Tunnelvision - WAN Gaming
PrAy4U writes to let us know about a national Halo 2 event on November 19 to be held at gaming centers around the US, using custom tournament system link software to link centers together - currently 9 states are involved. The technology is called Tunnelvision - looks pretty cool! Swing by and see if you can join in! (Louis Wu 18:36:27 UTC)

A week and a half's worth of Podtacular
Wow. Looks like since they stopped telling us about them, we've completely missed the last few Podtacular podcasts. We mentioned Episode 12 on October 10... since then, they've released Episode 13 (Grenade Power and Burial Mounds), Episode 14 (Customs and Call-Ins), Episode 15 (high-quality update), Episode 16 (Coag and Combos), and Episode 17 (Customs and Call-Ins). Go catch up! (Louis Wu 13:45:13 UTC)

New Vids at H2F
A couple of new vids over at Halo2Forums - ReMoRs3 created a vid using Dest's Halo 2 Custom Edition mod - it shows Halo-style weapons on Halo 2's Lockout. It's just ReMoRs3 running around - there's nobody to shoot - so you can't get a great sense for damage adjustments... but you can see the battle rifle turned into an assault rifle, and grenade triggers shifted back towards how they were in Halo. 29.4 mb, WMP9 format. There's also a high-res version of Clan Hops Episode 3 (lower-res versions were posted over at HIH a couple of days ago) - some great jumps. 61.2 mb, WMP9 format. Check 'em out! MLG PwnCast - a new Halo 2 podcast
A new Halo 2 podcast popped up yesterday; the Unofficial MLG PwnCast aims to help folks play Halo 2 better than they did before, and caters specifically to the MLG Customs community. The first episode is three and a half minutes long, weighs in at 4 mb, and introduces the ideas behind the show. Go listen! (Louis Wu 09:57:18 UTC)

Redeye Reduction Already Applied.
And speaking of our favorite pun-ter, Stuntmutt has been spotlighted over at The Junkyard; go read what makes him tick. There's even a custom strip, made just for the occasion. Thanks, Mhaddy. (Louis Wu 16:51:43 UTC)

Red vs Blue vs Green
Over at Halo Babies, the winning strip in their recent 'Red vs Blue' contest has been released as this week's normal comic. Nrek did the writing, Gruntsbane did the artwork. Knowledge of a popular custom gametype in Halo 2 multiplayer is necessary to get the joke. (Cute stuff!) (Louis Wu 07:22:44 UTC)

How to make cutscenes in HaloCE
DHalo made a tutorial to help with basic cutscene making with scripts, using Halo Custom Edition - you can find a download link in this Gearbox forum thread. (The video is encoded using a Mac-incompatible codec; you'll need a PC to watch this. On the other hand, you'll need a PC to use HaloCE, so it's not such a big deal.) (Louis Wu 13:21:53 UTC)

Podtacular Ep 5
Podtacular! has posted Episode 5 of their Halo 2 podcast - Warlock and custom gametypes head the topics of this hour and a half audio blog. Thanks, Kaizer Bun. (Louis Wu 15:10:37 UTC)

Perfect cutscene - in HaloCE
The HaloCE community continues advancing the product - Wave of Lag points out a thread on the Gearbox forum where The Ghost demos the first cutscene in the Maw, completely rendered in HaloCE. (HaloCE was released as multiplayer-only; there was no explicit support for campaign play. That didn't stop these guys, though.) Looks like custom single-player maps aren't that far off! I'm not sure if 'snow' is the right modifier...
There's a writeup of a custom gametype called 'Snowball' over at Geezer Gamers; it's a little like Zombies, but not really. The thing that makes it... well, odd is the requirement of teabagging your opponent. (You have to.) It's a funny writeup for a somewhat unique gametype - go check it out! (Thanks again, 3Suns.) Temp bans for modders' friends
There's another piece on Bungie.net that should be read by everyone who plays Halo 2 on Xbox Live; apparently, the've started to run queries on their game database, looking not for modders, but for players who've played 'a significant number of games with modders'. Yesterday, they temp-banned a few thousand of them - and the next time won't be temporary. This doesn't mean you should panic if you find yourself in a game with a modder; one is not a 'significant number of games'. It DOES mean that if you're doing a lot of custom gaming, and your friends are modders... you might find yourself banned, even though you don't mod. Worth thinking about! Update: Sketchfactor dropped by our forum to clarify that the current tempban was only for people who were playing with modders in Matchmaking - not custom games. (There was some apprehension that you could get banned from matchmaking by inadvertently playing in custom games with modders.) He certainly did not rule out the possibility that playing with modders in custom games might, at some point, get you banned from matchmaking - but right now, they're focusing on matchmaking primarily. Zelda mod alpha available
Dennis Powers, of GearboxGameZone, writes to point out that Jahrain, the creator of the Zelda mod we've mentioned a few times (for Halo Custom Edition), has released a 'pre-alpha' version of a single level.

The map, Hyrule Field, features a Zelda biped instead of the Spartan and includes new weaponry in the Zelda theme, a working and mountable animated horse and a large interesting landscape. Although there are still some Halo style weapons and a large "bug list" this early release will give players a taste of what is to come.

You can grab a copy from GGZ. (Louis Wu 15:08:01 UTC)

Paintball, Halo Style
Occasionally, the subject of paintball guns comes up in our forum, and the Tippman Model 98 is held up as a classic. True Dark 1ES found a company called Engler Custom Paintball Guns that has taken this gun and modified it to look like something much more familiar to Halo fans. The page is broken, so actually ordering it might be difficult... but it's the last gun on the page. Scroll down to the bottom for a look - and if the price isn't totally out of range for you, you could try email; hit the 'BACK' link at the top of the page, then the 'Contact Us' link at the top of the resulting page. Update: looks like it was mentioned before - this was the earliest reference I could find. I must say, though, the new pics do it far more justice. Update, late 2008: Engler has completely changed its website; the original page we discussed in this post is still archived on the Wayback Machine, but in case the pictures eventually die, we've grabbed local copies (one | two). Map Pack - Fair Game
There's a great piece over at Bungie.net - apparently, the message that EB Games has been giving to Australian buyers of the Maptacular Map Pack (that they'll be banned if they go online with the new maps before the street date of next week) is false; you will NOT be banned. In Sketchfactor's words:

Bungie and the Live Team will not be taking any action against anyone who has these maps early, despite rumors that have been circulating the 'net.

You won't see the new maps in matchmaking playlists before Monday, July 11... but you're welcome to play custom games with your friends (provided they have the maps as well, of course) with no fear of bannage. W00t! (Louis Wu 16:54:55 UTC)

Aussie Halo Players get lucky - sort of
Wow - THIS is gonna cause problems, I can tell. Looks like EB Games Australia might have made a pretty big mistake; they're selling the Halo 2 Maptacular Map Pack NOW - you can buy the DVD in stores. (It's not supposed to be on sale before July 5.) However, they emailed customers with this info:

"...Customers will not be able to access live with this title before the 7th of July. If a customers tries to access live before the 7th of July there account will be disabled. We apologize for the late notice on this information but we have just been notified."

Ouch - how many Australian accounts do you think will get disabled by folks who didn't get (or didn't read) this email? Thanks to BeardedFerret, who wrote to us with the DVD in his hot little hands - and who is looking forward to some lan play with these maps in the next week. Update: I misunderstood BeardedFerret's first note; the email went only to EB Games stores in Australia, not to customers; it was information for store personnel only. (BeardedFerret works in an EB Games store, which is how he saw it.) His store won't be displaying the Map Pack on shelves before the 5th, and only selling it to people who ask for it - but he's guessing that this will NOT be the case in most stores. Buyer beware! Guide for MLG Beginners
Hehe - Vapor wrote up a short little guide for surviving in MLG Custom games (mostly for folks who can't). A couple of things I wouldn't have thought of in there (like the fact that even though it takes 4 bursts to the head to take out an opponent with a battle rifle, it STILL only takes 4 bursts if the first three hit the body; only the last needs to hit the head). Go read. (Louis Wu 14:53:03 UTC)

Halo Custom for Forza
Hehe - nice! 3Suns found a fun Forza custom car that's pretty Halo-related at Tabwin.com. At the moment, it's no the front page, 7th row (!!), first column... but if it moves, here's a direct link. That baby's probably pretty fast... (Louis Wu 22:50:14 UTC)

LibraryMP - for HaloCE
A few days ago, LightingXCE dropped by our forum to mention that he'd been working on recreating LibraryMP for Halo Custom Edition. (LibraryMP was an early modding effort by Monoxide which allowed multiplayer gameplay in Halo's Library. We mentioned it in January 2004, though the vid in the linked forum post no longer exists.) Well, according to this post on the Gearbox Forums (thanks, MasterGrief), the map has actually been released! Go grab a copy (link is in the first post), and give it a shot!
