Rooster Teeth to perform at Machinima Europe
Hugh Hancock points out that Rooster Teeth will be performing live at the Machinima Europe festival, on Saturday, October 13 (this coming Saturday); according to Burnie, the plan is "to make a hilarious special video for the programme using our world-famous, award-winning Red vs Blue characters and our trademark humility." If you haven't registered, and would like to, visit the bookings page! (Louis Wu 13:34:14 UTC)

RvB on CNN
Biggest number of emails in the last twelve hours is about a story on CNN.com (it was on the front page last night, according to Shadowsniper689, but it's not, any more) - it's a two-minute video clip about the guys behind Red vs Blue, and how they got into using Halo to make machinima. Go watch! (Louis Wu 11:42:07 UTC)

Dust to Dust Trailer
Yesterday, siliconmaster482 stopped by our forum to point out a machinima project being built in 3ds max - it's called Dust to Dust, and they've released a trailer. I liked it; it's quite simple, but the work is quite good. We're helping with hosting - there are three WMP9 versions listed in his forum post, and we're mirroring those... plus we've got three corresponding QuickTime versions.

High Res (1024x720): WMP9 (32.3 mb) | QuickTime (27.8 mb)
Medium Res (640x480): WMP9 (11.6 mb) | QuickTime (10.8 mb)
Low Res (320x240): WMP9 (4.3 mb) | QuickTime (4.4 mb)
Go watch, and see if you agree that this project has serious potential! They're looking for folks who'd like to help build sets in 3ds max, as well as anyone able to render the final films; these are their two biggest bottlenecks at the moment. siliconmaster482's email is in the forum post, if you'd like to join the team. Machinima Licenses, Revisited
Wired takes another look at the Game Content Usage Rules Microsoft published a couple of months ago - not a lot new, but it does a nice job of comparing the situation facing Halo machinima creators with that of creators in the Blizzard camp. Thanks, Xavier Guerrero. (Louis Wu 14:25:13 UTC)

More Machinima Stuff
Yesterday, we described what you need to do in order to lower your weapon in Halo 3. We got a note from Burnie, over at Red vs Blue, with some followup info; a similar combo (swapping only DPad-Down for DPad-Up) will give you camera global coordinates and look vectors; this info should help you reproduce a specific camera position for advanced shots. For folks who don't know what they'd be getting, here are three screenshots: normal | no weapon | camera coordinates. (Louis Wu 14:27:50 UTC)

Machinima Makers - Read This
Okay, so I've got good news and bad news for you, if you make Halo machinima, and you want to know how to put your weapon down. The good news is, we've got that info for you, thanks to madmax. The bad news? It only works locally or in system link - it will NOT work over Live. Sorry. So: here's the trick (and it really is a trick, you need a lot of fingers): hold down both bumpers, both sticks, A and DPad-Down for 3 seconds. (Three fingers per hand should do it.) To bring the gun back up, just pull a trigger. And oh, yeah - this works in both Multiplayer... AND Campaign. Update: Chris Burke, from This Spartan Life, sent in a correction - you don't actually need to hold down the right stick. The other 5 buttons do the trick. (Louis Wu 19:41:03 UTC)

Classical Halo, in Sweden
Wow, this is pretty cool. If you visit this website, you'll see movies and photos of the Royal Swedish Ballet practicing for an interpretive dance on September 26, at the Berwaldhallen concert hall in Stockholm, Sweden. The Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra will be playing Halo music, and Halo machinima will be shown. Pretty amazing looking stuff! Thanks to Anton P. Nym, who found it at Kotaku. Threshold Part 2
Halopen has chosen this weekend to release Threshold Part 2, a new machinima. They're very excited about it - so much so that they really want me to post a description of the movie that they wrote. We don't usually do this, but I'll make an exception this time:

A lone general known as Hypnos, endeavors to win the war against the humans. But there is one thing stopping him from achieving victory, himself. His dark side has gotten to know him more than he knew himself, and this has become a problem for Hypnos and his army. Can he fight through his insanity and continue to live or will he confront his demon and destroy it?

Finding the video is actually non-trivial - but if you click on the picture that makes up the top news post on their website, you'll be taken to a Mythica page where you can download it. WMP9 format, 16 minutes long, 87 mb. Thanks, xbryboyremix. (Louis Wu 17:50:04 UTC)

The Riot 64
It's Sunday, so it must be time for another episode of The Riot - swing by Second Foundation to see. 35 minutes, 14 mb, this one's focused on machinima (and music). Thanks, Sigafoos. (Louis Wu 19:41:12 UTC)

Last shot at Machinima Europe
If you've made a Machinima film in the last year or so, and haven't submitted it to Machinima Europe, this is your last chance! All you need to do is fill out a form and give them a URL - that's it! No cash, no hard copy - you can work out trailers and stuff later. Get your work in there! The deadline's tomorrow, the 8th. (Louis Wu 12:51:50 UTC)

Trinity Trailer
The Praetoria Guard has released a trailer for Trinity, an upcoming machinima series. There is, in fact, an entire website devoted to the series. Swing by, read about it, and then download the trailer from the Downloads page - I have to say, it looks promising! (Louis Wu 16:01:58 UTC)

Elnea - a woman of many talents
A week ago, Elnea sent along a bunch of artwork that had been created since the last update of her gallery here. Somehow, I forgot to get it posted. Which turned out fine... because very recently she added a finished version of a piece she's been working on for a little while - along with a very cool song. First, the artwork: there's a poster of OboeCrazy's guest appearance on JengaJam, a poster she created for the now-defunct machinima Silver Stars/Purple Hearts, a great collage of her Spartan Barbie action figure, the Cortana portion of her most recent creation, and the final Cortana/MC work that was created to accompany 'Not Just a Voice', her latest piece of Halo music. (We're mirroring the song, as well, just in case.) Go look at all the pretty pictures, and be disturbed by the images created by the song! (Louis Wu 02:24:38 UTC)

Machinima Festival Europe 07 - it's not too late!
Are you a machinima maker with content near completion (or completed)? Hugh Hancock's discussion of the Game Content Rules mentioned, almost incidentally, Machinima Festival Europe 07, taking place in Leicester, UK in mid-October. The deadline for submissions is TOMORROW - but if you can make that deadline, and your work meets the submission guidelines, you should think seriously about entering. Update: Hugh Hancock points out that the deadline's been extended until the 8th - so you have more than a week. GET CRACKING! (Louis Wu 19:17:08 UTC)

Content Rules, Machinima, and More
Hugh Hancock wrote up the full discussion of his conference call with Microsoft about the Game Content Usage Rules we mentioned yesterday. He mentions Halo specifically, puts forth some very common-sense arguments to some of the overreactions that hit the net soon after the Rules did, and even manages to squeeze in an xkcd reference. You can't do better than that. (He also suggests you read an article written by Fred von Lohmann, of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, on this subject - he was also in on this conference call, and, unlike Hugh, IS a lawyer. Fred's article is pretty positive as well.) Bottom line from yesterday ("Don't Worry, Be Happy") still stands. As long you're not making "Cortana does Cleveland" or something... More on the Content Rules
Nitro288 stopped by to point out a blog post from DonkeyXote, otherwise known as Don McGowan, a Microsoft attorney who wrote up (helped write up?) the Game Content Usage Rules. (He was one of the guys who spoke to Hugh Hancock yesterday - here's his note about the call.) Again, it sounds like the gloom-and-doom predictions of the Halo machinima community, made right after the Content Rules were first posted, might have been a little premature. We'll keep an eye on this. (Louis Wu 12:53:20 UTC)

Machinima - It's Not Dead, Yet
Hugh Hancock has been in the pantheon of machinima gods for as long as there's BEEN a pantheon. (Wait... IS there a pantheon?) Don't worry about it - Hugh's been around since the beginning, and he's looking out for machinima makers. He just got off a conference call with some Microsoft folks about the recently released Game Content Usage Rules, and he's summarized what he learned in a blog post at Machinima for Dummies. There's a full writeup coming soon - but the take-home message is 'Don't Worry, Be Happy'. Things are way better than they might have seemed a couple of weeks ago. (Louis Wu 19:31:38 UTC)

RvB thoughts
Computerworld has a look back on Rooster Teeth's effect on machinima, triggered by the fact that the Season Five DVD is now available (my preordered copy arrived last week) - go read, then (if you don't already have it) go buy! (Louis Wu 09:58:54 UTC)

Opus Machinima
Andras Ostrom has sent along a new, and MASSIVE, piece of Halo machinima; it's 30 minutes long, and weighs in at about 200 mb, depending on format. It's called 'Opus Machinima', and it pokes fun at... well, the entire genre. It's really nicely filmed, has great voice acting, and contains quite a few funny moments - if you've got the bandwidth, it's worth the download. You can grab it in either QuickTime or WMP9 formats; we can, again, spread this out over multiple servers if the bandwidth gets tight. Update: The film has its own website - take a look. (Louis Wu 16:01:34 UTC)

Did you know games have laws?
ClassyDude put up a podcast which had Laird and RvB community member Dark54555 discussing the new Microsoft Game Content Rules, and how they affect Halo machinima. You can find it on this page - you're looking for Episode 2 (it's down near the bottom). (Louis Wu 11:48:41 UTC)

kill.switch
Jamie98s has put up a lot of machinima over the years. We've got a new one for you - it's a monster. It's called "kill.switch", and it reproduces the plotline (and gets all of its audio from) the Namco Bandai game of the same name. It works very well in the Halo engine, actually. Jamie's description:

A war-crazed maniac captures Bishop, a supersoldier. He implants a neurolink in his head that gives control of his body to a third party. Archer (the war-crazed maniac) aims to create wars in every country he can, then sell the supersoldier technology to each country to make billions of dollars. But when an old friend hacks into the neurolink things dont go as planned for Archer.

This video is 26 minutes long. You can grab it in WMP9 format (168 mb) or QuickTime format (161 mb) - if you have trouble with the download, let us know and I'll spread the load over more servers. Update: trigger119 has mirrored the WMP9, and self-encoded a QuickTime version using H.264, over at GamingTV. Grab 'em there if you have trouble with our links. (Louis Wu 22:30:21 UTC)

The Invasion Trailer Contest
Adam Kovic let us know that Machinima.com is running another contest - this one requires that you put together a machinima version of the official "Invasion" movie trailer using supplied audio and graphics, mixed with your own game footage. As of right now, there are two submissions (one using the Sims, the other using modeled footage) - the field's wide open, and the grand prize is a cool $1000. You've got until September 3 - get cracking! Halo seems like a perfect vehicle. (Louis Wu 21:33:56 UTC)
