Nasty Way To Go.
The silver lining in the cloud that is my forgetfulness is that occasionally, you get three consecutive days of One One Se7en. (Okay, that's really only gonna happen when I forget to post Fridays and there's Sunday content... so it'll probably never happen again. Enjoy it while you can.) Today's strip finishes up the Unreal Championship series. Still funny, even if not 100% accurate any more. (Louis Wu 16:26:26 UTC)

Artwork, clearing the queue
Seven art bits for you in the Miscellaneous Art section today. Now, before anyone jumps into their email program to write a nasty missive about how this image or that one doesn't meet our posting guidelines, and how the hell could I post it, blah, blah blah (as seems to happen pretty much any time I post ANYTHING these days)... they wouldn't be posted unless I thought they should be posted. If you're not happy with the arbitrary whims of the archive maintainer, find a different place to submit your files (or browse them, for that matter). Grumpy? Me? Never. (Louis Wu 19:32:18 UTC)

Word from Ar
He lives! *Ar-Isildur took time out of his busy schedule of bedrest and nasty treatments to pop into our forum with a quick update. He's not out of the woods yet... but your emails and cards are definitely helping. Way to go, folks! (Louis Wu 17:53:21 UTC)

Stories for a Sunday, and a word of warning
Sunday Fan Fiction for you:

Get to reading! [Side note for Fan Fiction authors: we received two unpleasant notes in the last couple of days - one was rude, the other downright offensive. Both came from authors who were angry that they had received spam because their email address was posted with a story. (One received a virus, apparently.) Nothing says you have to have your email address posted with your story. If you do not tell us not to post it, though, we will, since it seems that most authors WANT feedback. Know this, though: if you choose to send us nasty mail blaming us for messages you receive because your address is posted, we'll pull all your stories, and refuse to accept new ones. I don't need that sort of abuse; you don't pay me enough for it. Thanks.] (Louis Wu 17:57:51 UTC)

No, you a scrub
Heh - head on over to Penny Arcade - looks like Tycho is apologizing for all the nasty things he said about Halo. (Well, actually, just that he's not willing to judge Halo 2 by those nasty things.) Funny strip. Thanks to Zypper for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 16:25:31 UTC)

Fan Fiction news
Interesting find by Vector40 - Apparently, a site called 'fanfiction.net' has a growing collection (28, as of right now) of Halo Fan Fiction pieces... with very little overlap (one article, at first glance) with our collection. I wonder if that means the submission rate will slow down here? Not anytime soon, I'd guess - here's the latest batch:

Read 'em through... don't worry, there'll be more! Nasty Notice: DOH! Careless me, I didn't even pay attention to the fact that one of the stories I uploaded this morning was, in fact, a complete plagiarization (is that a word? It was a total ripoff) of another story found right here - Tyler Sivertsen's 'Through the Eyes of a Marine' was a word-for-word transcription of Jaywhit10's 'The Hell of War Through the Eyes of a Marine'. I've pulled the offending story, and I apologize to Jaywhit10 for not catching this sooner. Plagiarism sucks. (Louis Wu 14:40:25 UTC)

VE talks to Matt Soell
Robert 'Apache' Howarth, of VoodooExtreme, has interviewed Matt Soell... and a good interview it is, too. Matt holds forth on subjects as diverse as nasty critics and console controllers - and speaks a little to some of the complaints we've heard voiced recently:

Looking back on Halo?s development, quite a few weapons didn?t make it into the Xbox build. What other features were either cut out or stripped down to stream line the game?

We always have a ton of ideas that don't make it in for one reason or another. Vehicles, weapons, multiplayer game ideas, maps...for every element in Halo that was polished enough to ship in the final game, there are a dozen things that didn't make the cut. We are lucky in that we have artists and programmers and designers with a surfeit of ideas.

Go read the rest of it! (Louis Wu 14:39:53 UTC)

Halo preview in Portuguese
Thanks to Razorback, who pointed out a Halo preview in Portuguese, at GameOver. Babelfish did a pretty nasty job with this... but it seems to be relatively accurate. If you speak Portuguese, go take a look! (Louis Wu 14:39:00 UTC)

May 2001 Gamepro Halo article scanned
Speaking of adding dead tree articles, we've also scanned in last month's GamePro article (it's only one page, but weighs in at a hefty 382K) - short, but again, there are new shots, and the info is mostly on target. If only they hadn't used that nasty 'X' background... Higher-res versions of the new shots here, too, will be added to the Screenshots section soon. (Louis Wu 02:19:03 UTC)

Battleground: Halo - now harder to see
Man, they've done it again. Battleground: Halo, the Halo site voted Most Likely to Overhaul Their Graphics, have once again overhauled their graphics... and this time, have joined the ranks of Sites That Are Nasty In Netscape 4.x. Minimum requirements to view the site: IE 4, Netscape 6 (yeah, it sucks, but it uses bigger fonts), and Flash 5. If you fulfill these requirements, check out the mailbag... there's some funny stuff in there. Pax. (Crux Fidelis 05:35:19 UTC)

HP gets new forum, R.net gets no forum
One up, one down... News from Halo forums around the net tonight. Rampancy.net had taken its forum down until they can find a nasty little bug... and Haloplayers has upgraded to the latest version of InfinityBoard, cleaning up some bugs. Check 'em out! (Louis Wu 23:30:42 UTC)

Storm problems solved after 48 hours
Attacked by the Covenant! Almost all of bungie.org (including, obviously, this site) went offline on Sunday morning, 4 am UTC. Finally, almost 48 hours later, we're back up and running. No, this had nothing to do with bungie.net or bungie.com going offline... those events happened because those servers are moving from Chicago to Redmond. And no, it had nothing to do with Microsoft shutting us down... it was a nasty nor'easter that killed two repeaters and a large chunk of underground cable. Our upstream provider seems to think all the problems are solved. We hope so. Apologies for the downtime. (Louis Wu 17:54:17 UTC)

In keeping with the spirit of Spring Cleaning, we've spruced up the Miscellaneous Art pages, and gotten rid of those nasty frames. Hope you like! (Louis Wu 03:17:40 UTC)
