He shouted, "Enemy sighted, straight ahead."
Ahead of the warthog, there was a covenant patrol of 10 grunts, 4 jackals at the front and rear, and one Elite. The Elite was talking to a jackal in their complex language of barks, growls, and other guttural sounds. Then he bursted out "laughing", throwing his head back and letting out a loud yell.
Eliza said softly, "Stop the hog."
John slowly stopped the warthog. They were perched on top of a hill overlooking the pass that the covvies were patrolling. Eliza got out and took cover behind a large rock. She used the rock to steady her sniper rifle.
Eliza whispered to the other marines, "On my shot...Fire a rocket into the middle of the grunts, then Frankie and John go down and mop 'em up. I'll try to get the Elite. Locked and loaded, everyone?"
All three other marines quietly said, "Sir, yes, sir".
A sniper rifle bullet split the air. John could see the contrail from the powerful flechette-stabilized discarding-sabot round go strait to sink in to the tall Elite's skull, right above the mandible.
Directly after the shot came the hollow sound of a rocket erupting from its firing tube. Jimmy shouted, "Take that, you damn midgets!" Through Eliza's scope, she could see Grunts flying every-which-way. It looked like there were about 8 Grunts dead.
To her right, Eliza heard the warthog accelerating down the hill. Assault rifle fire torn through the atmosphere, mowing down jackals and the two remaining grunts.
But, just before one Grunt was riddled with 7.62 mm armor-piercing rounds, he shouted, "Tossing one!" and threw a bright blue plasma grenade. It hit the front axle of the warthog and stuck. John was the only one who saw it.
He had learned from training to jump out immediately. John yelled as loud as he could, "GRENADE!!!". Jimmy and Frankie dove from the still-moving warthog, just as it exploded. The warthog was sent soaring through air almost 20 meters. Frankie and Jimmy were sent flying through the air, caught in the blast radius, but just barely. Frankie and Jimmy were knocked unconscious from the explosion, but their armor prevented most injury.
John was thrown to the ground, his assault rifle flipping 2 meters away. Three triumphant Jackals were jumping around their impromptu prisoners. As John tried to grab for his gun, a plasma bolt hit the area right in front of his hand, turning the sandy dirt to dirty glass.
Suddenly, John saw one jackal collapse, a white beam through its head. Good ol' Eliza... thought John. The two others turned towards their attacker and held up their shields defensively.
This was just the chance John needed. He jumped for his assault rifle, picked it up, and let loose two bursts of ammo. One burst shredded the body of the first jackal, bullets continuing through, only to bounce off the shield and be lodged in the jackal's body.
The second burst, though reflected harmlessly off the second jackal's shield. The jackal had, in an amazing feat, turned instantly to the attacker. John looked down at his assault rifle's ammunition display. It read 002. "Damn, bad day..." John muttered as he dove behind a rock. He disengaged the bolt, slammed in another clip, replaced the bolt, and jumped out, ready to let loose the finishing burst of rounds.
The jackal was nowhere to be seen though.
     "Damn shield-midgets."
Then he heard the well-known sound of a warthog starting. He looked over to where the hog had landed. There was the enemy, in the driver eat with his shield covering one side and the warthog's windshield covering his other side.
He probably had no idea what he was doing. All 4 wheels were turning erratically, the warthog was accelerating and braking, and he probably didn't even know which pedal made him go forward.
But John was in a dilemma: how to kill the Jackal. He could not shoot him with the shields. Suddenly John thought of a way...Throw a frag under the warthog. This would probably destroy the vehicle though. Then they would have to wait for evac. John hated to wait for evac, he'd rather find it himself. Maybe I could startle it enough to give Eliza a shot. John thought.
The problem had been solved though. Put of the corner of his eye, John saw Jimmy drowsily get up. The Sergeant looked around for his assault rifle. After a few seconds he gave up his futile search. Nearby laid a covenant plasma pistol from a dead Grunt. Jimmy picked it up, got a feel for it. All marines are trained with basics in covenant weapons. John hoped he knew how to charge a shot to take out covenant shield.
John was satisfied as a green ball of plasma erupted from the small gun, and homed unerringly in on the shield. There was a flash of light, then just a very surprised and unarmored Jackal sitting in the driver's seat of a UNSC warthog.
All 3 marines opened fire. About 10 assault rifle rounds sent sprays of blood across the warthog, a sniper rifle bullet went straight through the Jackal's head, and then to top it all off, a charged plasma pistol shot vaporized the Jackal's chest, creating a horrible sound and scorching the seat of the warthog.
From the hilltop, Eliza yelled, "Is my warthog okay?"
John shouted back, "A little worse for wear, come one down and see for yourself."
Eliza half-ran, half-slid down the hill. When Eliza saw the mess, she said two things. The first was, "And I just had these reupholstered...". The second was, "Nice job, guys."
Jimmy just wanted to find his rocket launcher, though. "That thing has served well, I'd hate to lose it now.".
John got to work applying medical supplies. Frankie came too a little later, asking what he had missed.
John replied with a simple, "Not much..."
