UNSCDF interviews Eric Nylund
Major Silva stopped by our forum yesterday to announce that his interview with Eric Nylund was now posted at UNSCDF; while Nylund still doesn't give away a lot of secrets about the upcoming Ghosts of Onyx, it's clear that there are still good questions you can ask (the guys who did the IGN and Gamespot interviews recently might take a look). Check it out! (Louis Wu 16:02:43 UTC)

Comic Relief
Looks like it's the day for Halo references in cartoons. demus found an entry in a contest that depicts what most of us have wanted to do, from time to time, on XBL... and BitMaP shared a comic he'd drawn that looks at some potential work opportunities for Jeff Steitzer (the 'Voice of God', who announces Halo Multiplayer). Whee! (Louis Wu 13:36:54 UTC)

Promotional Video Contest Winners Announced
Cybiotik wrote to point out that the fan-run video contest on Bungie.net we mentioned back in August has had its winners announced - congrats to the winners! (Louis Wu 13:19:21 UTC)

Gamespot Interview - Nylund
Eric Nylund talked to Gamespot yesterday, as well (not wanting to make them feel left out after the IGN interview, I guess) - again, he does a pretty good job of filling the interview without actually saying much about unannounced material... but it's an interesting read nonetheless. Looks like Maxmidget was first. (Louis Wu 11:44:03 UTC)

You Got Questions? Yeah, well.
KP has posted on our forum (and on lots of other forums) that Bungie is looking for questions to answer in this week's Weekly Update - don't bother asking about unreleased/unannounced stuff, but if you see this soon after it's posted, go ahead and toss your question into the hat! Cuttin' a 'Kin
The last three years, around this time of year, you've been able to take a knife to a member of the cucurbit family (maybe you know it better as a pumpkin), and win cool stuff from us. vshields asked if we were gonna do it again - the answer was 'yes, of course, we do it every year'... except for one small problem. Life is so crazy right now that I haven't had time to even THINK about prizes; we've got nothing to offer you at the moment. However, if I wait any longer to announce the contest, you're not going to have enough time to come up with a cool design! So, here's the deal: We're holding the 343 Guilt O' Lantern contest again this year. It'll have way-cool prizes for the top three carvings (plus bonus prizes if winners from previous years are at the top again - see the Rules section for more details) - we just don't know what they are yet. But they'll be way-cool. We'll supply a bunch, and we'll gladly entertain offers from the community, if anyone wants to contribute (as has happened in the past). Get to thinking - you've got just under 4 weeks! (Louis Wu 20:13:39 UTC)

Stoking the coals
BBC News takes a look at fan reaction to recent Halo-related announcements; it's a nice overview of the situation as it stands. (I do have to question their choice of sources, though...) Thanks to hminn for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 13:11:06 UTC)

Spartan Group OMG.
Since last week's announcement about Halo Wars, our forum has been rife with discussion about what this might mean for fans down the road - the usual cries of 'sellout!' and 'doom, despair' have been flying for days. Folks are even annoyed by the cheesiness of the final line of the Halo Wars trailer, and basing predictions about the game itself on this annoyance. Stuntmutt, as usual, cuts through the words and delivers a pithy summary - check out today's One One Se7en. (Louis Wu 16:24:25 UTC)

HW Marketplace Goodies
Last week, after Halo Wars was announced, Xbox Live Marketplace made available both new gamertag icons and a 360 Halo Wars Theme - we didn't get around to pointing them out, though other sites have. Thanks to c0ld vengeance for the reminder. (Louis Wu 15:15:59 UTC)

Mesmerize
Killer 047 announced a huge (30 minutes, more than 400 mb in hi-res format) tricking montage film. I haven't had time to watch it (or download it, even)... but the forum post was pretty fancy. If you've got a large pipe, and a lot of time... check this out! (Louis Wu 11:53:20 UTC)

More Eyeballs
MediaPost takes a look at the newly announced Wingnut Interactive ventures from the viewpoint that movies are making less money than they used to, and moviemakers are looking to expand their audiences in other ways. Interesting take. (Louis Wu 11:49:44 UTC)

Do we need to start HEO?
The really, really big news today from Microsoft is the announcement of 'Halo Wars', from Ensemble Studios (the guys behind Age of Empires, and other similar games) - a Halo Real-Time Strategy game! It hasn't been announced on the live feed yet - but Luke Smith has announced it on 1Up. Stay tuned for more details! (Louis Wu 17:12:24 UTC)

Terminal Announcements
Jordan117 discovered that the loudspeaker announcements on the multiplayer map Terminal range from the mundane, to the Easter-eggish. I think anyone who's played the map knows that there are a variety of announcements... but nobody (that I know of) has gone to the trouble of transcribing them before. He didn't have any way to record them - but he gave such specific instructions on how to hear the snippets well that it was trivial for me to go in and record a bunch. I only let the recording run for 15 minutes, and captured only 18 of the 25 listed - but it's a fine start, and I'm sure someone else can grab the last 7. Great stuff! Go hear the snippets in our Dialogue Databank. Update: Thanks muchly to Psychophan7, who submitted 6 of the remaining 7 clips. (They're mixed in with the original 18 at this point.) Marty also stopped by to tease everyone with a question... got any answers? (Louis Wu 15:17:02 UTC)

FanFic contest at UNSCDF
LoneRanger 2.5 stopped by to announce a new contest over at UNSCDF - it's a fan fiction contest, and the top few winners will win autographed copies of Eric Nylund's Ghosts of Onyx (and Eric has also agreed to help judge the contest). Full details can be found in the forum thread, and at the UNSCDF website. (Louis Wu 19:02:39 UTC)

Game Writers Conference
On September 6 and 7 (that's next Wednesday and Thursday), in Austin, Texas, the Game Writers Conference will be held. It's not for the casual gamer - registration is $400 (and goes up to $500 after next Tuesday), with only a $50 discount for students... but if you're interested in game writing, this is the place to be! Bungie's Joe Staten will be part of a panel discussing dialogue writing for voice actors, and Wideload's Matt Soell (a late addition, and not visible on the website at this point) will be part of a discussion about Writing Comedy for Games. Should be a blast! (Interesting side note - Joe's bio mentions that the Halo film adaptation will be directed by Neill Blomkamp. Still waiting on that official announcement...) A closer look at the Blomkamp situation
Narcogen is curious about Neill Blomkamp - is he the chosen director of the Halo film? If so, why hasn't the announcement been finalized? If not, why haven't his interviews been disclaimed? He also takes a look at the appropriateness of the choice, with a summary of arguments for, and against, Blomkamp as director. Check it out at Rampancy.net. (Louis Wu 13:14:41 UTC)

Faceplate winners - soon!
Lots of people are asking, so I'm going to post this tonight - we've managed to pick our winners, and runners-up, for the faceplate contest... but I haven't had time to put together a presentation page, so we'll announce the details tomorrow (well, Wednesday, which technically is today, news-wise) - look for an announcement in the next 18 hours or so. Thanks for your patience! (Louis Wu 02:29:08 UTC)

Pink to Black
Whoa, bizarre. Back in March, we listed links to ISBNdb.com and Amazon.com for the upcoming Nylund novel, Ghosts of Coral. Following those links today, you find that the info hasn't changed... but if you change the 'com' in the amazon link to 'co.uk', you get to a book listed as 'Ghosts of Onyx' (quick screenshot, in case it changes). A mistake on Amazon.uk's part? Or a slip of an unannounced title? Nice find by Tartarus! Update: looks like he posted it on our forum, as well (forum name of AT-GNaT). Chime in with your thoughts! Is he or isn't he?
As you might have noticed yesterday, an article went up on Xbox.com, announcing Neill Blomkamp as the director of the upcoming Halo movie - and then it went down again, leading to speculation that maybe it was a mistake. It MIGHT be a mistake - but it's far more likely that it was just a premature announcement, and was pulled for that reason. Time will tell - but in the meantime, you should swing by Joystiq, for a nice roundup of most of Blomkamp's work to date (thanks, Sorahn), and when you're through, stop by Transbuddha for one they missed (which might be his best), Tempbot (thanks, RobW). Stay tuned - we'll let you know how this turns out. (Louis Wu 11:03:15 UTC)

Halo Director Announced
Wow... according to Xbox.com, a director has been chosen for the Halo movie... and it's a newcomer. Neill Blomkamp, who has a history of short films and commercial ads, will direct the Halo film as his first full-length big-screen project. Intriguing choice! Cornballer was first to our forum with the news. (Update: Whoops, looks like the Xbox.com page has been pulled. I guess that means that the unconfirmed nature of this bit is now even more firmly unconfirmed. Or something. - mnem) (Louis Wu 16:58:28 UTC)

Halo for Hunger IV
Over at Bungie.net, there's an announcement about a Halo 2 tourney for charity in Wisconsin, coming up next weekend. $5 (or 5 cans of non-perishable food items) gets you in, prizes come from a lot of places. Visit B.net for more info! (Louis Wu 18:33:12 UTC)
