We're not saying that they've decided on Chicago... just that they've decided, and Chicago is a good bet. Matt confirmed that his visit to Chicago was (in part) to scope out launch party sites... and he says he'll be making an announcement tomorrow, barring catastrophe. Dang... I was really hoping for New York. (Louis Wu 00:57:52 UTC)
September 6, 2001 Link to this post Xbox ads on Canadian MTv awards tonight Thanks to Harry Al-Shakarchi, who noted on our forum that the first Xbox ads will air tonight, possibly in Canada only, during the 2001 MTv Video Music Awards on MuchMusic. (They were made by a Canadian ad company, and the announcement was made by Microsoft Canada... so there's no guarantee (and, indeed, no evidence) that they'll air in the US as well. There's a bit more info at X-Boxed.com. Any Canadian readers wanna tape this? (Louis Wu 17:32:10 UTC)
September 1, 2001 Link to this post Chicago on the short list More info from Matt, totally different subject - while nothing has been decided yet, Matt lets readers of the R.net forum know that he's off to Chicago next week to (among other things) scope out a particular site for suitability for the Halo Launch Party... in his words: Expect an announcement one way or another next week.
I'm still holding out for New York... (Louis Wu 00:31:46 UTC)
July 28, 2001 Link to this post A day playing Halo Sometimes, being part of a big organization means that things happen you don't plan on. This message was posted on the Usenet newsgroup comp.sys.mac.games.action yesterday - apparently, someone got into the beta testing lab, but wasn't required to sign an NDA, and took the opportunity to pass along the info he learned. It's an interesting read. (Thank goodness Google has DejaNews up and running again...) Thanks to TomeOne for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 09:55:05 UTC)
June 9, 2001 Link to this post Fan Conducted Interview Posted Attention, KMart Shoppers... We're happy to announce that we have a special treat for you - the questions you submitted oh so many weeks ago (okay, it's only been about a month) have been answered! And they're not just throw-em-some-scraps answers, either... there's some honest-to-goodness meat on them thar bones. I won't waste any more of your time - go read 'em for yourself. (Louis Wu 02:12:46 UTC)
May 29, 2001 Link to this post Best Action Game? Thanks to Jan Louw, who noticed that the Game Critics Awards site has posted its nominations for its Best of E3 Awards. Halo is up for Best Action Game. Awards are announced on June 18. Good luck, Halo! (Louis Wu 21:32:05 UTC)
May 15, 2001 Link to this post YA Poll Smash That Gothmog - he keeps on top of the polls, he does. He just pointed out a poll over at the Official Xbox Magazine site: With so many amazing Xbox games already announced, we can't decide what to put on our first cover. Which of the following would make you buy our premiere issue?
One of the options is 'Halo exclusive - Best-looking console game ever.' It's currently trailing the '50 reasons to buy an Xbox' option... you know what to do. (Louis Wu 18:50:54 UTC)
May 6, 2001 Link to this post A worthwhile read on PC/Xbox differences Over the past year or so, since Halo for the Xbox was announced, a large number of people have publicly worried that 'the Xbox is just a PC'. Response to this has been either agreement, or some vague 'it's completely different, due to the way the Xbox puts the pieces together'... but for the first time, a poster to our forum, katokop1, has laid out some of the real differences between PCs and the Xbox, and explained why some of the reasoning of the first group is faulty. Check it out - we may have to add this info to the FAQ. (Louis Wu 17:40:56 UTC)
April 18, 2001 Link to this post No Halo Update, wedding instead Matt Soell dropped into our forum to announce that most of the Bungie crew would be heading back to Chicago in the next day or so to attend the wedding of Lorraine Reyes and Rob McLees... and therefore, he'd be unable to post a Halo update this week. We'll take this opportunity to wish Lorraine and Rob all the best! (Louis Wu 20:47:23 UTC)
April 2, 2001 Link to this post Set sail for a different kind of booty Not Halo news, but new games don't come out of Bungie all that often... Pimps at Sea was announced recently. The site contains screenshots, a description of gameplay, and a large (100 MB) movie giving viewers a peek at the making of the game. Worth a look! (bungie.org has opened a fansite for the game, though it's rather sparse at the moment...) (Louis Wu 02:15:30 UTC)
February 16, 2001 Link to this post interesting timing on domain registration As noted by ax on our forums (and on the Marathon's Story page), the registration date of the domain bungiestudios.com is either a curious coincidence... or a bitter statement. 24 hours after the announcement of the Microsoft acquisition (and, therefore, 24 hours after the change from Bungie Software to Bungie Studios)... you decide. (Louis Wu 14:11:32 UTC)
February 2, 2001 Link to this post WSJ looks at Xbox From Lophan, maintainer of our sister site myth.bungie.org, comes this snippet from a Wall Street Journal article on Wednesday, entitled "How Microsoft Hopes to Win With Xbox": First, it's taking out it's checkbook. Since march 2000, when it announced plans to enter the multibillion-dollar video-game industry, Microsoft has bought two small game developers, Bungie Software Products Corp. and Digital Anvil Inc., for what some analysts estimate is more than $20 million.
Well, that's a bit less than we thought the sum would have been... but it's interesting to see this hit the mainstream press. We'd have thought the spin would have been the half-billion they're spending on advertising... (Ding 05:03:19 UTC)
January 13, 2001 Link to this post First fanfest reports come in Thanks to Appleicious, who posted a Fanfest report to our forum. Halo details included: - In [the] keynote, we got to see about ten exclusivescreenshots from the "old" Halo engine (exclusive = never before seen).
- the Halo multiplayer design doc is almost finished and work on the network code will begin in February.
There's lots more, so read the whole thing for yourselves! Also, codetoad posted another report over at R.net, with these tantalizing tidbits: - there's 3 weapons finalized in halo
- there will be a "halo invasion of the media" (due to MS money) very soon, and we won't have to worry about getting info on halo, because it will be ALL AROUND us. (Could this mean perhaps there is truth to the superbowl wild rumor? :-P)
Again, there is much more to that report, as well. As mentioned in both, Phoenix was officially announced... though there isn't much info about it yet, and won't be for a while. Ack. Why are you reading this? Go read those reports! (Louis Wu 11:09:28 UTC)
December 12, 2000 Link to this post cooperative play on solo levels? Bitner Blitz! Nathan Bitner returns with another posting spree. One postcaught our attention. It concerns cooperative play on Halo's solo levels. "We REALLY like cooperative play on solo levels. REALLY like it. A lot."
But as Nathan says "Don't count on ANYTHING until Bungie announces it". (Ding 19:26:21 UTC)
December 3, 2000 Link to this post Island Four returns! Nathan Bitner (former Producer and Creative Developer of Halo) sent us along this cryptic note: I haven't forgot about you or your gifts, but have been waiting for theannouncement that I made at approximately 6 a.m., Sunday Morning, December3, 2000. The message was sent only to Hamish, but you are the only other "entity" whoknows it's coming (bungie.org that is). The secret of Island Four, of Sharon and the Burger Pimp, of Cortana even(maybe), will "soon" be revealed. Feel free to post the message to yoursite and pass it around. Hamish should have it up shortly. Best Wishes and Peace to all of You, Nathan
If you're confused then head on over to the Marathon's Story page to read Nathan's announcement. A new gaming company called "Island Four" devoted to games thattell stories. And what's with that secret email address?! (Ding 15:56:30 UTC)
November 17, 2000 Link to this post bungie.net gets a new interface designer A warm welcome to David Candland, the newest member of Bungie's online team - he's officially "Interface Designer", so he'll likely be working on making bungie.net more friendly to everyone. That doesn't have IMMEDIATE relevance to Halo fans... but when Halo DOES get to the point where bungie.net is important, what's in place will help a lot. Good luck, David! (You can read his announcement on bungie.net right now.) (Louis Wu 14:48:23 UTC)
November 15, 2000 Link to this post Seamus Blackley talks to Gamespot Australia Seamus Blackley, that whacky engineer behind the Xbox, talked to Gamespot Australia about the Xbox recently... he's really pushing the idea that this is a gaming machine ONLY. However, for folks who were afraid that they'd be limited to TV resolutions... But yeah, television is one we're not too fond of either, in terms of standards. So we output pretty much every video signal known to man.
That should cover your average gamer, eh? And in case you thought old Seamus didn't have a sense of humor: We actually toyed with the idea at the (US, X-Box unveiling) Game Developer's Conference, when we announced X-Box on stage, to have a button in one of our demos that went through a Blue Screen. Just for fun, because it would cause everybody to have a heart attack. And then say "Oh, just joking!" and then go on with it.
Swing by and read the whole interview... the guy's enthusiasm is infectious. (There's a brief mention of 'Gigabit Ethernet in the Xbox' in the context of LAN play... but check this story out for a more interesting rumor.) (Louis Wu 00:23:46 UTC)
October 26, 2000 Link to this post Weapons Factory a Halo mod As Mikkel Eriksen says, it's not just the Strike Force guys going at it! Weapons Factory, a modmaking team that focuses on multi-class, team-based play, has already announced plans for a Halo mod. The interest is building... (Louis Wu 00:55:29 UTC)
October 21, 2000 Link to this post iHalo Marine Corps back online Thanks to Fire Phoenix, who announced (via our forum) that the iHalo Marine Corps is officially online now. Check it out (fp highly suggests using IE only)! (Louis Wu 20:02:14 UTC)
October 20, 2000 Link to this post DR UK says MS wants a piece of PS2's action In other Xbox news, Daily Radar UK is reporting that Microsoft is planning to announce the final design of the Xbox on October 26, timed to coincide with the PlayStation 2 launch in the US. Thunder-stealing, anyone? (Louis Wu 00:37:17 UTC)
September 27, 2000 Link to this post Two more nVidia mirrors pop up Two more mirrors for the nVidia movie have popped up: Halo Center now has a copy, and so does HaloCenter.de (no relation to the American site). In fact... it doesn't look like we've ever seen HaloCenter.de before, so we'll take this opportunity to announce it. Looks like it's a GameszPlanet affiliate. (Louis Wu 14:20:51 UTC)
September 21, 2000 Link to this post MS Product Planner says MS titles TBA later Thanks to Jon Kimmich, product planner for MS Games, who wrote to say that the reason Halo was left off the list of announced titles was because This announcement was just to announce "3rd party" (ie. non-MS) publishers. All titles published by MS are "1st-party" titles, and we'll make some announcements about them at a later date.
Thanks, Jon... we're all breathing a sigh of relief here! ;) (Louis Wu 11:53:30 UTC)
September 20, 2000 Link to this post www.xbox.com is alive again Looks like we jumped too fast. In time for the 7:00 pm GMT announcements planned today, www.xbox.com is up again. Still waiting... (Thanks to Cosmic Muffet for the heads-up.) Pax. (Crux Fidelis 18:02:58 UTC)
September 14, 2000 Link to this post HaloPort goes live... maybe A rather spartan email from Pureblood announces HaloPort... which is, apparently, a new Halo site. I say 'apparently' because it requires a username/password combo to get past the opening screen... but provides no way to obtain one. More as we know it. Pax. (Crux Fidelis 08:54:03 UTC)
September 8, 2000 Link to this post Mac Halo to be ported by Tamte Congrats to Isolder, who noticed (before I had a chance to find it myself) a tidbit in the October issue of MacAddict about Peter Tamte: A new company, headed by former Bungie vice president (and previous MacSoft executive director) Peter Tamte, has taken charge of bringing Microsoft's key games, including Bungie's titles, to our platform.
I suppose this makes sense = Tamte's new company, and its mission, was announced at MacWorld during the same speech in which Fries and Seropian asserted that Halo would be coming to the Mac - it simply never occurred to us (or to Isolder, apparently). I guess I'd always thought BUNGIE would port it, once they were done with the Xbox version. Just goes to show you... be careful about the assumptions you make. (Louis Wu 13:15:15 UTC)
