Jason lay in the short, green grass. It was a warm summer day, and there was a cool breeze sweeping through the trees. Mina sat next to him, typing erratically on her keyboard. Jason took her hand off the keyboard and put it on his face. He smiled. "You're going to hurt your hands on that thing, Em."
She smiled at him. "You're lucky I'm here and not at work. Admiral Harper wanted me there today, but I told him I wanted to stay home with my new husband." She kissed him on the cheek. "He's been acting kind of strangely, lately."
Jason sat up. "I though he was on deck?"
She nodded. "He is, but for some reason, he really wanted me at the base today."
"But isn't he in Africa or something?"
"The Morning Star was last docked at Cairo, correct."
He smirked. "Guess you're just the best one at the base," he said, putting his arm around her. "What are you working on, anyways?" He glanced at her screen. There was a large, 3D grid on it, with a dark purple background. Many small rectangles of varying shapes and sizes surrounded a giant, blue orb.
She quickly snapped the screen down. "Nothing," she said, sweat forming on her brow.
           "Mina, come on..."
"Jason, you know that I can't show you my work, it's supposed to be top secret."
           "Just this o-"
"It would violate so many military codes; I wouldn't be able to start to count."
He furrowed his brow. "Mina, do you think I'm a spy?"
She closed her eyes, and sighed. "Jason, you know I love you more than anything, but I have to be loyal to my job."
"I gotcha..." He lay back on the grass again, looking into the blue sky. Mina opened her laptop, and began typing again. In the far distance, he could see the towering buildings of Old Seattle, and the larger ones of New Seattle behind them. Jason could hear the incessant clicking of the keyboard, like dozens of small insects on a concrete floor. In the sky, he could see tiny, tiny dots sitting among the vast blue. Recently, they had been more numerous, and it seemed like they increased every day. They were, by no means, clouding the sky at all.
"Your mom has that baby shower for your sister next week," she told him, "remember?"
He winced. "Of course. How could I forget my sister's first baby?"
She glared at him, and then laughed. He chatter rang, and she picked it up. "Hello? Ya, it's Lieutenant Carter. Oh, hello Jen. Ya, I'm at home with Jason. Ya, I'm sure it's safe. Yes, I'm sure. What the hell are you talking about? Ya, work is really getting to all of us. No, Admiral Harper didn't give me any programs last week. Yes, I'm sure. Ok. You too, Jen. Ok, bye." Click.
Jason turned towards her. "What was that all about, Lieutenant?" He rested his hand on hers. "Trouble at the office?"
"No, just work stuff, military things. Jen asked if I was safe; she's kinda odd." She chuckled.
Jason lay back down, and twirled a brown, crunchy leaf in his hand. Mina resumed her frantic typing, staring at the screen. Jason yawned, and slowly drifted to sleep.

Someone was nudging him on the shoulder, waking him up. He groaned. "Do you hear that?" asked his wife.
He sat up, rubbing his eyes. "Ya, the non-stop typing of the worlds best navy intelligence officer?"
"No..." her gaze was fixed towards the city.
He looked at her, with concern. "Honey, I don't hear an-," He looked at the city in the distance. "What the hell is that?"
She shook her head, tears forming in her eyes. "They're here..." she whispered to herself.
He shook his head. "Those are alarms... the city's emergency sirens...oh God..."
She stood up. Her laptop fell to the grass. Jason grabbed her hand, and stood up. Together, they looked at the sky. Dozens of small, vibrant blue flashes appeared in the sky. Long, elliptical objects emerged form the flashes in small groups. There was a larger ellipse in front of the rest, and they moved forward. The sirens grew louder. Her laptop started beeping. "Incoming message from Portland Orbital MAC platform," said Aliel, Mina's personal AI.
They looked at the lopsided computer screen on the ground. A mans face appeared. "Attention all ground-based UNSC personnel: you have strict orders to-"
Mina kicked the laptop, and the screen flickered and went black. Tears streamed down her face. Jason held her in his arms. "So many planets fallen, but I thought Earth would always remain hidden... but those bastards found us..."
He stroked her hair. "Honey, everyone knew that the Covenant would find Earth eventually, especially after Reach fell... Mina, it isn't your fault, ok? It isn't anyone's fault, honey. But don't worry. Someone will save us, you know it. Somehow, we humans will find a way to survive."
