Planet Hope by Andrew Meyer

Hope: Battle of the Falls Forest (Pt. 1, Ch. 1)
Date: 25 May 2004, 2:39 AM

Location: UNSC Army Base X-Ray; Planet Life:inner colonies
Time: 0400 hours

Cortana, awaken by a minor power surge in her sub-routines, does a quick check of her systems and is about to go back to "sleep" when she noticed that Master Chief was awake.
"Chief?" Cortana asked "why are you all right?". "Yes, just thought I heard something outside," Chief said. Cortana, detecting a fluctuation in his voice, so Master Chief could lie, but she knew about it. "Is it those dreams again?" Cortana questioned. "Yes," Master Chief responded, "ever since Dr. Halsey left with Kelly while they were in the Eridanus Secundus system."
Cortana knew what the dreams were about. They were flashes of Major battles between what looked like UNSC vessels and Covenant vessels, not yet taken place. The dream ends with a view of a planet. First, Cortana thought it was Earth or Reach, but after a closer look, it was niether. In fact, the planet wasn't even in the UNSC database.
"These dreams have become more frequent, haven't they?" Cortana asked. "Yes, yes they have," replied John (Master Chief). In fact, before arriving on the planet Life, Cortana never had power surges in her subroutines. And it seems that everyday they become more frequent. It might be a magnetic system deep in the planet, or something else, but whatever it was, she wanted to know.
"It's all right Chief, this war will soon be over, and you can go and finally live a peaceful life, at least until you are called again," Cortana said trying to ease John. A few years ago, that statement would be a lie, but today it could easily be true. After Cortana's return from Halo and her time in the Covenant Flagship, she has obtained a great deal of information. Weapons technology, Slipstream technology, and shielding technology. A few years back, a dozen UNSC ships could barely hold their own against two Covenant Carriers. But today, with shielding, the MAC guns, and finally plasma weapons even better than the Covenant, a single UNSC Cruiser could take on a Covenant Carrier and a smaller Covenant vessel. Then, on the ground, every troop has a shield, not as strong as Master Chiefs, but it could take a couple of plasma shots. And the new and more powerful weapons and vehicles, first time in the entire war, humans could be outnumbered 4:1 or more and still be able to win the battle.
"Try to get back to sleep, there is a briefing at 0900 hours tomorr..er..today," Cortana suggested. "Ok, I'll try," responed John.

Master Chief steps out of his tent and looks around. There is a fog with visibility of about 200 meters. With a briefing in 3 minutes, John makes his way to HQ.
"Chief!" Cortana said, "forgetting something?" "Sorry," John replies, and puts her into a hand held pad. His MJOLNIR suit is in the "shop" for repairs and minor upgrades. It seems his suit is getting upgrades to his suit everyday, HQ must have more technology than they can handle. And John cannot stand being out of his suit, he feels too vulnerable, and is a lot more jumpy.
John arrives in the large tent, filled with captains of the next mission he was about to be assigned. He sits down and the briefing starts, they never start without him.
John was the only Spartan in the room. The UNSC had them spread so thin, they get moved all over the place. Even though they have new Spartans that joined the war, 43 to be exact, they are still moving all around UNSC controled space, being sent on the toughest and most important missions.
"Welcome everyone, hope you all have had a good nights rest, because you'll need it," says Admiral Cross. "There has been a lot of movement here," Cross pointing at the topographic map, "Falls Forest." "Intelligence has picked up a lot of radio frequencies in that area, possibly sending information." John sensed something wasn't right, the Covenant never held off a battle. John went into a deep thought, ignoring the admiral knowing that Cortana would pick up all the information. Why would the Covenant hold off a battle? And why are there so much radio frequencies in that area? Master Chief thought for a long time, thinking of ever reason why they would, and then he figured it out. "Admiral Cross, I know why they are "stock piling" in the forest."
