Accidental Mission

The Master Chief tugged at his uniform, walked onto the bridge and reported directly to the Captain. He chanced a look at the monitor and frowned. A Covenant Cruiser occupied the full of the screen which did nothing to settle his feeling of defenselessness.
He had been called to the bridge to receive orders and could only hope that those orders asked for him to take action. He hated it when he wasn't needed.
"Sir!" the Master Chief called out as he halted at the Captain's station. "Reporting for duty!"
The Captain rolled around in his chair to face him, and smiled.
"Master Chief," he replied. "I would like you do something that involves accidentally falling inside a covenant ship and accidentally landing it where the UNSC can accidentally learn information to help us win this war."
The Master Chief frowned.
"You want this mission to be 'accidental', sir?
"Accidentally top secret," the Captain corrected as he paused to take a deep breath. "We're losing this war, Chief. We need to make some type of drastic move that would give us a serious leg up. We can only break the rules so many times without the press giving the illusion we have no chance against the bad guys. Earth must believe we can win this war without Covenant technology."
"I understand, sir," the Master Chief replied.
And he did. Earth needed to know that UNSC could handle this war. It would be much easier for them if they were to believe the military was using technology taken from the enemy but not needed. He nodded and tucked his arms behind the small of his back.
"Right," the Captain continued. "Embark immediately! You will command a team of Orbital Drop Shock Troopers, who I'm sure, would be more than willing to taste a bit of outside space. You have all the time you need, but the faster you work the better."
The captain reached over and pulled a disk out of a nearby portal.
"Oh, and take Cortana," he ordered pleadingly. "Dismissed!"
The Master Chief took the disk, saluted and left the bridge immediately. He made his way down to the rec room where about thirty ODST's sat waiting for his orders. He briefed them on the mission and watched as faces turned pale.
"I realize this isn't your type of mission. Your training, however, will help you. Now, come on! Earth needs this!"
As he watched everyone set to work he noticed a lone marine sneaking into the locker room. He followed and watched around the corner as the scrawny marine quickly pulled on armor belonging to an unsuspecting ODST's. He caught the man's name on his tag and pulled back from his line of sight; Jenkins.
He was about to confront the man but his attention was needed elsewhere in the room.
"What is it?" the Master Chief asked an ODST who looked as though he was going to be sick.
"I—" the man began nervously. "I—can't go."
The Chief paused. It was unlike an ODST to be intimidated by the idea of danger.
"Why?"
A woman with bright orange hair stepped up behind him. As she did, the Master Chief quickly caught a glimpse of a few men cleaning up a rather large pile of vomit. The ODST had already thrown up.
"Jeff can't handle—space—very well," the women informed him.
The Master Chief raised an eyebrow but nodded.
"We'll have to do with twenty-nine then," he decided. "Get some rest."
The man shuffled away slowly and the Master Chief looked around trying to remember what he was going to do. He passed through the locker room and went about trying to climb into his armor. Having some difficulty, he called over the only ODST already prepared for the drop.
"Help me into this armor?" he asked.
He directed the ODST for fifteen frustrating minutes as the ODST pushed all the wrong buttons and tried to attach the leg piece to his arm. By the time they had finished, every other ODST was armed with thruster packs ready; and had been ready for five minutes. The Master Chief deposited Cortana into his helmet, quickly grabbed his battle rifle and attached a few frag grenades to his belt. He turned to the ODST who had been helping him.
"Thanks," he said.
The ODST nodded.
After they lined up in the shuttle bay, the Chief counted thirty ODST's. He supposed the sick one decided to come anyway, but didn't give it a second thought. They were ready to go. He gave the order to open the hatch and they were all pulled out and left to gain the little control they had in zero gravity. The Master Chief opened a channel.
"Spread out," he ordered.
He received a serious of quick replies and cringed against the noise. He missed his fellow Spartans.
The Captain planned to launch a decoy ship to tempt the Covenant Cruisers with firepower enough so that they would get angry enough to fire back. It was at this point that the Covenant shields lowered to supply more power to the plasma generators. It would give the ODST's just barley enough time to grab hold of the surface and climb in. The Master Chief knew every ODST wouldn't make it to the rendezvous point, but they were instructed to return to the ship if they missed. They had only one chance.
As the Master Chief sped toward the surface of the ship he caught a glimpse of light flash over his shoulder as the decoy ship fired the first shot. He turned his thrusters to full power and shut them down when he was closer. He glided rapidly toward the ship and saw the shields disappear as the Covenant prepared to fire. He landed hard and used his arms to swing toward the meeting point.
An ODST was there waiting for him; only one. He checked his Heads Up Display and noticed the time. He frowned as the timer counted away against the window his team needed to enter the ship.
"Time's up!" he called out. "Get here now, or go back!"
He spotted four ODST's coming from separate directions and readied the hatch for them to enter. The ODST already with him, jumped in feet first and the Chief held open the door for the others. But it was too late.
The Master Chief felt his armor twinge with electrical energy and knew the Covenant shields were reviving. He fought the movement as the ship turned.
Realizing this was his only chance; he jumped in and let the door close behind him. It was just him and a single ODST. The odds were bad, but he had never lost before.
