Master Chief ducked behind a crate as plasma enveloped the marine next to him.
"Too close," Cortana commented.
"Give me any strategy to saving the city from the Covenant," the Chief replied.
"Well, their must be something they are looking for because the elites are issuing orders to capture "The Book", it must be a religious artifact," Cortana guessed.
Master Chief jumped over the crate only to find a group of jackals headed his way. He took an expert shot with his M6D magnum pistol sending two jackals to the pavement. Then he grabbed the other two by their shield arms and broke the arms with a blunt crack. The final jackal was incapacitated with Master Chiefs elbow in his throat and a pistol round in his skull. He then returned to the human forward base in an old abandoned warehouse.
"Chief! We need you down to level 2 section B-A5 for combat ops," A female officer walked up to Master Chief and gave a salute, which he crisply returned. "The situation is deteriorating rapidly we have reports of Covenant forces with armored support in level 1 and 2 sections A-A1 through B-A3 and we need to stop their spread so we can counter-attack them."
"Rodger Lieutenant, I'm on it."
"Oh and Chief I've got a warthog light transport to get you to the fighting faster, and Chief, Give 'em hell."
"We'll do Lieutenant, Master Chief out."
Just on schedule a warthog pulled up and the Chief jumped into the passenger side.
"Cortana contact ONI about what this book is, I have a bad feeling they might be holding some secrets in those bases," John ordered.
"I contacted ONI's PR AI and patched through your access codes and made the required inquiries and it seems the information is deeply hidden in encryption and access codes."
"Can you break them?"
"Well, I can do any-th"
Cortana didn't get to finish, just then the warthog was hit with a fuel rod and the Master Chief was sent headlong into a building. His body like a missile, he went right through the titanium-A armor and skidded to a halt in what seemed to be an old mall. He ran his suits schematics and he seemed fine except for a minor dent in his helmet and the loss of his pistol and rifle during the explosion. He slowly and carefully crept out of the mall and into the street. His motion tracker was going berserk with contacts all over. It also showed one friendly under the overturned warthog. He checked for enemies and rolled to the overturned hog. He wasn't surprised to see a marine crushed under the warthog, his body maimed. He found his guns and ammo and scanned the situation. It seemed there were elites and jackals patrolling the area.
Then a covenant cruiser came into view from overhead. It sent down it's grav lift and started sending supplies earth side.
"Interesting," Cortana commented. "It seems this area is of much importance to the enemy. They are sending signals to secure the area completely. That's our cue to leave, Chief."
"No," Master Chief interjected. "We will stay put and find out what they are doing here. Cortana, set your scanners around the area and bring in images and signals of enemy behavior."
"Roger Chief completing tasks."
Master Chief glanced over the wrecked vehicle. It was astonishing, in 5 minutes they had dropped 2 wraith tanks and dozens of ghosts and turrets, they were now dropping commanders, the dreaded elites that carried laser swords.
"They seem to be setting up search teams from what I can translate," Cortana hypothesized. "The commanders are telling the elites to make sure humans cannot access this part of the "Holy City". It doesn't make sense; they are destroying the other parts of the city but this one as only taken damage from humans."
The Master Chief took 2 frag grenades from his backpack.
"We'll see about their "Holy City" now."
He set the frag grenades to proximity and tossed them toward the grav lift. The explosion rocked the square. John then stealthily rolled toward human controlled sections and sprinted headlong to help.
"Chief, they are sending "Holy Warriors" after the "Rouge infidel" which I assume means you, I don't know what they might be but it doesn't sound inviting. I'm mapping the safest and fastest exit route and displaying in on your HUD."
"Cortana, open a COM channel with commanding officer in section B-A7."
"Done Chief."
"Hello this is Sergeant Jones speaking, what do you need Chief?" a woman's voice echoed through John's head.
"Sergeant, we need evac and cover we are headed to your section on foot from section B-A5 and are being pursued."
"Roger Master Chief, I'll send in the Guerrilla Ops."
Master Chief missed a step, the Guerilla Ops we the best forces the UNSC had to offer, and they would surely be good reinforcements from these "Holy Warriors". Just then a thud hit next to John's left flank and he turned to see hunters, elites and some other monkey looking species chasing him. He turned and fired three pistol shots. One lodged in a hunter's face, which angered him, making him charge with more ferocity. The other shot ripped through an elites shield smashing in his temple and sending him hurtling to the ground. The third shot hit one of the curios monkey beasts and did seemingly nothing.
The monkey creature shot his high-velocity grenade launcher at John. He ducked and strafed and he watched as he shields completely depleted by the grenades impact ahead of him. Surely these creatures were the strongest Covenant he'd ever fought.
"Cortana, run a scan on that monkey-like species and report back."
Master Chief hurdled a crate and ran full speed for his life.
"Chief, it seems those creatures are called "brutes", they are religious warriors for the Covenant and only go on extremely import missions, they must be here for this mysterious book. Well I hacked into the ONI subsystem that stores intel in this "Holy Book" and it seems we recovered it from some outer colony named SepCom2, ONI brought it back here for translation and investigation."
"Where is it now?"
All of a sudden the Master Chief's COM exploded with a voice.
"Yeeeeeehaw! This is Guerilla Ops section four squad two, we are on our way Chief."
A warthog rounded a corner near John on two wheels and fire erupted from it, causing the Covenant to retreat to their safe makeshift HQ.
"It's good to see you marines," John admitted, "The Covenant have established a temporary base and are securing this area."
John hopped into their hog.
"Let's get out of here ASAP!"
"Roger Chief."
With that they sped away to a secure area.
When they arrived at Human HQ, Lieutenant Berkley briefed them on the situation. Master Chief also received a command chip from ONI's defense board. His new mission was to take what they know about the book and to actually barter with the Covenant for it in exchange for Earth's safety.
"Sir," Cortana chimed, "I think I can give you the translation just say what it says on your HUD when you get to the Covenant forward base.
"Roger that Cortana."
Master Chief was also given a 20-man task force to accompany him on this odd mission. They were driving towards the heat of the Covenant line when a scouting group with one Covenant commander saw them. The Covenant charged but the Master Chief yelled before they did any damage.
"I have a proposition about the Holy Book!" he bellowed.
They Covenant stopped. They talked amongst themselves and the commander came forward.
"We are listening, human scum."
"If we hand over the relic, will you all leave this planet and our colonies alone?" Master Chief pleaded.
The elite ran back to his men and radioed his overseers. In about 5 minutes he returned.
"My orders are to... SLAG THE HUMANS!"
He rolled away and opened fire on the marines. All his underlings copied him.
"Return fire!" Master Chief growled. He ran back and leaned against a wall firing into the Covenant. "Pull the warthogs back!" Two warthogs were already fragged. The other drove away as marines provided a blanket of cover fire. Master Chief downed 2 elites and some jackals with his trusty pistol, but the Covenant were flooding in... much like the flood on Halo. The images filled his mind. Men being ripped apart limb from limb and then being turned. Captain Keyes... He pushed the thought out of his mind, it was over and the Captain was dead, and Halo decimated. These marines required his full concentration to stay alive.
He held his ground and the firefight lasted for two days. Then, it happened. He saw the elite running toward the Covenant. He had... a book in his hands. The Book. John leaped from behind the bucker and ran at the elite spraying bullets everywhere. The marines saw him just as the huge explosion rocked the battlefield...

The Master Chief came awake from unconsciousness with shackles in his feet and hands. He was up on a wall in a Covenant ship.
"So nice of you to join us, John."
Master Chief looked around. Who here knew his name? Then a figure slipped out of the shadows. It was a prophet. An elite type being with a beard. This one floated and was trailed by about 50 guards. It was The Prophet, the Covenants leader and religious power, why was he here with John?
"John, you are the Covenant's last hope to survive. Let me explain. We are attacking your race for artifacts, as I'm sure you know. We are trying to find a savior. Our empire is in grave danger. A horrible race is taking our planets and colonies one by one. I have heard you have met them before and we will leave your planet alone if you help us do one thing, destroy the flood."
"I did, the flood were killed on Halo." John was confused.
"Or so you humans thought. They stole one of our ships to get to a colony of ours. They spread like a virus. Even my brutes cannot defeat them. We need your help."
"You Covenant bastards killed all my team and millions of humans and now you want my help? I would rather die." John scoffed.
"Well unless you help I can assure you that your race will be destroyed as well."
John thought. How can this be? The Flood survived. They were spreading like a rash. The Covenant wanted his help.
"Fine, but I do this for the human race alone, and not your collection of filthy shit."
"Fine John, you are our savior."
