The Unabomber... with crayons.
Red Vs Blue has posted a couple of Sponsor-only videos; you can't download them unless you're a sponsor (though you CAN comment on them - beauty of the new website). You'll find them linked off the Videos page. There's the intro video to the Penny Arcade Expo last summer, and a test vid in which part of Episode 35 has been refilmed using the Halo 2 engine. Fun stuff! Ross Mills pointed this out. (Louis Wu 21:35:33 UTC)

Da Funnies
Online comics - there are a few.

  • Ross Mills pointed out Blue Screen of Life, a five-page comic based loosely on the lives of the Uni students he lives with. (He didn't draw it, but he IS in it.) The first two pages are pretty devoid of Halo content.
  • w00tness has put up 3 new strips since we last checked in (first is here) - looks like the Covenant might have met its match.
  • VG Cats has a new Halo-related strip up today - it's a quick guide to Halo 2, and... well, go read it. (Thanks, Trunks.)

HaloPC 1.06 Update (not automatic)
Bungie has released the 1.06 update for HaloPC, which fixes a rare but nasty bug; the auto-updater won't work for this, so visit the web page and follow the instructions. (There is also a download for the 1.06 Dedicated Server.) Ross Mills was first out of the gate with this. (Louis Wu 03:18:33 UTC)

More on the Battle Guide
A few weeks ago, Ross Mills found a 'Halo 2 Battle Guide' on Amazon UK. There was almost no information. There's now a cover photo and a synopsis - apparently, it will teach you not just to get through the room, but to be a better gamer. Still no word on when it will actually be released ('December' is as specific as it gets). (Louis Wu 15:00:23 UTC)

Halo press around the net
First off, let me get some of the press out of the way. There's a LOT of it. (Surprise, surprise.) I've broken things into categories; I'm sure there's stuff I missed, and I'm also sure that some things are duplicated (many articles are syndicated, and picked up by other sites; occasionally, they're not properly marked, and I miss a dupe... live with it). There are hundreds of articles I DIDN'T include - I'm not sure how many more of these I'm willing to do, so the day might come when we just have to say 'everyone's writing about this' and be done with it. Also, the order is somewhat random - it's the order things came in to me. This SHOULD help make the list more palatable, actually - you won't be reading the same thing over and over again. Anyway, on to the articles:

Writeups of launch events

Reviews

  • Gamereactor (Norway, this time - 10/10, contains spoilers; thanks, Victor)
  • Lawrence.com - 90% (This score was heavily weighted towards campaign - mp would have received a 100%)

Articles

Big sites

Comics:

If this isn't enough for you, there's a ton more over at HaloPlanet (thanks, Rams).

Can you read this much news?
There are dozens upon dozens of Halo 2-related stories out there today - here's a sampling:

I tried (with the exception of the New York Times, which SHOULD be an exception) to stay away from articles that required registration to read. There are also new reviews:

  • X-Plays (5/5 - thanks, Frensa Geran)
  • ETBGaming (10/10 - thanks, Anthony Manley)
  • Gamereactor (Swedish, this time; 10/10, thanks again, Victor - and again, beware of spoilers)
  • Update: The BBC gave Halo 2 a 9.5 - nice! Thanks, Stephen Smith

And, of course, comics:

  • Crtl+Alt+Delete (Lothar Hex was first
  • Penny Arcade (thanks, Ross Mills - who also was unhappy by the 'spoiler content' in the attached news article - though I'd suggest that it's only a spoiler if you think it is; you STILL don't know anything)

Whew! That's a lot of news to get through in one shot. (Louis Wu 14:18:41 UTC)

More Nile Rogers at Gamespy
Gamespy extended their interview with Nile Rogers (the first part was listed Friday - you can read the new material starting on this page. It's all about what differentiates Halo's music - specifically the popular-band-generated music - from other video games. Good read. Of the dozen people who sent this in, Ross Mills was first. The British - they're subtle, you know.
Stuntmutt and Ross Mills have both reported in with word of a new ad campaign in the UK - Stuntmutt heard a radio ad that was truly subtle:

10 sec if I'm any judge - it was the Halo monks chanting the theme. Then a deep, old man's voice says "from November 11th, work won't matter any more." No other branding.

(Classy!) If we can get copies of these (and permission to host them), we will. Likewise, Ross saw Halo 2 posters up around a college campus in southern England with the tagline "Come November 11th, Lectures won't matter any more." These are my kind of ads! Update: Ross tells us it was Tiana Whatley who actually found the posters. (Louis Wu 16:06:06 UTC)

Preorder leaflets showing up
Ross Mills sent in scans of a Halo 2 leaflet he noticed in multiple stores (front and back) - they're clearly direct from Microsoft, but it seems a tad late to me for folks to be BEGINNING to collect preorders... Nice pic on the front. Update: Sorry, I didn't make it clear - this is from the UK - the November 11 release date is not a typo, that's just what the Europeans have to live with. Visiting Old Friends
If you're a registered member (free) of RedvsBlue.com, you can grab Episode 40 from their forum. 7:22 long, ranging from 31 to 48 mb, depending on version. I gotta say... it's gettin' weird. Thanks to Ross Mills for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 13:07:48 UTC)

A beta tester writes a book
Speaking of books... Ross Mills ran across a curious entry at Amazon UK. It's a book entitled "The Halo 2 Battle Guide: Advanced Combat Techniques", and purports to be written by 'an experienced Halo 2 Beta tester', chock-full of multiplayer tips. Publication date is December 17. As far as I can tell, it is not offered by Amazon in the US. (Louis Wu 00:15:22 UTC)

The calendar that never was
Ross Mills found a listing on Amazon.com for a Halo 2 Wall Calendar for 2005... except that it's not available. Huh? (Details list a publication date of July 1, 2004. Bravardo (the publisher) doesn't seem to have a website.) Curious... Update: Mike Scott says the listed ISBN number is invalid - did this EVER exist? Update 2: Xenos found a page which states that this calendar was cancelled. Oh, well. (Louis Wu 12:58:45 UTC)

Et Tu, Stuntmutt?
Stuntmutt sent in a special Sunday strip for One One Se7en - it addresses one of the biggest points of contention on our forum right now. Warning - it's 200K large. Speaking of Stuntmutt, it seems he's been cheating on us; or at least, he's producing content for other sources, and not telling us. Bad Stuntmutt! He's got an entire blog going over at blogspot - it contains commentary, lost strips, and (most recently) some awfully cool work by Stunt and Tina Leyk. Seems they agreed to swap strips; you can see her offering to him, and his offering to her... both are great. On this lazy Sunday afternoon (I'm running on 5 hours of sleep in the last 60), this stuff is easy on the eyes. Update: Ross Mills points out that a picture of the new, leaked pic of a 'super-secret' action figure (search our forum if you don't know what this is about) is displayed on Stunt's blog. Since nobody has any clue whatsoever what this model is of, or whether, in fact, it even IS a character in Halo 2, I'd disagree STRONGLY that its presence on Stuntmutt's page is a spoiler in itself... but if you think that it is, I would suggest that you stop visiting this site completely for the next month or so. I will not be mentioning anything related to story spoilers at all, but items like this show where your opinion and mine diverge, so the only way to be sure you're not 'spoiled' is to simply stop visiting. Free poster with preorder in UK
Ross Mills notes that 'Game' stores in the UK have a deal running right now; if you pre-order Halo 2, and pay a minimum of £3 towards the purchase, you'll receive a Halo 2 poster when you actually purchase the game. It's not clear WHAT poster you get; it's possible it's one that was showing at E3, but then again, it's possible that it's not. If and when we find out more, we'll pass along the info. How NOT to play Halo 2
Hehe - Ross Mills just got back from Gamestars Live... and it sounds like there were some organizational issues. Pretty odd... in all the hands-on reports from all the various sites hosting Halo 2 gameplay that we've seen, this is the first really negative one - and it comes from a pretty hardcore Halo fan. Sometimes, there ain't no justice. (Louis Wu 18:52:40 UTC)

2 for 1 Gamestar Tics
Ross Mills points out that if you're planning on going to the Gamestars Live event in London next week, and you're booking your tickets by phone, you can get 2 for 1 tickets by quoting 'It's London' to the booking agent. Weird, but a good deal. (Louis Wu 13:06:59 UTC)

Fire Sale on Bungie Stuff
Want some Bungie schwag, but thought the Bungie Store was a little expensive? Looks like they're moving - and having a fire sale on existing merchandise. Everything's a few bucks off. Buy before August 31, though, because on that day the eCS/Bungie Store closes for good. Read the details on the front page. Thanks to Ross Mills for the first heads-up. (Louis Wu 13:49:50 UTC)

E.T. - Still Around
Nice catch by Ross Mills - a few weeks after we posted a note about Eric Trautmann's leaving behind his involvement in the Halo world, Eric posted ANOTHER note on his blog stating that he might, in fact, remain on in his old capacity.

My job transition may or may not happen, I may or may not stay in this group. Or I may leave. Or I may not. I exist upon a bedrock of stability and security. :P

That was posted 2 weeks ago... Eric's a bit busy with wedding plans at the moment (good luck, Eric!), but it'll be interesting to see if he sticks around; he's been a major player in shaping the public aspects of the Halo universe from the beginning. (Louis Wu 16:00:59 UTC)

Man, I'd have to clean it... (just kidding)
Ross Mills points out a winnable Limited Edition Halo Xbox, covered by Gabe's doodling, that will be given away at Penny Arcade's Expo in late August. As though you didn't already have enough reasons to try and get there... Update: DOH! I'm as bad at reading as Ross is. Op-ivy points out that this will be given away at the San Diego Comic-Con, July 22-25, NOT PAX. Sorry. (Louis Wu 19:08:29 UTC)

Game Crossovers... over the top
A week ago, Ross Mills challenged our forum to come up with some Halo-related game crossovers - alter a picture of Halo by bringing in elements from another game. There were a number of entries - a couple quite funny - but BOLL, as usual, can't be satisfied with a simple picture - he has to make a PLAYABLE GAME. Starts easy, but it gets hellish around 100. RvB - in a theatre, with a beer
Red vs Blue will be showing at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, TX on July 8, 9, and 10. (How they picked 11:49 pm for showtimes, I don't think I want to know.) Ross Mills also points out some extra Sponsor content related to this event in the RvB Sponsors forum. If you're in the area - it should be a good time! (Louis Wu 18:45:34 UTC)

I gotta try that Feckless Cry idea
Red vs Blue has released a bonus vid found on last month's Computer Gaming World cover CD to sponsors; check the Season 2 Sponsors forum for a link. (Non-sponsors; you might still find that CGW on store shelves.) It shows off some of the FAILED concepts they didn't go with, before deciding on the RvB comedy theme. Personally, I think Soldiers with Passion could have gone somewhere... if only they had more women. Thanks to Ross Mills for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 11:31:38 UTC)

Achronos, too.
broony points out that not only did SketchFactor talk to Xbox.com... Tom Gioconda, aka Achronos, did, too. He discusses the growth of the team, the advantages of the new site over the old, and talks a little about how the site will be used in the future. He can't get into details... but it's clear that Bungie is looking forward to taking advantage to their access to backend data:

For now, let's just say that Bungie.net will be an integral part of the Halo 2 Xbox Live experience and leave at that.

If you're a Bungie fan, and you don't yet have a B.net account... what are you waiting for? Update: Wouldn't you know it? My timing is impeccable. A couple of days ago, Frankie pointed out that Xbox.com would be down for a 24 hour period, beginning at 6 am PST today, to get new features for Xbox Live. That was... 38 minutes before this note was originally posted. (They were a bit late; it went down less than a minute after I posted.) Apologies - you'll have to wait until tomorrow to read this (and the interview with Sketch, as well). Thanks to Ross Mills for reminding me. (Louis Wu 13:28:40 UTC)

Sheila Speaks
Nice find by Ross Mills - Yomary Cruz, the voice actress for Sheila the Tank in Red vs Blue, has a website up, and on it is a movie containing all the Sheila lines in one place. Nice! (Louis Wu 19:22:44 UTC)
