Are You Big Enough?
Blackstar is setting up a lanfest in Andover, MA this summer - on a massive, massive screen. (See this forum post for some details.) Attendance is pretty limited... but you can (at the very least) watch the new promo vid for the event. Just under a minute long, 9.1 mb, QuickTime format. I think I saw footage of me dying in there... The Matrix flavor is great, and the vid's got me pumped up for the day! Update: we seem to be significantly slowing down blackstarproductions.net, so we've tossed a copy of this vid up at Mythica.org. Grab whichever copy works faster for you! (Louis Wu 14:55:46 UTC)

Bungie Trivia Contest - all done!
It was up a bit longer than it was supposed to be - blame deanero and his fine hospitality for the 12-player lanfest that ran for 5 or 6 hours this evening. The Bungie Trivia contest has been taken offline at this point, and we'll be announcing the winners as soon as SketchFactor gets back to Seattle and settles in - probably Monday. Over 300 people took the online test - with almost a third of those attempting to take it more than once. (Shame on you! :) ) Thanks for your participation... and again, the winner(s) (and their prize(s)) will be announced soon! (Louis Wu 09:10:17 UTC)

Capture the Flag Strategies - on film
After a small dry spell with respect to movies, we've gotten a truckload submitted in the last couple of days - we'll start you out with something small. This one's from Maverick J, a trickster who's been around for a bit (but only recently active in the HBO community). It's called CTF Flag Getting 101 Part 1, and it's available in both WMP9 format (7.2 mb) or QT format (11.8 mb) from Mythica.org. (Both versions are also available from the Psyjnir Complex Hotline server, as well.) It'll show you a couple of down and dirty tricks for grabbing a flag on several levels (Battle Creek, Hang 'em High, Sidewinder) that you might not have known about. At least one of these is explicity forbidden in most of the lanfests I participate in (it requires climbing out of the map), but all of them involve nothing but some fancy footwork (and teamwork); there are no mods at play here. Worth a watch! (Louis Wu 19:16:45 UTC)

Dead Rabbits - on film
Whoa. Massive film by Blackstar - it's a loving reconstruction of 'Dead Rabbits', a LANfest held here at HBO HQ a week and a half ago. It's nearly 7 minutes long, and 63 megs big. We'll work on mirrors (I'll put a copy up at Mythica this morning) - if you have bandwdidth to spare, feel free to let us know! Update: There's now a copy at Mythica. (Louis Wu 12:42:54 UTC)

Quick Wrap-up... and GURPS news
Another day... another lanfest in the past. Apologies for the sparse updating yesterday, but there were 26 Halo fanatics here yesterday, from as far south as mid-New Jersey and as far north as the Massachusetts/New Hampshire border... 5 states were represented, and the carnage was nonstop. Mostly the games were just for the heck of it, but we did have one 2v2 Team Slayer tournament running during the fest. Congrats to the winners, Geeoff and Tom! Back on the Halo news front, Subnova has received a damaged, but readable, image of a proof of the cover of the Halo GURPS manual. Curiouser and curiouser... (Louis Wu 16:56:14 UTC)

Halo: Ringworld... almost
poena.dare, man-about-town, has discovered a very interesting tidbit of chatlog from Larry Niven's website, in which he discusses the fact that he was approached about writing a Halo novel (and that he turned down the invite). Now that would have been an interesting news post by Louis Wu, wouldn't it have? pd also had this to say:

I will not be at the WCG 2003 Tournament.

I will not be at the Michigan LANFest.

I had nothing to do with Haloplayers being down.

I am NOT Bungie Studios! Bungie Studios are bungie.com.

It is unclear how much of this is true. (Well, the Niven bit is, at least.) (Louis Wu 23:13:44 UTC)

Michigan LANFest has cool prizes
The Grand Rapids Frag Pile had another LAN party recently, called SWAMPCANDLE. (There was a small contest on the Frag Pile's Seventh Column chapter site concerning this image of the prize trophy... but it's over now. A larger version of the image is available on the contest page, should you want to play along.) What you should take away from this is that some gaming groups put together some pretty dang cool trophies for their players! (poena.dare, living in a dumpster in Arequipa, Peru, was too far away to attend this fragfest.) (Louis Wu 20:45:39 UTC)

Interested in a lanfest?
A group of halo players that gets together every Saturday night is looking to recruit players for their lanfests. The only problem is... nowhere in the email I was sent, OR on their website, do they list where they are! The website mentions gatherings in both Ecourse and Plymouth - both towns in Michigan. However, according to MapQuest, they seem to be almost 200 miles apart... so I'm not sure about that. Anyway, you can visit their website: the Dust and Echoes Halo League, and if what you see interests you, drop 'em some email and see where they are. Update: Moloch points out that according to their FAQ, they're in southeast Michigan, in the greater Detroit area. (The FAQ link is on the RIGHT side of the top image, and wasn't visible to me, in my 800-pixel-wide browser window... one of the dangers of framed sites.) (Louis Wu 16:11:30 UTC)

We love you, Brian.
Quick update from the guy who doesn't post... too often, on the Brian Morden Memorial Halo Lanfest, held last night at the Morden house. Sounds like it was the place to be. (Louis Wu 07:23:49 UTC)

Halomania!
Team Overkill, a Staten Island Halo clan, is planning a Halo LAN fest on September 22nd. These guys are good; if you're within driving distance, it'll be worth the trip. You can read more about it on their Seventh Column chapter site. (We don't normally post small lanfest notices like this... but this is one I'd love to make myself (I can't, unfortunately; that weekend is fully booked) - these guys put on a good show. :) ) (Louis Wu 21:54:08 UTC)

Work or Die posted
Heh - the family edge wins out. A new video has been posted at Blackstar Productions - it's called Work or Die, and is a highlight film of a lanfest held right here at HBO HQ a bit over a week ago. 40 megs, 640x480, 3:43 long... with a pretty funny soundtrack. (A few too many clips of me dying, but such is life. Or something.) If bandwidth gets tight over at BSP, we'll find a mirror or two... but for now, check it out there (and enjoy the site's new layout!). I learned about this from Rampancy.net. HNC Finals in print
A quiet day at HBO yesterday, becauuse we had a 14-hour Halo lanfest going on here. (Well, okay, the first two hours were pretty slow, because we had some configuration problems that turned out to be user error... but there was a lot of gaming, anyway. :) ) In the meantime, mnemesis finished his writeup of the Halo National Tournament finals, and they've been posted (along with pictures) over at Bungie.net. Check it out! (Louis Wu 14:37:05 UTC)

More HNC thoughts
d!s-CreTion (enraged on bungie.net, who's gonna be kicking my butt at an HBO Junkies lanfest in a couple of weeks) has written up his Halo National Tournament experiences - he's in the Regionals! Check out the details. (Louis Wu 23:11:48 UTC)

Lanfest writeup
Team Overkill, a group of four sharpshooters from Staten Island, have put up the first writeup of the end-of-Macworld Lanfest sponsored by the NYC Bungie-holics. You can find it linked from their Clan site... or you can cut to the chase and visit the Events page directly. These guys kicked ass and took names. Go read about the carnage! (Pics, too.) Blackstar Productions produces
Brian Josselyn, aka Blackstar, has put together a couple of movies for your viewing pleasure. The first is a trick with relatively far-reaching implications - what are the limits on projectile flight? (This has been added to the Tricks queue, as well.) You can find some interesting discussion about this movie on our forum. The second movie is a highlights reel of a lanfest held right here at HBO HQ last weekend - we called it 'Freedom to Kill', and there was quite a lot of that. Brian's movie combines halo footage with some live voice action from the game, and some inspiring music choices - it weighs in at 30 megs (QT5 format), so be careful with it! (If demand is high, we'll rustle up some mirrors for this puppy.) (Louis Wu 16:15:59 UTC)

Movies, and an explanation
News is backing up a little - the HBO Junkies have been having a weekend-long lanfest (started Friday evening, we're just getting going again today after knocking off at 3 am last night), so news has been sparse... but there are a couple of movies for you anyway today. First up is yet another addition to Warbow's Bottom of the Maw Jump Trick - Halo Wannabe has submitted a movie showing a much more reproducible route to the bottom. (This film is 2.7 mb.) For a wider audience, Skavenger_s7 (and Renegade Theatre) have melded Robert Redford and Halo in a beautiful way - check out The Castle, a 4.7 mb, 60-second short. Enjoy the vids, enjoy the day! We'll be back soon. (Time to start shooting again...) (To all content submitters - we'll get to your stuff as soon as we can. Please don't send new copies, thinking we didn't get it. Thanks!)

New movies from the fanfest
Whew - the fanfest is over, and what a lot of fun it was! There will certainly be descriptions forthcoming (if there haven't been already - I haven't had time to read the forum) - but in the meantime, we'd like to release a bunch of videos that made their debut tonight. There are a bunch of mirrors for each film, but we're always happy to hear of more! Mirror pages will be set up as soon as I get back to HBO HQ - for now, though, the links are here.

  • HaloST3K - Patroclus' homage to Mystery Science Theater 3000, with appropriate Bungie footage. In the spirit of A**hole...
Small (240x180, 2 mb) - bungie.org, That Weasel Television
Medium - Low (320x240, 6 mb) - bungie.org, That Weasel Television
Medium - High (320x240, 10 mb) - bungie.org, That Weasel Television
Large (640x480, 16 mb) - bungie.org, That Weasel Television
  • Fragfest: Unleashed - a music video full of fantastic lanfest footage, very well set to music; some really incredible flag kills here.
320x218, 17.2 mb) - bungie.org, That Weasel Television
  • Maw 700 - Patroclus: Director's Cut - A reformatted version of an entry to the Maw 700 contest - with more cool stuff.
320x240, 20.1 mb) - bungie.org, That Weasel Television
  • Hurricane Halo - a re-release of a fun movie, with cleaned-up audio, and two extra sound clips.
320x240, 24.0 mb) - bungie.org, That Weasel Television

Apologies for the unorthodox format; I don't have my standard tools. (Plus, I haven't slept in days...) (Louis Wu 08:34:12 UTC)

E3, day 1, through a fan's eyes
deanero posted a brief but mouthwatering rundown of his first day at E3 - lots of Bungie personnel sightings, followed by some very fun-sounding Halo lanfesting, also involving Bungie employees. Who says gaming companies don't enjoy mixing with their fans? (Louis Wu 13:08:21 UTC)

Halo shirt on eBay
The Marathon eBay page maintainer has noticed a Halo t-shirt for sale - someone got one at a lanfest, and never wore it. 3 days left in the auction - current price is $6.50. If you just can't wait until the Store opens... get to bidding! (Louis Wu 17:14:07 UTC)

Halo 'announcement' this week?
Apologies for the news blackout of the last 36 hours - HBO HQ was host to a 15-player lanfest yesterday (guests started arriving at 9 am, we closed the last door around 11 pm), so updating took a second seat. :) In that time, Computer Gaming World columnist Jeff Green put up an article at Gamers.com in which he (once again) called into question the PC versions of Halo. Bungie's own Matt Soell commented on Mr. Green's words on our forum this morning... but we're still intrigued about the Halo 'announcement' happening at a Microsoft party in San Francisco this week. More details when we find them... (Thanks to Cesar Berardini, of TeamXbox, who provided us with the first heads-up on this issue.) (Louis Wu 17:24:45 UTC)

Halo Lan Parties mentioned in ET
Kudos to Freewill, who posted the text to a fun little blurb in Entertainment Weekly this week on our forum. Nice to see Halo lanfests getting recognized as 'the Next New Thing' by a mainstream magazine! (The scan will be posted next week, when this issue is off the shelves.) (Louis Wu 21:32:58 UTC)

Tweeter LANfest described
Lophan has posted a Halo @ Tweeter Day postmortem on our forum, detailing the goings-on this past weekend of the Philly Halo Anonymous chapter of the Seventh Column... if you weren't there, you missed up to 15 players fragging each other on huge bigscreen HDTVs for over 6 hours. (Freewill, another attendee, posted a couple of pics recently.) Wow... a 2 hour, 6x6 CTF game... ouch. Go read it! (Louis Wu 03:00:47 UTC)

Battle of the Bay
Heh - take your lanfest to the Next Level. The Bay Area Halo Players Group have put together a pretty slick website for the Battle of the Bay, an upcoming lanfest in San Francisco. They're looking for 48 Halo players to participate - they've got Bungie-supplied swag to give away, and the Official Xbox Magazine is talking about filming some footage for inclusion on their monthly DVD. The only catch? It ain't free. (Admission fee is $20, or $15 if you supply hardware). If you live in or near San Francisco, this sounds like a killer event! (Thanks to Rico for the heads-up.)
