Jump In.
Hawty McBloggy continues her countdown to Halo 3 - yesterday was "Make a Master Chief out of Play-Doh" Day (a much better choice than Talk Like a Pirate Day), and a bunch of people participated. Today, she's asking folks to rewrite songs with Halo lyrics, and she kicks off the festivities with 'I'm a Halo Girl, in a Halo World'. (I'd love to hear someone record this!) Check it out - keep yourself entertained! (Louis Wu 18:00:17 UTC)

Briar's Armor starts on Halo 3 goodies
DOH! Almost forgot. Briar's Armor, who has made some pretty darned cool Halo 2 armor over the past couple of years, is trying his hand at Halo 3 armor; a prelminary shot of the helmet shows some nice details. Can't wait for the rest! (Louis Wu 18:19:03 UTC)

A Miner Problem.
Doh! Almost forgot to post today's One One Se7en. Maybe it was my subconscious... telling me to keep away from Halo Wars jokes... (Louis Wu 20:09:08 UTC)

7 on the 7th Results
Our most recent 7 on the 7th contest had the fewest number of valid entries to of any contest to date; I blame the short timeframe and the relatively unorthodox ruleset. That said, we got some great entries! The hands-down favorite of all the judges was Omega's 'Grunt Crossing' - but this is a 7 on the 7th contest, so we don't HAVE just one winner - we have 7. You can see them all from this hastily-put-up page (winners have stars). Congrats to RAWPOWER95 (One One Se7en, painted), Doctor Zoidberg (Mister Chief), ICDedPpl (Legendary Skull, painted), Simen (Marathon logo), ManKitten (One One Se7en - nice lawn!), and przybysz86 (rocket launcher) for making the cut - and thanks to EVERYONE who contributed images to this contest! Frankie and Sketch are down in San Diego for Comic-Con, so I can't even tell you what the winners have won yet - yes, this is unusual. Sorry. Soon! In the meantime, check out the entries. Update: doh! I forgot to pull the .htaccess file - you couldn't get in without a username/pass. Sorry! Fixed now. (Louis Wu 20:33:17 UTC)

A Fine Use of a Fun Product
Heh - spartanerik noticed a Halo-related construction over at HowStuffWorks, in an article entitled 'How Play-Doh® Modeling Compound Works'; on the off chance that the pic disappears, we've archived it here. Good stuff! (Louis Wu 15:32:44 UTC)

c0ld's Halo Hide and Seek
He's at it again; c0ld vengeance has posted 10 screenshots on our forum, and challenged you, the viewer, to come up with an exact location for each one. You're going to need to be pretty specific on these... check it out! Update: DOH! 2 minutes after I posted this, c0ld confirmed that Dojorkan had nailed all but one of these. I should have gotten to it sooner... guess you'll have to wait for the next round. (Louis Wu 00:22:51 UTC)

Vomitous Lumps
Weekly Update is up - pretty short, because Frankie has no time, but hey. OMG - no Mister Chief. Louis am cry. Update: DOH! Forgot to mention that this was available in our Weekly Update Archive, as well. Update 2: Frankie rocks - he added an Angsty Mister Chief, just for me. I'm printing that and framing it. Really. A writeup of Staten's NU talk
Tempus Fugit found a post on the TeamXbox Forums from someone who went to Joe Staten's talk at Northwestern on Saturday. Some interesting tidbits about Halo 2's ending (3 levels cut, not just one), some tidbits about the Halo movie (it won't be a story adaptation, a lot will be CG, no director yet), a tiny bit about E3 (or not). Go read! Update: DOH! I should check our own forum for this stuff... a few hours later, SleeperQ posted his own writeup. (Louis Wu 04:10:44 UTC)

Stubbs Contest Update
DOH! I missed the end of the contest - but better late than never, right? A couple of weeks ago, we mentioned a contest at Polymallet.com, home of Christ Hughes, who worked for Bungie and then Wideload. A couple of days ago, The Battle Cat, over at Wideloadgames dot org, announced that a winner had surfaced - and explained what was found, and what it meant. Congrats, Edward Duff! (While you're there, follow the link in the second news post to the Stubbs the Zombie video holiday card at Animation Farm - it's pretty funny!) (Louis Wu 13:32:28 UTC)

Halo 2 Soundtrack - from a High School Marching Band
Cybrfrk spent the day at the Arizona State High School marching band competition yesterday (congrats to his son's band, rated as Excellent at the event!). He was taking pictures with his digital camera when Sandra Day O'Connor High School, from Deer Valley, Arizona, took the field - they performed a program called 'Halo 2'. He recorded it using the camera's video mode - so the video is small, but the audio is fine; check out the songs they did! Eight and a half minutes, QuickTime (14.3 mb) or WMP9 (13.7 mb). 17 Days Through Hell Trailer
DOH! I forgot to post this yesterday; it passed the MPRRS on Sunday night. It's a trailer for 'From the Oder to the Elbe: 17 Days Through Hell', and it was created by Roland. Screen format is a very strange 1200x600 pixels, but if that doesn't fit on your screen, you can watch it at 50% resolution, and it will actually look better. It's a trailer for an upcoming World War II reenactment. The WMP9 version is 21.7 mb, the QuickTime version is 21.9 mb. Enjoy! (Louis Wu 11:06:10 UTC)

Energy Sword... realized
DOH! This was posted last night, I put it aside to add to the news today... then spaced completely. AutoDr created an energy sword from plexiglass and steel, and man, is it pretty! He's wondering whether there would be a market for these if he made more... hmm. There's always the Microsoft IP issue to worry about. Check 'em out! (Louis Wu 18:28:32 UTC)

I Love Bees, Reordered - Parts 11, 12, and Afterword
DOH! Webshift gently reminded me (via the forum) that while I'd updated the reordered I Love Bees page yesterday to include the last three chapters, I'd forgotten to make a news post about it. Go grab the end of the story! And feel free to use that forum thread to let Webshift know what you think of the project! (Louis Wu 11:21:35 UTC)

Boy Scout Patches - Redux
A couple of weeks ago, we mentioned Halo patches from the Boy Scout National Jamboree - thanks to contractor, from Red vs Blue, who had a complete set, you can see what all three looked like. Nice! Update: DOH! I forgot to actually link to them. Sorry. (Louis Wu 00:34:17 UTC)

The End of Something I Did Not Want to End...
In late January, Mike Miller began a Legendary Walkthrough of Halo 2, and for the next four months, he'd release a new level, once per week (or so), with hints, multiple plans of attack, and plenty of video examples, to help you get through what (at first) seemed nearly impossible. Today, that guide is finished; Mike's writeup of The Great Journey, Halo 2's final level, has been posted. It contains more than a dozen movies, as usual in both QuickTime and WMP9 formats for your viewing convenience, and quite a bit of discussion about tactics and approaches. There are also some very practical—though non-trivial to implement, especially for folks like me, somewhat less coordinated than Mike—ideas for the final battle with Tartarus; give it a read! I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Mike for his work on this project; even when the skills needed were out of my league, the consistent quality of the writing, the thoughtfulness and comprehensiveness of the analyses, the practicality of the video aids - all the pieces he put together were polished, professional, and clean. I'm proud to have been able to help get this guide out to the Halo community, and I know that Mike's gotten quite a few people through the game on a difficulty level they might not have reached on their own! Update: DOH! I forgot - he also updated a few bits on the intro page (mostly near the bottom). In fact, it's been updated 4 or 5 times since it was first posted; if you haven't read it through in a while, it might be worth another look! (Louis Wu 16:33:28 UTC)

New maps - available already
Word was that the downloadable content would be available by morning-ish, PST, today - but we just got a report (thanks, Jinno) that it's already up, at least in some places. Remember - they're staggering it, so you might not see it right away. Update: Doh - looks like folks have been downloading for hours. Silly me. (Louis Wu 12:12:30 UTC)

Reviews and news
Last Thursday, BOLL sent us a note about a Halo review at Tom's Hardware; they didn't actually have the review up, they had a page that said 'we're not sleeping until this review is finished! Keep refreshing this page!' Every day, I went back. Nothing. Finally, today, Zaknafein pointed out that they'd put a review up - at a different URL! Doh. (If the URL is anything to go by, they posted it on the 13th.) There's no overall rating - but they loved the audio and gameplay, liked the graphics, weapons, A.I., and story, were okay with the vehicles, and thought the level design needed work. Other reviews around the net today:

And geez, while we're here, let's get the Halo 2 press from around the net out of the way:

  • BYU NewsNet - release coverage
  • Paly Voice - release coverage
  • Daily Times (Philadelphia) - Halo 2's popularity
  • IGN - A Second Look (Editors revisit their thoughts)
  • GamesIndustry.biz - Halo 2 has sold more than a quarter million units in the UK in its first week (3rd fastest selling title on record)
  • The Daily Northwestern (Illinois) - silly article about people having Halo stolen (among lots of other stuff)

I'm sure there'll be more as time goes on. (Louis Wu 14:25:40 UTC)

Bungie Store Updated
James Phelps noticed that the Bungie Store is now offering pre-ordering for three of the new Halo 2 figures. Now's your chance to ensure you get the Brute, the new MC, and the Warthog. Update: Doh! There's a new Master Chief Hoody, too. Thanks, Dave. The store's filling out nicely! (mnemesis 01:28:05 UTC)

You ARE waiting for it, right?
Gamespy has posted a Xbox Fall Preview Guide - and Halo 2 rates an 'awesome' (as usual). I can't figure out how they ordered them - Halo 2 is referred to in the opening paragraph ("not all of the titles are as anticipated as a certain first-person juggernaut") but shows up on page 4. Guess it doesn't matter. Go read. Thanks to Rams, of HaloPlanet, for the heads-up. Update: TruneX points out that the order is dictated by release date. DOH! (Louis Wu 21:43:13 UTC)

The Biggest QuickTime
This was finished a little while ago... but I've been dealing with the nightmare that is the HBO forum for a while, and couldn't post. I'd love to be able to offer a massive QuickTime version of the trailer to match the obscene WMP9 copies Microsoft released today... but I can't find any tools that will convert a movie that big. (Small consolation for mac users - the biggest version plays back at a data rate of 9000KB/sec, well above what a majority of PCs can handle; many folks who grabbed the enormous one are watching a pretty jerky video.) The best I could do was a 720x405 version that weighs in at 9.5 mb. You can grab it at the bottomless pit that is Mythica.org, or the twisted joint that is Boomerica. (Didja like how I subtly got a knee joke in there without actually saying knee? Cool, huh? DOH!) (Louis Wu 21:42:59 UTC)

Man, I'd have to clean it... (just kidding)
Ross Mills points out a winnable Limited Edition Halo Xbox, covered by Gabe's doodling, that will be given away at Penny Arcade's Expo in late August. As though you didn't already have enough reasons to try and get there... Update: DOH! I'm as bad at reading as Ross is. Op-ivy points out that this will be given away at the San Diego Comic-Con, July 22-25, NOT PAX. Sorry. (Louis Wu 19:08:29 UTC)

DOH! Halo Orbit, A German Halo fansite, published their own analysis of the third multiplayer Halo 2 shot yesterday... and I never got back to it. :( Sorry about that! If you read German, check it out! (Louis Wu 13:35:07 UTC)
