Official Halo 3 Packaging Announcement
TeamXbox has the official Microsoft press release for Halo 3's commercial packaging - and some pretty big changes can be found in it. There are still three editions - Standard, Limited, Legendary - but price and contents for the Legendary and Limited Editions are quite different from the older information we got at the end of last year. (The Standard edition is the same - ERP of $59.99, box contains only the game.) The Limited Edition is still $69.99 ERP, comes in a metal box, and contains the game, along with the Making Of Halo 3 DVD that was promised earlier - but now it also contains a book:
[...] a special "Halo" fiction and art book. A must-have for "Halo" collectors and a source of invaluable and exclusive information, the piece is an elaborate and compelling guide to the species and factions that inhabit the worlds of the "Halo" universe, with never-before-seen art and story elements that expand and illustrate the depth and breadth of the "Halo" fiction.
The Legendary Edition is now listed with an Estimated Retail Price of $129.99 (up from the anticipated $99.99) - it still contains the helmet case, the game, and the Making-Of DVD, but instead of two discs containing cutscenes and fan creations, there is now ONE extra disc (containing both), along with 'an illuminating collection of original "Halo 3" storyboard art from artist Lee Wilson, depicting key moments and pivotal scenes from the epic cinematic production of "Halo." ' Interesting changes; I'm not thrilled with the Legendary price bump, and I'm REALLY not thrilled that the Legendary Edition is not a superset of the editions below it (for that rabid Halo fan who needs EVERYTHING Bungie releases, Halo 3 is going to cost $200 - because the Limited Edition contains a book not present in the Legendary pack)... but it's still early days, things might change again. 300 - Again
A couple of days ago, Vegechan stopped by to point out that he'd recorded a new Halo/300 vid. So far, we've announced 4 different trailers that tie Halo to the movie '300' (one | two | three | four). I didn't think I'd be linking any more - but Vegechan's version really hit home for me. Solidly done, entirely from stock footage. Froman Productions - Up and Running
AnTi PRO stopped by yesterday to announce the launching of Froman Productions, a new machinima website. As our submission guidelines suggest, we no longer announce website launches on our front page - unless there's something there we can point people to... and in this case, there is. They actually created a number of vids before announcing the launch, so that they'd have more than a shell and a 'Coming Soon!' to show you - swing by and grab what sounds good to you. Episodic Halo Series, from Peter Jackson
Over at Gamasutra, there's some intriguing information about the Peter Jackson/Bungie project first announced at X06 last fall. Details are sketchy (okay, that's almost an overstatement), but it looks like there will be at least two episodic gaming series, with at least the first being set in the Halo universe. Halo 2 - The Most-Played XBL Title
Microsoft recently announced that the Xbox Live service hit 6 million members (several months sooner than they expected), and they listed the top 10 Live titles (by number of unique users) - Halo 2 is at the top of the list. Halo Comic Team Announced
New York Comic Con is going on right now - and one of the announcements that was made during the Cup O' Joe panel last night was that the creative team that will bring the ongoing Halo comic to life had been decided on - Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev. National Halo 2 Tourney at Play N Trade
Play N Trade, a national video game retailer chain the US, has announced a National Halo 2 tournament, to kick off on March 3. Local winners snag a copy of Halo 3 when it's released, and a $200 certificate. The overall winner gets an LCD TV and $1500 in credit. Entry fee is $10 ahead of time, $15 at the door. Halo Everywhere Winners Announced
On December 1, the Halo Everywhere contest went live. In 2 months, there were 700 artists submitting 1200 entries, and half a terabyte of bandwidth was burned through. MLG 07 Schedule Up
MLG has posted their 2007 Pro Circuit cities and dates - the playoff and national locations are still to be announced, but the regular season will take place in North Carolina, New Jersey, Texas, Illinois, and Florida from mid-April through the end of September. The Spartan Effect, Episode 4
Eddie, from Rookie Rabbit Productions, sent us a note to let us know that The Spartan Effect, Episode 4 is now online. It's funny, it's well-filmed, go download it. (If you've missed the first three eps, we announced them here: One | Two | Three.) Because their downloadable versions are hosted at Filefront (which sort of makes you jump through hoops to download), and because the QuickTime versions are encoded with h.264 (which is fantastic - but only on higher-end processors), we're offering local downloads for all four flavors of the episode, with S3Pro-encoded QuickTimes. Grab it in High Res (640x360): WMP9 (55 mb) or QuickTime (58 mb), or Low Res (320x180): WMP9 (26.3 mb) or QuickTime (24.5 mb). Halo ActionClix
eMouse noticed that WizKids Games has announced a new collectable miniatures game called Halo ActionClix. (They already make HeroClix and HorrorClix.) There will be more than 80 unique miniature figures from the Halo universe - which will include 'preview content from Halo 3'. Release date is set for September 2007 (which might imply, as Stuntmutt pointed out, that the release date for Halo 3 will be LATER than that - otherwise, it wouldn't be 'preview content', would it?). Mad World
Hellhawk stopped by this morning with an announcement of a new vid - a music video set to Gary Jules' version of Tears for Fears' 'Mad World'. Very nice synching of Halo action to the song's powerful lyrics - nice job! I was unhappy with the interlacing on the video, though, so I fixed it. You can download the original in Hellhawk's forum post (QuickTime, 34.6 mb), or you can grab versions from us (QuickTime, 34.3 mb or WMP9, 32.4 mb). For reference - info on the Halo 3 Legendary Edition
It's been more than 2 months since the various flavors of Halo 3 were made public - it's been known since early November that $60 would buy you the bare game, $70 would buy you the 'special' edition (game plus bonus disc(s)), and $100 would snag you the Legendary edition - helmet and 4 discs, including the game. Paul Russell stopped by today to point out that Wal-Mart's listing has all the info you need for that Legendary edition - nice photos of the helmet and case, plus details about the included discs. (They list it as 'In Stock', which is pretty silly - but then, it's labeled as Wal-Mart No. 000000000, so as soon as it's assigned a SKU, it'll likely have a more realistic ship date. Maybe not a REAL ship date - we won't know that until Bungie announces it - but more realistic than 'now'.) This is worth posting so that there's a place to point to when folks ask about what is included in the Legendary edition. Update: Frankie warns that these pictures are just the prototype; the real thing is 'waaaaay better, more detailed and has much fancier textures.' Okay, now I'm worried that I didn't preorder...
