(A couple of UNSC marines in their jungle fatigues are slowly wading through a lake)

"Hey man, why the hell do we have to go through the water?!" Pvt. Jackson whined.

"I didn't know you wanted to get your ass shot off, now shut up." Sergeant Jones snapped. They continued their march through the lake, which was only up to their chests. A screech of a banshee caused both of them to plunge into the murky water. After a few minutes they both resurfaced. Jackson felt like pointing out the obvious, "That banshee keeps circling over here; I think he saw us once." Jones just rolled his eyes and continued moving through the water.

"Where is that sniper team we sent out earlier?" An anonymous voice called out.

"From this radar read out...I'd say they're boned." Came a worried reply.

"Boned? Son, what kind of tactical term is that?" The man lit a cigarette showing the four stars that meant he was a general.

"Well sir, they're surrounded by at least thirty enemy troops, a banshee, a wraith, and at least 3 ghosts." The radar operator replied.

"20 bogies NE, take them down." Johnson ordered his sniper, Jackson. Bam! Bam! Bam! Bam! Eight grunts fell from bullet holes. 'Stupid to have the grunts come in a column formation' thought Jackson. He snapped in another clip and noticed they were so close he didn't need a zoom. He fired off clip after clip after clip downing all 20 of the grunts. He heard the ghosts before he saw them.

"Oh shit sarge, we got incom-" He looked for Johnson and didn't see him. A worried look crossed his face as he swung his rifle to his back and drew his pistol. Making sure the water seal was on right he dove under the water and tried to evade the all the plasma raining down on him. After he felt the vibration of the ghosts flying over he jumped up, ripped the seal from the barrel and fired off a clip into an elite. A roar and a blood splatter proved that he was out of action. (NOTE: never tried this over real water, so I'm just guessing from common sense.) His ghost now without a pilot turned off its hover engine and splashed into the water. Jackson reloaded his pistol and took aim at the second ghost pilot. Another roar and another splash finally alerted the 3rd ghost pilot. He strafed to the right and turned while firing upon Jackson. Jackson dove under water again and cursed himself, without his water seal his pistol became flooded and useless. After swimming about 20 ft his head hit something hard. He flipped vertical so he could get a look, it was Johnson's corpse floating face down full of holes. Seizing his pistol and AR both that had their water seals on, he took a quick breath of air from the surface and continued to shore.

"So it's hopeless for them." The general sighed, he sent to many good men to their deaths just to take out a dozen or so covenant to give the next battle a better chance of human victory. He glanced over at the radar operator and noticed his mouth was gaping. "What is it?" The general shouted.

"Its amazing, they took out 2 ghosts and 20 enemies! That leaves one ghost 10 enemy infantry, a banshee, and a wraith."

Jackson surfaced quietly and took aim upon a gold elite with his last clip in his sniper rifle. Each shot hit him right in between his eyes. He hurled his rifle and hit a grunt, cracking its methane tank. By his count there 7 more grunts, and 2 blue elites. Jackson unclipped his grenade and hurled it in the crowd of screaming grunts. After the explosion there were only two elites. As one elite ran towards a wraith and the other ran towards the banshee Jackson decided which one to stop. Purple blood sprayed over the banshee's surface. Jackson dumped everything except his pistol and ran to the banshee.

Once in he barely got it flying. When he was starting to get the hang of the flight controls a blue blob of plasma flew by. "Oh SHIT!" He yelled and tried to go left, which brought him to the right. He accidentally clicked a button on the left control and the fuel rod blasted off. As he watched, it soared straight into the cockpit and killed the elite. He landed his new banshee and pondered what to do.

"Sir, it seems only a banshee is left." The radar operator hung his head.

"Take a break son; I'll get a replacement for you." The general felt as bad as the operator, but he couldn't show it.

Jackson looked around at the charred battlefield littered with corpses. A small fire had started up from where he threw his grenade. He pulled the dead elite out of the wraith and checked the controls. They were fine, just covered in blood. He looted all the covenant corpses and pulled Johnson's corpse from the lake. Using a weird device off of the gold elite's body he magnetized the banshee, tank, and Johnson's armor. He gently put his spotter's body into the cockpit and surrounded him with stolen plasma weapons. Jackson lowered himself into the wraith's cockpit and returned to base, to give ONI more information; hopefully it will save others from having to see a friend die.
