"Jesus," shouted Tim, "everyone, open up." Matching his words he lifted his rifle and sprayed the still closed pod with a hail of bullets. He suspected that the bullets didn't do anything but at least the kept the occupant trapped inside. Out if the corner of his eye he saw the marine sergeant lift his sniper rifle. Next thing he knew there was an enormous report as the sniper rifle sent a round straight through the pod. Punching a fist sized hole in the armor and killing the black armored elite inside. He stopped firing and hit the magazine catch. The magazine hit the ground with a clunk and he slapped a new one into the receiver snapping the bolt forward. That was when he heard the scream. He span round and immediately saw the smoking drop pod and next to it the elite with the plasma sword towering over a fallen marine. Tim swore. There was nothing he could do. Suddenly he heard a shout. He saw Alex running toward the elite with a metal pole. The elite froze and turned towards him. Alex, screaming with rage swung the pole at the elites head. The elite blocked with his sword, slicing the metal pole in half. Alex didn't care; he battered the elite mercilessly until within a few seconds its shield had dropped. The elite roared and swung with a powerful overhand blow, intending to bisect Alex from head to toe. Alex however had other ideas. He rolled forward underneath the blade. Then in one fluid movement he stood and rammed the metal bar in between the elites mandibles, through the top of its mouth and finally out the top of its head. Tim stood stunned he couldn't believe what he had just seen. God damn it, he was going to get a medal if it was the last thing he did. Tim was jolted out of my reverie by another wave of three drop pods which landed amongst us. This time Tim knew what he was going to do; he pulled out two grenades, pulled their pins out and waited, on in each hand. Sure enough there was a hiss and the door to the pod flew off. Quickly he threw the two grenades. They landed in front of the pod. One stayed there but the other bounced inside. There was a roar of anguish and an elite jumped out. Right onto the second grenade. There was a load explosion as the elite and the pod disappeared in a cloud of dust and debris. Tim allowed himself a grim smile and looked through his scope and aimed at the second elite. It was unlucky enough to be near the explosion and was taking cover behind a storage unit while its shields recharged. Tim fired and the elite dropped silently. The sound of his bolt working was load than the sound of the rounds firing. He saw the final elite go down in a hail of gunfire. "Right everyone all-round defense. I want the sniper and rocketeer in the middle. We're nearly there people keep tight." The waited like that for several minutes before they heard the familiar whine of pelican engines. The pelican came in all guns blazing and dropped into the courtyard. "Move" shouted Tim "we need to get aboard now" The marines broke formation and sprinted for the Pelican. Behind them and entire wall imploded and the covenant flooded into room. Tim turned and threw two grenades. One fell short and exploded harmlessly. The other however landed amongst a group of Fuel rod cannon wielding grunts and went off causing the spare ammo the grunts were carrying to detonate as well. There was a huge green explosion and the grunts along with their elite commander disappeared. Tim smiled; now that the elite was gone the grunts shouldn't be too much of a problem. Sure enough with cries of 'he got an elite' and 'he'll kill us all' the remaining grunts panicked and retreated. The marines stopped and en mass opened fire cutting them down in a maelstrom of bullets bodies and blood. They crowded onto the pelican which lifted up into the air and sped off towards the orbital MAC station orbiting above. On the way they saw a platoon of ODST's inserting in their drop pods. The pilot called back, I'm taking you back to the Boston MAC station. There you'll be debriefed and rearmed before heading back in tomorrow. There were groans from the marines. No one wanted to go back to that hell hole. They arrived on the station and the wounded were immediately whisked away by the medics. The rest of them headed to the armory to collect cleaning kits for their weapons. They went to an empty hanger and sat down to strip and clean their weapons. Tim had just taken his rifle a part when he noticed that a circular section of the air lock doors was glowing red hot
