Chapter one
As the DC-77 Pelican dropship broke through the cloud layer, a ray of sun washed over the large, white, letters painted on the side. MARINES. Lt. Charles M. Parker watched the large bulk of Mt. Friazan draw closer until a large clearing appeared in the forest canopy below. Parker guided the Pelican to treetop level and cut in the belly jets. As the Pelican dubbed R932 settled onto its skids, the company of ODST marines piled out onto the ground. A wash of hot air brushed against Sgt. Michael Rigets back as Romeo 932 lifted off. The MA7B Battle Rifle slung across his back clacked lightly against his ballistic armor. A rustling in a bush gripped the attention of the squad. A single, curious Grunt, Covenant cannon fodder, waddled into the clearing and froze as the sight of seven MA7Bs, three SMGs, two S2 AM snipers rifles, and an M19 Rocket launcher got a bead on his pointy little head. The plasma pistol clattered against a rock as the Covie raised his hands. A Private pulled a lenth of rope from his pack and tied the alien to a tree trunk, his legs kicking three feet from the ground. The Grunt looked as if he was going to yell until a Marine reached up and grabbed the breather mask attached to the aliens face. The grunt stopped struggling and the Marine let his hand fall away. Unfortunately, as the debacle with the Grunt was being dealt with, an Elite strode into the clearing. He gargled in suprise and yelled something the Marines didn't understand. A rustling in the underbrush provided the Marines with a good example of the trouble heading their way. Before Rigets could open his mouth a battle rifle popped and the Elite kicked back, blood flowing from a nasty head wound. A single green plasma bolt whipped into the clearing and punched a ODST on the helmet faceplate. The mirror coating on the visor flared and the Marines head snapped back. The ODSTs fired into the brush and plasma bolts rocketed back. Spent shell casings clattered off rocks and bushes. An M9 grenade detonated, sending three Grunts and a Jackal flying. The plasma fire tapered off as the surrounding Covenant scattered into the distance. Moments later, the LZ belonged to Fire Team Delta.
Chapter 2
A light mist fell over the encampment. Round canisters, some several meters long, dotted the clearing. As The airlock cycled open on one of them, a gold armored Covenant Elite stepped into the twilight. The two Jackals on patrol were chatting back and forth, but shut up and stood straighter as the Elite emerged. The Jackals night vision made them excellent scouts. However, who ever invented the shields didn't make them anywhere near as dim as the Jackals would have liked. The glowing ovals played hell with the aliens sight. That weakness gave the strike team one more badly needed advantage. Four hands reached out and snatched the Jackals, breaking their necks as they retracted into the brush. The matte black barrel of the S2 AM sniper rifle rested in a fork made by two branches. "Owl to Fox, Elite on the prowl." The sniper released the transmit button and peered through the scope. "Fox to Owl, give him the silent treatment." The smile on the snipers face melted into a look of concentration as the round circle of the scope settled over the Elites helmet. A round leapt from the barrel and caught the alien commander right between the eyes. The team called "Fox" moved into the clearing. The team moved from cylinder to cylinder, opening the doors long enough to lob a frag grenade in and then slamming the doors. "Area secure." Thom Patterson called. A smiling marine waved Patterson over to a cylinder. Through a porthole, the marine was watching a squad of Grunts writhe in agony as a fellow ODST shut off their methane supply. In a few moments the thumping from inside stopped. The Marines began to raid the remaining cylinders. One was an obvious Intel tent. Many were living quarters. One cylinder was thirty meters long by ten wide and was essentially a mess hall. The Marines from the LZ moved into the Covie camp. "Why can't I use it sarge? They ain't gonna." A Marine was standing in front of a Covenant Light Recon Aircraft, known to the UNSC as a Banshee. "One, because you don't know how to fly it." Patterson started. "Two, because the damn things make so much noise it'll give us all away. And three, BECAUSE I DAMN WELL SAID SO MARINE!!" The Private muttered something about using an M6D to hit the reset button in Sarges skull, and wandered away.
