Marty Waxes Poetic (or maybe just his back)
Most of us seem to have missed a short little interview that Major Nelson conducted with Marty O'Donnell outside Grauman's Chinese Theater on Tuesday; Marty discussed the musical choices they made, and why the trailer felt as it did. An interesting little piece - and visual evidence that the shirt that Kotaku mentioned a couple of days ago was, indeed, a Halo 3 shirt. You can watch it in both high- and low-res streaming versions from this page on Xbox.com (scroll down to 'Halo Audio Director') - and for those of you who simply can't deal with .asx files, you can grab a 4 mb QuickTime version from us. Organized Halo 3 Content at R.net
Over at Rampancy.net, Narcogen has lost no time organizing the Halo 3 content out at this point; you'll find a new Halo 3 Movies page, containing local mirrors of the announcement trailer, a Halo 3 Articles page, containing local mirrors for Bungie's Halo 3 comments, and a Halo 3 Image Gallery, which contains both official screenshots and some interesting screengrabs that have been intriguing forumgoers everywhere for the last couple of days. It's a Floor Wax. It's a Dessert Topping!
Normally, we let speculation run its course on our forum - trying to decipher what Bungie meant with some obscure tidbit is more than half the fun, after all. Sometimes, though, the little stuff really gets in the way; our forum has been swamped today, for example, with debates about one of Cortana's dialogue snippets in the trailer - half the debaters believe she's saying 'I am your sword', and the other half hear 'I am your source'. Well, according to Marty O'Donnell, who really should know... it's 'sword'. Carry on. (Hey - did you notice how I slipped in a small Dialogue Databank update there, courtesy of KMS Ahrnaieanin? Lots of Trailers Versions Online
There are a whole bunch of sites offering mirroring or re-encoding of the Halo 3 trailer; I really don't see a need to list them all, because the official sites (Bungie.net and Xbox.com) are doing an admirable job of keeping up with demand. (Bungie.net has actually re-released the WMP9 versions, because the original ones had some odd aspect stuff going on.) The one link that's probably worth passing on, though - at least if you're on a Windows box with a pretty fast processor - is the official press release of the 720p WMP version - 5.1 audio and all. It weighs in at 132 mb, and is USELESS for Mac users (it's encoded with Windows-only codecs), but it's as high-res as you're gonna get on the web. Thanks, MC Smoke. (And I'll mention the Halo: Portable versions, too, because there aren't a lot of places out there to grab versions for your PocketPC/iPod/PSP.) (Louis Wu 13:12:19 UTC)

Forum High Gear
Predictably, the forum has exploded with speculation about yesterday's released trailer. Much of the discussion could be considered spoiler-laden, for folks either avoiding the trailer or still in the dark about the first two games... but I'm of the opinion that there's nothing here that Bungie doesn't want you to see. A few intriguing threads (by no means ALL the stuff worth reading):
- Dogchow was the first, but Big Lou's version is nice, too - it's Cortana's voice, but who's really speaking?
- Many, many threads are discussing the re-emergence of content from the Cortana letters, released 7 years ago, but left behind after some overzealous use by a now-ex-Bungie employee. Search for 'Cortana Letter', all, to find a few.
- There are lots of people happy to see the Assault Rifle back, there's plenty of speculation about the Chief's visor reflection, people noticed stuff like missing Banshee pilots, and there are folks looking at some of the images flashing through the trailer, attempting to decipher hidden meanings. Pixel by pixel analysis continues apace.
- Rachda and GLuebben took a look at the forerunner glyphs once again, in light of this trailer (check this post for a clearer version of GLeubben's PDF).
Again - this is by no means a comprehensive list. Over 1200 new posts have appeared on our forum in the last 24 hours (before this announcement, we were averaging 2-300/day). It's just a random selection of fun stuff. See what else you can find. (Louis Wu 12:53:01 UTC)

Halo 3 Content Now Up
For what it's worth: The Halo 3 content at Bungie.net is available. (Up until now, clicking any of the links in the Top Story or on B.net's home page simply redirected to the home page... but the section is now live.) The screenshots are all from the trailer (though they're considerably clearer than screengrabs), and the only wallpaper available is a 'Finish the Fight' one. The FAQ is worth reading - especially the bit about how the trailer is a real-time piece of work. That is: this trailer is NOT like the X02 trailer, which was rendered in-engine, but not in real time; this was recorded in real time, off stock Xbox 360 hardware. Yes, it looks that good. The announcement trailer is available for all - in QT and WMP9 formats (with more options coming soon, looks like) - plus Screenshots, Storyboards, Wallpapers, a new FAQ, an About page, and a new forum. Gameplay May Change Trailer
You might remember 'Gameplay May Change During Online Play', a vid released about a month ago, to great reviews; the creators have decided to send it around to the machinima sites, and wanted a trailer to break the ice. Heh - there's a very cool vid available over at GameTrailers - a Tekken-style fight between two guys from the University of Rhode Island, one wearing Halo regalia. Vendetta
Zukan created a trailer for Vendetta, a trilogy he's planning to make in the next few months; it's garnered a TON of decent press to date, both from the general public, and from the MPRRS reviewers. It's really, really well done - I'm looking forward with great anticipation to the final product. Grab a copy for yourself, and decide - the QuickTime version is higher quality (and 49.5 mb), but the WMP9 version is just fine too (and 30.3 mb). Go watch. (Louis Wu 03:01:20 UTC)

Operation: Backwash Trailer
Treeskunk Productions, the guys behind Outpost: Coagulation, have started a new series, entitled 'Outpost: Backwash'. The series trailer made it through the MPRRS yesterday; they weren't looking for hosting, but since their downloads page offers only WMP9 format (22.9 mb), we're providing a QuickTime link (21.4 mb). Halzred's 5th Montage
Z sent us word that Halzred's 5th Montage is now available for download (we mentioned the trailer for it back in January). It's 106 mb, in WMP9 format; it's definitely more about the look-and-feel than about the gameplay. (Don't get me wrong - the gameplay's pretty impressive, what you can see of it - it's just that this movie is REALLY heavy on the editing effects.) Frantic's Montage Trailer, by Halzred
Halzred submitted a montage trailer he'd created for Frantic to the MPRRS - and the reviewers liked it. River Styx
Elnea (who's known around here for her artwork, and around Red vs Blue for her funny journals) and OboeCrazy (who's not known around here at all, but is pretty visible at RvB) put together a trailer for an upcoming machinima that does what hasn't been done yet, that I know of - it incorporates footage from Halo, the Sims, and World of Warcraft (and in fact integrates them, so a Sims character is talking to a Pelican pilot who's flying over a WoW landscape, for example); this is pretty cool stuff. You can grab a copy in a whole bunch of different flavors:
- MedRes - 540x360: QT (28.7 mb) | DivX (20.6 mb) | WMP9 (30.9 mb)
- LowRes - 360x240: QT (11.6 mb) | DivX (11.2 mb) | WMP9 (11.6 mb)

Immortal Montage Trailer
rywateska is putting together a new 'Immortal Montage', and he submitted the trailer to the MPRRS recently. Went over quite well. It's quite short, and you can grab it in two different form-factors; 640x428 (about 12 mb, QuickTime or WMP9) or 420x280 (about 8 mb, QuickTime or WMP9). Team Conquest's Outbreak Trailer
Okay... this is pretty odd. About a month ago, mike0619 of Team Conquest submitted a vid to the MPRRS called 'Outbreak'. It received high marks from every reviewer... except one. That one accused the team of plagiarism, and rated the film so low that it failed, even though everyone else passed it. It would have died there... except about a week ago, mike contacted me to ask about what had happened... and I reviewed the film. There was no plagiarism whatsoever, and in fact it's a pretty nice trailer (typos in the text aside). Be aware that this vid has no relation at all to the Outbreak trailer released last week by 3x8 Productionz. It's a separate machinima, produced by a different group, though it, too, involves mods. Definitely worth a look! We've got an WMP9 version (17.2 mb) or a QuickTime version (20.8 mb) - grab the one that suits you. And to the entire team... we're sorry for the confusion! Apocalypse Rising Trailer
Matt6908 submitted a trailer for his upcoming 'Apocalypse Rising' trailer to the MPRRS - and it passed this evening. Outbreak trailer passes MPRRS
This is one of those rare occasions when someone wants the feedback and no hosting. The trailer for the new four part series Outbreak passed with flying colors. A flood infection is spreading fast and the elites have come to earth to stop it. Heretics and Heroes Ep 1
You may remember Heretics & Heroes, a series that posted a trailer and a character intro recently; well, they've got Episode 1, "Operation: Frozen Spleen", online now. Filmed in the original Halo engine (this episode takes place before the issuance of Mark VI armor), Ep 1 will introduce you to Lt. Feldman, and the rather unpleasant job he's been tasked with.
