Kotaku has announced the winners of their Halo 3 Beta t-shirt giveaway (thanks, madcowjim) - congrats to PostIt-Chief and to Sean Bradley (whose energy sword was featured here just last week). Nice going, guys! (Louis Wu 18:28:19 UTC)
June 5, 2007 Link to this post Emblem Contest Winner Announced Over at Bungie.net, the winner of the Emblem Design Contest (remember?) has been revealed... it's a Pirate Yang to the Flaming Ninja Yin. Thanks, Radiago713 and deadguy71. (Louis Wu 17:53:40 UTC)
June 5, 2007 Link to this post Halopedia FanFic Contest
Wow - two Fan Fiction contests announced in two days. Yesterday, we mentioned one at Halo Wars Heaven - today, we've got news from CommanderTony, of Halopedia, who points out a fan-run one there. As far as I can tell, there aren't any prizes - but just recognition is something, right? (Louis Wu 15:19:49 UTC)
May 26, 2007 Link to this post Zune Giveaway Quick Update Wow. The Zune giveaway was announced just 3 hours ago, and already we have 31 people registered to be able to submit, and two actual submissions. Just wanted to remind everyone, the submission deadline is June 10 - over two weeks from today. There's absolutely no advantage to rushing your entry in now; doing so locks you out of making changes, of choosing a different subject, of basically putting any thought at all into the idea. Just a suggestion... sleep on it. (Louis Wu 02:12:48 UTC)
May 23, 2007 Link to this post Serious H2V Delay Wow. According to Microsoft's Life Cycle Support page, Halo 2 for Windows Vista won't be available until July 4, 2007. That's a heck of a recall! Thanks, Aj Collins. Update: TheGhost writes to say that that page has been up for at least a month, and so probably has no relation at all to the current recall. He also says that folks at h2vista.net are already well along in their efforts to unlock the editing kit, and new maps are already being created. Good to hear! Update 2: We now have an official response from a Microsoft spokesperson: "Halo 2" for Windows Vista did not release to retailers on May 22, as previously announced and will now ship from manufacturers on May 31. "Shadowrun" will be the first game to debut the highly anticipated Games for Windows - LIVE system on May 29. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our customers. That's much better than July 4! (Louis Wu 21:46:03 UTC)
May 21, 2007 Link to this post AMC Winners Announced A bit over a month ago, we mentioned the Affinity Machinima Challenge, a contest put on by the HaloGrid crew. Well, this morning HaloGrid announced the winners in all three categories (seems like the Montage category got dropped) - and impressively, SodaGod, of Machine Enema, took first place in all three categories! (We've already discussed two of his entries - Omicron won for 'Action', and Bad Soda won for 'Comedy' - add to that 'Hush Little Baby' as a (disturbing but also compelling) music vid, and he's got a clean sweep. The second place finishers (Drunken Dog's 'Staring at the Sun' for music, GeneticSpartan's 'Evil Lair Commercial' for comedy, and blackouTT's 'Hemisphere' for action) were also quite good - swing by the announcement thread and download 'em all! Thanks, imSuck. (Louis Wu 14:26:08 UTC)
May 16, 2007 Link to this post Halo 2 - coming to XP Wow, here's some interesting news... Falling Leaf Systems has announced that they will be providing compatibility software that will allow Halo 2, an exclusive Vista title, to run on Windows XP. If you order Halo 2 through their site, you'll get the compatibility libraries FREE when they're released (current estimate is July). Not sure how they plan to make any money... but this seems like a pretty cool thing for folks who'd love to play Halo 2, but can't justify the shift to Vista right now. (Louis Wu 14:25:33 UTC)
May 16, 2007 Link to this post Kotaku says September 25 Okay, we don't usually post rumors - but this one might be solid. Kotaku is running a story that the Halo 3 release date will be announced soon - and that, in fact, they have that date already. They're calling September 25 (which would mean that Nevan has won Simpsons Rule's Guess the Release Date contest - but don't get your hopes up TOO high yet, Nevan). When we have confirmation (for or against) this rumor, we'll put it right up. Bungie said 'Fall 2007' - this date makes it into that category - by 4 days. Hmmm... (Louis Wu 02:50:13 UTC)
May 13, 2007 Link to this post Mad Catz to make Halo 3 Faceplates DHalo noticed that Mad Catz has announced that they're going to be making official Halo 3 merchandise - at this point, that means faceplates. (Louis Wu 13:49:36 UTC)

May 9, 2007 Link to this post Halo 2 Vista - delayed until May 22 Last week, we mentioned that game retailers had been adjusting their availability listing for Halo 2 Vista from May 8 (yesterday) to May 23. All week long, European and Australian sites have been contacted by Microsoft with the news that the overseas versions would, indeed, be delayed until May 23 (release date in Europe was May 18 to begin with, so it was only a few days) - but it wasn't until yesterday that that news OFFICIALLY made it here. I can't find an actual copy of the press release, but many sites (like, say, Kotaku and GameSpot) are reporting that Microsoft has officially announced a new date of May 22. Reasons cited are "to make some improvements to the install experience and address other technical issues." While we're mentioning Halo 2 Vista, we should point out a pair of new reviews for it - GameZone loved it, while GameDaily (with their third review) suggests that it's okay, but not good enough to warrant an upgrade to Vista. May 2, 2007 Link to this post Mr. Smith Goes to Washington A couple of weeks ago, it became known that Luke Smith was leaving 1Up, and soon after that, he announced he was being hired by Bungie. Yesterday, Kotaku posted a an article explaining how it all happened. Sounds like Luke will soon be helping to bring Bungie's vision to the rest of us - and for the next few months, that's gonna be pretty Halo-infused. Welcome to our side of the thin green line, Luke!
Thanks to 3Suns, who noticed this yesterday afternoon.

April 12, 2007 Link to this post Squeezing the Customers Over at The Age Blogs (commentary from an Australian newspaper) there's a rant about the two new maps coming next week, and how they're an example of Microsoft's money-grubbing policies. The argument is that since the maps will show up in most matchmaking playlists, and if you don't have them, you won't be allowed INTO those playlists, they constitute an unfair twisting of the purse strings; you MUST pay an additional $4 to continue to play Halo 2 matchmaking. Heh - when the maps were announced, and it was suggested that they might be for the 360 only, I remember complaining that it was unfair that I would be required to pay an additional $400 to buy a 360, just to continue playing Halo 2 Matchmaking. I'm not sure I could line up against an identical argument, even though the money required has dropped by two orders of magnitude (to $4), without sounding like a hypocrite... but the truth is, $4 just doesn't seem like a huge price to pay, to me. Make up your own mind - read the article. (Louis Wu 12:57:44 UTC)
April 11, 2007 Link to this post Energy Episode Five: The Race Simply Greg announced that Energy Episode Five: The Race is now available for download, in multiple flavors. The conflict between the humans and the Aeros has come to a head... (Louis Wu 12:04:11 UTC)

April 5, 2007 Link to this post What Halo has Brought Together... Oh, my goodness. ODSTAdrianFii stopped by our forum last night to announce that 1) she and LazarusCayde have gotten engaged, 2) the engagement is due in large part to their mutual love of Halo (she said we helped! I'm tearing up!), and 3) they're going to try and make it a Halo wedding. I demand pictures! (Congratulations to the both of you!) (Louis Wu 10:07:52 UTC)
April 2, 2007 Link to this post Replace your trashed Halo 2 disc Wow, very cool. Microsoft has announced a Disc Replacement Program - if you have a damaged Xbox 360 disc that they publish, and you own a 360, they'll send you a new one, at a reduced rate. Halo 2 falls into this category - so if you've got a 360, and a non-functional Halo 2 disc... have 'em replace it! (Restrictions, of course, apply. Still a cool deal.) Thanks, 3Suns. (Louis Wu 22:20:13 UTC)
April 1, 2007 Link to this post Halo 3 P.I.M.P. Edition Team Xbox has a story about the 'Power In My Platform' edition of Halo 3, estimated retail price of $999.99 - instead of just a helmet, you get the whole Spartan. Comes with pretty special content - read the story. Thanks, Spec_Ops_Assault (and Wayward Spleen™). (Louis Wu 14:12:06 UTC)
April 1, 2007 Link to this post Halo Zero: Even the name is taken Game Stooge has an article about Halo Zero, an upcoming prequel to the Halo series starring the I Love Bees cast. Joystiq cries foul. Thanks, Spec_Ops_Assault. (Louis Wu 14:07:21 UTC)
March 30, 2007 Link to this post Monkey Sounds and a Crane The Bungie Weekly Update is up way early this week - it's mostly about the new Halo 2 maps announced today, but there's also a bit about a comic convention in Seattle this weekend, if you're nearby. Be very, very happy that Bungie found a way for all Halo 2 players - Xbox and 360 alike - to play these maps! A good read, overall - I'm looking forward to April 17! Readable, as always, on Bungie.net or in our Weekly Update Archive. And Frankie, predictably, was first. (Louis Wu 22:54:16 UTC)
March 28, 2007 Link to this post Shane Kim looks down the road There's an interview with Shane Kim over at Gamasutra; they asked him about projects Bungie might be working on outside Halo 3, and he mentioned the upcoming episodic content announced at X06 last fall: I know that we are working with Peter Jackson on the next installment in the Halo series and that we've had that planning going on, and when one production team is finished with Halo 3, they need to be ready to move on to the next thing. That's really how you manage the life cycle of a studio. He's not really saying very much - but it's nice to know this work is still ongoing. (We haven't heard anything official since that first announcement.) (Louis Wu 16:30:15 UTC)
March 27, 2007 Link to this post That extra code... Okay, I figured that the little bits of text visible in the recent Warthog QuickTime VR were obvious enough that they didn't need a news post - after all, they were pointed out in the same forum post that announced the article in the first place (and quickly corrected with an accurate transcription). However, There are at least three separate threads now about this code - so in the interests of consolidation, here's what we've got: the code reads, in its entirety: X.XX.713 > ghost.713/non-auth/activity ongoing And Beorn did a nice job of putting together a composite image of all the individual frames of the movie. So that's what we know - if you'd like to speculate about what it means, feel free, but please, don't start a new thread asking if anyone knows what it says. (Louis Wu 14:57:10 UTC)
March 25, 2007 Link to this post Early Mourn Veegie and HawaiianPig have teamed up again - their latest piece of artwork is a scene that could be out of the level Halo. A poignant look at the human side of the Master Chief. It was announced by HP in a forum post, and you can also find it on Veegie's gallery page here. Great work! (Louis Wu 17:43:20 UTC)
