May 30, 2003 Link to this post Overdue pics... A week and a half ago, Warbow posted a few very nice shots of the limited-edition Master Chief action figure given away at the fanfest. For some unknown reason, I neglected to ever mention this to the wider front-page audience. Consider it mentioned. (Louis Wu 15:26:50 UTC)

May 9, 2003 Link to this post Halo: First Strike info Ciarán did some digging, and came up with a bit more information about the next Halo novel, working title 'Halo: First Strike'. From a Random House employee: As for "First Strike," it will take place immediately after "The Flood," and will continue to follow the Master Chief. Other than that, I can't yet reveal. Interesting... interesting. Check out the forum post for more info about eBook versions of the first two novels, as well. (Louis Wu 15:40:37 UTC)

April 30, 2003 Link to this post One One Se7en Debuts Stuntmutt has begun work on a new comic strip - one that we're hosting here. It's called One One Se7en, and it stars your very own Master Chief, in all his MS Paint glory. We'll be releasing new comics every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, unless something comes up. To start with, go check out 'Mission Um... Possible'. (Louis Wu 13:27:50 UTC)

April 4, 2003 Link to this post More Origami A couple of weeks ago, we put up a news article about an origami Master Chief project available from playmore.com. Later that day, Geeoff put up shots of his finished product (including a custom-added AR). We haven't heard from anyone else... until today, when DocOctavius (in a transparent?but ultimately doomed-to-failure?bid to flood our front page) threw up his own copies. Check 'em out! March 22, 2003 Link to this post Halo mods - lots and lots of Halo mods During the past week, we've had word of several mods/skins for other games, using Halo designs. A couple are now housed here. First up is agentJ64's Master Chiefette model for Jedi Knight II - pretty sweet! Then, we've got a Halo skin for Counter-Strike made by rdc^kosh (and found by Matt Smith) - with a bunch of screenshots for flavor. Lastly, Tankramp over at Battleground: Halo found a Blood Gulch conversion for Battlefield 1942 - you can see screenshots and download the maps at LanClan's website. If you can't wait for Halo 2 (or Halo for PC), go play with Halo characters and environments in other games! (Louis Wu 22:26:18 UTC)
March 22, 2003 Link to this post Halo Origami Funky. A Microsoft-run Xbox promotion site, Playmore.com, has a pretty cool little toy for you; Halo Origami. It's an 800k PDF that, once printed and cut up, lets you put together your own little Master Chief figure. It's a totally Flash-driven site, so pointing you directly to the product is not possible; but after it loads, go to 'Play', then scroll through the options until you hit Halo Origami. (The download link is next to the mouse - as you get close, it'll say 'Activate'.) Thanks to Team Overkill for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 02:41:26 UTC)
February 27, 2003 Link to this post MC in UT2003 Strato ran across a Master Chief model for UT2003 - you can find it at UT2003 HQ. The download is just over a meg, and there's a screenshot (mirrored locally in case it vanishes) to show you what you're getting. (Louis Wu 10:15:28 UTC)
February 18, 2003 Link to this post The Master Chiefs Behind the Game An email from the raVen tipped us off to an interview with Bungie artist Shikai "Shiek" Wang. Woohoo, UIUC! (Count Zero 16:23:45 UTC)
February 7, 2003 Link to this post Book details emerge More information about Halo Novel #2 at Ballantine: The Human-Covenant War, a desperate struggle for humankind's very survival, has reached its boiling point on the mysterious, ring world called Halo. But the fierce Covenant warriors, the mightiest alien military force known, are not the only peril lying in wait. As the fortress world of Reach and its brave defenders were bombarded to rubble, a single cruiser fled the carnage with the battle's only human survivors-Captain Keyes, his crew of a few hundred Marines, and the last remaining SPARTAN super-soldier, the Master Chief. With the cruiser's artificial intelligence, Cortana, concealed in his battle armor, the Master Chief crash lands on Halo in the midst of a massive Covenant occupation. Curiously, the alien soldiers appear to be searching for something hidden on the ring. Built by a long-dead race, Halo harbors many deadly secrets, but one overshadows them all. Now the Master Chief must lead the scattered troops in a brutal race to unravel Halo's darkest mystery-and unleash its greatest source of power. . . . Heh - one of the topics that's come up a lot recently on our forum is whether the Forerunners are actually gone or not - this text suggests they are, but is it just random copy written by someone who doesn't look as closely at the story as some of our visitors? (Thanks to Aaron Charles for noticing the new copy.) (Louis Wu 13:52:43 UTC)
January 27, 2003 Link to this post The old guy's still got stuff left. Hehe... and the egg-like things continue. Yesterday, Argos noticed that 'Rock Anthem for Saving the World', a high-energy piece from the Halo Soundtrack, was exactly 1:17 long. Not only does that match up nicely with the Master Chief's Spartan II designation... but expressed in seconds, it's got a length of 77. Marty made it clear that this wasn't an accident. The Halo Soundtrack's been out for 8 months now, you'd think someone would have noticed sooner... (Louis Wu 19:37:46 UTC)
January 23, 2003 Link to this post Great Pencilwork A very cool concept sketch of the Master Chief - check our Miscellaneous Art section. (Louis Wu 21:10:21 UTC)
January 19, 2003 Link to this post New Cover Art Whoa - can't wait to see a bigger version. Dulaman87 noticed that the Ballantine entry for Halo: The Flood (the next Halo novel) now has all-new cover art. Is that the Master Chief with his helmet off? Update: Thanks to the more than half-dozen people who sent links to this picture (made local here in case it changes again), making it clear that the MC's face is NOT visible. My bad. (Louis Wu 17:08:43 UTC)
January 9, 2003 Link to this post A tale of many images... Okay, this is a long story. Bear with me. It all started when Dulaman87 sent us a note pointing out that the Random House entry for the next Halo novel (Halo: The Flood) now has a picture to go along with the cover. The thing is... that picture's been around for a while. It first showed up as a cover for the Portuguese magazine, BGamer, sent to us by Razorback over a year ago. Three weeks after that, we put up scans from the January 2002 Official Xbox Magazine... and the same image (sort of) was included as a 2-page mural. (DT_Spike combined the two halves to make it easier to see.) What's interesting about that image is that OXM seems to have airbrushed out the Master Chief in the foreground (though they left his leg shadows on the rock he was standing on). Two months later, we received a Miscellaneous Art entry from Draikin that seemed to show the same image as the original BGamer scan... and though we didn't notice it at the time, it's NOT the same image as the OXM mural. (Look at the right side of the images, for example; Draikin's version has a pair of Jackals that are replaced by Grunts in the OXM version. There are other differences, as well.) Upon close consideration, it's clear that this image (these images, rather) are composites... they pull in pieces from many, many released screenshots. This is not a standard thing for Bungie to do... but the picture has shown up in a huge variety of places, which suggests that there must be SOME official-type source for it. We have three questions: - Who created the original image?
- What screenshots were used to composite the images (there will be at least two lists, since the images are different)
- Is this really the final cover for the Halo Novel, or was Random House simply putting up a picture to have one up?
Feel free to answer as many of these questions as you think you can in this forum thread. Thanks to Dulaman for instigating this investigation! (Louis Wu 15:45:05 UTC)
January 2, 2003 Link to this post Another Lego Hog Fury Three discovered yet another Lego Warthog over at Brickshelf - check out the work of Jeremiah VanderMark. I love the dedication of Lego fanatics. The little painted Master Chief rocks! (Louis Wu 10:53:04 UTC)
December 28, 2002 Link to this post One small step for Cortana... The Master Chief is... where? Check the Miscellaneous Art section. (Louis Wu 15:35:04 UTC)
December 28, 2002 Link to this post Hoist a Guiness! The latest issue of the Guiness Book of World Records has given the title of 'Most Advanced Game Console' to the Xbox - and the picture they've chosen to use to illustrate the point is the Master Chief. Not too shabby! (This was posted at Bungie.net - but we received email about 4 hours earlier from md10md.) (Louis Wu 03:05:56 UTC)
December 21, 2002 Link to this post Gamers.com previews Halo 2 Gamers.com has put up a Halo 2 preview. It's a word-for-word reprint of the 2-page spread that came out in the Winter 2002 issue of Xbox Nation magazine (we won't be able to bring that to you until January 21, when this issue is no longer on the stands), and most of the information has been seen before... but there are a couple of interesting tidbits. It states (rather than suggests, as other previews have done) that the Master Chief will be visiting another Halo... and it mentions an overhaul of the Human pistol. Go read it! Thanks to Andrew Katz for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 01:49:07 UTC)
