lift. In the structure pictured below, jump out of the Warthog and grab the Grav Lift. This is one of the three small structures seen right after you hear "Someone, anyone, I am *static* Kilos from Tsavo Highway" over your radio. This is the first small structure on the right hand side. Also suggest having an alien sniper or full BR handy for the trip.

Step 2. Use Grav Lift to "jump" the Wathog over the gap. This is actually rather easy to do. Simply jump out of the Hog, deploy the Grav lift in the location shown in the image, back the Warthog up a little, and drive it forward right over the Grav Lift. The image below shows the Warthog 'just lifting' off the ground - in practice the Hog actually goes far higher than the upper edge of this image. It may take a few tries (revert to Saved), but just aim for the middle of the other span (avoid the light fixtures) and there's nothing to it. Remember, I am terrible at 'tricking' so if I can do it, just about anybody can - no special skillz needed for this one.

Step 3. Use Warthog gun, but keep it back from the 'front line'. The wraith and especially the Brutes with the Fuel Rod Guns will make short work of your smuggled prize otherwise. Note that, for some reason, the UNSC NPC's will NOT board nor drive the Warthog.

to this scene.

Step 4 - Dispatch as many enemies as possible, suggest going to the top of the bridge, where you will find a sniper rifle and other assorted goodies. Important - Do not kill ALL of them, just as many as possible to thin out resistance.

Step 5 - As soon as you see the Phantom coming, drive like hell to the other side. The Phantom has onboard a very large number of Brutes. Just drive right down the middle, running over anything in your path. With luck the Wraith will not get a good shot at you.

Step 6 - Drive behind the nearest Space Elevator ring, just past the 'valley' on the right hand side. You will notice that there is a Brute in the tower there, sporting a Carbine, and also there are two Choppers waiting for you just up the road a little ways (not shown). The wraith may or may not be heard. Jump out of the Warthog, and using the back of the Space Elevator ring, walk up as far as you can go without being spotted by the Choppers (in image 6a - Walk from bottom of image to top). Just walk back and forth a few times, and if all goes well, then every enemy, the Wraith, the Phantom will all be gone from the Valley. You will know you have succeeded if you see a Checkpoint Message (see image 6b) and you hear new, previously unheard radio chatter.

Step 7 - Regroup with new Friendly Forces in 'Valley'( backtrack around the corner). You will notice that the Pelican has dropped off some new hardware, and you have new troops to help you. The two Choppers will follow you back, but when they turn the corner, this is what they will see (surprise!)

Image 7 - Brute Choppers wonder where you are going - only to find a new

As a final suggestion - The NPC's will continue to ignore your original Warthog that you jumped over on the bridge earlier. You will probably need to drive, ride or gun in one of the new vehicles.

Ending thoughts. I hope that this may help some of you who are having a tough time with this particular scene. Again I want to say that I found this by accident, although I originally thought that simply 'driving like hell' past the entire scene would be doable (which, in all seriousness, is pretty damn close to impossible). So far, as of this writing, I have only played up to Tsavo on Legendary. I believe that this was easily the hardest scene to finish on Legendary up until this point in the game. I cannot guarantee that this will work for you, or even readily explain what happened, all I know is that it does, and is repeatable.

Take care, and have a great Thanksgiving 2007.
