Normally, I'd have expected such an announcement to be laughed out of the forum - after all, Halo 1 is approaching 5 years old; how is it possible that there are still eggs (especially in-plain-sight ones, as this one was) to be discovered? The thread remained civil, however, and I went looking for myself - and it did, indeed, look as though there were initials shot into a wall on 343 Guilty Spark. (A bad picture is here.) Dave 'Evil Otto' Candland went to the trouble of checking with the level designers about this one - and while it turns out that it's purely coincidence that the bullet-holes appear to be initials, I find it wonderful that Bungie is willing to follow up on fan-instituted hunts within a few hours... they show us why we run a fansite for them! July 31, 2006 Link to this post Stark Contrast. Stuntmutt takes a look at the serial Halo comic (announced for next year) in today's One One Se7en. (Louis Wu 17:38:55 UTC)
July 28, 2006 Link to this post Design a Faceplate Contest w00t! One contest ends, another begins! Before I explain, let me clear out some old business; it took a bit to secure them all, but we can now announce that the 7 winners of the last 7 on the 7th contest - Sacred Lawnmowers - will be receiving copies of the Halo Graphic Novel. (YES!) Okay - on to NEW business. A couple days ago, we mentioned that Bungie had created an official Halo faceplate for the Xbox 360; the problem is, they won't be available for purchase until October. However, they've got two prototypes that they're just itching to give away... so here's your chance! All you have to do is design your OWN cool faceplate (the template is available for download on the Contest page)... and if Bungie thinks it's the cat's pajamas, you'll have your hands on one of these babies before August is over! Go read the contest page for full details; you've got 2 weeks to get your entry in. Gogogo! (Louis Wu 22:14:59 UTC)
July 28, 2006 Link to this post Eric Nylund is NOT working on Bungie's next title. Eric Nylund wrote to squash some rumors that have been floating around; You might have seen the note at SPOnG today that speculated that a new, non-Halo Bungie title would be announced at X06 in Barcelona in September. This came hot on the heels of the pickup of a small tidbit from a Nylund blog post a couple of weeks ago (CVG wrote it up here, SPOnG discussed it here - I can't explain why these sites are two weeks behind on this one)... and lots of forums began putting these bits together. Bungie's announcing a new non-Halo title... Nylund, who has a history with Bungie, is working on a new Microsoft title; you can see where the gears started spinning. Stop 'em now; Nylund's newest project has nothing whatsoever to do with Bungie. That's straight from the horse's mouth (well, Nylund's, anyway - not really nice to call him a horse). Now we just gotta figure out if the SPOnG rumors about X06 are true! (Louis Wu 03:04:42 UTC)
July 27, 2006 Link to this post Jaheijagaj - Realized Wow - so I'm not even sure what category to put this in. Some time ago, Jillybean described a fictitious board game in a fan fiction she wrote, called The Priestess and the Warrior. It was a regular fixture in the story, as time went on - but it was never described in very much detail. Last night, Dav Flamerock dropped by our forum to announce that not only had he fleshed out the full ruleset... but he'd put together a board and pieces for it, as well. The Microsoft Word document he posted is downloadable from a filesharing site, linked in his forum post - but I've also put together a web version that might be easier to read (and is certainly smaller). A fan creation, based on a fan creation, based on a game... there are definitely a lot of layers here. Check it out! (Louis Wu 11:47:32 UTC)
July 22, 2006 Link to this post Monthly Halo Comic - Summer 2007 Whoa, funky. Apparently, a monthly Halo comic, a joint venture from Bungie and Marvel and debuting next summer, was announced during a panel about the Halo Graphic Novel given yesterday at Comic-Con. More info when we know it - but you can read a short article about it at IGN. Thanks, Starbuck. (Louis Wu 12:51:09 UTC)
July 6, 2006 Link to this post Administrivia I hate to write I don't normally reiterate stuff that's written in FAQs around the site, but I've been getting an awful lot of mail about this one, so I'm going to make a public statement: we're really sorry, we don't have space to announce new Halo websites on our front page. If you just put the finishing touches on a new site, and you want to get the word out... feel free to post a link in our forum, but please don't ask me to put up a news post, because I hate saying no. As it says in our submissions guidelines, if you have something (less nebulous than 'a new cool site!') to share with the Halo community - an article, artwork, whatever - sure, go ahead and send us the link. But if you just want us to announce your site - you need it stress-tested, you lost your forum and need it rebuilt, you're looking for new members, whatever - our front page isn't the way to go. Thanks! (Louis Wu 21:50:07 UTC)
June 28, 2006 Link to this post Halo 3 Cover Contest - Winners Announced Halo Planet's Halo 3 Cover Contest has been over for a bit, and today they've announced the winners. 200 entries, 4 winners, with a bunch of Honorary Mentions to come soon. (Heh - are you as amused as I am that the overall winner is (or shares a name with) the head content monkey at Bungie.net?) Check out the pretty pictures! (Louis Wu 15:18:56 UTC)
May 27, 2006 Link to this post Halo 3 Cover Art Now that Halo 3 has been announced, people are beginning to submit cover art mockups. We've added them to our existing Cover Art section (on a separate Halo 3 page). Take a look! (Louis Wu 15:57:50 UTC)
May 24, 2006 Link to this post Virginia Halo Tourney HaloMan sent in word of another tourney this weekend - this one in northern Virginia. Hosted by C3CyberClub, Sterling, VA, 4v4 double elimination, $100/team, prizes to be announced. More details on this page. (Louis Wu 21:42:02 UTC)
May 22, 2006 Link to this post VSDA Nominates Halo 2 for GOTY - Again The Video Software Dealers Association announced the nominees for their Game of the Year Awards today - Halo 2 is on the Xbox list, even though it won last year. (The full list of nominees is here.) Thanks, Gamasutra. (Louis Wu 19:06:46 UTC)
May 15, 2006 Link to this post And then, at Band Camp... In what must be the most detailed view of the Halo 3 trailer to date, Narcogen has gone over it moment by moment, noting interesting tidbits (covered elsewhere, but not all in one place) and adding commentary. Save this one. (Louis Wu 18:57:58 UTC)
May 15, 2006 Link to this post Consider Him Hailed. DropShock Episode 15 is now avilable for download - an hour and a half of stuff like discussion of the Halo 3 announcement, Gravemind's Poem, and the 2007 Halo marketing machine. Go listen. (Louis Wu 15:37:55 UTC)
May 15, 2006 Link to this post Da guy iz creative, ya know? A relatively old face has reappeared and stepped into the shoes of previous forum posters with not only the inquisitiveness but the creative drive to help the community visualize the clues that Bungie has dropped. In this case, Geoff Chang (of POA infamy) has used Google Earth as well as his own creative skills to try to figure out just where the heck the Forerunner Artifact, the centerpiece of the Halo 3 announcement trailer, is located. We've been told by Bungie to not expect any Marathon imagery in the artifact's structure, but regardless of that, nice work Geoff!
UPDATE: And another example of how the old regulars are truly worthy of being called 'regulars', Ape Man has come out of hiding to offer some corrections to Geoff's musings. Regardless of how this all ends, THIS is what the forum is all about. Intelligent discussion that neither stretches credibility nor resorts to name-calling when folks are called on the veracity of their claims. We're doing Hamish proud, I tellsya. (Ding 01:44:57 UTC)
May 12, 2006 Link to this post Announce This! vivien molia pointed out a new Press Start to Play with a Halo theme - take a look! (Louis Wu 23:25:51 UTC)
May 11, 2006 Link to this post Organized Halo 3 Content at R.net Over at Rampancy.net, Narcogen has lost no time organizing the Halo 3 content out at this point; you'll find a new Halo 3 Movies page, containing local mirrors of the announcement trailer, a Halo 3 Articles page, containing local mirrors for Bungie's Halo 3 comments, and a Halo 3 Image Gallery, which contains both official screenshots and some interesting screengrabs that have been intriguing forumgoers everywhere for the last couple of days. Go look! (Louis Wu 04:42:59 UTC)
May 10, 2006 Link to this post Lots of Trailers Versions Online There are a whole bunch of sites offering mirroring or re-encoding of the Halo 3 trailer; I really don't see a need to list them all, because the official sites (Bungie.net and Xbox.com) are doing an admirable job of keeping up with demand. (Bungie.net has actually re-released the WMP9 versions, because the original ones had some odd aspect stuff going on.) The one link that's probably worth passing on, though - at least if you're on a Windows box with a pretty fast processor - is the official press release of the 720p WMP version - 5.1 audio and all. It weighs in at 132 mb, and is USELESS for Mac users (it's encoded with Windows-only codecs), but it's as high-res as you're gonna get on the web. Thanks, MC Smoke. (And I'll mention the Halo: Portable versions, too, because there aren't a lot of places out there to grab versions for your PocketPC/iPod/PSP.) (Louis Wu 13:12:19 UTC)
May 10, 2006 Link to this post Forum High Gear Predictably, the forum has exploded with speculation about yesterday's released trailer. Much of the discussion could be considered spoiler-laden, for folks either avoiding the trailer or still in the dark about the first two games... but I'm of the opinion that there's nothing here that Bungie doesn't want you to see. A few intriguing threads (by no means ALL the stuff worth reading): - Dogchow was the first, but Big Lou's version is nice, too - it's Cortana's voice, but who's really speaking?
- Many, many threads are discussing the re-emergence of content from the Cortana letters, released 7 years ago, but left behind after some overzealous use by a now-ex-Bungie employee. Search for 'Cortana Letter', all, to find a few.
- There are lots of people happy to see the Assault Rifle back, there's plenty of speculation about the Chief's visor reflection, people noticed stuff like missing Banshee pilots, and there are folks looking at some of the images flashing through the trailer, attempting to decipher hidden meanings. Pixel by pixel analysis continues apace.
- Rachda and GLuebben took a look at the forerunner glyphs once again, in light of this trailer (check this post for a clearer version of GLeubben's PDF).
Again - this is by no means a comprehensive list. Over 1200 new posts have appeared on our forum in the last 24 hours (before this announcement, we were averaging 2-300/day). It's just a random selection of fun stuff. See what else you can find. (Louis Wu 12:53:01 UTC)
May 9, 2006 Link to this post Halo 3 Content Now Up For what it's worth: The Halo 3 content at Bungie.net is available. (Up until now, clicking any of the links in the Top Story or on B.net's home page simply redirected to the home page... but the section is now live.) The screenshots are all from the trailer (though they're considerably clearer than screengrabs), and the only wallpaper available is a 'Finish the Fight' one. The FAQ is worth reading - especially the bit about how the trailer is a real-time piece of work. That is: this trailer is NOT like the X02 trailer, which was rendered in-engine, but not in real time; this was recorded in real time, off stock Xbox 360 hardware. Yes, it looks that good. (Louis Wu 22:55:02 UTC)
May 9, 2006 Link to this post Content for EVERYONE Swing by Bungie.net - now back up, and with a pretty amazing top story. The announcement trailer is available for all - in QT and WMP9 formats (with more options coming soon, looks like) - plus Screenshots, Storyboards, Wallpapers, a new FAQ, an About page, and a new forum. WONGA. Go take it all in. Update: hmm... looks like the non-trailer content isn't actually accessible yet (I just get redirected back to the main page). Patience. :) (The movie links work fine, though.) (Louis Wu 19:57:36 UTC)
May 9, 2006 Link to this post Halo 3 - Announced If you've got a 360, jump on to Marketplace right now. You can download a 104 mb trailer for Halo3 there. (To the best of my knowledge, this is not available outside of Xbox Live's Marketplace.) Thanks to many - looks like Dan Chosich was first. (Louis Wu 19:12:52 UTC)
May 9, 2006 Link to this post Shirt/Raffle Info Thanks to all who preordered the first official HBO shirt, and entered our E3 raffles - I wanted to let you all know that the shirt is still available, but it's no longer at pre-order pricing. (It's now $14.89, instead of $11.29, and at the moment, only mediums and larges are available.) That doesn't mean you shouldn't buy one, though! The 3 DeanFest slots will be announced later this morning, by Mig - we'll be picking the poster winners from the fest itself. (The raffles are now closed, if that wasn't clear before.) (Louis Wu 12:21:06 UTC)
May 4, 2006 Link to this post Freelancer: Combat Evolved Announcement Film Freelancer: Combat Evolved, a total modification for Freelancer, released an announcement film showing off some of its content last week; you can find official mirrors in this thread on their forum. We've put up a copy of our own (WMP9 format, 16.2 mb, or a new QuickTime format, 14.9 mb) because... well, we're nice like that sometimes. Give it a look; these guys have done a pretty good job! (Swing by their website for more info about the mod.) (Louis Wu 15:05:10 UTC)
May 3, 2006 Link to this post WSVG Announces Titles - including Halo 2 Another big tourney - the World Series of Video Games has announced the official Xbox titles they'll be using for their 2006 events, and Halo 2 is on the list. Check out the press release at GotFrag. Halo 2 qualifiers will be held in Louisville and Dallas, and registration is open now. (Louis Wu 13:13:34 UTC)
April 30, 2006 Link to this post Shirty. Who'da thunk it? One One Se7en turned three years old today - nicely timed with the use of artwork on the first HBO shirt. Stuntmutt took advantage of the announcement to show off one of my favorite shirt designs (that we passed on, because it required more colors than we could afford) in a special Sunday Strip. He also wrote up a blog entry which mentions the shirt (along with a TON of other related stuff) - definitely worth a read. Go read, go laugh, go buy a shirt. (Louis Wu 17:08:57 UTC)
