Sometimes the oldest are the best
KreativeKill loves the original Halo - and is still making videos. He just stopped by with links to an older Mike Miller-inspired montage, as well as his newest creation, Slow Motion Chaos Theatre. (It's exactly what it sounds like.) He says there's plenty more coming, so stay tuned! (Louis Wu 17:09:01 UTC)

Tyrant's Halo 2 Walkthrough - Triple Play
The Tyrant has stepped up his rate of walkthrough chapter completions - to make up for the fact that his coverage of Gravemind isn't finished yet, he's released guides for Uprising, High Charity, and The Great Journey. (There's also a shout-out to Mike Miller in that last one.) We're getting close! (Louis Wu 17:01:04 UTC)

Halo 3 Mythic Walkthrough
HBO has a long history of helping fans get through the toughest parts of Halo Campaign play - Asmodeus wrote up a Legendary Walkthrough of Halo, and Mike Miller put together a much-lauded guide that could get you through Halo 2 on Legendary. For Halo 3, Daniel Morris (AKA Tyrant) has upped the ante - not content with a guide for muddling through on plain old Legendary, he's built a Mythic Walkthrough - Solo, Legendary, All Skulls On. This is Halo 3 at its most difficult - Legendary difficulty, using 9 gold skulls, 4 silver ones (and don't think the silver ones are all sweetness and light - the Blind skull, for example, removes your HUD, meaning you have no easy access to health or weapon status, and you have no reticule for targeting). Just showing a runthrough, though, would be somewhat useless, from the standpoint of teaching you useful skills - if that's all you want, you should swing by High Speed Halo and check out the SLASO runs. No, what Tyrant gives you is much, much more useful - it's a guide you can follow that will get most of us actually THROUGH THE GAME on this difficulty. There are several pages of general tips, and then a guide for each specific level. We'll be releasing one level per week - there are a lot of video clips that go with each level, and we want to make sure we have the bandwidth to support everyone who wants to try this. First up - Sierra 117. Read the text, watch the video clips (download them, so you can refer to them during your run)... and you're well on your way to finishing Halo at its most challenging! Request for content
Over the years, we've become known as a repository for certain static types of Halo information. Today, there are more sites out there that are collecting data... but we feel that having local copies of the more important stuff simply... makes sense. Fansites come and go, after all.

With the release of Halo 3, we're looking to build these sections up. Some of them we've already gotten started on; we have a volunteer working on filming the cutscenes, to add to our Cutscene Library, I've contacted Mike Miller about a Halo 3 Legendary Guide (though that might be a while in coming; he's got some commitments that are more important than Halo at the moment), and there are some people working on a full multimedia library of the Halo 3 Terminals. There is still need for more volunteer help, however; we'd love to have transcripts of all the campaign levels, for example. If you're interested in this, here's what you should know: we're interested in the dialogue for all difficulties, we're interested in accuracy, and we're interested in mainly scripted material. (It's not very important - or practical - to try and catalogue the combat dialogue you hear - after all, there are 20,000 lines of it. But Cutscene dialogue, and in-game scripted material, including difficulty variants, are definitely wanted.) Send us some email (at halostory@bungie.org) telling us which level(s) and at which difficulties you'd like to work on, so that there's not too much overlap. And thanks! (Louis Wu 20:12:09 UTC)

New Content at Halo: Portable
Funkmon wrote to let us know about a bunch of new updates over at Halo: Portable. They've put up some new machinima mirrors, some classic Mike Miller content and a new Podcast. Go grab the podcast for your commute to work and/or school. Try not to watch the movies while driving, though. (KP 08:53:50 UTC)

Legend 3 - Sort Of
Years ago, Mike Miller created 'Legend', and a followup, 'Legend 2' - these were basically Halo 1 campaign montages showing some really elegant gameplay at Legendary difficulty - the trick wasn't so much the difficulty, but the style with which the gameplay was performed. He was good enough that we asked him to create a Legendary Walkthrough of Halo 2, when it came out - and he did an awesome job. So today, when I opened up the forum, I was intrigued when I read this post - an anonymous poster (who went so far as to post via a proxy, so we couldn't check IP addresses) has created 'Legend 3' - which, he disclaims, is really only an homage to Mike's work, and will hopefully be REPLACED by a 'true' Legend 3 from Mike himself. I downloaded it - and I found that Halo Legend did a great job of following in Mike's footsteps; it's not about the kills, it's about HOW the kills happen. From fantastic flight control while sword-flying to a great no-scope on a perched elite to a truly novel way of killing a Major Sentinel, this vid is full of great clips. We've mirrored the original QuickTime version (linked in the forum post, 67.2 mb), and added a WMP9 version, as well (59.2 mb). Go watch - and maybe try and figure out who posted this! Halo Base interviews Cody Miller
Legend, from Halo Base, sent word about an interview with Cody Miller, the Halo world speedrunning champion (heh). It's primarily a discussion of his 3 and a half hour Legendary No-Deaths run that won this year's Twin Galaxies challenge - it's a fascinating read! (The Halo Base staff confused Cody with Mike Miller at one point, and Cody didn't correct them directly, but otherwise, they got it right on.) It's available in both English and German - read the one that's easier for you! (Louis Wu 21:00:15 UTC)

Halo No-Shot
A long time ago, Mike Miller released a movie showing a shot-free clearing of the top of the gravity lift in Truth & Reconciliation, on Legendary. I was suitably impressed... but remember, it's just one room. Took him 4 minutes. Self Induced has now completed a no-shot run... on the entire level of Halo. No shots fired. On Legendary. The whole level. Insanity. (I don't know that I could do this, even if I had the SKILL for it - just watching him, I was twitching my trigger finger instinctively.) Ducain was impressed enough with this to provide a mirror, just in case. Go watch this... it's really cool. (75 or 100 mb, WMP9 format.) (Louis Wu 02:46:40 UTC)

Behind the Scenes with Joseph Staten
Joseph Staten, a graduate of Northwestern University, will be back at his alma mater on April 22 to talk about Halo, and the writing of its story. It's part of a full day of seminars from NWU alumni - the full day is $65 (with lunch), a half day is $45, and a single seminar is $20. (Unless you're a Northwestern student, in which case it's $5.) Registration deadline is April 14, a week from today - if you're in the Evanston, IL area, and you'd like to hear Joe talk about how Halo was made, sign up! Thanks to Mike Miller for the heads-up. The Hand that Feeds
It's the end of the month, and we happen to have a bit of bandwidth left over. So I went through some of the recent rejections from the Movie Peer Review Rating System, and I found a film I wanted to post. Partly, it's because I enjoyed it - it's the story of the Arbiter, set to 'The Hand that Feeds', by Nine Inch Nails. It mixes cutscene footage with gameplay footage, and does a nice job synching the music to the action. Partly, though, I was hugely amused by some of the comments this film received from reviewers - it taught me that context is EVERYTHING. You need to understand that this film, put together by Epyon, uses cutscene footage from our Cutscene Library, and gameplay footage, taken from Mike Miller's Legendary Walkthrough. None of the footage is original to this film. (That's not what makes it funny, though that IS what disqualified it in the eyes of several reviewers.) The funny part is this: the footage, while recognized by some reviewers, was totally missed by others - there were comments like "this whole thing was just cutscenes with mediocre gameplay mixed in," or even better, "Try doing gameplay footage on legendary, and pull off some awesome moves, like Mike Miller on the Legendary walkthroughs." My eyes were watering, reading this stuff. So it seems only fair to release the film and let others see it, as well. It's 15.3 mb in QuickTime format, or 15.7 mb in WMP9 format. (I guess Mike's gameplay looks much more awesome when viewed in the context of the walkthrough itself...) And for anyone who doesn't believe Mike has what it takes, after seeing his footage put together like this, I'd remind you of clips like this (in QT, or if you'd rather, in WMP9) - it's all in how you look at it. Okay, back to hotdogs and chicken wings - I hope you're all enjoying this Memorial Day! (Louis Wu 18:08:00 UTC)

The End of Something I Did Not Want to End...
In late January, Mike Miller began a Legendary Walkthrough of Halo 2, and for the next four months, he'd release a new level, once per week (or so), with hints, multiple plans of attack, and plenty of video examples, to help you get through what (at first) seemed nearly impossible. Today, that guide is finished; Mike's writeup of The Great Journey, Halo 2's final level, has been posted. It contains more than a dozen movies, as usual in both QuickTime and WMP9 formats for your viewing convenience, and quite a bit of discussion about tactics and approaches. There are also some very practical—though non-trivial to implement, especially for folks like me, somewhat less coordinated than Mike—ideas for the final battle with Tartarus; give it a read! I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Mike for his work on this project; even when the skills needed were out of my league, the consistent quality of the writing, the thoughtfulness and comprehensiveness of the analyses, the practicality of the video aids - all the pieces he put together were polished, professional, and clean. I'm proud to have been able to help get this guide out to the Halo community, and I know that Mike's gotten quite a few people through the game on a difficulty level they might not have reached on their own! Update: DOH! I forgot - he also updated a few bits on the intro page (mostly near the bottom). In fact, it's been updated 4 or 5 times since it was first posted; if you haven't read it through in a while, it might be worth another look! (Louis Wu 16:33:28 UTC)

Legendary Walkthrough: High Charity
Mike Miller's Halo 2 Legendary Walkthrough continues to grow with High Charity - it's dark, it's messy, he gets through it fast. Seven vids, to help you through the rough parts. Say goodbye to the Master Chief! (Louis Wu 14:23:03 UTC)

Uprising - on Legendary
Sometimes, days just don't go as you plan. Mike Miller got the materials for his latest Legendary Walkthrough chapter, Uprising, in on time... but events here have conspired to keep me from posting the link. Go look at it; the man CONTINUES to blow me away. Sometimes it's because he's just so dang accurate with his grenade throws... but sometimes, it's because he comes up with a simple (yet to me, completely new) way of looking at a problem - and solving it. 13 videos, in either QuickTime or WMP9 formats, will get you through this beautiful but deadly level in multiple ways. Check it out! (Louis Wu 20:39:33 UTC)

Uprising - next week
Quick note, just so folks don't get antsy... Mike Miller's release of Uprising for his Legendary Walkthrough won't be coming out today - he wanted a bit more time to go over a few parts. We'll be releasing it next Tuesday, instead. Sorry for the delay! (Louis Wu 23:00:37 UTC)

Hunters and Jackals and Brutes, Oh My!
Gravemind might be the single most difficult level in Halo 2 - which is one of the reasons it took Mike Miller two weeks to churn out the Gravemind chapter of his Legendary Walkthrough. His hard work will make it much easier for you, however; he's created a monster piece, with 20 individual video clips (totalling almost 100 mb, depending on the flavor you choose) to help you through the level with the fewest casualties. There are some 'omg I can't believe I didn't think of that' tricks in this walkthrough - or at least there were, for me. (The lift ambush technique is brilliant, if daring.) Go read, download, and try it for yourself! (Louis Wu 20:05:01 UTC)

We will post no Gravemind before its time.
Ack! Almost forgot. Mike Miller's next installment of his Halo 2 Legendary Walkthrough, a look at Gravemind, will not be released today - it's a pretty complicated level, and he wants to make sure it's done right. We're shooting for next week; in the meantime, make sure you're up to snuff on the rest of the finished levels! (Louis Wu 22:05:36 UTC)

They're Gonna Send You Home to Mother...
Mike Miller continues his dash through Halo 2 Legendary - literally. Quarantine Zone has been posted... and (like last week) Mike's decided that discretion is the better part of valor. Translated, that means 'run like hell'. I couldn't help thinking about all the lucky rocket shots that took me out during parts of this level, and how you might find yourself doing it more than once... but all in all, it's a pretty speedy way through. Don't get comfortable thinking that running will always get you out of trouble, though - Gravemind is next, and there ain't no easy way out. For now, though - go check out Quarantine Zone on crank! Operation: Run Like a Mofo
Mike Miller's Halo 2 Legendary Walkthrough continues - this week it's Sacred Icon. It's a short chapter - because it's a relatively short level. (Especially the way Mike does it.) Go read - and watch. And kick some butt. (Louis Wu 14:09:27 UTC)

I Regret... nothing.
Mike Miller once again comes through - what can arguably be called the most difficult level in Halo 2 now has a Legendary Walkthrough to help you along. Regret went up today - with 15 movies showing you a multitude of techniques that can get you past the hard stuff. Mix them in with Mike's clear writing (and amusing commentary on the things he DOESN'T like) and you end up with a great read, even if (like me) your chances of actually USING this guide to get through the level on Legendary are about as good as Punxsutawney Phil's chances of avoiding humans on February 2. Check it out! (Louis Wu 19:22:46 UTC)

Back into the Breach
Mike Miller's Legendary Walkthrough grows by another chapter - Delta Halo is now posted. Sixteen vids will help you get through this gorgeous level in style. (Be sure to check the main page, as well; there are a few updates, most notably the Sword Flying information added yesterday.) Mike's not sure whether he'll make the Tuesday deadline for Regret... but whenever it comes out, it'll be worth the wait. (Louis Wu 17:19:29 UTC)

Oracle, dissected
Deep thanks to Mike Miller, who submitted his Oracle chapter of the Halo 2 Legendary Walkthrough early enough that Louis could format it and prepare it for the masses before he left. Because of Mike's consideration, you can read it on time, today, rather than at the end of this week. This level contains the first 'Boss Battle' in Halo 2 - and Mike shows you how to completely sidestep this annoying addition. 7 movies in all for this level. Pax. (Crux Fidelis 12:56:05 UTC)

The Legend Continues
It's Tuesday again... that means it's time for another installment of Mike Miller's Halo 2 Legendary Walkthrough. This time around, it's The Arbiter - Mike gives you multiple ways of dealing with multiple problems, with lots and lots of visuals. (There are 12 movies this time around.) I found myself feeling rather inadequate at grenade-sticking after watching a few of these... but one of the best ways to improve is to practice, and this guide can help keep you alive long enough to make that a feasible option. (Louis Wu 16:45:59 UTC)

If it's Tuesday, it must be Metropolis
The next chapter of Mike Miller's Legendary Walkthrough has gone live - find the hints that will get you through Metropolis, a gorgeous - though limited in exploration potential - level. There are 5 movies this time around, highlighting some of the strengths - and pitfalls - of the gameplay here. Mike has also added a bit to the Introduction; be sure to scan it for an extra tip! Update: Oops, sorry, the movie filenames were mis-capitalized, and so the links didn't work. Fixed! Reload the Metropolis page for the corrections. (Louis Wu 13:05:11 UTC)
