During the beta test of Halo PC, there were a lot of HBO forum regulars recounting game highlights on our forum, and talk turned to whether or not HBO would host an 'Official HBO Server'. At the time, we were vague; a Halo server requires a Windows-based operating system, and bungie.org (and the hosting company that handles it) is Mac/Unix only. However, thanks to the generous folks over at GameDaemons.net, we're happy to say there WILL be an official HBO Halo PC server, open to the public. These guys are pros... I've done a little research, and the word on the street is, if you want a fast, low-ping server, you can't do any better than Game Daemons. We've written up a short press release with basic information about the server and how it will be administered. We're looking forward to fragging you! (Louis Wu 11:50:52 UTC)
September 19, 2003 Link to this post Benefit tourney prizes announced A week ago, we mentioned a benefit tournament that will take place in LA on the 24th (this coming Wednesday). Shrike came back today to report that prizes have been announced. Man, I want to enter, just so I can lose really bad and win the Mary Jane journal! Check it out. (Louis Wu 21:27:01 UTC)
September 19, 2003 Link to this post The Silent Cartographers Over at Subnova, there's a quiet, unassuming little note with a title reading 'The Silent Cartographers'. Turns out, this is an announcement of a new Halo PC mapmaking group, made up of Subnova members (which means Bungie old-schoolers). They're not currently accepting applications (though they will be next month), and the website has no info except a logo... but you should expect big things from these people. Remember: they have inside connections. They've been playing with stuff for weeks now. (Months?) (Louis Wu 20:46:15 UTC)
September 19, 2003 Link to this post The Junkyard gives away schwag Eep! Forgot to mention this a few days ago... but on Tuesday, the Junkyard announced its winner of the long-running 'Guess the Release Date' contest (first announced back on July 29, 2002). Congratulations to CheeseChick for picking September 15, 2003 as the date Halo PC went gold. TankRamp (of Battleground: Halo) and LegacyX4 pulled in the second and third prizes, respectively. (Louis Wu 14:12:45 UTC)
September 15, 2003 Link to this post They're back... The gold MCs are back on the front of Gearbox's site - this time for real, it seems. Woohoo! This would suggest that an announcement is imminent... (Louis Wu 10:42:34 UTC)
September 12, 2003 Link to this post Official UK Halo site - with a date? Interesting - did someone jump the gun, or is this just another instance of not enough information? Stuntmutt points out a new Microsoft site in the UK, advertising Halo PC... and it's got, emblazoned across the top in bright letters, 'Available 10 October 2003'. Is this the official date Gearbox said they'll announce in 1-4 days... or is this just some web dev's idea of filling up the space? (Louis Wu 13:04:01 UTC)
September 10, 2003 Link to this post Huge Halo 2 tourney in the works Wow, THIS is confidence. SaNd TrOoPeR, of ThinkGeekness.com, stopped by our forum last night to announce a Halo 2 tournament scheduled for next summer. Top prize is planned at $25,000, and they're hoping for 1500-2000 players. Wonga. Check their Halo 2 Championship page for details. (Louis Wu 15:44:25 UTC)
September 3, 2003 Link to this post Hosting, and not hosting... Okay, it's been a while since I've found time to rummage through the submissions - and for that, I apologize. Lots of people have been waiting for substantial chunks of time to see their work displayed for the Halo community... and I've been lax about getting it up there. However, our uploads folders (and email) are filled with material which we have to toss, as well... and this makes me sad. Some of it is just that folks aren't paying attention to the existing guidelines... but some of it is that we've never outlined what isn't acceptable. So I'm doing that now. First up, some rules to remember: - Movies that are submitted in WMP9 version ONLY (that is, without a corresponding MPEG, or AVI, or whatever) will not be posted. This rule is in effect until Microsoft releases WMP9 codecs for operating systems other than their own.
- Movies that are simply collections of tricks, or that are rehashes of existing films we've posted in the past, will not be posted. You're welcome to find your own hosting, and send us a link; we're happy to announce it to the community. We cannot provide you with bandwidth, however.
- Items that are uploaded to our ftp or http uploads folders without attribution will not be posted. If we don't know who you are... we're not putting your work up. We'd like an email address (even if you don't want it listed with your work; we're happy to withhold it)... but we NEED a name, at least.
And while we're at it... uploading halo.jpg or readme.doc or description.txt is sort of silly... remember that our Wallpaper section has almost 1000 items in it, Miscellaneous Art isn't far behind; name your work (AND its accompanying text file) appropriately. Thanks. Now as for things that we've not addressed yet: - Red vs Blue artwork (wallpaper, disc covers, logos, you name it) are really not appropriate for HBO. RvB has their own website, and a forum to post tribute work. Please use it.
- Windows executables will no longer be accepted. Once upon a time, we took some mini-games folks created... but the last item we tried to test totally hosed the Windows emulator I had running here, and in today's virus-strewn world, it's simply not worth our time or effort to ensure that your mini-game is safe for public consumption. Please don't upload them - we won't post them.
Material listed above - the stuff we won't post - is simply discarded; we probably won't contact you to tell you we're not posting it. (In the vast majority of cases, we CAN'T contact you, because you haven't bothered to include an email address.) If you feel that you've uploaded something that we SHOULD have posted, but didn't - please don't upload it again - simply drop us an email, asking us what happened to it. (Be sure to identify it clearly.) We'll get back to you about why it wasn't posted, or post it if it was simply overlooked. (Because yeah, we do make mistakes sometimes.) Hopefully this clarifies the issue somewhat. I'll do my best to get the recent stuff put up soon. (Louis Wu 14:25:13 UTC)
August 25, 2003 Link to this post PSA 3 up at RvB I missed it yesterday, because we were pretty busy cleaning up... but Red vs Blue managed to resurrect the lost Public Service Announcement #3 from the failed hard drive, and it's now available to everyone (sponsors and regular visitors alike). It's pretty damn funny, on several levels. I nearly spit out coffee at the thought of a Milli Vanilli tattoo... (Louis Wu 12:52:28 UTC)
August 24, 2003 Link to this post CPL breaks down $30K Beginning to scrape the sleep out of my eyes - last night ended at 3:30, and started at... hmm, about 9 pm the night before. Decent lanfest, except for melting the wiring in my garage... There's quite a bit of stuff to get to, but it's going to take most of the day to get to it. First up: CPL has announced its prize distribution for the Halo PC tournament at the CPL Winter Event; first prize is $9,000. More numbers and lots of links can be found in CobaltNova's forum post. Good money, if you're skilled enough... (Louis Wu 15:09:12 UTC)
July 29, 2003 Link to this post Going to CPL Summer Event? Play Halo PC! Nice. Gearbox has announced that they'll be running a team competition during their workshop at the CPL Summer Event - if you're a registered attendee, you can play 5-on-5 Halo PC from 2-5 pm on August 2 against Gearbox and Bungie employees, with the chance to win prizes from Gearbox, Bungie, and NVIDIA. Props to kappa, who noticed a writeup at cached.net. (Louis Wu 17:55:22 UTC)
July 28, 2003 Link to this post Predator - stalking a marine near you We didn't want to announce this on the front page before there was some backup... but now there is some backup. c0ld vengeance (who did a pretty amazing job with Haliens, once upon a time) is back with Predator, a remake of (a chunk of) the movie Predator, in the Halo engine. Some very, very nice touches. It's available in two formats; a 48 mb DivX-encoded AVI (it's almost 7 minutes long), or a 21 mb QuickTime 5 version. (Both are roughly the same quality, though the QT version is a tad darker in a couple of places.) You can find the .avi at c0ldvengeance.com (thanks to BOLL), doughmainename.com (thanks to gwdp...to), and FilePlanet. The .mov is currently only available at c0ldvengeance.com. Viewer comments can be found in this thread. As an aside, I find it rather amazing how many movies we've announced today, given the current bandwidth crunch... (Louis Wu 21:24:59 UTC)
July 22, 2003 Link to this post And the Rocket goes to... Emil of the CobaltNova Halo League would like to announce the first annual Rockets On Prisoner awards: "With approximately 240 to 300 Halo movies having been developed since the game's release it was time that the community begin to recognize the very best among them. This year the "Rockets on Prisoner" award will be accorded to the winner in each of the following categories: Best Movie, Best Cinematography, Best Screenplay, Best Editing Sound and Visual Effects, Best Musical Score, and Best Documentary." They've already got quite a few well-known (and not so well-known) films up on the lists of potential nominees. Head over and check out the talent. If you don't see a film you think should be entered, let them know. The deadline for nominations is Sunday, July 27th, so get going! (mnemesis 06:49:08 UTC)
July 19, 2003 Link to this post Sidewinder Saga links - all in one place We've put up a mirror page for the Sidewinder Saga, because it was getting confusing figuring out where (outside of the Halogamers.com home site) you could get the various movies. Thanks to Team Ice for their mirroring help - as an aside, Blade has also posted the Halo 2 Announcement trailer and The E3 Demo trailer on their video page. (Louis Wu 10:56:39 UTC)
July 14, 2003 Link to this post Now it's official - 3 million sold Folks have bandied about the '3 million sold' figure for Halo for the last couple of months... but today, Microsoft and Bungie have announced officially that that number has been reached. From the official press release: Microsoft Game Studios and Bungie Studios today announced that the critically acclaimed "Halo: Combat Evolved" for Xbox has sold over three million copies worldwide. "Great to see that Halo continues to be a success on Xbox," said Bungie studio manager Pete Parsons, "and later this summer we will unleash Halo for the PC with online multiplayer capabilities featuring new maps, weapons and vehicles, plus the ability for fans to create mods." Bungie is currently hard at work on the highly anticipated sequel, Halo 2, which will come to Xbox in 2004. I can't find an online copy yet... but when we hear of one, I'll link it. Update: The press release can now be found on Xbox.com. Thanks to Zac for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 19:54:05 UTC)
July 13, 2003 Link to this post Red vs Blue Episode 12, again Red vs Blue Episode 12 is now available to the publc. Normally, this doesn't warrant a separate news post (we announce the RvB movies when they hit the Sponsor pages)... but in this case, there's some additional info which might be of use to some of you. First, the archive of existing episodes has been pulled offline until traffic drops, so that they can serve Ep12. They're guessing Monday or Tuesday for its return. Second, in addition to standard HTTP and Bit Torrent download links, they also now have FilePlanet links - the options continue to increase. (Louis Wu 17:24:36 UTC)
July 5, 2003 Link to this post (Mortal) Combat Evolved. Seeing as the Fourth was a holiday, yesterday's One One Se7en didn't get announced until right now - still, technically, at the home of the poster (if not via the timesystem in use at this website) the Fourth... If you have to ask what Babality is, you didn't get the title of this strip, either. At least the POOF is relevant for today (or yesterday, as the case may be). (Louis Wu 02:36:43 UTC)
July 2, 2003 Link to this post CPL, Halo PC, Dallas, December - mucho cash The CPL Winter 2003 Championships has been announced - Dallas, TX, December 16-20, 2003. Three tournaments, including a $30,000 Halo PC (team) tournament. Nice! (Thanks to kappa, who noticed it on Cached.net.) (Louis Wu 22:06:55 UTC)
June 25, 2003 Link to this post The countdown is on Anonyme points out that the Halo Action Figures are available for pre-order at at least one online store. (It's doubtful these are sanctioned by Joyride or Microsoft; they're still using the images released when the figures were first announced, and as we've seen from the Bungie Webcam, the figures have changed quite a bit since then... but the fact remains, SOME are gearing up already for this sale!) (Louis Wu 19:12:13 UTC)
June 20, 2003 Link to this post The Pillar of Art is Standing The day has come - and man, have we been waiting for it! The Pillar of Art contest results have finally been posted. Details, and images of all the entries, can be found on the Pillar of Art site... but we'll recap the basic stuff here. - First Prize: Adam Vehige ($250, and a signed piece from Bungie)
- Second Prize: Richard Menchaca ($150)
- Third Prize: Russ Leach ($100)
- Special Award: Geoff Chang (Red MC action figure, as seen on the webcam)
There are also (as-yet unannounced) prizes for some of the younger submitters; we haven't pinned down exactly what's available yet, so we haven't decided how to divvy up the loot - but that's coming. Also coming are artist bios, and their explanations of their work. (We simply didn't have time to get all of this into web-friendly format in time for this post.) The gallery showing for all of this work will take place on July 5, and details will be posted as the day gets closer. Congratulations to everyone who entered - we had a tough time! And to Richard Menchaca - we hope this prize makes a decent birthday present for you today. :) (Louis Wu 16:22:50 UTC)
June 18, 2003 Link to this post Halogamers.com goes live Wow. Every week, we get email from folks who want their site to be added to our Links list. We announce 'em all... but it's rare that I'm as impressed with one as I am with Halogamers.com. Clean design, good (unique) content, lots to explore... It's not finished yet, but it's well on its way. Check 'em out... and if you're near Eau Claire, WI, go play with 'em! (Louis Wu 18:50:46 UTC)
June 14, 2003 Link to this post Timberland Warthogs Don't they ever stop? Bungie has put up yet another desktop for you - this time, it's a pretty straightforward screenshot adaptation, using material from Halo PC. Check it out on the Halo PC Wallpapers page at Bungie's Tru7h and Reconciliation. Thanks to nukedude for the heads-up. (This was actually announced, along with the Ghost Chase II image we mentioned yesterday... but somehow I missed the reference. Busy, or something. Not sure.) (Louis Wu 10:30:36 UTC)
June 13, 2003 Link to this post New desktop at b.net Another (unannounced) desktop image has been released on bungie.net: E3 2003: Ghost Chase II (bottom of the Halo 2 Wallpapers page). It's not mentioned on the front page of Tru7h and Reconciliation or the main bungie.net site; we only know about it because gd pointed it out in our forum. Go grab a copy! (Louis Wu 11:00:07 UTC)
June 11, 2003 Link to this post Hold on to your hats - the internet's coming down For those not tuned in to the minute-by-minute goings-on at bungie.net, about an hour ago, SketchFactor announced that the E3 2003 vid (the real deal, not the shakeycam versions floating around the net) will be released this Friday. Start your browsers! (Louis Wu 01:27:10 UTC)
June 10, 2003 Link to this post Contest Updates Evil Otto posted a note on bungie.net explaining that the Halo 2 content contest would probably be written up, with winners announced, by early next week. Good luck to all who entered! (I'd like to take this contest-mentioning opportunity to apologize to all Pillar of Art entrants, and those waiting to see the final work product; the pieces we showed at E3 are finally on their way back to the East coast, and we should have judging and announcements ready in the next little bit, as well. We never, ever, EVER thought it would take this long, and we're sorry. More details can be found at the Pillar of Art site.) (Louis Wu 19:05:38 UTC)
