If there's something you want to know from Bungie, and it's NOT about stuff they haven't announced yet, visit the thread, toss your question into the hat. You might just get it answered in tomorrow's Weekly Update. Update: You're certainly welcome to keep posting questions, but realize that Frankie's only gonna answer about 5 of 'em, and he almost certainly stopped reading several hours ago. That's not to say that other READERS might not have some answers for you... but you're not gonna make it into the Weekly Update any more. (Louis Wu 20:52:59 UTC)
January 29, 2006 Link to this post The left hand, and the right hand... I'm posting this because I'm positive our mailbox will be flooded with references to it if I don't... but the standard disclaimers apply. Joystiq has put up a note about some videos available on Microsoft's online training site for retail employees, discussing the roadmap for promotion of the Xbox 360 over the next three years. One of the discussions between MS VP Bill Brownell and others involves "fending off Sony and "those other guys" with Halo 3 in year two" - so while Halo 3 has still not been announced by Bungie as being in development, MS brass are telling retailers that it will be out in 'year two' (which means anytime between November 2006 and November 2007). Our stance is the same as it's always been - until BUNGIE says it's coming, it's a rumor. Period. (Louis Wu 17:15:08 UTC)
January 27, 2006 Link to this post TXB Wants Halo 3 TeamXbox has a 'Most Wanted Unannounced Xbox 360 Games' article up... and of course, Halo 3 is mentioned. Take their 'What We Know' info with a grain of salt. (Louis Wu 17:17:09 UTC)
January 13, 2006 Link to this post Killer Grunts - Win a copy of DOA4 We're proud to announce the first in a series of bungie.org/Bungie.net contests - Killer Grunts. (Bungie.net is involved only in the sense that they're providing the goodies you can win - so don't bug 'em if you're unhappy with the situation. Blame us.) The contest is simple: put together some box art for a (fictional) Halo-related fighting game, submit it, and wait for the Halo community to tell you how much it rocks. More details, as though you'd actually need them, can be found on the official Killer Grunts Contest Page. We're going to do our best to give you lots of chances to win cool stuff like this in the upcoming weeks and months - so stick around! (Louis Wu 17:45:57 UTC)
January 11, 2006 Link to this post A different take Heh - Peter Moore talked to Computer and Video Games a couple of days ago, and discussed the next installment of Halo as though MS was actually holding it back on purpose. Reading his words, one might almost get the idea that the decision NOT to release Halo 3 as a launch title for the Xbox360 was made not so much because it wasn't done, but because they wanted the 360 to be able to stand on its own, and not be 'a Halo box'. How convenient, then, that Halo 3 isn't actually ready for release (or, in fact, even announced as in production)! Thanks, voregaffer. (Louis Wu 11:41:28 UTC)
January 10, 2006 Link to this post A tired chestnut. I really wanted to pass on this - but there are literally dozens of emails in our mailboxes (yes, boxes, plural - folks are mailing this to every address they can find, which is a lot of addresses), so I'm posting it to make people STOP WRITING - Engadget interviewed Bill Gates at CES this year, and he was asked about the release of Halo 3. His answer: No, I have to make sure that any speculation I did about that is -- it's up to the team when they want to ship that, and they're going to take their time to make that a super great product. So even we don't know when that will come out. That's one of many games that are just phenomenal that are in the works, but it's up to the artists to do it when they feel good about it. For folks who are really excited about this stuff, let me clarify a couple of things for you - the fact that he says it's one of many 'phenomenal' games does not mean he's played it, and thinks it's phenomenal - it means he knows how important the Halo franchise is to the Xbox(es). And this is not an official announcement that Bungie is working on Halo 3. There. It's posted news, you can read it, you can point it out to your friends. Can you stop telling us about it now? Thanks! (Louis Wu 15:25:07 UTC)
January 9, 2006 Link to this post Upcoming Machinima Contest Feenix writes again - with news of an upcoming machinima contest. Full details will be announced soon, but for now, the basic gist is that winners will be included on upcoming cover DVDs for Xbox World 360, and an overall winner will earn a free game. The rules are simple: the machinima has to be made with an Xbox game, it must be at least 640x480 resolution, and it cannot contain any copyrighted music. Existing pieces (that is, machinima creations that have already been released on the net) are acceptable. Use this announcement to get started on making something new - or to polish up something you've already released! (Louis Wu 18:12:25 UTC)
December 31, 2005 Link to this post Money for Montages (and chicks for free) Eep - I meant to post this yesterday, but it got lost in the pre-New Years Eve-planning. Z, over at halo2forum.com, announced a new montage contest a couple of days ago - and this one has what none have had before: cash prizes for the winners. There's a thousand dollars on the line; at least half of that, and maybe more, will go to the first-place winner, thanks to a sponsor... so if you're into making Halo 2 montages, you might wanna go check out the h2f thread. The submission deadline is several months off, so you've got time to collect good gameplay clips. (Louis Wu 13:31:49 UTC)
December 31, 2005 Link to this post Northeast Tourneys A couple of tournaments were announced on our forum yesterday - there's a 2v2/4v4 Halo 2 event in Pittsburgh, PA, on Sunday January 8 (forum post was here, with a tourney flyer here), and a Halo 1 event in Groton, CT, on Saturday January 7, with details in this post. Next weekend looks to be busy in the Northeast!
December 28, 2005 Link to this post Stubbs Contest Update DOH! I missed the end of the contest - but better late than never, right? A couple of weeks ago, we mentioned a contest at Polymallet.com, home of Christ Hughes, who worked for Bungie and then Wideload. A couple of days ago, The Battle Cat, over at Wideloadgames dot org, announced that a winner had surfaced - and explained what was found, and what it meant. Congrats, Edward Duff! (While you're there, follow the link in the second news post to the Stubbs the Zombie video holiday card at Animation Farm - it's pretty funny!) (Louis Wu 13:32:28 UTC)
December 23, 2005 Link to this post That stupid sign... again. Bah. Sometimes the big sites are just... clueless. Back in early November, we posted a note about a poster that a local FYE in Arlington, VA had put up, touting Halo 3 (which, you might remember, hasn't been announced yet). The forum thread generated by that picture shows how the image is a poorly-done photoshop job, and NOT something a real Halo 3 campaign would use. Since then, we've had many reports on our forum of that sign showing up in other stores around the US. Well, today, it FINALLY got noticed by bigger sites (whee, only two months late!) - Spong suggests that the poster means that Halo 3 should be on sale soon (thanks, Marc Friedrichs), and ItPlays.net says the sign is proof that retailers are capitalizing on the almost-certain release of Halo 3 in 2006 (thanks, Mike Moore). Folks - while it's definitely true that some retailers are trying to make an early buck on what is probably the most eagerly-awaited Xbox360 title out there... the fact that someone hacked together a sign so they could do this does NOT say anything at all about the game - when it's coming, IF it's coming... anything. (And the only reason this is news is because the big boys are willing to take stuff like this at face value.) (Louis Wu 13:39:11 UTC)
December 20, 2005 Link to this post Ohio Tourney in January zerosignal wanted people to know about a double elimination Halo tourney that will take place at the Bottom Line Bar and Grille in Austintown, OH on January 28th - no word on entry fees, prizes, or directions. If you're interested, I guess you should email him. Update: Looks like another one was announced on our forum last night - 4v4 on an upcoming (so far undetermined) Saturday, in Lititz, PA. Entry is $100/team, top prize is $1000. More details in the forum post. Update 2: And another one, in Groton CT, January 7. $10-$20/person, depending on type of competition, prizes based on participation. Go read! (Louis Wu 13:57:07 UTC)
December 9, 2005 Link to this post Jiggly Spartans and Action Sacks Heh. In the midst of a thread that wondered whether Team Ninja had gotten access to either the Halo movie script or a script for Halo 3, Frankie managed to both shut down speculation about what a particular passage meant (the material Team Ninja worked with to put Nicole together was created specifically for them by Bungie) and announce a new Halo Humpday Challenge writeup on Bungie.net (Bungie won, for the first time in a long time). Not too shabby! Read the thread, read the writeup. Feed the people. Stay alive. (Louis Wu 03:55:34 UTC)
December 5, 2005 Link to this post When there's no news, make it up. Wow. GamesRadar has one of the more bizarre 'news' articles I've seen in a while; they're suggesting that Halo 3 (a title that hasn't even been announced yet) might come on 4 double-layer DVDs. Where does this come from? Well, apparently someone is claiming that "one particular 'highly anticipated' Xbox 360 title is currently taking up four 9GB DVDs"... and, in GameRadar's words, "nothing is more anticipated than the next Halo." (Who is this someone? Heh. Your guess is as good as mine.) Wow... what a stretch. Thanks to Cybrfrk and ZiplocBodybag for pointing this silliness out. (Louis Wu 17:48:26 UTC)
December 4, 2005 Link to this post Biography: Master Chief NFL246 (who goes by Wronchi on Newgrounds) has posted a parody of the Master Chief's life in Flash format over there. It's pretty long (more than 10 minutes), but has some funny moments. Although he announced it on our forum, he was beaten to the punch by spartan erik, who noticed it 9 hours earlier. (Louis Wu 15:20:20 UTC)
November 26, 2005 Link to this post Halo Trading Cards UNSCDF points out some Halo Trading Cards being created by Zertuche and friends - you can find them on the original site (it's Freewebs, so it's likely going to be down after this announcement) or on UNSCDF's site. (Louis Wu 13:50:41 UTC)
November 25, 2005 Link to this post Rise of the Elites Episode 2 This seems to be a movie day - I guess you should settle in for some real watching. Next up is a movie that was announced at High Impact Halo a week
ago; some folks loved it, some didn't. 'Rise of the Elites Episode 2' was submitted to the MPRRS, and failed - by the slimmest of margins. Those reviewers have been failing EVERYTHING lately, though, so I'm inclined to cut the film a little slack... I grabbed a copy and watched. It's quite long (nearly 20 minutes), and an awful lot of work has been put into it. Cinematography is quite good. The plot is a little weak, and a few parts are slow... but overall, it's well done, and worth watching. (Although some reviewers didn't like the fact that all voices were done by the same person, I have to say that the voices are understandable and clear, which forgives a LOT of sins.) WMP9 version is 45.2 mb, QuickTime version is 44.1 mb. Get out the popcorn! (Louis Wu 15:43:09 UTC)
November 24, 2005 Link to this post Movie-theater-based tourney in Ohio Another Halo tourney to be played out on a movie screen is happening in Ohio this Saturday - XKade will host a Halo 2 tourney at the Tiffin Mall in Tiffin, OH. $50 per person, prizes to be announced. More info is in the link. (Louis Wu 13:43:24 UTC)
November 16, 2005 Link to this post Hell Quarters: Jonathan Quail Crossfire submitted Hell Quarters: Jonathan Quail to the MPRRS a couple of days ago - the reviewers loved it. (This version uses subtitles, because of a technical glitch during the creation - he's hoping to submit a new version with voice acting once the problem is solved, and if he does, we'll simply swap it in for these versions.) It's an interesting, dark look at traumatic stress, nicely filmed. (This movie was announced at High Impact Halo last weekend, as well - I'm actually using the hi-res link from that thread instead of the medium-res release submitted to the MPRRS.) 7 minutes long, 72.4 mb in WMP9 format, 75 mb in QuickTime format. Go watch! (Louis Wu 16:55:30 UTC)
November 9, 2005 Link to this post The Pumpkins Are Picked. Thanks for all your voting - the 2005 Guilt O' Lantern Pumpkin Carving Contest, voting phase, is now over. We'll tally the votes of almost 6000 people later today, and announce the three top winners! (Louis Wu 13:32:20 UTC)
November 9, 2005 Link to this post Buy your own copy! We just don't know when. Chappy found a pretty funny poster at his local FYE - they're advertising the presale of a game that hasn't even been announced yet. (Check out a blowup of the critical piece - they didn't even bother to make the effort to blend the central area.) This is news not because someone's trying to make a buck off this game (Gamestop and EB Games have had placeholder webpages up for it for months), but because someone actually went to the effort of creating a poster. Silliness. (Louis Wu 13:12:47 UTC)
November 5, 2005 Link to this post Xbox360: Dreamcast 2.0? 1Up has an article comparing (and contrasting) the Dreamcast and the Xbox360 - amazing similarities, in some cases. The differences are where 1Up thinks Xbox360 will get over the hump the Dreamcast never cleared - and one of the biggest is Halo (both older versions, and 'Halo 3' - yeah, we know it's not announced yet). Thanks, DHalo. (Louis Wu 20:47:33 UTC)
October 27, 2005 Link to this post Spartan 458 - Officially Tempus Fugit pointed out an article at TeamXbox - Tecmo and Bungie formally announced the inclusion of Spartan 458 in Dead or Alive 4. (Yeah, we've all seen screenshots... but, well... Frankie put it best in this post.) (Louis Wu 02:36:05 UTC)
October 26, 2005 Link to this post Stubbs in Europe... in 2006. Ouch. Stubbs the Zombie has been released for Xbox - at least the NTSC version. And the PC and Mac versions are coming next month. However, if you live in a PAL country... you've got a little wait ahead of you. THQ just announced that they'll be bringing the PAL version to the world... and that the UK version will be released in February. (They say that the PC version will be coming in February, as well... but I'm not sure I understand why that would need to be delayed...) Thanks, eddie m. (Louis Wu 03:23:53 UTC)
October 24, 2005 Link to this post Rockets on Prisoner 2005 - All Winners The Rockets on Prisoner 2005 Awards are nearly done - all of the winners have now been announced (you can find the full list on the RoP website, and at some point, an enormous (1 hour, 22 minutes) video containing the entire ceremony will be up. Congrats to all the winners! (Louis Wu 10:25:17 UTC)
