If you've got the interest, check the details at the GTV website, and submit your entry soon! (Louis Wu 11:25:12 UTC)
January 9, 2007 Link to this post Cat In The Hat When the Legendary Edition of Halo 3 was first announced, someone in our forum asked if the helmet would be wearable. KP answered "yes, if your head is very small... and rectangular." Paul Maestri came up with another possibility, in today's Halo Heads. (Louis Wu 19:49:06 UTC)
January 7, 2007 Link to this post The Riot 30 Sigafoos writes to point out The Riot 30 - community discussions, and the announcement of Community Awards for 2006. Voting opens Wednesday, but you can discuss stuff on their forum now. 23 minutes, 9 mb. Go listen. (Louis Wu 20:40:43 UTC)
January 6, 2007 Link to this post Our Newest Featured Artist - Veegie It's been a little while since we added an artist to our Gallery pages - but today, we're proud to announce a new home for Veegie's Halo-related artwork. Veegie likes to render stuff - but he does a sizeable amount of 2D work on the result; what you see, often, is a Halo image that looks like we wish the game could look. (Of course, we'll need to wait for the Xbox 1440 before that's going to happen...) Browse what's there, and we'll be sure to let you know when the collection grows! (Louis Wu 23:29:18 UTC)
December 27, 2006 Link to this post UNSCDF Blog Major Silva stopped by to announce the opening of the UNSCDF Blog, where staffers from that Halo news site can better express their personal opinions. Swing by to read opinions about Ghosts of Onyx. (Louis Wu 13:47:25 UTC)
December 26, 2006 Link to this post Montages out the Yin-Yang We got a weekly update post from Halomega - there were half a dozen new montages and gameplay vids; swing by their News and Announcements for the most recent. Visit every couple of days if you don't want to miss any of these - they're posting a LOT. (Louis Wu 10:45:13 UTC)
December 18, 2006 Link to this post Halo 3 trailer piano solo transcribed Over at Rampancy.net, spartan182 and young kaos have transcribed the Halo 3 Announcement Trailer piano solo, and it's available for download in Finale Notepad format. Nothing else, right now, and don't forget you'll need to be logged in to see the download link - but if you've got Finale Notepad, and a Rampancy.net account, go grab this! (Louis Wu 13:07:40 UTC)
December 15, 2006 Link to this post Battle of the Big Sellers So today Microsoft announced that Gears of War has sold 2 million copies - according to this article (thanks, JeBr0nie), that makes it "the fastest- selling next-generation game of 2006 and the fastest-selling exclusive Xbox(R) game ever", and according to this one, it's beaten Halo 2 in the race to 2 million. (That second article is obviously confused - a search of articles around November 10 and 11, 2004 - here's a representative one - will show that Microsoft announced sales of 2.4 million copies of Halo 2 in the first 24 hours it was on sale.) The first article... hmm. Halo 2 isn't a 'next-generation game of 2006', so that claim is safe... but until the Vista version of Halo 2 is released, Halo 2 is, indeed, an exclusive Xbox title. Bah - it's all just bragging rights, anyway. Lots of people have bought Gears of War - that should make Epic and Microsoft pretty happy. (Louis Wu 16:38:20 UTC)
December 15, 2006 Link to this post Happy Birthday... and Godspeed. Happy Birthday today (and a sad farewell) to vshields ash, who has turned 55 - and has announced his retirement from the Halo community. (It's real, and it's time, and though we're going to miss him, mostly because I won't be able to say there's a community member who's almost 15 years older than I am (well, except Marty, but he's so old he's passed go and started over - I think he's younger than KP now), it's the right thing to do.) Do a search for him here, or more usefully, at High Impact Halo, if you want to relive some of his contributions. vern... it's been a good run. Take care of yourself. (Louis Wu 12:30:11 UTC)
December 15, 2006 Link to this post Halo 3 Track Available on iTunes Marty O'Donnell has released the track from the Halo 3 Announcement trailer as a single, available for exclusive download from the iTunes Music Store. A thread sprang up on our forum last night, with a number of posters expressing everything from disappointment to disgust that this piece is for sale (at a whopping 99 cents), rather than being released for free... but remember, nobody's forcing you to buy this. The music is available, albeit mixed with ambient sounds, in the trailer itself, if you don't want to pay for it. (Jordan117 had a great suggestion - play this piece simultaneously with the Announcement trailer... you get an entirely different feel (though it matches up nicely). (Louis Wu 12:12:20 UTC)
December 14, 2006 Link to this post Creative Contests Winding Down We got word from bryboy remix, reminding us about the Halopeño So Hot Editing Contest, ending in just a few days. (Deadline for submissions is midnight, December 18, and winners will be announced on Christmas day.) As a refresher, all you need are moviemaking tools; the content is provided by HBO's cutscene library (video) and Halopen (audio). Winners will receive EB Games/Gamestop goodies from a $70 budget. Check the page for more details! (And while we're reminding you about contests at Halo sites, don't forget about Halo Everywhere, the 'put Halo into the world' contest being run by PraetoriaGuard. You've got until February for submissions, at that one. ) (Louis Wu 21:40:17 UTC)
December 12, 2006 Link to this post Str8 Rippin Wins WSVG Despite the melodrama, the WSVG finals went off as planned this weekend - and Str8 Rippin took the first-place title (and $20,000). MoBDeep.net took second, and XiT WoundZ grabbed third. You can read a writeup at TeamXbox. (Louis Wu 15:46:30 UTC)
December 9, 2006 Link to this post MLG vs WSVG - Pros in the middle Wow. Remember last week, when the World Series of Video Games announced that they'd made a deal with CBS Sports to broadcast Halo 2 gaming on the network? Yeah, well... the WSVG finals are this weekend, and four top MLG teams were supposed to be competing. All sorts of conditions had already been agreed to (they will be wearing MLG shirts during the tourney, and their gamertags will all be prefaced with 'MLG')... but things got ugly when the WSVG asked the players to sign a release allowing footage of them playing to be broadcast at a later date. (Read GotFrag's take, or Amped's take.) MLG told them not to do it, and for a little while, it looked like the MLG players might be locked out of the tournament. The GotFrag article has an update that suggests the two sides have come to an agreement... but it's interesting to read the player reactions in the Amped article; many of the mid-level players feel betrayed by MLG for daring to make money in a different venue, while the top players seem to think it's WSVG that's pulling something shifty. We'll see how it actually plays out, later today... (Louis Wu 12:06:14 UTC)
November 28, 2006 Link to this post TTL - more than just a pretty gun It's Tied the Leader Tuesday! That means XerxdeeJ stops by our forum to point out all the cool new stuff you can find at TTL this week. This week contains a 22 Questions interview with Dolbex (who'da thunk he wanted to be a tour guide?), a clan profile of the Halo2Junkies (stats rule), and a very cool announcement of the launching of the Tied the Leader Foundation; 30% of the proceeds of store sales (and 100% of direct charitable contributions) collected by the Foundation will be "donated to organizations that insure fighting men and women who are wounded in action receive the extra help they need in rehabilitating themselves to a fruitful and productive life once they return stateside." Nice! Get to buying! (If only their Baseball T's came in XXL...) (Louis Wu 16:47:49 UTC)
November 27, 2006 Link to this post Creo nullus terga dare Laird stopped by our forum last night to announce the release of the trailer for Halo: Unyielding Part 2. It's 47 mb in WMP9 format, 20 mb in QuickTime format - certainly made ME want to see the final product! Update: This movie is mirrored at GamingTV.org, as well. (Louis Wu 17:17:21 UTC)
November 21, 2006 Link to this post Halo 2 Lego Trailer - in Hi-res Several days ago, jester_343 pointed out a video at Google; someone had gone to great lengths to reproduce the original Halo 2 announce trailer (the one released back in August 2002) using Lego bricks. It's an amazing piece - but I was unhappy with the quality, so I contacted the creator - Marshall Brekka of InfalliBull Productions. He was kind enough to give us a higher-res version of the film - one that does his work better justice. You can grab a copy in WMP9 format (28.5 mb) or QuickTime format (29 mb). Compare it to the original - it's beautiful! (In the discussion thread that was spawned by jester's post, RVideo pointed out a vid he'd made - as he calls it, the 'thematic reverse' of this video; it's a flythrough of Turf, modded with Lego textures. Definitely interesting stuff - worth a look, as well!) (Louis Wu 01:31:24 UTC)
November 21, 2006 Link to this post New Info on Halo Wars Coming Soon Interesting... Thunder visited the Halo Wars forums to announce that he's the Community Manager at Ensemble Studios, and will be the liason between the developers and the fans - and that there will be a new update coming in December. Noticed by RedNovember... keep your eyes open! (Louis Wu 01:19:46 UTC)
November 21, 2006 Link to this post Immure 2 NeuroKoNeza stopped by our forum to announce that Immure 2, a sequel to a map created back in September 2005 by himself and Mothergoat, will be released this coming Friday, November 24. He's removed the Wasp, the flying single-person fighter, that unbalanced gameplay in the first version, and replaced it with another new vehicle - a Flame Hog (a custom warthog with a massive flamethrower on the back). Lots of pictures are available. (Louis Wu 01:17:47 UTC)
November 17, 2006 Link to this post Halo Interviews on OXM Podcast OXM's Ryan McCaffrey wrote to point out KOXM Episode 39, the latest episode of the Official Xbox Magazine podcast; it's Halo week, so they've interviewed Frank O'Connor and Eric Nylund, and topics of discussion range from the announcements made a couple of days ago to Ghosts of Onyx. Nearly an hour long, playable 14 mb (downloadable or streamable from their site) - good stuff, go listen! (Louis Wu 20:03:27 UTC)
November 16, 2006 Link to this post 1Up puts up THEIR Halo screens Heh - I should check ALL mail before posting. Looks like 1Up decided to go ahead and release all the new assets they have, since they're already out there on the web. (There's been no announcement from Bungie yet about this content, but I'm guessing it'll come today.) Oddly, though the news post says they've released concept art and renders, I can only find the new screens - but maybe that'll change soon. Anyway, thanks to Black Six for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 15:11:39 UTC)
November 14, 2006 Link to this post Bungie Announcement At-GNaT points out that today's Little Gamers comic is Halo-related. (Louis Wu 16:55:59 UTC)
November 11, 2006 Link to this post The Halo-only version of the 1Up Show EGM's Mark MacDonald pointed out that the Halo-specific portion of the 1Up show can be watched via streaming flash (or downloaded, in hi-res form) from GameVideos.com. And I'd like to take this opportunity to announce that I'm a little silly sometimes; I described the Halo content in the first news post of the day - but I was describing the content of Episode 53, not 54. This new one contains video footage of the EGM team in Kirkland (though no onscreen action), as well as interviews with Lars Bakken, Tyson Green, and Marty O'Donnell. Check it out! (Louis Wu 15:55:07 UTC)
October 30, 2006 Link to this post UNSCDF Contest Winners Announced Thanks to Saint, who noticed (heh) that the UNSCDF Fan Fiction Contest winners have been posted; congrats to the 5 winners (including Saint), each of whom will receive a signed copy of Ghosts of Onyx. (Louis Wu 14:17:16 UTC)
October 27, 2006 Link to this post Halo 3 Blowout in LEVEL Deepblue stopped by our forum to announce that LEVEL, a large gaming mag in Sweden, has a huge Halo 3 section in their latest edition (not out on newsstands yet, only subscribers have it at this stage). He discusses some of the biggest bombshells revealed in the story - and if you're the type of person who doesn't want to know any of the surprises before you get to play them yourself, do NOT read this. Two new weapons and a new vehicle are described. (Among other tidbits.) People are demanding scans, so I'll remind the forum now what our general policy is: we will not allow any scans of magazines currently on store shelves to be shown in our forum. If the magazine is so new that it's not even ON store shelves yet, it should be obvious to you that we won't allow it in this case, either. When Issue 8 hits the shelves, probably in early December, if someone has sent along scans of the article, we'll post it then - but not before. (Louis Wu 14:11:33 UTC)
October 21, 2006 Link to this post Hello, Juneau! Over at Red vs Blue, there's a new Public Service Announcement - this one's called 'Planning to Fail', and it discusses what you might do when zombies take over the earth. Currently for sponsors-only, but it should be available for the masses by the end of the weekend. Thanks to darthbob for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 13:10:30 UTC)
