11th October 2552

Carol Smith and sobbed with her head in her hands. Her, her two sons and a platoon of Marines walked down the street.

"Now, Ma'am, we must get to the LZ point if we wish to get you away from here and safe." The Captain explained in a rough, low tone. "You are still in danger here."

Carol made no reply. Her feelings were of only sorrow and fear. She wished she didn't have to leave Natalie's corpse, but the Marines had said she was already dead and there was no way they could escape with the extra weight. Carol did not believe him.

She walked slowly, falling behind the Marines, and with her children close behind. The Soldiers aimed their weapons at all high rooftops, crates, walls and even their backs; ready for any kind ambush. Their guns glowed in the beautiful sun, and their helmets glistened, a gentle breeze penetrating the gap in their uniforms and giving them a much-needed relief from drowning in their own sweat.

In war, a moment of silence is almost always followed by moment of commotion, hell and death.

Within a second the beauty of Carol's world had changed, the silence was no more. Plasma bolts tore through the air. They burned into the Marines' skin, killing them with pain and anger. Corpses fell to the ground seconds later and Carol found herself in a world of hell. The deafening sounds that were now echoing throughout the street were suddenly blocked out and her heart thumping in her chest at ninety beats per minute was the most dominating sound.

Was she dead? Was she dreaming? She didn't know; she didn't care. All she saw was a bulking, hideous alien. Towering over her, she now saw something else in his face. Sorrow? Guilt? Anger? His eyes were glistening; he was feeling something he hadn't felt before. He disappeared as she blacked out. Reality had escaped Carol now, and she had no intention to bring it back…

Two Hours Earlier

Quen 'Elkofee ran through the urban jungle around him. The Unggoy could not keep up, but this did not matter to him. What mattered was finding a platoon that he could work with. One Sangheili maybe be strong, but to be truthful, he was worth the Forunner's long lost manure if he ran into a full squad of Marines; if not worst, the Demon.

He rounded a corner, and to his relief, came across a Covenant squad. There was a large, flickering light-up sign that said Hotel Zanzibar on the roof. A fellow Sangheili greeted him with a surprised look. He was dressed in white, radiant armour that glowed in the sun's rays. The Commander strode up, and addressed 'Elkofee.

"Who are you?" was his first question. He had a cold, weary expression.

"Quen 'Elkofee your Excellency," he answered, instant and crisp. I was a survivor from Legends of Untold Majesty. My escape pod was destroyed when I collided with a human escape pod. I"-

"Say no more," The senior warrior cut him off, his mandibles suddenly moving quicker than lightning. "You will stay with us." As his voice trailed away he lifted his left hand up. The palm of his blue covered hand was facing the sky and his two fingers and thumb were half-closed, forming a cup shape. He was clearly gesturing to his squad.

From what 'Elkofee could see, it consisted of three major Kig-yar, a sniper, four major Unggoy with five minor and finally a second Sangheili, dressed in his blue, Minor armour.

"I respect your acceptance." He replied once more.

"I am Grando 'Fucklithee," he said to 'Elkofee, his armour dimming from the sun moving behind a cloud. "Thank me not, we have work to do."

He then stood up tall, looking triumphant despite the battle that was afoot. No one but an anxious Kig-yar saw the Human sniper crouching over the edge of a high building. He squealed in question before hearing a Sangheili's voice.

"Warriors, we most certainly have a battle to win." He bellowed over the crowd. "However, today is the day we get our first foothold on Earth! By conquering this city, we help to fund the resources needed for the invasion of Earth, and the extermination of Humanity!"

He held his head up high, his feelings seemed mixed however; guilt was overpowering glory for some reason. The growling little beast came galloping up, his long jaw and razor-sharp teeth dripping with saliva. 'Fucklithee crossed his eyes. If he had eyebrows they would point downwards in confusion of what the Kig-yar now told him.

He found it no joke however when an Unggoy which was sat on a nearby broken wall received a sniper round to his crinkled neck. The little thing shot back and off the wall, screaming with an almost motionless mouth.

'Fucklithee followed the grey, tell-tale line, up to where the nose of a gleaming black object hanged over the edge of a building. He pointed the location of the human and a second Kig-yar, beam rifle in hand, aimed at the head of the protruding human. The accelerated particle beam moved at the speed of light, piercing the human's head the moment the trigger was pulled.

The noise echoed all around the dimming streets of the town.

"We must make haste." 'Fucklithee concluded shortly afterwards. "We haven't won yet."

With that, the group of fifteen Covenant troops walked through a building and into the dim light of Hotel Zanzibar.

The eerie lights of this creepy, forbidden place flickered continuously, sending Goosebumps down the Unggoys' shivering spine. The group moved light-footedly to avoid attracting attention, however the silence was broken when 'Fucklithee spoke.

"This building would make a good outpost for out troops," he said calmly in his yet dull voice, not changing his tone for moment. "Clear it of any hostiles."

His comrades went to check out the building their own ways although he stopped them immediately. He fake-coughed, getting their attention.

"I, the five minor Unggoy and two of the Major Kig-yars, will check downstairs. The remaining Kig-yar, our sniper and all Major Unggoy will go with 'Vortexee and 'Elkofee to check upstairs." He addressed both the other Sangheili.

They split into their groups and set off. 'Elkofee could hear the old wooded stairs creaking under his weight. Every time his hooves touched the floor they chipped up bits of old rotting wood. He reached the top and checked for targets. It was clear, he had to be careful the since the Humans could easily establish an ambush in these winding corridors, and the lack of visibility created another problem. He kept his firearm high, ready for an assault.

But nothing could prepare him for being surrounded with no cover. In an instant the air vent opened above and fell onto an unfortunate Unggoy, crushing his weak bones with much force to spare. The responsible marine jumped down, only to be impacted on 'Elkofee's foot. He flew backwards and slammed into a wall, smearing his blood on the bullet-scared paint.

A female human came from nowhere and went to hit him from behind, 'Elkofee dodged the butt of her rifle and kneed her in the stomach. She flipped through the air, coughing up half her guts in the process. A third attack came from directly ahead where a two more soldiers had fired their burst fire weapons at him. They reflected his shields so he returned fire, launching a blue-white hail of death at the dumbstruck humans. They landed on the floor almost instantly with a satisfying thud, their blood coated bodies strewn on the carpet.

Then, before he could react, more fire reflected off 'Vortexee's shields before they failed, leaving the flesh exposed. Taking advantage while both Sangheili were still in shock, threw a knife round the corner wall and pierced the Minor's mouth, his separated mandibles unable to do anything to stop the blade from hitting the back of his throat. He choked, while another human fired at him, hitting him in the back of his head. The Sangheili collapsed, as the other growled in anger. 'Elkofee was in rage. He heard a second Sangheili scream downstairs and was certain it was 'Fucklithee.

He charged first at the marine who threw the knife. 'Elkofee lifted him by the neck, then tensing his fingers and snapping his bones with satisfactory click. He then threw the limp body into the other human at the end of the hall, forcing over like he had done outside.

"By the Gods, you have defied our race and dealt with Demons, your race is insignificant and we will crush you like the pitiful bugs you are. You are pimples on our conquest Our Prophets are the arms of the Forunners, and us warriors, we are the blade, the blade that will puncture your heresy and desecration. "

The human grunted, then laughed.

"Go to hell you freak," he coughed as 'Elkofee shot him square in the chest; unaware of the fragmentation grenade he was holding.

The Sangheili stared in disbelief as it blew up, shards of metal flying everywhere; he flew of his feet, and fell unconscious.

One and a half hours later
14:59

'Elkofee blinked, and then sat up. He was surrounded by a group of Unggoy and one Kig-yar.

"Excellency, you alive!?" One of them grunted, as they all stood back.

'Elkofee stood up; he seemed Okay.

"Went sent a signal to a Phantom." Said another Unggoy. "But we have Humans closing in, and we couldn't leave you Excellency."

"Hide," answered 'Elkofee, "We will ambush them."

A few minutes later they had arrived, all the troops were in position as there was an eerie silence.

"Open fire!" He shouted in an instant.

A few seconds and the humans were dead. He stood over some civilians. He went to fire, but his finger would not pull the trigger. He tried, but nothing happened. An Unggoy finished the job for him, however he felt something, he cared for them. His feelings were even more mixed, as the Phantom appeared overhead.
