Halo Soundtrack announced on Xbox.com
Xbox.com has put up an announcement page for the Halo Soundtrack. There are three tracks listed... but they're the same tracks released a couple of months ago by Team Xbox (and later Xbox.com, on the Easter Egg page for the WinAmp skin). Still, it's nice to see the press coverage for what will undoubtedly be a killer release! (Louis Wu 20:05:41 UTC)

The Bad: release date is scheduled for June 11 "at music retailers nationwide". For more details, check out Music4Games.net. (Louis Wu 20:18:24 UTC)

Xbox price drop imminent?
Reuters is reporting that a market analyst is predicting a $100 price cut on the Xbox to be announced as early as E3 (in less than 3 weeks). That should jump-start new sales... thanks to Dave Calotta for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 20:20:58 UTC)

Gameplay Tips goes live (finally)
At long last, HBO is proud to announce... the opening of the Gameplay Tips section! Great thanks go out to CYBRFRK, who coded the whole mess... there's not a lot of content there yet, but we're counting on you to change that. Have a gameplay tip? Submit it! We'll clean it up a bit, and toss it into the database... in no time, this collection should be a repository of the considerable wealth of knowledge evinced by the fine visitors of this site. Halo 2 announcement at E3?
News catch-up... Peter Haughie points out that the latest issue of Xgamer, a UK Xbox mag, has some speculation about a Halo 2 announcement at E3 next month (they state that 'an inside source has confirmed that Halo 2 exists'):

The timing is everything. Xbox is off to a rip-roaring start but Microsoft needs to keep the momentum going. And what better way to keep the good times rolling than by announcing the follow-up to the game that's got people pulling Xboxes off the shelves as fast as their hands can move? That announcement will take place at videogaming's biggest industry event of the year - E3 in Los Angeles, between May 21st and 24th.

The rest of the article is pretty interesting, as well - once it's off the shelves, we'll be sure to put it up in our Press Scans section! (Louis Wu 17:32:40 UTC)

New Movies section comes online
It's nowhere near as finished as I'd like... but it's functional, and it's MUCH more finished than the old version. For those people looking for Halo Movies, we'd like to announce our newly-overhauled Halo Movies Section. More features will be coming soon (sorting, searching, and so on) - but for now, hopefully you'll find an up-to-date, organized list of Halo movies to be useful. There are lots of new things - many movies have been converted to different formats, to make them more accessible (usually that means smaller) - and several movies that have been missing for ages have now been found. Browse away! (Louis Wu 20:33:58 UTC)

DirectX on a Mac... who'da thunk it?
Apologies for the slow news service - major connectivity problems yesterday has led to quite a bit of cleanup today - not much time for Halo. However, this is big news: According to this MacWorld.uk article, a UK company has announced a DirectX solution for the Macintosh - which should make the porting of games (potentially even Halo, though maybe the timing is off) to the Mac a whole lot easier. Thanks to Miguel Chavez for the heads-up on our forum. Woohoo! (Louis Wu 15:30:50 UTC)

Renegade Theatre Strikes Again
This came in yesterday - but yesterday was insane. (Heck, the whole WEEK's been insane...) Mark Mendenhall, the guy behind Hurricane Halo, put together a little warning video, called 'If Halo Were Sponsored by Ford...' It's been crunched down to a puny 3.5 mb, so I've tossed it up into mythica.org's nearly unlimited fountain of bandwidth - if anyone wants to mirror it, we'd be happy to announce it. Sure to bring a smile to your face... unless you own Ford stock. Update: Alan Wu sends word that he's mirrored the film, along with a re-encoded version in .wmv format (1.7 mb), at Project MJOLNIR. Halo 'announcement' this week?
Apologies for the news blackout of the last 36 hours - HBO HQ was host to a 15-player lanfest yesterday (guests started arriving at 9 am, we closed the last door around 11 pm), so updating took a second seat. :) In that time, Computer Gaming World columnist Jeff Green put up an article at Gamers.com in which he (once again) called into question the PC versions of Halo. Bungie's own Matt Soell commented on Mr. Green's words on our forum this morning... but we're still intrigued about the Halo 'announcement' happening at a Microsoft party in San Francisco this week. More details when we find them... (Thanks to Cesar Berardini, of TeamXbox, who provided us with the first heads-up on this issue.) (Louis Wu 17:24:45 UTC)

Goodbye, Rep...
The (temporary) End of an Era. Vector40 announced that The Repertory is down, until the silliness invoked by his web host can be fixed. It'll be back... but in these times of high-bandwidth-need... we'll miss her. (Louis Wu 00:01:59 UTC)

Window for Maw 700 Contest 2 closed
And the doors are officially... Closed. The Second Contest of the Maw 700 is now over, but for the judging... we'll be poring over the entries this evening, and will announce the winner either later tonight or tomorrow. We have a total of three entries (we probably would have had four, had it not been for Frogblast's injury), and I can tell you already, I like 'em all. :) (Louis Wu 00:03:50 UTC)

Thumb Bandits fingers Halo
Naligun points out that the UK TV show Thumb Bandits finished its season on Friday, and announced that Halo was the best game of the entire series! It was, in their words, "Outrageously good. This game has everything. Utter, unmitigated genius." High praise, indeed! (Louis Wu 14:15:00 UTC)

Hmph... East coast is still cooler.
Lots of cool stuff has just appeared on Bungie.net... Top story is the announcement of the E3 Fanfest/Seventh Column Convocation, complete with Halo tournament and "Bungie-style tomfoolery". The Truth and Reconciliation has posted an interview with Bungie artist and Covenant sculptor Juan Ramirez. Speaking of which, the winner of said Covenant sculpture turns out to be Tom Van Sinden, known around here as mnemesis. Congratulations! (Count Zero 16:56:04 UTC)

Is Halo IGN's Game of the Year? (Yes.)
Spotted on IGN was this article on the Japanese release of Halo, which contains this tidbit:

... would go without Halo, IGN`s game of the year for 2001...

I can't tell if this has already been announced to IGN Insiders (I don't have an account) or it's an editorial slip of the tongue. Any subscribers around here? Update: Deimos found confirmation of this on Microsoft's site. Congratulations to the Halo team! (Count Zero 21:51:49 UTC)

Halo in Japan - April 25
The Japanese Halo Release has been announced: April 25th is the big day. (It says that here, in the press release on the Xbox Japan site... but it's in Japanese.) Cover art isn't up yet... but word from Gothmog (Halo product planner) is that it'll be different than the US/European box. Not quite in time for the Xbox launch there... but not too far off! Bungie does well in IGDCA nominations
Thanks to Aginor, who pointed out that the International Game Developers Choice Awards nominees were announced today - Bungie nominations are as follows: Halo for Game of the Year, Marty O'Donnell & team for Excellence in Audio, and Jason Jones & team for Excellence in Programming. Winners will be announced on March 21, during the Game Developers Conference. Kudos all 'round! (Louis Wu 17:32:59 UTC)

Halo finalist for 8 AIAS awards
Rather than reword it badly, I'm just gonna shamelessly suck text from the AIAS site:

The Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences (AIAS) today announced the finalists for the 5th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards. Halo: Combat Evolved for the Xbox, developed by Bungie and published by Microsoft, and ICO for the Playstation 2 (PS2), developed by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. and published by Sony Computer Entertainment America, lead the field with finalist nods in 8 categories each, including nominations for Game of the Year, Console Game of the Year and Console Action/Adventure Game of the Year.

The 8 categories that Halo is a finalist in are: Game of the Year, Console Game of the Year, Console Action/Adventure Game of the Year, Innovation in Console Gaming, Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction, Outstanding Achievement in Game Play Engineering, Outstanding Achievement in Visual Engineering, and Outstanding Achievement in Game Design. (Interestingly enough, Halo wasn't a finalist in any Sound or Story categories...) Looks like even the academics like this game! (Thanks to Gothmog for the heads-up.) (Louis Wu 01:47:50 UTC)

PC Zone rumors a'flyin'...
Oh, man... Catachan, of Battleground: Halo, got his copy of PC Zone magazine today... and it contained some eyebrow-raising news:

Our guess is that Halo for the PC will be out next autumn, probably to coincide with the announcement of Halo 2, which is already being worked on and a cert to arrive on Xbox first yet again.

This is the part where I remind you that until this is confirmed by someone at BUNGIE, it's just a rumor... and an unlikely one, at that. (I'm not gonna flat-out ridicule it, because other, stranger, things have come to pass... but recent comments from the Bungie team would suggest that the 'already being worked on' bit was created from whole cloth.) More as we learn it... thanks to Halifax for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 16:18:29 UTC)

Launch Party reports start
The first few reports have trickled in from the Launch Party last night (folks having too much fun to report back, it seems!) - overall response seems to be pretty positive. jaslak summed up the general attitude towards Bungie's willingness to do stuff like this:

It was an impressive sight, to see bungie employees and fans talking one on one. I have yet to see another company as cool as Bungie.

Lots of little details, including the unveiling (at least verbally) of the new Truth and Reconciliation site Bungie's putting up (you almost got the name right, Theocracity)... read the reports to soak it up. An Xbox and several copies of Halo (as well as t-shirts) were given away... and several people (from Marty O'Donnell to TeamXbox) were conducting interviews. No7orious mentioned on our forum that the only new media he saw was a sort of training video (sounds like fun, though) - but we have yet to hear from the Bungie guys themselves.

General announcement: if you were at the party, and would like your thoughts/comments preserved for posterity on the coverage page, drop us a line - we'll set you up with access so you can post there. (This goes for Bungie employees, as well, if you're so inclined.) A search function will be added soon, so that finding that tidbit you wanted will be simple. For those of us not at the party... looks like we missed a good one! (Louis Wu 16:12:58 UTC)
