"UNSC Pelican 415 here, what do you need sir?" the stern voice of the pilot spoke into the receiver of the radio.
"To be blunt, I think we need a little bit of everything," Captain Hemlock chuckled hesitantly.
"Well, I wish I could give you everything, it looks like you're in some shit over there," the pilot said again.
"True, do you got a Warthog on you?"
"Yes sir."
"Good, going to need that; how about some Marines?"
"That's what I'm here for."
"Music to my ears."
"He's a fucking awesome pilot too!" a Marine shouted from within the Pelican.
Captain Hemlock chuckled, "Alright, but them down behind the barrier."
"Roger." The Pelican craft lowered down behind a long, thick concrete wall, smothered in plasma burns. The camp looked awful, definitely not the place for a Captain. Medics rushed over to a tent that looked just from the outside that it was a hospital, or at least a morgue. The Pelican turned 180 degrees so the rear end was facing the large camp. Captain Hemlock rushed out to meet them, pistol in hand.
"How you boys doing today?" he gave them a hardy grin.
"Just fine sir!" the whole squad sounded out and saluted.
"Good, that's something I haven't heard a Marine say in months," he returned the salute, and turned over to their leader. "What's your name son?"
"Corporal Peterson, sir!" the tall, lanky man said.
"A Corporal! I expected some experience!" he exclaimed.
"Or, you could talk to him," the Corporal pointed over to a SPARTAN IV standing behind them all.
"Holy Hell," the Captain walked over to the SPARTAN, then noticed the color of his armor, blood red. "Who you with son?"
"Right now I'm with them," he returned the pointed finger.
"I see," the Captain said, and pondered for a moment.
"What are living conditions here?" the SPARTAN asked.
"One meal a day, little sleep, man power minimal, little sleep. Those bastards attack us everyday. The Covenant don't leave many alive," the Captain grimaced.
"I see, that's fine with me," he looked at his squad, "I just don't know about them."
He stepped out in front of his squad, and asked, "Can you handle this pussy's?"
"Sir, yes, sir!"
"That's what I thought," he turned back to the Captain, as the Pelican lifted off, Warthog deployed.
"Let me show you to your barracks."
They walked through the huge camp, and saw almost more hospitals then mess halls or command tents. The hospitals had blood splattered on every wall, inside and out, and every site of the inside, made even the SPARTAN cringe. Marines bleeding, missing limbs, some with blood still flowing out of them.
"Our best surgeon is a teacher now, that's how bad we need medics. You didn't happen to bring any with you did you?"
"No, I take with me."
"Do you have a name son?" the captain pondered.
"Some call me Pyro, others call me Hyde, and of course they call me-" he was cut off.
"Jake! Covenant are attacking the south wall!" a Marine said.
"Jake?" the Captain queried.
"That's my name, I gave it to myself, didn't feel right without one," he turned to the wall.
Suddenly, a huge plasma blast found a place in the camp, scattering body parts everywhere. It was followed by a huge wave of Covenant small arms fire. The wall had been breached. The grunts headed up the front, a few Elite commanders amongst them. Marines suddenly started spraying their ammo at the alien-creatures.
The 7.62mm x 51mm (.308 for the sake of everything holy) armor piercing bullets tore through the Grunts just fine, but the Elites began to evade and call in the armor fire. More massive plasma shots flew through the air, decimating the camp. Jake grabbed a plasma pistol off from the ground, and ducked under the arm of an Elite. Jake held down the trigger of the weapon, and fired a charged round into the Elite's face. The creature staggered backward and roared. Jake then charged the Elite and put a fist into the Elite's face, spattering its blood upon the ground.
Jake then pried a SMG out of a Marine's hands, and fired off the remaining rounds in the magazine. Covenant fell to the ground as the rounds tore through them. Just then, a Warthog blew out of a blind corner, and leveled several Covenant troops, a gunner, finished off the rest with the .50 caliber chain cannon on the rear of the vehicle.
The covenant forces retreated out of the camp.
"Damn! That was awful!" Jake said as he wiped some carnage off his visor.
"Welcome to life in Sector 8," Captain Hemlock gave him a grin and patted him on the back, "Come on, let's check the report."
To be continued.
