Speedrunning Halo, revisited
A few days ago, Åstro dropped into our forum to suggest that he was trying to speed-run Halo again. He was shooting for a 90 minute full runthrough, on Legendary. Yesterday, we got mail from Rory Hartley and Bill Copeland, a pair in Calgary, Canada that have done a full run-through on Easy:

Pillar of Autumn5:45343 Guilty Spark8:48
Halo15:28The Library15:34
Truth & Reconciliation14:45Two Betrayals13:48
Silent Cartographer10:02Keyes10:00
Assault on the Control Room11:40The Maw9:52

Total time there: 110 minutes, 52 seconds. (I'd guess this means Åstro's estimate might be a little optimistic...) Rory and Bill weren't counting beginning and ending cutscenes, and they skipped all skippable cutscenes. (It's unclear what rules Åstro and company are playing by.) Could this be the start of some friendly competition? (Louis Wu 12:52:08 UTC)

...a good night.
Well, Christmas is nearly over... but it's still so beautiful here (it's been snowing since 5 am) that there's no way I can clear out the backlog tonight. I'm headed back to the fire, to sip eggnog and enjoy family conversation... fanfiction and artwork will get put up in the morning. Peace to all!

The snow comes down...
HBO Headquarters, snapped outside the server center at roughly 8:40 pm local time (1:40 am UTC) - it's showing no sign of stopping...

A new challenge
Regarding the new images posted at Tru7h and Reconciliation yesterday - Dave Candland has thrown down the gauntlet, with respect to this picture:

Regarding scrn_084.jpg, you're going to have to scrutinize very closely to find this one. The hippo was all over the place. This image can only be found in one location. I'll be surprised if this is discovered by Easter.

Will it be you that finds it? Where will you look? The race is on! (Louis Wu 18:38:23 UTC)

Halo Soundtrack?
Woohoo! Kudos to Frogblast, who noticed what is likely the Halo Soundtrack on the Bungie Webcam:

Now all we need is the Bungie Store to reopen... Update: Tumbleweed points out that this is NOT the Halo Soundtrack, after all... but the Xbox Soundtrack 1, available since November 13. (We reported on this back on November 7 - shame on me for not recognizing the picture! (Louis Wu 19:58:52 UTC)

Master Chief Icons for you
Liquidex, in answer to a forum request for Halo icons, has created a nice Master Chief version (and blown it up for detail):

Except for the spelling error, it's perfect (and if you're using it on your desktop, you won't want the words anyway). Thanks, Liquidex! (Louis Wu 15:22:51 UTC)

Merry Christmas!

M E R R Y   C H R I S T M A S !

One Ghost Open Sleigh, by Shi Kai Wang

(Okay, okay, so we stole it from Bungie - but hey, they've recycled it themselves!)

From the HBO crew and our families, to you and yours, we wish you the merriest of holiday seasons. Pax.

We'll be back updating on Wednesday, the 26th.

How consistent IS Bungie?
Knight Premier writes to suggest that there's a clear relationship between the 7th Column logo and 343 Guilty Spark, a character from Halo. (As well, of course, as the obvious relationship between Sparky and the Marathon logo...) You make up your own mind. (He's modified the 7th Column logo a bit, to help you out.)

More comparisons...
Heh - people see funny things. :) A month ago, we wondered whether Captain Keyes (as rendered in the game) might bear some resemblance to Joe Staten... now septimus prime, over on the Marathon's Story page forum, is wondering if the storyboard version of the Captain (visible on Bungie's Tru7h and Reconciliation site) might not be modeled after the Story page founder, Hamish Sinclair, himself.

separated at birth?

You be the judge. (Louis Wu 21:18:52 UTC)

More Marathon
B-Sharp noticed that the captain of the Pillar of Autumn has a Marathon symbol on his chest. Matches the one outside the ship nicely... While we're here, does anyone else think that the captain and Joe Staten could have made it into Spy Magazine's Separated at Birth column?

Just curious... Update: TomeOne did a little enlarging and clarifying, and ended up with this. (Louis Wu 12:22:48 UTC)

Command THIS!
Occasionally, mention is made of Halo's ability to take absurdly high-resolution screenshots. We thought, when we saw the 1920x1440 shots posted by Daily Radar in March, we thought we were seeing an example of this. How silly we were... Bungie has kindly sent along an absurdly high-resolution shot - the original (440K) is 2664x2562 - and this one is obviously shrunk from its original size. Here's the new yellow commander, in all his multi-toothed glory... for those who want more manageable sizes, we've created a 1024x768 version (92K) and a 1280x1024 version (178K) - both padded with black to make the non-standard size fit your desktop. Enjoy!

Mmm... little green men
Thanks to TomeOne, who noticed these two little images over on Mehve's Aerie, the personal site of Lorraine Reyes, a Bungie artist currently working on Phoenix.

Apologies to Mehve for any image degradation introduced in the quest for fast-loading pages - the originals can still be found on her site. (Louis Wu 19:36:10 UTC)

Goodies for you
arcarsenal sends in a couple of files you might be interested in - the first is the small icon you see here, for use as a system icon (you can either grab it right off this page, or download a stuffed (mac-format) folder (2k) that uses it as a custom icon). Additionally, he's modified the Mac version of the SETI 3.0.3 client - you can see an example of the end result here (46K .gif), and download the client itself here (205K .sit). Halo Empire enhances Xbox image
SOKAR, from Halo Empire, writes that they've done some image enhancement on the TV screen shown in the Seattle Times pic, and gotten a clearer view of the Marine. To my eyes, it's closest to a screenshot that came out in PC Gamer UK last July... so I guess that's a pretty standard pose.

One of these days, maybe we'll even find out what those guys were looking at! (Louis Wu 14:17:04 UTC)

Heeere, Santa Santa Santa
eldar-colonel writes to tell us that he's put up a stocking for Santa... and thoughtfully saved Santa a bit of work by filling it himself. You can see the original at Halo HQ. He told us that it might go with our Christmas decorations... it looks like Wirehead did a bit of editing before I got to it.

NextGen shot a mirror of a PCG shot
Seems we flubbed. The screenshot we mentioned last night does NOT show a gun we've never seen before... in fact, it's not even a shot we've never seen before. The same shot, mirrored, was in the PC Gamer spread recently upped to the R.net Hotline server. Here they are, side-by-side:

PC Gamer, August 2000NextGen, August 2000

If you're not convinced by the thumbnails, check out the full versions above. We hope to bring you better scans of the PC Gamer material soon. An interesting tidbit: both mags are part of the Imagine family, which would explain why an image that didn't show up in any released movie is in both places. (Louis Wu 13:57:26 UTC)

Close, but no cee-gar
That Wirehead has sharp eyes. He noticed that the thumbnail included in last week's PC Gamer buyout analysis was close, but not the same as, the thumbnail included in last month's Newsweek article. Seems both groups had access to the base material (probably the E3 trailer). Here's the two shots, for you to compare on your own:

Newsweek, May 29PC Gamer, June 19

Soon, we hope to see the entire trailer! (Louis Wu 13:00:41 UTC)

Seven Day Poll ends with interesting results

Now... some may see this as an overwhelming mandate by our visitors to bag the idea of a poll altogether. However, in the interest of building a better site, we've decided to run another one, anyway. We'd like to know when you entered the Bungie universe. Thanks for your participation! (Louis Wu 17:41:29 UTC)

New Halo screenshot!!!

Major kudos to Hamish Sinclair, maintainer of the Marathon's Story and Pathways Into Darkness pages, who sent us in a Halo screenshot to celebrate our newly opened Halo FAQ. We've never seen it before but he claims it is old. Check out what he has to say. (Wirehead 13:29:41 UTC)
