CLICK. The safety was clicked off. CHIK-CHIK. The rifle was cocked and loaded. The rifle made a small crunch as it hit the gravel, making the owner flinch. He was usually much quieter. He held his breath for a second, then exhaled. No one heard him. He lined up his eye with the scope, making sure his vision wasn't impaired through the confining cylinder. The night vision turned on, and the world turned an eerie green. He was now in his nirvana, sniper rifle in hand, targets in front of him. A smile slid over his face, eyes glistening in the moon light.
Although he was ruthless in his profession, he still had a weakness: Nature and its beauty. He looked up from his scope for a second, looking at the midnight rain pouring down onto the heavy foliage, accented by the moon light. It was almost a pity that the beautiful green leaves were about to be stained red with blood, or burning in a fire. He sighed and shook the nature out of his mind. He looked through the scope again, and saw a target.
It was a man, his favorite prey. Sure, the Covenant were tough to kill, and he appreciated it, but there was something about killing a human that made his heart pound. He stifled a laugh and put his index finger on the trigger. This was the moment he lived for. At this very second he was God, and he alone had the choice to let this man live or die. He could walk away and let this man return to his post and live out his dull, pointless life, or kill him and watch his brains paint the walls pink and red.
       He was a vengeful God.
He pulled the trigger and the 14.5 millimeter armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding-sabot round burst out of the barrel, heading straight towards the marine. The marine turned just in time to get the bullet right between his eyes. He stood for a second, looking straight ahead. He saw the vapor trail, but wondered why it missed him. Then he realized something: he was missing the back of his head. He fell backwards and died, leaving a pool of blood in the thick jungle ground.
He laughed as he saw another marine running up to the corpse. What kind of idiot runs towards a sniper? He put the marine's head into his sights and put his finger on the trigger, ready to fire...
BOOM! I giant explosion shook the jungle. About a half mile to the left, a camouflaged building was incinerated, sending boulders and burning trees high into the air. He swore and looked back towards the marine, and swore louder when he saw that the marine was gone.
He stood up and started running towards an eagle shaped boulder a quarter mile away. After years of training, a quarter mile run was only a minute and a half. When he got there, he saw the very person he wanted to meet.
"TWITCH! YOU DUMB LITTLE SHIT!" He yelled.
"Hey, Hawk. I see that you didn't need all those bullets." Twitch laughed. "Like the fireworks?"
"Twitch...." Hawk said through gritted teeth. "I TOLD you to set the charges to go off at twelve THIRTY!" Hawk started walking closer towards Twitch.
"Don't. Get. Close. To. Me." Twitch said, an evil look on his eyes.
Hawk ignored the warning and stepped closer, close enough to feel the breath of Twitch on his face. Twitch pulled out a combat knife from his hip holster and pressed it up against Hawks face. "If you move, you're dead." He muttered.
"If you so much as twitch, Twitch, I'll put a bullet in your head." Hawk said, gesturing towards Twitch's left ear.
Twitch looked left and saw Hawk's M6D pressed up against his face. "Nice, nice." Twitch said. "Now, put down the gun, and I'll put down the knife."
Hawk considered it for a second, then lowered the gun. "Now get your goddamn knife out of my neck." He said.
Twitch laughed, lowering the knife. He sat down, cross-legged, and grabbed his backpack. He unzipped it and pulled out a freeze-dried meal. "You want any?" Twitch asked, extending his hand, which was full of food.
Hawk looked and saw that Twitch's hand was covered in human blood. "I'll pass."
"Suit yourself." Twitch said, licking the blood off his hand.
Hawk looked away at the disgusting sight. He climbed up a tree, pushing aside branches and leaves. He climbed to the highest branch and sat on it, looking out into the night sky. He could see nocturnal birds flying through the sky, moths flying towards the giant flames, and bats eating the moths. He smiled as he saw a female bird land in its nest and feed its hatchlings.
He kept smiling for several minutes, and then heard Twitch burp. Hawk pushed aside his anger and hatred towards Twitch and climbed back down the tree. When he got to the bottom, he saw Twitch urinating in the bushes in front of him. "You ready to go?" Twitch said, looking over his shoulder.
Hawk didn't answer and looked at the ground. There was Twitch's food pack, crumpled up and thrown to the ground. Hawk picked it up and walked over to Twitch. He turned him around and shoved the garbage in his mouth. "Never litter in front of me. It destroys the planet."
Twitch spat out the garbage. "OK... ok... let's go." Twitch said.
Hawk shoved him away and took his sniper rifle off of his back. He started running to the north, where the explosion took place. He could hear Twitch falling farther behind, which made him smile and start running faster. Up ahead he could see a small building, made out of cement and painted green and brown. If it hadn't been for the fires, he would never have seen it.
He jumped over a burning log and ran up to the wall of the building. He leaned up against it and crouched, looking from side to side, making sure there were no marines or turrets. After a few seconds, he saw Twitch running out of the foliage, sweat beading on his face. It took Twitch a few more seconds to get to Hawk, and he sat down, breathing hard. "Thanks for waiting up." Twitch said.
Hawk stood up, looked around the corner, and ran 100 feet forward, to the other side of the building. He looked around that corner and saw the door. The door looked like hollow metal, which was bad news for him. He turned back towards Twitch. "Give me three sticks of dynamite."
"All I have are grenades, bro." Twitch said, holding out 4 grenades.
Hawk snatched the grenades and ran towards the door. He piled the grenades at the foot of the door, making sure each one was at least a foot apart. He took one grenade and pulled out the pin, set it down on the ground, and ran like hell back around the corner. He listened for the explosion, then looked back around. Nothing happened. Hawk looked back at Twitch.
"Oops. Did I give you duds? My bad." Twitch smirked.
Hawk stared angrily, then looked back around the corner. The cost was clear, so he sprinted towards the door. He smashed open the code lock and cut some wires. He rearranged the wires into a different combination, then pressed up against the door. It opened, sending cold air into Hawk's face.
Hawk walked inside, rifle ready in case someone jumped out at him. Twitch walked past him, silenced M6d in hand. There were three doors in the room. Hawk took the left door, and kicked it down. Storage closet. Twitch took the right door. Bathroom.
Hawk and Twitch walked up to the middle door, looked at each other, and nodded. They kicked down the door and entered, guns blazing.
