"Well shit."

"I don't know, I've seen better."

"Better? He timed in at 3.002."

"It seemed more like 3.5 to me."

"Why is it that every time we find a prospective, you have to do this?"

"I don't know, maybe it's the fact that he doesn't even know what he's trying out for."

"That doesn't mean a damn thing and you know it. This kid is better than anything that we've seen. You know it. I know it. Anybody can clear a room, but who can do it in 3.002 seconds?"

"Fine, do the fucking operation, I don't even think it's worth the effort we put into it."

"This kid will make it worth it."

"I hope you're right"

For his whole life, Vincent had wanted to be faster, stronger, and better than all the others. It started in the first grade on the playground, and it stuck with him his whole life. The need to be better. He had impressed the brass with his tryout, now it was time to show everyone just how good he really was.

"Are you ready?"

Vincent looked over to see a doctor stnading stoutly in the doorway.

"They're ready to meet me?"

"Meet you? Your try-out was the meeting, you're ready to go strait to the operation."

"What?"

"It will be explained to you in the O.R."

"Oh, right..."

"Well, let's get going."

The light stung his eyes as he looked up. The lamps and the doctors' lights, all shining into his eyes, trying to blind him to what was really happening. They whispered and talked just soft enough so he could only make out bits and pieces of their convedrsation. The door behind Vincent swung open and shut with a click. He tried to look behind him, but his whole body felt like a stick, unable to move on its own. As he was layed back on an operating table, a general peered over him, looking strait into his eyes.

"You are about to be a part of an elite unit, one that has been in development ever since the beginning of the war."

Vincent tried to speak, but could only open his mouth to hiss out a few breaths.

"We know how badly you want to show everyone just how good you really are, and this exactly how you are going to do it."

Vincent wanted to leave, de didn't want to be here now.

"After the operation, you will feel stronger, you will feel faster, and you will feel so much smarter. Just lay back and let the doctors do their work. I'll see you after the operation"

Vincent tried to struggle, but he couldn't move any part of his body. He didn't know why, but he didn't want to be here now. One of the doctors spoke softly to him, trying to calm him.

"Vincent, listen to me, I want you to calm down. We can't help you if you don't stop moving. This will only take a little while and I promise you won't fell a thing"

Vincent tried to look away as one doctor slowly set to work cleaning a scalpel, he tried to remember his mother and home. The head doctor finally set to work with an dangerous looking intstrument hovering over his head. With the flip of a switch, the machine set about humming in a deep tone, and a compartment on its bottom flip open to reveal a shiny drill bit. Vincent could only look up in terror as the drill lowered down to his forehead. The doctor was right, Vincent couldn't feel the the machine drilling through his head. A couple times, Vincent awoke from unconciousness in the middle of the operation. One time, he tried to move his fingers, but when he looked down at his arm, he saw that he didn't have an arm or any fingers. And he thought for a moment, and realized that he didn't mind it. His brain was so clouded with narcotic pain-killers that when he tried to spell his name, he just couldn't stop giggling to himself.

When Vincent awoke again, he was lying in a different bed, this one had beautifull sunlight shining through a pane-glass window. When he tried to sit up, he saw that no longer did he have his own legs, he instead had two contraptions that resembled real legs, only they were metalic and covered in wires, hydrolics and lights. The legs were covered by plastic coverings filled with a creamy looking gelatin substance.

"How do you like your new body Vincent?"

He tore his tear-filled eyes away from his disgusting body to see the same general standing next to his bed.

"Wha-wha-what have you done t-t-to me?" He screamed.

"We gave you what you wanted, a life where you can be faster, stronger and smarter than anyone. Well, the smarter part is yet to come. But nonetheless, we're very pleased with your operation. You see, only five others out of 32 have survived the operation. And you, well you passed with flying colors. And all we ask of you, is that you use your new body, made for you by us, to fight the war between the Covenant. We have very high hopes for you Vincent."

"H-h-h-how am I going to live a normal life now"

"Vincent? Since when did YOU ever want a normal life? I think you should try to sleep now, you're going to start orientation and basic training tomorrow."

Vincent couldn't sleep, so he only stayed in his bed, looking out the window, trying not to look at his new body. In the back of his mind though, he thought to himself,

'Finally, everyone will see, they will see...'

CHAPTER 2: SUPERMAN

"I guess you do have a right to know just what we've augmented in your body" The doctor said as he looked carefully into each of my eyes with his light. Funny, You never notice the way your eyes feel in your head, unless they are either in pain, or in my case, have been reconstructed into bionic cameras. They feel colder.

"Well, first of all," he started out looking as if he was reading me a bedtime story, "We removed your arms from the shoulder down, replaced them with poly-carbon automated appendiges, and covered them in perma-plast skin, they won't burn even at 1200 degrees Farenheit." Just wait, it gets better I told myself. "Then, as you probably noticed, we replaced your eyes with bionic replacements, you'll be able to atain better than 20/10 vision in some of the darkest areas. They also are equipped with infra-red, heat-sensing and starlight vision augmentors."

"That's not all, is it?"

"Oh no, not for a long shot. We did the same thing we did to your arms as we did to your legs. We estimate top running speed will be around 50 miles per hour. Expect to feel a lot different when you walk, and don't try jumping, or you'll crack your spinal cord on the ceiling. It's happened before, very messy."

This can't be happening, it's all a part of a nightmere.

"After that, we placed a thin coated, perma-plast shield plate in front of your rib cage, under your skin. It can withstand a 50mm shell, fired at point-blank range, though, you won't have any skin on your chest after that. And we've basically done the same thing to all vital areas of your body: head, back, upper arms and legs, groin"

"So, basically I'm Superman with an iron crotch"

"Well, a perma-plast crotch, but yes on the Superman part."

"What makes you guys so certain that I won't kill you all for doing this to me?"

"Oh, it's simple, we put a behavioral restrainer chip in your now, 28% robotic brain. We turn it on when you're around us, and let you run wild when you fight on the battlefield. You might get a centimeter away from bashing my skull into the wall, but you'll stop at a centimeter, something in the back of your head will be telling you to stop, literally." He seemed amused at his own joke.

"You said something about 28% robotic brain, what else did you 'augment'?"

"Oh, well, that part hasn't been totally developed yet. You see, we need your brain to be able to handle the billions of data files and incoming information on the battlefield, and you need to be able to process it in the minimal time."

"I think I need to congragulate you men on a job well done. I don't know how to thank you all for doing this to me. Maybe, I could start by shoving my fist into your stomache, pull out something and show it to you before you die."

"That might be a little hard to do, when we see everything you do, and control everything you do."

"Maybe I could just dissappear."

"Hmmmm."

The door in the room opened, and a short corporal glanced at the doctor, who got up and shuffled out of the room. The corporal turned to me and said in a hurried nervous voice, "The general says that you should get some rest and practice getting used to your new body."

"Tell the general that I don't need any fucking orders from him, and that his little 'tin-man' will be ready to do whatever the general has in store."

The corporal nodded with a smirk and closed the door quietly.

"Son of a bitch"
