Spartan 458, deconstructed
IGN continues to post new information about Dead or Alive 4... and there continues to be new info about the Halo tie-in. This article has info about Nicole's special attacks (The MAC lunge and a plasma grenade move, for example), as well as another mini-interview with Itagaki. There's some pretty interesting stuff in there - go read! Thanks to 3Suns for noticing it. (Louis Wu 14:18:12 UTC)

Overheating Plasma Rifles
Joystiq has a pointer to an article at The Brig.org, looking at the top ten ways you know you're playing too much Halo. (Yes, there've been dozens of these lists on our forum... but hey, this one got referenced by Joystiq, okay?) This one definitely seems aimed at an older crowd. (Louis Wu 16:12:25 UTC)

What an awesome Christmas present this would be!
This submission (47K) blew me away - this plasma sword letter opener was made by Paul S., by hand. His words:

Made by hand from 2mm anodised aluminium, about 150mm long and partly polished for a two-tone look. The handle design was modified for two-finger use (held between finger & thumb) and the inner edges of the blades are sharpened to cut through envelopes, although not too sharp, as it apparently got used as a hairclip on occasion. I still have the template if anyone wants to make one for themselves.

(This was uploaded to us about a month ago - I sincerely apologize for the delay.) Paul - if you're reading this, we'd LOVE to host the template. (Louis Wu 14:25:25 UTC)

This Spartan Life - Body Count
This Spartan Life was updated yesterday, but we forgot to put up a news post... the newest segment, Episode 2 Module 3, is called 'Body Count', and the topic is gun control. Chest Harlton, the president of the National Plasma Rifle Association, debates a small child about the correlation, or lack thereof, between handgun ownership and household accidents. Go watch! Sticky Style 2
A movie passed the MPRRS a few days ago - but because it was encoded in H.264, I thought it might be better to re-encode it into formats more universal across the hardware spectrum. This has taken a bit longer than expected - apologies to Spuzzum, the creator, and thanks for his patience! The video is called 'Sticky Style 2', and shows off some pretty amazing plasma grenade sticks in Halo 2 campaign play. (I shudder to think how long it took to set a couple of these up...) The brute tallies were especially entertaining. Watch it - and enjoy some really well-timed gameplay! You can grab a QuickTime version (37.6 mb) or a WMP9 version (40.8 mb)... then go grab your own stickydooms and see how you keep up! (Louis Wu 22:35:15 UTC)

Noobs Gone Wild 3
A couple of days ago, BoneKin's 'Noobs Gone Wild 3', a testament to the dumb stuff you can do in Halo 2 multiplay, passed our Movie Peer Review Rating System - but we were out of bandwidth, and couldn't really afford to put up mirrors yet. It's September, now, though, and we've gotten a fresh shipment of nice ripe bandwidth - so go grab a copy. It's available in both WMP9 format (47.8 mb) or QuickTime format (40.2 mb). The funniest parts are all the things that can go wrong with a plasma grenade... (Louis Wu 12:38:23 UTC)

Broken Halo - or Whiny Writer?
Last night, Ename Nep pointed out an article over at 1Up.com, entitled 'Broken Halo: Five ways Bungie can fix Halo 2'. It's nothing that hasn't been said a thousand times before on Halo forums the whole 'net round... what makes this somewhat surprising is the fact that it shows up, in this form, on a site like 1Up. (I'll say right now that my respect for their journalistic integrity has dropped a notch or two because of this article.) It's full of absurd absolute statements ("Since the rockets on Coagulation don't respawn when someone is holding them, the Banshee pilot (unless he's maladroit) is invincible") and faulty logic ("Because there is a singular power weapon on Colossus with no counterpart, even shoddily organized teams can get a beam rifle, use it to get a fast lead, and then hold the beam rifle with a couple shots left in it for the rest of the round and use their lead to win") - it's so strident in its tired arguments that even the decent suggestions (I liked the idea of retaining Halo's plasma pistol overheating-after-an-overcharge feature, which would have toned down the hard-to-counter PP/BR combo) are lost in the rhetoric. Cody Miller pointed to a Slashdot poster's summary of this article that nailed the problem quite nicely. (Louis Wu 03:32:52 UTC)

E32K5, remembered.
Our own Count Zero has finally compiled his photos from E3 this year - there's very, very little Halo content, except for the Plasma Fiesta subsection. And I must say I was disappointed with his Booth Babes section - he missed some of the best ones. All that aside, though, there are a LOT of pics, and some very funny captions. Check it out! ...and the salsa was to die for.
The highlight of E3 this year for many of us was actually not part of E3 - it was the party at Deanero's house on Friday night. Originally dubbed 'Plasma Fiesta', its name seems to have morphed to 'D3' - Dean's Desserts and Deathmatch. There's a great writeup of the party, complete with pictures and lessons that can be learned for your own lanfests, over at Bungie.net - and never let it be said that SketchFactor doesn't take every opportunity possible to rub in the fact that Frankie missed the salsa at this year's event. Go read! (Louis Wu 02:37:25 UTC)

Where's The Beef?
What happens when plasma grenades fall in love? What's a tynosaur, and why should you run from it? What ARE popcorn shrimp, anyway? These questions, and many more (as well as a mini-melee montage) can all be found in the latest video release from PraetoriaGuard's website - hit 'Downloads', and grab Video Three, "Where's The Beef?", in either WMP9 Advanced or WMP9 Standard formats (thanks, Gideon, for taking care of the Mac crowd!). A bit over 22 mb, in either format - 8 minutes of hilarity and Cheech and Chong imitations. (Louis Wu 20:21:45 UTC)

Synide's E3 Wrapup
Synide wrote up his experiences at E3 last week over at synide.net (a FANTASTIC read) - and excerpted the plasma fiesta lanfest portion for posting on our own forum. The most interesting part of the excerpt for me - the realization, by someone deeply enmeshed in the competitive scene, that competitive gametypes with people who aren't part of that culture aren't nearly as fun. I realize he'll never convince the hardcore on either side of the issue - but for all the THINKING people, this is something worth reading. There's also a short, very dark video, showing the end of Round One of the ice-cream-eating contest (and why they all brain-froze before it was over). (Louis Wu 14:22:35 UTC)

Salsa, Ice Cream, and Halo.
I dropped a writeup of last night's E3 Plasma Fiesta LANfest onto our forum - I had a really good time, and saw a LOT of people I either hadn't seen for a while or had never actually met in person; a perfect ending to a nice E3 week. Here's hoping some of the other participants join in with their own comments! (Louis Wu 19:21:34 UTC)

The Samurai Spirit
Hehe - took almost a week - but Bungie finally posted the post-mortem of last week's Halo Humpday Challenge, during which they were murdalized by the GunShin clan, a group of Japan's finest Halo warriors. Man... the idea of a two man team, one with plasma pistol, the other with a battle rifle, working together faster than a single person can switch from one to the other... wow. Go read. Thanks to JHG, who noticed it before I did. (Louis Wu 22:06:01 UTC)

More Movie Stuff
Man... you can't take a night off around here, things just move too fast. Okay, while I was sleeping (and other stuff), we heard:

  • Ripp0n's Montage got another pair of direct download mirrors; a bunch of you have gotten it via BitTorrent, but for those who can't, HALOChat has put it up via HTTP, and there's another copy at That Weasel Television. Check yesterday's news if you don't know what this is about.
  • Sharkface217 created a Halo PC Tribute Video, and released it at the Gamers Alliance. I'm not sure I get it, completely... but there it is. 31.5 mb, WMP9 format. (For me, personally... if I were a new HaloPC player and this was the first thing I saw... I'd probably pick a different game.)
  • Devin Olsen released his own Halo 2 Montage vid - just under 19 mb, WMP9 format. Lots of Killtaculars and above. (Some good footage showing the potency of the plasma pistol/magnum combination... I love the Colossus 'attack while in the air, kill before you land' kill.) Update: this one, too, is having trouble - Devin asks for mirrors. If you can help him out, drop him a line! Update 2: Yayap to the rescue!
  • Craven47 posted a short (43 second) 'Dance Movie' (3 Spartans jumping around on Lockout) on Putfile. Just over 5 mb, WMP9 format.
  • That Weasel, always around to help, has mirrored a whole bunch of OTHER recent movies, besides Ripp0n's - The Codex Trailer, Vehicular Pwnage, and the Sleeping player are all there now.

I'm sure there are/will be more over the course of the day - but I'll make a new post later. And the bandwidth just keeps going up, up, up, up... (none of this is ours, though.) (Louis Wu 14:08:41 UTC)

Bungie Cares.
I meant to post this last night, but forgot. There was a large thread on our forum recently discussing the sound you hear on the Zanzibar bridge (the bridge that leads to the plasma sword) - we mentioned the issue here. We got a post from Jay Weinland, creator of the sound effect in question - who apologizes for the bug that makes the sound repeat for some players, and explains why it's as loud as it is in the first place. This doesn't FIX the problem (as Jay mentions, he's 'an audio guy in a programmer's world'), but it might make some of you feel better that Bungie employees DO care how their work affects you. Halo stunts outside the community
Interesting. One of the very first vids I saw in Halo 2 was someone exploiting the 6 plasma shields on Delta Halo for Tank Launching - park your tank on the shields, and if it's well-placed, it flies nicely when the shields regenerate. There have been 2 or 3 vids circulating around the community, showing this trick - but a couple of guys found that submitting their vid to Slashdot drastically increases the audience. Two things happened; their bandwidth got toasted (no big deal, because some /. regular simply bittorrented the film, and you can grab it now thanks to hundreds of technophiles), and they got credit OUTSIDE the Halo community for this stunt. (There's a third thing, too, I guess - they decreased the chances that a truly innovative film will even be MENTIONED by Slashdot. Bummer.) The vid they put out is DivX 5 format, 31 mb, almost 4 minutes long. After the first 30 seconds, you've seen it all. (Louis Wu 10:01:10 UTC)

Now THAT'S a gun.
I'm STILL not finished with the new HBO/HIH Tricks site (this holiday week threw a glitch in a lot of projects), but there was a vid posted to our forum this morning which is pretty cool, and worth seeing. Gil27 managed to film the handheld Scarab gun - a plasma rifle, hidden away on Metropolis, that fires Scarab bolts. (Given that the Scarab was seen in Halo commercials, it doesn't really seem to me that there is any spoiler material in this video... but you never know.) The video is 12.4 mb, DivX 5 format. What a deadly gun! (Louis Wu 15:02:36 UTC)

Dinky points out an article at Gamespy that looks at the 'Top 10 First-Person Melee Weapons' - the Plasma Sword from Halo 2 is number 6. Update: 7he One { Ryan R } points out that he noted this article on our forum about a week ago - oops... (Louis Wu 19:13:24 UTC)

Bungie Weekly Update Archive - complete
Several people have pointed out to me that the fact that you could shoot grenades out of the air was posted in a Bungie Weekly Update. I went to our database and did a few searches - I tried 'grenade', and 'shoot', and 'plasma', but I couldn't find it. I realized that our database was a bit out of date (at least a month, in fact) - so I brought it up to the present. (I didn't include last week's Weekly What's Update - because that's a new feature, and will eventally have its own section - though I did search through it manually.) I must say - even with the updated version, I cannot find this reference folks speak of. If anyone has better information about where to find this quote, I'd be happy to credit them here. Thanks! Update: Thanks to Archaos46, who pinned down where this reference came from. It was the interview that Gamespy did with Tyson Green on November 1; page 2 contains this quote:

[...]it is now possible (albeit extremely difficult) to snipe and detonate them midair, but they are pretty true to the original aside from that.

Glad to get that out of the way! (Louis Wu 19:18:19 UTC)

Eat the Path
Thanks to the many people who wrote in to point out an article on HowStuffworks where Chris Butcher goes into detail about Halo 2's AI. Take a look behind the curtain and see exactly what's going through those Elites' heads as they roast you with their dual plasma rifles. (Count Zero 01:44:37 UTC)
