It's 24.9 mb (so that it fits into his 25 mb Comcast space, in WMP9 format. (Louis Wu 11:44:37 UTC)
July 26, 2004 Link to this post Now THAT'S a big QuickTime. Thanks to clarksbrother, for going above and beyond to help provide to Mac users what Windows users got last week. (Thanks, also, to Rufo Sanchez, who tried to do the same, just a little later.) You can now download a 1920x1080 version of the Halo 2 Ad released recently; it's 43 mb, and it plays BEAUTIFULLY on my G5, though I get less than a frame per second off the G3 laptop. Update: SanchezTheLlama has put up a mirror of this file. Grab it from him - he's got a lot of gigs to burn in the next 4 days! (Louis Wu 21:38:05 UTC)
July 26, 2004 Link to this post Screen Grabs from Hi-Res Trailer at Kikizo Kikizo.com has put up a bunch of very nice screengrabs from the Ad trailer - they're listed as 800x600, but most of them are 1280x720, with a few that are 800x450. Very nice quality. (Louis Wu 19:13:05 UTC)
July 23, 2004 Link to this post The Biggest QuickTime This was finished a little while ago... but I've been dealing with the nightmare that is the HBO forum for a while, and couldn't post. I'd love to be able to offer a massive QuickTime version of the trailer to match the obscene WMP9 copies Microsoft released today... but I can't find any tools that will convert a movie that big. (Small consolation for mac users - the biggest version plays back at a data rate of 9000KB/sec, well above what a majority of PCs can handle; many folks who grabbed the enormous one are watching a pretty jerky video.) The best I could do was a 720x405 version that weighs in at 9.5 mb. You can grab it at the bottomless pit that is Mythica.org, or the twisted joint that is Boomerica. (Didja like how I subtly got a knee joke in there without actually saying knee? Cool, huh? DOH!) (Louis Wu 21:42:59 UTC)
July 23, 2004 Link to this post Hi-Res Halo 2 Ad available Tocki writes to point out that Halo Orbit is hosting a hi-res version of the trailer (9.8 mb, 640x480 (yeah, that's not the right aspect ratio), WMP9 format) that they found at MyXbox.at. QuickTime coming soon... Update: Here's a 640x360 (aspect-corrected) QuickTime version (and a mirror), 5.8 mb. There MIGHT be higher-res versions coming later... if I can figure out how to work with the truly monstrous files Microsoft has sent me. Update 2: Halo Orbit has put up another mirror of the QuickTime version, for europeans who would rather have this. (Louis Wu 16:02:20 UTC)
July 23, 2004 Link to this post Morning Movie Bonanza I think it's gonna be Movie Day here at HBO. There are quite a number of new films, available at other websites, ready for your downloading pleasure. RaiL sends word of a video he's made of his clan (Clan IP) showing off their Blood Gulch Multiplayer skillz - you can find a link to the 15.2 mb .mp4 on FileFront. beytah writes to point out Invisible People Suck, a 54.7 mb, 6:56-long QuickTime vid showing gameplay and situations, characterized by the quick-cut style made popular by music videos. And That Weasel lets us know that the next episode of Grunts are People Too!!! (Episode 7 - Mission Im-Chuck-Able) is now up, in both WMP9 and QuickTime6 formats, at the GaPT website, along with three MP3s of Mother's Tooth's original music (check the Episodes 6 and 7 pages for download links). There's more coming in a bit - but this should hold you for now, no? (Louis Wu 09:13:58 UTC)
July 23, 2004 Link to this post New Mombasa Classic is Out One of the most hotly-anticipated Halo Custom Edition maps to date, New Mombasa from Mrs Doublefire and crew, is now available for download. It's 9.6 mb of HaloCE goodness, and there are currently 8 EP Gamers servers running this map. (In fact, there are over 30 different servers hosting this map already, with two of them, at this hour, being full - a heartening situation.) Links for downloads, and some direct server IPs, can be found in this Gearbox Forum post from Mrs Doublefire. If you've held off downloading Halo CE, or if you've stayed away from the scene for a bit... now might be a good time to check out what's going on. (For those who've kept up on development of this map; this is New Mombasa Classic - it uses standard HaloPC weapons and vehicles. There is a version that will be integrated tightly with NiTrOuSoXiDe's Halo 2 mod, to provide an experience something like what was seen in the E3 2003 trailer... but this isn't that. It's stuff you're used to, in a gorgeous new setting. Go play.) Thanks to everyone who wrote - it looks like DHalo was first (though there were three within 30 seconds of him - yes, this one was HIGHLY anticipated :) ). (Louis Wu 08:47:59 UTC)
July 21, 2004 Link to this post Happy Happy Carnage Carnage Today is the 5th anniversary of the MacWorld Trailer, the day that Halo was introduced to the world (and the planet reverberated with the clang of dropping jaws). And yesterday was, incidentally, the 5th anniversary of this domain name (halo.bungie.org) - the website had been up at that point for almost two months, but it had been reachable at blam.bungie.org; we changed names (and post formats) when Halo was officially announced. (Why the 1-day offset? It's hard to tell this far down the road... but I think it's a mistake. :) ) The traditional gift for a 5-year anniversary is wood - I offer you the inside of my skull in celebration. We've come a long way, baby! (Louis Wu 11:06:08 UTC)
July 16, 2004 Link to this post I, Halo Coolness. If you're planning on seeing 'I, Robot', and your choices of venue include a Loews Cinema... pick that one. You'll get to see a snazzy new Halo 2 trailer. (Thanks to cman for the heads-up on the trailer, and Frankie for clarifying where you can see it.) Update: It's not just I, Robot - it's a number of hot films, including Spider-Man 2, The Village, King Arthur, Catwoman, and Alien vs Predator. You do have to see them in a Loews theatre, though. Thanks, Dark Helmet. Update 2: Whoa. Comments from Mat Noguchi, tools programmer at Bungie: One thing they didn't mention was the 5 days and 40 GB of raw data I had to render out at least three separate times. Plus the tools I had to write to handle movies bigger than 2 GB.
Random trivia for the hardcore: I rendered the movies at 1280x960, 30 fps. This is the best you will ever see Halo in motion. Well... if it never makes it to a PC, yeah. :) (You can currently get better framerates than that on Halo PC at 1600x1200 on an X800 or a 6800.) Thanks, Adam Daniel. (Louis Wu 16:29:25 UTC)
June 7, 2004 Link to this post The War of the Worlds, Halo-style Gre'Thor117 created a Halo movie for an English class; got a pretty good grade. It didn't meet our posting guidelines, but SancheztheLlama was kind enough to host it. It's 10.1 mb, in QuickTime format. Footage from the first two Halo 2 trailers, combined with overlain text and Edgen music. You can grab it on STL.com. Update: wow, looks like this was pretty popular. CJ has run out of bandwidth, and has taken it down. Sorry! (Louis Wu 12:41:26 UTC)
June 1, 2004 Link to this post Colorblind Hogmasta Chocobo writes to point out a movie of his hosted at GameTrailers - it's called Colorblind, and is available in streaming .mov format (or downloadable .mov and .wmv formats). It's gameplay, set to music. There's a forum thread on our forum if you want to leave him feedback. (Louis Wu 17:22:56 UTC)
June 1, 2004 Link to this post Halo 2 Music Transcription Rampancy.net has posted a transcription of the music from the Halo 2 announcement trailer, courtesy of Poop Scoop. 2.5 mb, due to the 8 pages of hi-res jpegs - and there's also a Finale Notepad file containing the whole score. Nice! (Louis Wu 16:01:33 UTC)
May 23, 2004 Link to this post Gamespot saw better than Halo at E3 Gamespot has posted its Best of E3 2004 awards. Halo picked up a 'Top 10 Trailers of E3' award for the press conference demo, and was a finalist in the Best Shooter and Best Xbox categories (beaten by MechAssault 2 both times), but was otherwise passed over. Interesting counterpoint with other gaming sites. Thanks, Jay. (Louis Wu 13:52:11 UTC)
May 22, 2004 Link to this post A Secret Character, eh? The Bungie Weekly Update is on our forum again this week. Frankie said they owed us because nobody believed that last week's was real. Personally, I think the naked pictures of Divine I slipped him at E3 were what tipped the scales. It's a pretty darn good update... there's animation stuff, slow-mo effects, vehicle physics, and the return of some of the material from the Halo Announcement Trailer. (Reinforcements are on the Spoke... so what's this about a pickle?) Check it out! (Louis Wu 00:13:48 UTC)
May 11, 2004 Link to this post And they just keep rolling in Another Direct Feed movie - pretty good quality. This one's from Gametrailers.com - thanks, Boneho Chane. WMP9, 14.3 mb. Update: And another from Gamershell - 13.8 mb (zipped - same 14.3 mb unzipped; it's probably the same film), HUGE pipe. Also WMP9. Thanks, Recoil. (Louis Wu 21:32:53 UTC)
May 5, 2004 Link to this post Jen Taylor needs YOU Interesting - Kris Kristensen, the director/producer of a film called 'Inheritance', is appealing to the Halo fanbase for a show of support. It seems some distributors are reluctant to take this film, because there are no 'stars' - so Kristensen is asking that folks who know about Jen Taylor, the voice of Cortana and a star of the film, to sign this petition, affirming that there's an audience for this. The forum post has links to film trailers, so go take a look! (Louis Wu 18:48:46 UTC)
April 25, 2004 Link to this post When Comics Go Flash Subzero Rivalries has gone Flash. Check out the trailer for this newly-remade comic; more strips coming soon. Thanks, MarkHawk. (Louis Wu 18:36:39 UTC)
April 11, 2004 Link to this post Elite Battles MasterNeoChief has created a mod called Halo Elite Battles; you play as an Elite, and your job is to wipe out the Human forces. (There's even a destructible Pelican mod.) A trailer can be found in this thread, the mod itself in this one (both at Halomods). If the links don't work, try again later; they seem to be up and down. Check it out... it looks pretty cool! (Louis Wu 19:14:42 UTC)
March 31, 2004 Link to this post HUDless Movie JM made a HUDless 'trailer' for Halo, and posted it (in two sizes) over at Halomods. It's not very big, so take a look! (Louis Wu 00:13:09 UTC)
March 28, 2004 Link to this post The Lord of the Ring We're tight on bandwidth, but that doesn't mean we're OUT of bandwidth. Thanks to Mythica.org (which is having minor connection problems at the moment) and HaloNational (nof, you rock!), we have a pair of mirrors for you for The Lord of the Ring, a movie made by Mark Gursoy, and turned in by Ben Roth. It's just under 3 minutes long, 372x279, 11.2 mb in QuickTime format. It's a very nice trailer - nice timing, nice choices for characters, and classy composition. Ben says Mark did this to learn Premiere - I'd say I'd love to see his more polished work, because this shows real promise! (Louis Wu 19:24:23 UTC)
March 26, 2004 Link to this post First Strike - major progress Last night, Crispy Spartan posted Update 6 for the First Strike mod. It contains information about the modeling they've been doing (what vehicles and weapons are coming along), but the big news is the need for voice talent; there's a list of all parts needed, and an address to mail an application to if you're interested in playing one of them. There's also a trailer (2 min, 5-27 mb depending on format, spoilers if you're worried) to show you where they stand. They're hoping that Update 7 will be displayed on their new website (so new it's not resolving for me yet)... (Louis Wu 12:33:17 UTC)
March 19, 2004 Link to this post E3 2003 pics at Halo Universe Marc, from Halo Universe, writes to say that they've uploaded some screens from the E3 2003 Halo 2 Demo trailer. In his words "for all who doesn't know the movie a duty and for all others a nice reminder..." Go remember! (Louis Wu 17:23:27 UTC)
March 1, 2004 Link to this post Links, links, and more links Wow. In the last month or so, a lot of links have been forwarded to us about Halo-related websites out there. I THINK I've culled all of them from our mail - but I might have missed one or two; apologies if that's true. - Forums:
- Clan sites:
- Tournaments:
- General/News sites:
Whew! We're really sorry for the huge delay here. (Please don't write, asking us when we'll actually get these added to the Links page - I don't have an answer for that question.) (Louis Wu 12:53:51 UTC)
January 25, 2004 Link to this post Another pair, set to classics Yesterday, we posted the movie Cheers, a stock Halo music vid with decent timing. Almost a thousand of you have grabbed a copy, and we haven't gotten any death threats or hatemail about it... so we're going to continue with the plan; today, we've got a pair of these for you. They're both put together from Halo 2 trailer footage, and both nicely synchronized to their respective music. Summer Wind, submitted by Fortune a couple of weeks ago, is set to (not surprisingly) Frank Sinatra's 'Summer Wind', and weighs in at 4.8 mb in WMP7 format. The Boys Are Back was submitted by Erik Vogt (who previously created Wonderboy, no longer available at its original location, but which can be found here), and it uses the Thin Lizzy song with the same title as its soundtrack. (Eric offered a larger, less 'small and gritty' version... but I think this one fits nicely.) It's in QuickTime format, and is a lightweight 6.6 mb. I THINK that clears out the queue of movies I felt we could host, despite their not meeting the letter of our Movie Posting Guidelines... but you never know, there might be more. (Louis Wu 13:24:39 UTC)
January 20, 2004 Link to this post Sponsors-only goodies at RvB gutupio pointed out new content (sponsors-only) at RedvsBlue.com. There's a rejected version of the SpikeTV Video Game Awards trailer, and scripts for the first two Season 2 episodes. If you've tossed 'em a few bucks, jump on and grab this stuff! (Louis Wu 11:50:03 UTC)
