Halo 2 Best Console Game, says GCA
Thanks to iZoD, who reminded us that the Game Critics Awards were announced today. Halo was nominated for several awards, but was beaten out by Half-Life 2 in every category except Best Console Game. (Still, for a studio now devoted to console titles, that's not a bad honor...) (Louis Wu 18:25:12 UTC)

GCA - Nominees Announced
Since 1998, the Game Critics Awards have been given out to the most promising video games shown each year at E3. In 1999, Oni (PC) took Best Action/Adventure game. In 2000, Halo (for PC) took runner-up for Best Game, PC, and won Best Action Game. (It was nominated for Best of Show and Best Original Game, as well.) In 2001, the Xbox version was nominated for Best Action Game (but lost out to Rogue Squadron 2). In 2002, it wasn't nominated for anything (Bungie didn't even show up at E3 2002, really). For 2003, nominees were announced yesterday... and the Halo franchise garnered a hefty handful of nominations. Halo 2 is in the running for Best of Show, Best Console Game, and Best Action Game, and Halo PC is in the running for Best PC Game. Winners will be announced on June 10. Good luck to Bungie and Gearbox! (Louis Wu 15:39:44 UTC)

Who's the Ultimate Halo Fan?
Another entry into the Biggest Halo Fan contest recently held by Bungie came from Brian Josselyn, aka Blackstar. Production quality is pretty high... you've already seen the winner (Red vs Blue's Public Service Announcement), another finalist (Elan Sleazbagano's BHFC), and Maverick's Halo Creations... now check out Blackstar's Ultimate Halo Fan vid. 21.2 mb, 320x240, QuickTime. (The original was bigger, and the credits more readable - blame me, not Brian, for this version.) (Louis Wu 09:10:34 UTC)

Halo Art - Amazes and Delights
Quick Pillar of Art contest update: we spent a good chunk of today going over most of the entries. Some entries are still in Seattle; they'd been displayed at the fanfest, and haven't made it back to us yet. For this reason, and because some of the judges need a little extra time to see some of the entries, we've postponed the announcement of the winners; it should happen a week or so after the original date (May 26). It's going to be tough - many of the entries are amazing. As soon as we've pinned it all down, a gallery page will be made available, so that the world can see what these folks put together. I think you'll be as impressed as we were. (Louis Wu 01:14:03 UTC)

Film competition? Oh, yeah...
The Academy of Machinima Arts & Sciences is now looking for films. From their official announcement:

The Academy of Machinima Arts & Sciences has officially opened its 2003 Call for Entries, accepting submissions of Machinima works for this year’s Machinima Film Festival (Machinima films are films made within a real-time virtual 3D environment, i.e. 3D game engine). The early submission deadline is August 1, 2003 and the final deadline is September 15, 2003. This year’s festival is to be held in New York City in October 2003.

Visit the site and look around - and think about an entry if you're so inclined! (Louis Wu 09:35:37 UTC)

Bungie Trivia Contest - all done!
It was up a bit longer than it was supposed to be - blame deanero and his fine hospitality for the 12-player lanfest that ran for 5 or 6 hours this evening. The Bungie Trivia contest has been taken offline at this point, and we'll be announcing the winners as soon as SketchFactor gets back to Seattle and settles in - probably Monday. Over 300 people took the online test - with almost a third of those attempting to take it more than once. (Shame on you! :) ) Thanks for your participation... and again, the winner(s) (and their prize(s)) will be announced soon! (Louis Wu 09:10:17 UTC)

America's Biggest Fan... still undecided
SketchFactor let us know that although the America's Biggest Halo Fan Contest was supposed to have been decided today, they're running a bit behind, and plan to make an announcement sometime in the next day or two. Be patient, folks! (Louis Wu 20:34:30 UTC)

Pillar of Art - It's Almost Time...
For those who don't remember, we announced a major bungie.org contest, the Pillar of Art, a few months ago. We wanted to take this opportunity to remind you that the deadline for submissions is now less than three weeks away; we need to RECEIVE your submission by May 16, 2003. (If you mail it on the 15th, the likelihood of our receiving it before the deadline is... well, not very good.) There's an added bonus to mailing your entry now, though: any work that we get our hands on by May 9th, 2003, we'll consider hauling with us to Los Angeles, where it will be on display during the Bungie Fanfest. (This will not in any way affect your chances in the contest itself; if it goes, you don't get special consideration, and if it doesn't, you don't get penalized... it's just a chance to show your work off to more Halo fanatics, and to Bungie themselves. Also, we're not promising to carry everything we get early; remember, we're headed out to LA on airplanes.) To date, we've received just a few entries, but an enormous amount of interest - make sure that your entry doesn't miss the deadline! (Cash and glory, people... cash and glory.) Chupa-thingy at E3.

E3 is just 2 weeks away and as it gets closer so does the Bungie Fanfest. As is the tradition from previous fanfests, there are going to be exclusives that only folks that attend the event will get to experience. Hey, Bungie has to reward those of you that are traveling far (some from Italy!) just to sniff Chucky's sleeve.

SketchFactor has already announced that a surprise mystery guest will attend. Who do you think it is? Speculation is running rampant. heh :)

But on to today's new announcement: It is Bungie's great honor to welcome the guys behind the RedvsBlue videos. Not only will they be around to sign your girlfriend's breast, but DVD-quality versions of their videos will be playing on the big screen! And here's the kicker: They are working on a special video just for the fanfest. The premise for this "Special E3 Video" is so funny that even the folks at Bungie can't wait to see it!

This is truly shaping up to be the Fanfest to beat all Fanfests. How will Bungie top it next year? One can only wonder, but I'm bringing my galoshes.

The Megg Goes Home
Whoa - and the load shall be lightened. Gawyn [subnova] popped onto our forum to announce that Subnova has created an 'Official Megg Forum', dedicated to the search for the Megg. Benefits to visitors include feedback from the only folks who actually know where the dang thing is... benefits to HBO forumgoers should be even more obvious. From now on, Megg speculation should take place at the home of the Megg! Now the HBO forum can get back to more important things, like discussions of pie. (Louis Wu 20:29:12 UTC)

Righting a wrong
In November, 2002, we posted an announcement of a movie called 'Heaven and Hell'. In it, we stated that it showed, for the first time, the bottom of the Silent Cartographer main shaft. What we forgot was that in December, 2001, barely a month after the Xbox was released, we had put up an announcement for a DIFFERENT movie... which showed the same thing. That film (Team 7hr33's livefromtheshaftfloor.mov) never actually showed anything of the floor itself; the player on the bottom spent all of his time looking up. (I think I must have thought that they were almost, but not all the way, down because of this when I wrote up the Heaven and Hell post.) However, upon exploring Team 7hr33's website, there is a DIFFERENT film (dated June 6, 2002) which shows plenty of bottom-of-the-shaft footage (last movie on the page)... my bad entirely for overlooking this. Rightful credit for the first film of the bottom of the main Silent Cartographer shaft (not the Security Shaft) should go to Team 7hr33, all the way back before Christmas, 2001. RvB PSA now AFD
For those who didn't register at the Red vs. Blue site yesterday, your wait is over; the Public Service Announcement is now available to the general public. Go grab it... it's pretty funny. In DivX or QT, high or lo-res. Thanks to Buzby for the heads-up. Update: we got word from Eclarap that Halo-Game, in France, has mirrored the first three RvB movies; if you're on that side of the Atlantic, you might have better download luck there. Blood Gulch Ballet, done prettier
A few weeks ago, we announced a movie called 'Blood Gulch Ballet', by Rory Hartley and Bill Copeland. It was fun to watch, but the quality left something to be desired. Well, Rory got us both a much-smaller DivX-encoded .avi, and a nearly uncompressed version we were able to use to make a very nice QuickTime version. You'll find both new versions in the Movie Database listing for this flick. (There's no new content; if you're not interested in the higher-quality version, you should pass on this one.) Colorado Cash up for grabs
Dang, this came in Sunday night, but I forgot to post it. Front Range Company 7 (a Seventh Column Chapter) and Colorado Fusion, based in (you guessed it) Colorado, would like to announce 'Se7en', a no-elimination, 4-man team Halo tournament. The competition will be near Denver, CO on May 17, 2003. Registration is $120/team, and top prize is $1000. Check out the details on the Se7en page! (Louis Wu 08:39:12 UTC)

It's not cool to stockpile VX nerve gas.
Ross Mills points out that if you register on the Red vs Blue forums, you get access to otherwise unreleased RvB movies. At the moment, that means a Public Service Announcement... but in the future, it'll give you early access to unreleased episodes. (Louis Wu 13:14:00 UTC)

Halo Done Quick - Part 1
A month ago, a pair from Canada sent in times for speed runs through the various levels of Halo, performed on Easy. Yesterday, Åstro and his partner, Coreman (Team Poughkeepsie), sent word (and a pair of films) of their work on the first of 10 levels... performed on Legendary. Their run of Pillar of Autumn is just a hair faster than Hartley and Copeland's... on a much rougher difficulty setting. The gauntlet, thrown down 4 months ago, now has some content behind it. The movie of this feat, which includes everything from the time the Bungie logo leaves the screen through the Level 2 loading screen, is available in both QuickTime and Windows Media Player 9 formats (25.6 and 18.6 mb, respectively) from Mythica.org, and both versions have been mirrored on the Psyjnir.com Hotline server. (We are happy, of course, to announce mirrors - just let us know if you put these up.) (Louis Wu 21:48:09 UTC)

Halo chosen for the WCG 2003 Tournament
Interesting. The World Cyber Games Organizing Committee has announced two titles to represent console games in the WCG 2003 Tourney: Halo and SSX Tricky. This rounds out the total list of 8 games to be played at this year's contest. To be chosen to represent consoles in a traditionally PC-oriented competition is a notable honor; moreso because the category (first-person shooters) is one that many PC gamers feel consoles will NEVER perform well in. Thanks to kappa for the heads-up. poena.dare couldn't be reached for comment - his handler mentioned something about handcuffs... and a tennis ball. (Louis Wu 22:41:21 UTC)

Brian Morden will now frogblast the ventcore

It is with a heavy heart that we here at BORG announce that Brian Morden, aka Ar-Isildur, died at 5:55AM. He was 19 years old. His younger brother, Jamin, posted a note on our forum telling us the sad news. Please reply with good thoughts.

I and a few others have actually met Brian in person, and I feel privileged to have been in the company of someone that was both a lover and a fighter. Brian shocked his doctors by fighting the cancer that was eating through his body to the bitter end. Yet through out it all, his love for his friends and family never faltered, and we never failed to give it right back to him.

You didn't have to meet him in person to see what a great guy he is. Just do a search through the forum's archive for his posts. You will see that we have lost a warm and decent human being.

For the man that popularized "<3", it is only fitting that he stayed with his family and friends through Valentine's Day. Brian was no fool.

There will be more from us here at BORG. Count on it.

- Miguel

The Pillar of Art
bungie.org is proud to announce its first-ever Art Contest. The Pillar of Art will reward artists who work in traditional media - no digital art allowed! Prizes include cold, hard cash and some super-cool stuff from Bungie. Read the details on the Pillar of Art page! (Before going in, don't forget to admire the front artwork, done by Ian McConville, of MacHall fame.) (Louis Wu 19:52:13 UTC)

Hide and Sleep
Warbow's Hide and Seek game, Round 3, is finally over. (It started on January 8.) Watch the short movie referenced in his announcement, and you'll understand why it took so long to solve the last image... (He's tired, it'll be a while before round 4.) Congrats, c0ld vengeance - a clean sweep of all five images! (Louis Wu 21:00:53 UTC)

Cover Art Contestants posted
A week ago, c0ld vengeance threw down a gauntlet: create a better cover for Halo 2 than, say, EB Games. We've received 9 entries for this competition; 7 show just the front cover, two show front and back. We've posted all 9 on a display page. c0ld vengeance will judge these and announce a winner soon. Update: There was one more entry - apparently, it had been sent to c0ld a couple of days ago, but it never made its way here. It's been added now. (Louis Wu 20:34:06 UTC)

The Fan Music Prototype?
Griffon pointed out that he announced a piece of Halo fan music more than two years ago. (As far as I can tell, this is the FIRST piece of Halo fan music - I'm sorry it's remained buried until now.) You can grab a copy (3.2 mb, mp3 format) from mythica. (Louis Wu 17:00:51 UTC)

Phoenix-inspired artwork
Since the announcement that Bungie's secret project known as Phoenix has been shelved, the artwork has begun to pour in. We started by placing it in our Miscellaneous Art section... but it's clear that it has the potential to crush that section, and it's not particularly Halo-related. We've therefore added new additions (as well as recently submitted pieces that are already in our Misc. Art section) to phoenix.bungie.org... and will continue to add new pieces there as they're submitted. Minimalist interface; the art is the thing. Hope this works for everyone! Soundtracks claimed
Last week, we mentioned a contest over at Psyjnir.com - guess the winner of the Halo National Tournament, win one of three Halo soundtracks. The contest ended a couple of days ago - but the announcement was made on the Psyjnir Complex 7th Column chapter, and was visible only to members of that chapter. This has been rectified - you can find the details on the main Psyjnir Complex website. Congrats to Forerunner01, masterchief1138, and Jerry H! (Louis Wu 00:47:45 UTC)
