Last minute marines
Date: 29 September 2004, 6:28 AM

He renewed his grip on the battlerifle. His sweaty hands made it impossible to get a firm grip on the thing. He sank on his knees and try to wipe the sweat of with his hands. He was so scared he barely heard the whisper coming from above. 'Sanders! For the love of God, pay attention!'
The other private tiptoed towards him and pulled him back up. Sanders tried to make a grip on the battlerifle, but it wasn't mend to be. The sweat rolled out under his hands. Private Stacker disappeared behind the car wreck again and after letting out an anxious sigh, Sanders joined him.
The two where stationed under the Fujikawa bridge on Kenyan street. The idea was to guard every vital transportation roads heading into the city. Stacker and Sanders where both last minute marines, and had no combat experience. They where both underage civilians working in warfactories till it came down to evacuating or putting on a uniform. Even though they where given the impression to be in the safest spot possible, neither of them felt safe and they frequently stared at the sky, waiting for the much feared and for them unknown covenant.
'What do you think they will look like?'
Stacker turned to Sanders, who's eyes where pointed at the night sky above.
'I hope we won't find ourselves in a position where we can find out.'
'We are sitting under one of the biggest entrances to the city, how will we not see them?'
Sanders said nothing. He put down his battlerifle again and started to wipe his hands on his uniform. Stacker thought about his father. He went on one of the transports away from earth. Even if Earth will somehow survive, and humanity miraculously manages to keep of the covenant, most transports, including his father's, will not return. The ones who evacuated weren't always put into the best light. More then a few Pelicans have had that discussion. Even the one carrying Sanders and Stacker.

'I can't believe how many people are leaving! Don't they have any love for there planet!' The man next to Sanders repeated heatedly. 'If there weren't any people leaving our race wouldn't live to see next month,' Sanders replied calmly. 'Well, they should just let enough leave to start anew, and give guns to the rest,' the man went on. A lot of people in the pelican agreed with the man, but a lot also had frightened looks on their faces, unable to hide it.
Stacker stood up. 'My father went on one of those transports, and I don't blame him. He does what he believes is right, as am I. If anyone here wishes to have a go at my father, I strongly advice you to think twice, because I'll kick your ass before I'll shoot you. Understood?' He looked around the pelican.
When no one responded he sat back down.
The man next to Sanders was still mumbling. 'Traitors family.' Sanders looked at him.
'He's here, isn't he?'

'You hear that?' Stacker sprung up, looking around.
'Great job! If you weren't planning on surviving, then this was a great strategy!' Sanders also stood up, and looked at the sergeant. 'Let me guess, please. You people are last minutes, am I right?'
They both nodded. The sarge sighed and signalled a warthog that was waiting a few hundred meters ahead.
'Stay alert, the ships have entered the solar system and I can't have any guards asleep right now. I rely on you two for telling me if I need troops here or not. STAY AWAKE!'
Sanders and Stacker nodded again and the sarge climbed into the warthog, which halted right next to them.
The two boys crawled back after the car.
'So,' said Sanders,' they are here,' His voice slightly trembling.
'It's still not sure if they are even going to make it to earth,' said Sanders. But he couldn't keep a steady voice either and he was pretty sure the beating of his heart was so loud even Sanders could hear it.

Later that night they watched the sky turning all kinds of colours. First it was a scarlet red, made so by the enormous beams of energy targeted at earths cities. After a while it turned green, and splashes of blue from destroyed covenant ships. When the colours began to mix it also started to evaporate, and the sky was very slowly turning normal again. The city however, was still untouched.
'You think they where defeated?'
Sanders made a sound which is hard to describe, but clearly voiced his opinion on the matter.
They started waiting again.
Suddenly, a few hours later, a loud sound ripped threw the city and the still coloured clouds where sucked together and turned blue as the huge covenant cruiser landed in the middle of the city. Sanders and Slacker watched in amazement and terror as the ship flew right over them.
Sanders turned to Stacker. 'Guess they aren't defeated yet.'

'Pull back!' The sergeant screamed to the marines who where emptying entire clips on the advancing covenant. Their line of defence has moved 3 blocks in 2 hours of long fighting. The line was a joke. The covenant had dropped artillery at key places and had access to anywhere in the city. Suddenly a plasma grenade exploded between the frontline jackals. After that, it became clear that it where only the jackals they had been fighting, cause the grunts lasted only a few seconds longer then the fifteen jackals.
'I can't believe grunts are that stupid. Throwing a grenade between their own troops.'
'Just feel lucky there are not on our side. Everyone, make sure their gone, Kel, call HQ and ask them where to head next.' They spread threw the remains of the alien assault group and finished of everything what was still moving. When the last one was given a blow to the head, the place seemed a lot more quiet. Only the dampened sound of far away explosions and gunshots where moving along the abandoned buildings. Kel came running to the sarge when the last set of coordinates came in. The sergeant made a slight twitch and a fake smile when he saw where the mainstream of covenant where heading to. 'Let's hope they aren't asleep this time.'

[I hope the story isn't to repetitive. My English is not that good so I had to use certain words over and over again. I do however believe that it's a cute story, maybe I'll actually finish it later]
