Halo Wing - Chapter One: The More Better Plan Still
Date: 10 February 2004, 6:31 PM

Private First Class Lionel Podman had just woken up. He stepped out into the usual morning mist of Battle Creek Outpost #14 and breathed in a lungful of air. He didn't have to worry about snipers at the moment, for the mist was so thick he could barely see the rocky landbridge strecthing out in front of him.

He cherished the moment of peace that he rarely encountered at Battle Creek Outpost #14. The air was usually filled with bullets, grenades, and plasma salvos. It was Christmas morning, but there were no trees or presents for these soldiers. The kindest thing the lieutenant would say would be, "Christmas is Merry. Protector duty you go!!"

Sometimes, Podman strongly disliked the lieutenant. He was more harsh and demanding than any other officer in his division, even Lieutenant General Pockley, who had a reputation for being strict.

The time and temperature function of his MJOLNIR armor told Podman that it was 13 degrees Celsius and 6:43 AM. It was far to early for him to be up, but after hearing the stirring of his fellow comrades, he was unable to sleep any longer.

His lieutenant had woken them all up and given them five minutes to get themselves prepared for conflict. He didn't like the sound of that at all, especially at 6:43 in the morning. He just wanted to get a good night's sleep for once. He had gone to bed at 5:00 that morning because he'd been on guard duty almost the entire night. He did his best to stay awake in the mist; the last thing he wanted was to doze off while he sat against the outer wall of the base.

Suddenly, the lieutenant stuck his head out of the base, making him snap out of his daydream.

"It starts backwards for inside," he said. "You are being a fool."
"Only some more minutes, sir. It is never this calm for it are here."

The lieutenant became angry, stepping all the way out of the base this time.

"I gave a direct order to it. You start for inside, or I demote to the official larva. I need to speak to the squad."

Podman knew that it was best for him to get inside. He didn't want to be the larva: that was Private Jordan's job. He took one last glance at the misty creek, then slowly walked back inside the base.

"All the right, ladies. I have got one plan."
"To make that, Sir?" said Sargeant Jenkins.
"To connect the blue ones and to capture its base."
"Permission to speak, gentleman," said Private Jordan, the larva.
"Granted, private."
"Each another plan of its always started to the little one of us killed or was gotten hurt. They never work...sir."
"That it is a risk you it will have that to make examination. And you will be leaving first," he added.
"Wonderful."
"Us we are going to establish two teams. Team One will have Jenkins, Hardy, and Smith, the other will be Podman, Williams, and Jordan. The Team One will establish the cover of sniper in the bridge of the land when the Team Two incorporates the base. A time that team two incorporated the blue base, the team one supplies front of the cover the lateral entrance. Team one, equips itself with the rifles of sniper: you need to arise yourself in its cover before the mist cancels."
"Sir, yes sir!"

The lieutenant put a hand on Podman's shoulder.

"You know what you doing," he said to Podman. "You lead them battle."
"But I am right a first private class," he replied. "I cannot carry out."
"I have the large faith in you. Good luck."

Everyone moved into the weapons locker. Team One grabbed SR Sniper Rifles and several clips, while Team Two equipped themselves with MA5Bs and M90s. Jordan got himself the lone rocket launcher, which was foolish because it only had two rounds left.

Team One exited the base, moving quickly and quietly. Their MJOLNIR armor was highly visible in the fading, but still thick mist, so they had to hurry. Once they'd safely reached cover, the lieutenant whispered orders.

"Hardy, starts the Active Camo, is moved then for the high one," said the lieutenant.
"Yes sir."

Hardy dashed for the blue triangle, then immediately disappeared. All the remainder of Team One could make out was a ripply outline of air. He climbed up the land bridge, established a position, then scouted the base. The lieutenant set up a private line on the com.

"It has any thing it are of the base, Hardy?"
"None, sir."
"All the right, soldiers. It starts to the high one."

The remainder of Team One joined Hardy at the top of the land bridge. The lieutenant signalled for Podman to lead Team Two to the base.

"Here we go," he said, pointing toward the creek.

Team Two dashed to the creek. Then they split up, hurrying to the front of the base. Two were on the left side of the door, one was on the right.

"Christmas is merry!" Podman shouted. He threw a grenade inside.
________

BOOM!
"What happen!!" said Sargeant Smith of the Blue Squadron.
"Somebody set up us the bomb!"
"No! Somebody played us one grenade!"
"Mount to the attack, gentlemen!"

"I thus that am bored," griped Private Alexander of Blue Squadron. "This station of the duty sucks absolutely. If we really to see the action, we are only fire of long scale MA5B and nothing he really happens."
"Pair the griping, Corporal Tucker," returned Sergeant Smith. "I more do not have the patience for it for much time."
"Sorry, Sir, but it is true."
"The attributed duties you get are not presumptions to serve the necessities, soldier."
"Yes, sir."

Private Alexander checked his watch. It was just after 6:30 in the morning. Breakfast time according to Smith, sleeping time according to everyone else. Alexander removed his helmet and scooped some of the soup into his cup. This morning, it was vegetable soup, and for the first time in a while, it was actually rather good...just not for breakfast. He ate the entire cup full, then cleaned it, placing it back into his pack.

BOOOOM!

Alexander was so shocked by the noise that he dropped his helmet, bending one of the sun blockers.

"What happen!!" shouted Sergeant Smith of the Blue Squadron.
"Somebody set us up the bomb!" yelled a frightened crewman.
"No! Somebody played us one grenade!" Alexander hollered.
"Mount to the attack, gentlemen!"

Once again, Battle Creek Outpost #14 would be riddled with the crackling of automatic weapons, the barks of sniper rifles, and the booms of fragmentation grenades.

--------

Private Hardy fired the first shot as the MJOLNIR-clad blue soldiers began to pour out of the base. A private lost half of his face as the slug pierced his visor and tore through the right section of his forehead.

Podman stuck his M90 shotgun into the entrance and fired two shells into an oncoming private. Due to the range of the bursts, the private was forced back into the wall, falling to the stone floor in a crumpled heap. Podman buried the butt of the rifle into another's head, then switched to his assault rifle and moved into the base. He was followed by Private Williams, who covered his six.

"Covers the lateral exits!' barked the lieutenant, strapping his SR to his back and whipping out his MA5B. "It scales above of the wall behind us and is moved around!"

Hardy and his men immediately stood up and began climbing the sheer rock wall behind them. If they fell, it was a forty foot drop. Hardy was the first to reach the top. He turned and helped Smith, Jenkins, and the Lieutenant reach the top, then reloaded both of his weapons. Smith and Jenkins were promptly ordered to circle around and cover the right side entrance.

Podman decended into the blue-white mist and his visor quickly adjusted to suit the new lighting. He peered around the next wall and saw two blue privates kneeling, rocket launchers pointed foreward. Williams and Podman dove out of the way just before they fired.

"Lieutenant, the blue ones has throwers of the rocket inside here!" Podman shouted into the radio. He rolled over, emptying his clip into a private that had just ran around the corner. The soldier's life left him just as he was about to discharge his shotgun into Podman's face. His dead body fell foreword, landing inches from him, and Podman scrambled away from it.
"I hear!" the lieutenant shouted back. "Eliminates the feeders, but one certifies the alive sojourns of sergeant!"

Podman made a mental note to not shoot at the only one with regulation blue armor as he wiped the blood of of his visor. Jordan appeared behind him, gripping a few grenades and a Needler.

"Where you get that one started?" Williams turned and whispered in surprise. "Command emitted it below some days has," Jordan replied with some satisfaction. "I kept it in my locker of the foot."
"Right, now pole it around the wall above there and fire!" Podman ordered.
"Yes, 'sir'!"

Jordan crept up to the corner, stuck his needler around the wall, and emptied a whole clip. There was the sound of needles ricocheting off the stone wall. Jordan chanced a glance around the corner and saw that there was no one there. Two rockets screamed out from separate sides of the base, flew inches from Williams' head, and penetrated Jordan's armor with a catastrophic explosion.

Podman jumped up, wielding both his MA5B and M90. He and Williams stood far apart, looking for the blues that had killed their comrade. They heard a rough voice shout out to them.

"It gives it above, soldiers. If you to leave to fall its weapons, us we will not blow it to the bits."
"Skirt where I can seeing!" Podman cried out bravely.
"Waits" said a familiar voice behind them.

The lieutenant and his men were inside the base. He, Hardy, Smith, and Jenkins all hurried toward them, rifles aimed straight ahead.

"I know that voice," said the blue sergeant. He openly walked out in front of the red soldiers who all had weapons pointed at his head. He removed his helmet. Podman gasped.

"Hello, Grif," said the blue sergeant.

"I know that voice."

The sergeant walked out in front of the six red soldiers pointing rifles at his face. He removed his helmet. Podman gasped. He knew that face.

"Hello, Grif. It is pleasant to see you another time."

The lieutenant made a face that looked like bitter dislike. Podman knew that the sergeant had caused his commanding officer a lot of trouble. Grif slowly returned the greeting.

"Hello, Donut."

The other four red soldiers' jaws dropped. Podman pulled back his visor.

"Waits! Donut was in the red squadron, right Sir?"
"Yes. It was with me when I was posted in outpost of Gulch of the Blood #1." "and now it is blue"
"Yes. You it is of the examples that more despicable I saw always, Donut of treason."
"Thank you," Donut laughed.

Grif removed his helmet, putting it on the ground and handing his MA5B to Podman. He began to walk slowly toward Donut.

"You it negotiated the pretty rose armor for a dark kind of the blue one. Why?"
"The blue squadron had more promise," Donut replied matter-of-factly.
"I see. You betrayed in the ones for its proper benefit. You it left us for dead because the blue ones had looked at better."
"Yes, for putting it simply."
"And I can ask what they do for you?" Grif said, his voice raising as he walked closer and closer.
"They had given to me to the excess of the command my proper squad," Grif replied, not backing up or looking at all scared. "Exactly that I was still First Sergeant."
"They had made me a lieutenant, and you it could have too much been one!" Grif shouted, now inches from Donut's face.
"I do not import myself with the rank."
"Then what do you import yourself with?" Grif whispered.
"Revenge."

Donut uttered the word so quietly that only Grif could hear. His lips moved so slightly that even Podman couldn't figure out what he'd said.

"For what?" Grif said, his voice cracking slightly.
"For what was on in the Blood Gulch."

Grif took a step back, his chin twitching with sheer hatred.

"We were messing just around," he muttered.
"And you he killed me almost."
"But what sufficient we did not to alert your rough betrayal. You coward is one."
"Calls me what you would, but you still will not make it outside of this alive base."
"What it makes it to think of that one?" Grif whispered menacingly.
"Launching we have got of the rocket and you has assault rifles. You have of the rifles of sniper---"

Grif suddenly grabbed hold of Donut's shoulders, spun him around, whipped out his M6D sidearm, and pointed it at the sergeant's head all in one seamless motion. The blue soldiers turned and shouldered their rocket launchers...

"Hold fire!" Donut bellowed.

Donut attempted to get away, but Grif's grip was like an iron vice that was felt even through the MJOLNIR armor. The sergeant winced in pain.

"You is of the blue, and I red. I can do what I have wanted to do for many of the years. Do not struggle."

Jenkins, Hardy, and Smith simultaneously shouldered their SRs, aimed at the heads of the leftover blue soldiers, and blew them apart.

"You do not have support and no plan. Thus typical coming of you. You it will be always a private a rose armor consuming of rookie in my mind."
"That anymore is not the case. I am one of the a majority revered sergeants in the blue squadron and I was granted a Medal of Congressional Honor. I am not a rookie."
"I am surprised that they had not given the purple armor to you when you transferred, Donut."
"Medics wear the purple one," Donut muttered.
"Medics wear the white, biatch!"
"What about--"
"He wasn't a medic," Grif grunted, clicking the safety off of his pistol.

Grif pulled the trigger, sending an armor piercing slug right into Donut's temple. The force broke Donut's neck and made him slump in Grif's arms. He dropped him coldly, spit on his body, then shouldered his MA5B.

"Examine the room of internal control and make examinations of any useful thing."
"Yes, sir," they all said quietly.
"I will explain everything soon to it."

The platoon entered the inner control room and found it emptied. There were stray weapons, shell casings, and wrecked computers scattered all over the place. There were only a few things that hadn't been destroyed: a refrigerator, a laptop, and a forgotten AI construct.
Grif grabbed the construct and stuck it in his armor. It was Donut's.
"I don't know you..." it said. "It says your name is Lieutenant Dexter Grif, serial number 9385902-4859DG."
"That's correct."

Podman opened the laptop and saw that it had a complete record of the Blue Squadron's past, present, and future campaigns and Donut's diary. Also, and very surprisingly, it also contained information about every soldier, red and blue, on the Battle Creek planet.

"It's a database...how did they had started this information?"
"Donut," Grif replied.
"But he could not have known each and every soldier..."
