The Death Wings, chapter 1: Casualties and prep.

The covenant army is on on earth's door step,
knocking. The planetary bomb-bardments have already begun, and the race of man has little hope, as the religeous and blood-thirsty covenant seem to wash over each region, wiping all of the glory from what it once was. Yet, in this
smoldering hell that was once earth, the marines fight on, giving their lives to a sole cause: the survival of their freinds, family, and the rest of the world. Only, a miracle could save them....

UNSC COMMAND HQ

''Sir, I am detecting some sort of disturbance in the covenant fleet...''

''What sort of disturbance?''

''They are.. Well, they seem to be pulling out all their cruisers.. But the odd thing, is that two of the damaged ones are heading to a completely different area of space...''

''Hmmmm...''

''Sir, it is my advice that we should send scouts after both of them.''

''Good choice Lieutenant.''

''Thank you admiral.'' The Admiral was an aging man, but still combat ready. He became somewhat a heroe later in his carrier when he aided ensign Keyes lead an assault on a covenant patrol. Keyes was about ten years younger than him, but they seemed to get along fine. He had specificaly
requested Keyes and his ship, The Pillar of Autumn, to take the team of spartan 2 soldiers, for the covert/intel operation against the covenant. The mission: stow aboard a covenant cruiser and learn the location of the covenant home world. But, a couple days before the operation, the covenant glassed the planet Reach, obliderating one of the main ship yards for the UNSCs' navy. Also on the planet were the team of spartan 2s. From what the admiral had heard, Keyes had the spartans, but also he heard before he entered light speed, a covenant cruiser pinned the Autumn with a torpedo, destroying it. But these are rumors, as many ships are being lost every day, trying to fight the covenant.

''But it doesn't make ANY sense.'' Barked the admiral.

''I know. They were already most of the way up North America. We lost most of The United States, but if they had gotten up to Canada, they would have destroyed TONS of military bases, training grounds, armory's, not to mention the ship yards. Canada is the closest we come to having Reach back. Also don't forget the agricultural and economic values Canada has. Most of North america was dependant on its beef. Man, what would we do without CANADIAN hamburgers?
Not to mentio-''

''That's enough.Yes yes, lots and lots of goodys to put it short. Now, er..Were do we stand?'' Asked the Admiral, in a deep gruff voice.

''We have lost From the U.S. border, down.I can't believe the Canadian marines held out for so long.''

''We've also taken hits in africa, again they held them off.''

''Well then.''

''Yes sir?''

''Have we lost our special forces?''

''Most of them yes.''

''Then I want an experienced, NOT specialised , intel team to chase the weakend cruisers.''

''And a special ops. team after the rest of the covenant fleet. I want to know, what the hell is up with these guys.''

''Yes sir.''

''And, Lieutenant?''

''Yes sir?''

''Are thw Wildkats ready?''

''Yes sir.''
''I wan't them in the briefing room tomorrow.''

''Yes, sir.''

''I want the latest weapons, and armor with them, got it?''

''Yes sir.''

''And, Lieutenant?''

''Yes sir?''

''I'm going with them.''

''Yes sir. And, sir?''

''Yes, Lieutenant?''

''Good luck, Admiral.''

''Thank you.''

''And hopefully, by tomorrow, they'll ALL be gone.''
''Wait,we're recieving a transmission.''
''Put it on.''

This is C--static-- spec ops team -Static---T, we have covena---static-- p-static--isoners. --static-- requesting -static--
- pickup. Over and out.

''We need to get them. we'll be giving out medals tomorrow.

THE NEXT DAY

''They're all gone. But we have prisoners.''
''Now here here, lieutenant, how in the hell did ANYONE get covenant prisoners?'' questioned the admiral.

''You know our heroes?''
''Yes Lieutenant?''

''Well, the team you requested for the special ops mission?''
''Yes, yes. Get to the point...''
''Well the WildKats are the team who took em.''

''Well, then. I'll be giving out medals to my team of suicidals.''

''Sir?''

''They probably won't live.''

''But your going with them, right? sir?''

''No lieutenant. I am going with the other team.''

''So, your leaving the others to die? Heh, great. so your going with the best probability that you'll live, while leaving the others to their fate. Great, im glad im not going.''

''Actually, Lieutenant, you are coming with me.''
''Wha-?''
''You are a soldier. No, an asset. An expendable asset.
Like every other soldier in the UNSCs Armed forces. You are a tool, nothing more. You volunteered. You are UNSC AF property. NOTHING MORE, NOW LIEUTENANT, GET YOUR ASS
DOWN TO THE BRIEFING ROOM! ON THE DOUBLE!!!'' Roared the admiral.

''Disgusting. He knew what he became when he joined. It's not my fault.''

The Admiral began to prepare the breifing he would have to give to the teams. He did wonder who would be the ones to die, and the argument he had with the lt.
He wondered what the future would bring.
