Halo for the Age of Kings
Wonga. Took the day off yesterday... and the mailbox is flooded. Let's see what we can get through. First up: ZKP writes to say that he and a group of friends are making a Halo mod for Age of Kings: The Conquerers. You can find basic info on their website - I'm sure more info will be forthcoming. Halo - it's everywhere! (Louis Wu 13:40:15 UTC)

Wait... simulated reality? My head hurts.
Okay, this isn't Halo-related in the slightest, I don't think - but it DOES hold some interest for those of you who follow Bungie, the company, and the people that (used to) work for it. According to USA Today, there's a new reality TV show coming soon - Xquest will be brought to you by Ron Howard (who looks NOTHING like Ritchie - or Opie, for that matter - any more) and Brian Grazer, and will take contestants into space - well, simulated space. Simulated space? Yeah - "the travelers and viewers will be transported to space virtual-reality style, thanks to high-tech graphics and the help of co-producer Alex Seropian, a creator of the popular Halo game." Wonga! Is this what Wideload is doing after Stubbs ships? Thanks, x amount. Update: Thanks to a story in Variety (which isn't reachable without a subscription, unfortunately), I now understand this has nothing to do with Wideload; Seropian is also a principal of Spectrum MediaWorks, a company looking to tie together television, videogames, and 'networked media' - and it's under this umbrella that he's working with the Xquest project. (The Variety article specifically discusses the lack of connection between this project and Halo, in any form.) (Louis Wu 19:01:43 UTC)

The Fist of Justice
Wonga. SketchFactor posted a Banhammer Update a few hours ago, over at Bungie.net (thanks, Dry Ice, for noticing) - in the first 24 hours of AU4.0's existence, 2550 (wouldn't it have been nice if it had been 2552, instead?) people have been permanently banned from Halo 2 Matchmaking. Nice! There's also a mini-faq addressing some of the rumors swirling around - go read. (Louis Wu 00:49:35 UTC)

Halo Cutscene Library - Complete
The Halo Cutscene Library is now complete - we've posted the Final Credits today. And for those who don't want to download individual files, HaloChat has bundled up all of the WMP9 Hi-res versions (minus this one, I'd assume), and made them available in a single 368 mb zip download. Wonga! (Louis Wu 14:06:19 UTC)

Montage Heaven
Wonga. If you like montages, swing by Halo2Forum - they started a contest a few weeks ago, and received 135 movie entries, which they've narrowed down to 8 finalists. Two of those have already been released on HBO, but the other 6 are new to me - all told, you're looking at 500 MB of montage goodness. Here's hoping the bandwidth holds out... thanks, Z. Your Guest Is As Good As Mine.
If you're feeling withdrawal symptoms from One One Se7en because it's the weekend (yeah, like it's good enough to be ADDICTED to), you can swing by Stuntmutt's blog; he's posted a series of guest strips that have been building up. I'm sort of glad I don't play online with the Helljumpers... And while we're talking about comics - Mr Kippling posted Bye-stander 8, and Über-Chief 69 posted Resolute 9 (and redid his website). And Red Leader posted "This Island Earth" 6. Wonga! (Louis Wu 12:45:08 UTC)

More movies at CollegeHumor (and elsewhere)
Lots of College Humor links today... folks went searching. (First off: that GTA vid we mentioned yesterday can be found at its home site, as well - thanks, Austin Wilkinson. And while we're on the subject of GTA remakes... Fbu pointed out that he made his own version a couple of months ago, on KoTHalo.com.) Uber Hax0r sent us a link to Napoleon Halo-mite, a remake of a Napoleon Dynamite scene in Halo. This, too, can be found on its home site - and was first pointed out on our forum by Corgana, a couple of weeks ago, who ALSO found it on collegehumor. And LeaveMeAlone117 sent us a link for a Nike Just Do It spoof (which was actually posted on our forum by nash--housewares on April 1, but I was a bit busy preparing for a LANfest, and missed it). Toys, toys, more toys
Wow - if you're one of those people that has to have EVERY Halo action figure... break out that wallet. Gamestop is offering a couple of case packs; you can buy the Halo 2 Warthog Battle Damaged Case Pack, with 12 warthogs total (six regular, four battle-damaged assault hogs, and two civilian hogs), for just over $100... or the Halo 2 Spartan Battle Damage Case Pack, with 6 figures in 3 colors (only $90 for this one). Wonga! Thanks, littlebigman. (Louis Wu 12:05:27 UTC)

A Wagnerian sense of pomp and bombast
Wonga. Another 'Work at Bungie' article is up - this one covering Marty O'Donnell, Audio Artiste Extraordinaire (yeah, I've used something like that before... Hi, Matt!). Frankie asks Marty lots of questions, gets a few answers. Go read! (Louis Wu 02:38:11 UTC)

Flying Pigs, and Exploding Frogs
Wonga. Looks like I got interviewed. I hardly even noticed. Ducain, over at High Impact Halo, asked me a few questions about 'The History of Halo Tricking', or somesuch... and then wrote up the answers all pretty-like. Go read. (Louis Wu 03:17:47 UTC)

Carrying the field
Gamespot's got another article up about the great month Halo 2 and GTA: SA just finished; in fact, it was so great that total console software sales for the month were 11% above their November 2003 values - and without those two titles, the numbers would have been 21% BELOW last year's values. Wonga. The Major League Gaming website has been totally overhauled for the 2005 season; there is a quarter of a million dollars on the line this year. There's an article about point and prize breakdowns for those competing, details about upcoming content from Dolbex, and more! Check it all out. (Louis Wu 16:54:58 UTC)

Enrichenation Schemes Wanted
Wonga. New Letters to the Webmaster over at Bungie.net; along with the usual ridicule and scorn is word of the possibility of customized shirts (emblazoned with your gamertag). Hmm... the ridicule and scorn is pretty fun, too. (Louis Wu 02:38:35 UTC)

What everyone is saying
Is this gonna be a habit? (I hope not...) Daily article roundup:

Movies:
A bunch of people have already released vids for Halo 2 - we've held off until today posting them so people wouldn't feel tempted too early.

  • nukedude put together a multiplayer montage, with a couple of tiny bits from single player. Minor (really minor) spoilers. 32 mb, QuickTime, hosted by Gil27.
  • HaloGT is hosting Halo GT Video #10 - glitches and cool stuff, some wild things to look at. (Spoilers galore.) In DivX format, 28.7 mb, or QuickTime format, 27.8 mb. The divX version is also mirrored on Syzygy1.com.
  • Not really Halo 2 - but it's the first time the public can see this. A long time ago, Bungie made a cool little surround sound test, using a nicely rendered grunt and a hunter. You could only see it if you knew someone. Now, anyone with a copy of the Limited Edition can see it - just go to the Set-up section. Thanks, KingScott.
  • Frogblast is back. With a vengeance. Utfoo has been updated with tricks from nearly every single solo level in Halo 2. Vids, pics, the works. The guy doesn't stop. Try not to kill his server. (I'm gonna see what we can do about setting up a mirror, just in case.)
  • A number of people have found skulls on Campaign levels. At least TWO of these removes your HUD altogether. (In fact, I suspect that's what they're there for - making Halo movies will be a LOT easier with no HUD right off the bat. :) ) MarkHawk pointed out a movie in this forum thread - we've had a few more submitted, and will do our best to get them posted.
  • Fileplanet is hosting a 'man-on-the-street' vid talking to people waiting outside an EB Games. 38.9 mb, WMP9 format. (Thanks, Ross.)

Halo-related Webcomics:

The Penultimate Bungie Giga-Quiz 1.0
poena.dare is back - with the Penultimate Bungie Giga-Quiz 1.0. Wonga! (Don't ask me why it's not the Ultimate Giga-Quiz - I can't imagine him doing this again.) 343 questions to test your knowledge of Bungie lore - and you don't have to do it all in one sitting! You can read the 'official' press release on our (lamentably empty) portal site, or just get over to the quiz itself. Warning - it relies heavily on Javascript, and is broken with Safari. (Works fine with Firefox on OSX, though.) (Louis Wu 17:08:56 UTC)

G4TV - Content Overload
Tons and tons and tons of new Halo content at G4TV today:

In addition to that, there are streaming versions of all four Halo 2 Day Red vs Blue commercials (Flash and WMP formats) - and if you can't stand those, you can grab 320x240 downloadable QuickTimes of the two we hadn't already posted: Sick Day (1.8 mb) and Back From the Future (1.1 mb). Wonga. Is that enough? Thanks to Ben Vear for starting off the search. (Louis Wu 02:34:28 UTC)

Sonny Chiba would SO pwn him...
Wonga. Amazing as it sounds, Frankie is STILL continuing with the Bungie Weekly Updates - this one is at Subnova. New TV spots coming next week, a sick SketchFactor, and a guest Mister Chief rendering by BOLL. Go read! (And Sketch - here's hoping you get better!) Thanks to Eric Biro, who let us know while I was watching Big Fish with my family. Update: oops - Boxer points out that I misread the bit about Sketch - it's his DOG that's sick. (I guess i thought Frankie was insulting him while he was down. :) ) Sketch - here's hoping your dog gets better! (Louis Wu 02:20:55 UTC)

Multimedia Blitz - this Friday
Gaming Horizon has a story on the relaunch of Halo2.com, the official Halo 2 website; new screenshots, new movies, 3 brand-new wallpapers. Wonga! The Bungie Update Needs You!
Wonga. Today's Weekly Bungie Update is gonna be different than any other... and it needs YOU. This one's gonna be interactive; the New Mombasa forum is going to be the focus of a Q&A session between Sketch and Frankie... and you, the fans. Jump on the forum (the thread's already picked out for you), ask a question about Halo 2 (multiplayer-only)... and in roughly 2 hours (2 pm PDT, 5 pm EDT, 9 pm GMT) Sketch and Frankie will log on and begin answering questions. There are some basic rules; read the news post for details. (Pay attention to the news post, even.) Now get to thinking! UPDATE: The question period is over, and Frankie and Sketch have begun posting answers in a separate thread here. Tons of juicy info, but, again, read the rules. When they say "do not post in this thread", they aren't kidding. (updated by CZ) (Louis Wu 18:52:51 UTC)
