1Up continues their flood of Halo 3 coverage - today's entries are up. There's a preview of Forge, an official announcement of Part 2 of Revisiting Halo (which actually went live yesterday), and then Part 3 of that same blog series, which finishes the recap of the first game. Thanks to failedparachute, who pointed it out so succinctly on our forum. (Louis Wu 22:06:50 UTC)
August 16, 2007 Link to this post An analysis of the new Content Usage Rules trigger119 let us know that he's put up an article discussing the new Game Content Usage Rules Microsoft posted recently. It's pretty pessimistic; it looks at how these rules will affect current Halo moviemakers, and what you can no longer do without risking the wrath of Microsoft's lawyers. (To be fair, none of the things in the newly posted rules should be a surprise; most of the "can't"s were no-brainers. What's changed is that Microsoft has explicitly LISTED them as "can't"s, and stated that they'll pursue violators.) Here's hoping it's not as bad as it all seems. Update: we just heard from Steve Gemmiti, of the Cops and Robbers team; they've put up a video response to the rules, as well - you can find downloadable versions of 'Biting the Hand that Smacked You' on their website, or at YouTube. Update 2: trigger119 has mirrored the CAR short, and pointed out that one of the more respected names in the Halo machinima community has announced a cessation of activity.

Bluestrike2 sent us a note to let us know that Mute Radio has relaunched as part of Gaming Lessons. You can read the full announcement on the site - along with Bluestrike2's thoughts on the move. (Gaming Lessons has also relaunched with a new design.) (Louis Wu 15:32:13 UTC)
August 11, 2007 Link to this post Halo 3 Game Fuel TV Ad ActiveCamoElite noticed a mention of an upcoming Game Fuel TV ad, looking like it might feature footage from the Halo 3 Announcement trailer, on the Game Fuel website. Keep your eyes peeled! (Louis Wu 12:09:12 UTC)
August 7, 2007 Link to this post Halo 3 Xbox 360 Priced
Major Nelson has announced a price on the Halo 3 Xbox 360 (and some price drops on the other 360 SKUs) - that puppy will cost you $400, which means you're paying $50 for the goodies that come exclusively with the Halo 3 box. Doesn't sound too terrible... thanks, Duncan. (Louis Wu 14:32:57 UTC)
August 7, 2007 Link to this post Director vs. Halo 3
Apparently, there was (is?) an Xbox 360 Soundtrack Competition - and the Irish band Director has entered it with a song set to video of the Halo 3 Announcement Trailer. Nice work! Thanks, MasterChief2829. (Louis Wu 14:29:42 UTC)
August 6, 2007 Link to this post Piano Solo - now for Finale

August 2, 2007 Link to this post Bungie can't win. A couple of weeks ago, a quote from the then-upcoming EGM article began circulating, and online co-op in Halo 3 was suddenly in doubt. (Before this article had come out, there had been zero information about the mode - and nobody had been talking about it.) The internet seemed to catch fire with the flames Bungie began receiving from all sides - people stated that they'd boycott the game if online co-op weren't present, journalists lambasted Bungie for laziness and lack of consideration for their fans. Bungie asked people to be patient; they didn't want to announce something they couldn't GUARANTEE would be in the final shipping product, so they were keeping their mouths shut. (Online co-op was cut very, very, VERY late in the development cycle of Halo 2, and many people were strongly disappointed.) Finally, this week, they announced that yes, online co-op would be in Halo 3 - and in fact it would be four-player co-op, not just the two-player that was in the original game. And how does the community respond? Well, Cinema Blend says it's a disappointment. It's a tack-on, they say, and there's not even a four-player offline mode. Um... what? (There IS an offline 4-player mode - System Link is supported, no internet needed.) I guess I should be satisfied that they're not complaining that you can't play as Cortana... July 28, 2007 Link to this post No more Mac Halo in the UK
Wow, bizarre. According to MacGold Direct Online (a Macintosh game seller in the UK), MacSoft has discontinued the sale of Halo for Mac in the UK. There's no announcement at all on their site, and it seems to still be available in the US - we've got no decent guesses as to why the UK has been shut out. Thanks, The More Deluded. July 27, 2007 Link to this post Fathom (A Taste) On July 16, we put up an odd picture. Two days later, we did it again. (Different picture.) Well, they were both teasers for Fathom, a new Machinima project from some heavy hitters in the machinima community - SodaGod, BlackouTT, Jamie98s, FantasyCubed. You can find a variety of download links in the HaloGrid announce thread. I've also encoded a local QT version, 30 mb, that's not on that page (yet). BlackouTT says this isn't a trailer - but I'm not sure what else you'd call it; it sets up the series. Maybe a prologue? Mysterious, with great filming, great audio, great effects - very well done piece of work. Go watch it. (Louis Wu 14:22:46 UTC)
July 26, 2007 Link to this post Halo 3 for 3 Sweepstakes Xbox.com is holding a series of sweepstakes - you've got a shot at winning copies of Halo 3, books, schwag - and a Halo 3 Xbox 360 console. Grand Prize winner for the last round gets some amazing stuff, including an "Xbox 360 Halo 3 X-shaped Ibanez Xiphos Guitar with Case" - I'm pretty sure that hasn't been announced yet. Biggest limitations: this is open only to US residents... and you must be 18 or older. If you meet those, though... what are you waiting for? Go register! Thanks, Kiaffex. Update: Apparently, I didn't read the rules carefully enough; registration begins at 9:00 am PDT today - that's three hours from now. Thanks, Luci (though really, without Nomi and goatrope, he'd get no mention). (Louis Wu 12:46:03 UTC)
July 23, 2007 Link to this post GCA Nominees Posted
Nominations for the 2007 Game Critics Awards have been posted (thanks, Kotaku) - Halo 3 is up for 'Best Action Game' and 'Best Online Multiplayer Game', and Halo Wars is up for 'Best Strategy Game'. Winners will be announced July 31. Good luck to both games! (Louis Wu 22:45:59 UTC)
July 19, 2007 Link to this post Halo 3 in Gamespy's E3 Awards
Gamespy announced their E3 Awards - Halo 3 pulled down #5 in the Top 5 360 Games category, and #6 in the Overall Top 10. According to the judges, a strong field of contenders, rather than any shortcoming in Halo 3, kept it from climbing higher on those lists. Thanks, Milhouse. (Louis Wu 13:50:37 UTC)
July 15, 2007 Link to this post A look at campaign trailers over the years
Ever since the E3 trailer was released last week, I've seen occasional 'it doesn't feel right' posts describing the emotions generated by the trailer (usually comparing it to older Halo trailers). Some fans have assumed that this 'offness' is due to a lack of time, or effort, by the crew putting together the trailer - but that crew is Film Oasis, the guys behind quite a few bits of Halo goodness over the years. They're not known for their shoddiness. Narcogen, at Rampancy.net, has looked at ALL major Halo trailers, starting at the 1999 MacWorld trailer, and has come up with a different explanation - the Halo 3 trailers, both the announcement trailer at E3 06 and the current E3 07 trailer, are built in such a way that while fans can get a sense for what Halo 3 might have in store for them, it's hard to build false expectations and hopes based on what we've been given. That is: you won't be hearing a lot of 'but I really wanted to play that level! Bungie cheated me!' complaints, as you did after Halo 2 was released (without the E3 03 level in it). Go read it - it's pretty interesting. (Louis Wu 17:42:56 UTC)
July 11, 2007 Link to this post Marathon. Coming Soon to XBLA.
We didn't mention it last night, because we were afraid it was going to be buried in the Halo flood coming from the press conference... but another game announced during the evening was a title many thought they'd never see - Marathon 2 for Xbox Live Arcade. A spectacular homage to Halo's predecessor, this is being built by Freeverse - and more specifically, the developers working on it have been members of the Marathon community for pretty much as long as the Marathon community has existed. These guys are the hardest of the hardcore, and if ANYONE was gonna touch this property for XBLA... these are the guys you want doing it. You can check out the official page at Xbox.com, but you can get some special info (and a LOT of screenshots) in our gallery right here. (Louis Wu 20:55:21 UTC)
July 9, 2007 Link to this post Halo Unyielding Part 2
Late in the evening on Saturday night (still before midnight on North America's west coast, and therefore still Bungie Day), Laird and crew released Halo: Unyielding Part 2. An impressive piece of work blending Halo machinima, beautiful CGI, and lots of amazing original music, this video is absolutely worth watching. I haven't announced it before now because there were some issues with the presentation; it seemed worth it to me to make sure that this video was delivered in the best possible format. It seems to be there now - and we're hosting a WMP9 version (640x480, 84.2 mb) along with a QuickTime version (640x480, 81.2 mb) - these versions should be up on the H:U website soon, but for now, grab our mirrors. Congrats to everyone involved; this is a gorgeous piece of work. (Louis Wu 18:40:44 UTC)
July 8, 2007 Link to this post The Riot 55
Sigafoos let us know that The Riot 55 is up - 38 minutes and 15 mb of community news, audio from an international gathering, and an announcement of their 2007 Community Awards forum (still plenty of time to nominate people). Go listen! (Louis Wu 21:00:18 UTC)
July 3, 2007 Link to this post Last Ordained Insight Update
Urban Reflex lost his net connection about halfway through the Halo 3 Beta - but he's (sort of) back now, and there's a new update at Ordained Insight. It's an interview with some friends about the beta; give it a read! (By 'sort of back', I mean he stopped by long enough to announce this update, but he's gone again to avoid Halo 3 spoilers, until September.) (Louis Wu 12:44:09 UTC)
June 27, 2007 Link to this post Halo 3 Forza Winning Entries Posted
Bungie has posted the winners of their Forza car modification contest (they originally announced it here) - all four winning cars are pretty danged cool! Check 'em out. Thanks, Radiago713. (Louis Wu 12:37:16 UTC)
June 26, 2007 Link to this post Calamity
Heh - we got word from Trevor Mack that there was a monster montage at Halo3Forum; 22 minutes, 350 mb, gameplay from a host of players. I told him that we generally don't front-page H3F montages unless the request comes from the site owner - and that 22 minutes is pretty ridiculous for a montage anyway. Curious, though, I downloaded it; I mean... 22 minutes? I gotta say - I was floored by the gameplay. Some INSANE kills. Tweak is astoundingly good with noscopes from the back of a Mongoose. Not too long after that, I got a note from Z, asking if we'd announce this very montage - so there you go. If you love montages, and have the time (and disk space) to grab a 350 mb movie... go get Calamity. (Louis Wu 20:14:52 UTC)
June 25, 2007 Link to this post When Admins Forget Bzerker wrote to let us know that Treeskunk Productions has released Outpost: Backwash Episode 0: Before the Beginning - it's available in multiple formats, ranging from 21 to 74 mb. It sets up the mission the Elites have before them... and the interaction between players. Go watch! Update: wow, it's one of those days. We announced Ep0 of O:B back in October of last year; the steel trap is definitely disintegrating. What Bzerker was pointing out to us was not Ep0, but a totally unrelated film on the same page: the TSP Commercial (down at the bottom). Filmed on Desolation, it's a shameless commercial for both Treeskunk Productions and Second-Foundation.net (though it uses humor to take the edge off the selling). Go watch! (Louis Wu 18:15:47 UTC)
June 13, 2007 Link to this post Ode to Mongoose
GamePro has announced the winner of their Halo 3 Zune Haiku contest - I like it, I like it a lot. Thanks again, Dry Ice. (Louis Wu 19:05:18 UTC)
June 13, 2007 Link to this post Forum Floodage - and Halo Unyielding Wow. So the whole AdjutantReflex thing (looks to be another ARG, this time with possible Bungie input) is taking over our forum - it's cool, but it's drowning out all other content. (It's hard to find tidbits now. I'd be willing to put up a temporary forum specifically for this discussion, if I could get some volunteers I trusted to admin it... please let me know if this appeals.) In the meantime, I'm going to try and tease out the goodies that are buried between AR-related posts. The first thing I noticed was an announcement by Laird that a new trailer for Halo Unyielding Part 2 has been released; nice space battle scenes! Take a look. WMP9 format, 15 mb (with a QT coming soon, apparently). Update: Mirrored now at GamingTV, along with a self-encoded QT and a streaming flash version. Thanks, trigger119.
