Audacity Tutorial
QuickTactical has whipped up a basic guide to using Audacity, a cross-platform audio program that lets users record their voice - useful for machinima makers who don't want to record dialogue over XBL. He posted it on Halogrid.com - and we've put up a local mirror for posterity. Give it a read! (Louis Wu 10:41:40 UTC)

OoM Part 5 - The Last Chapter
The final chapter of Out of Mind, Rooster Teeth's sideline into the world of Tex, has been posted for sponsors on their website. Yeah, I know they're the big boys of Halo machinima... but man, the production values are astoundingly high on this one. If you're a sponsor, go grab a copy. If you're not, you should be able to download the low-res versions by Monday. I'm sad it's over! (But happy that Season 5 is about to begin...) Thanks to halofreak1991 for the heads-up. City of Evil Trailer
Clearview Pro sent along a trailer for an upcoming movie called 'City of Evil'. It didn't pass the MPRRS - mostly because more than one reviewer apparently felt that trailers aren't worth releasing, that machinima makers should focus on making movies, not trailers. It missed a passing grade by the slimmest of margins, and that particular rationale seems like a weak reason to fail a film... so I'm hosting it anyway. It does a nice job with modded content - if the final film is as nicely put together as the trailer, this should be a winner! 1:41 long, you can grab it in WMP9 format (19.1 mb) or QuickTime format (20.3 mb). (For anyone keeping track, the footage could be construed as having Halo spoilers in it.) (Louis Wu 12:27:52 UTC)

Desolate
CROSSFIRE's 'Desolate' placed in the top 7 positions of movies that passed the MPRRS - making CROSSFIRE the second machinima creator to have two films in the top 7. It's a sequel to 'Havoc' (which came in third on that list), and it finishes up the story started there with a bleak look at the loss of hope. Gorgeous cinematography, great editing, great sound... this one's fantastic. It's quite long - almost 18 minutes - and weighs in at about 130 mb... but it's worth it. Grab it in WMP9 format (137 mb) or QuickTime format (126 mb). (Louis Wu 02:08:53 UTC)

VOTING NEEDED NOW
Wonga - here's your chance to see Red vs Blue featured on the BBC website! I just noticed a poll on this page (it's about halfway down) pointing out that there are 4 sessions at the Edinburgh Games Festival that can be covered, but only one reviewer - so it's up to the readers to decide which session he attends! Vote for 'Machinima', and you'll get to read a feature of the RT crew. Hurry! (Louis Wu 03:51:18 UTC)

River Styx Two: RAGNAROK
You might remember River Styx, a bit of machinima created by Elnea and OboeCrazy which has the distinction of being the first project to integrate Halo, The Sims 2, and World of Warcraft into one (relatively) seamless whole. Well, they're back - and this time, River Styx Two is even MORE integrated. Check out the movie poster (214k). If you have a Red vs Blue account, you can read Elnea's description of the process here, and OboeCrazy's comments here - but the general gist is that they captured footage in all three games, using a few tricks to make their lives easier down the road - and then that footage was composited in Motion 2 to produce the downloads available below. It's funny, it's well-produced, and it's innovative - you need to download this! (Before I forget - it's a trailer, but not of a movie that will ever be produced. It's a trailer, because Elnea and OboeCrazy felt that trailers contain all the good parts, anyway.) It's 640x480, in WMP9 (37.2 mb), QuickTime (37.5 mb), or DivX 39.5 mb) formats, hosted here... you can also grab the DivX and WMP9 versions on OboeCrazy's site, and Elnea's hosting an iPod version (26 mb). What are you waiting for? (Louis Wu 14:22:31 UTC)

The Last Judgement Trailer
Incogneto45 submitted to the MPRRS a trailer for 'The Last Judgement', a machinima project coming soon. The subject matter isn't very new - a small band of survivors, attempting to stave off destruction by the legions of Hell - but the cinematics are quite good; this one looks to be worth waiting for! The trailer is 2:20 long, and is available in either WMP9 format (24.4 mb) or QuickTime format (26.7 mb). Go watch! (Louis Wu 22:32:48 UTC)

Project Crimson Official Trailer
Back in early July, Metroid05, of the Atomik Films crew, submitted a trailer for Project Crimson, a machinima series they're in the process of making. The MPRRS reviewers liked it, but the instructions we got about hosting were unclear - and Metroid05's email wasn't working. Today, the hosting questions were answered, so we're making the trailer available - both in WMP9 format (43.3 mb) and QuickTime format (43.6 mb). Project Crimson tells the story of genetic experimentation gone bad, and is heavy on the visual effects. The full machinima is due this coming winter. Take a look! (Louis Wu 18:27:32 UTC)

MPs Ep 3: The Cure for Invincibility
Chairleg Productions has released Episode 3 of their MPs series - you can grab it at their site in WMP9 format (38.3 mb), or, since it passed the MPRRS, you can use our mirrors (WMP9 version | QuickTime version). Humor remains dry, storyline remains snappy, effects remain polished and slick. Benedict is certainly the CO you can love to hate! (Louis Wu 15:57:28 UTC)

MPRRS upgrade - more data for moviemakers
In response to some feedback we received from forumgoers, Cybrfrk made some changes to the information submitters get from the MPRRS; it's all an ongoing effort to improve the overall quality of Halo machinima released to the public. We hope you keep using the system! (Louis Wu 18:46:19 UTC)

Originality
QuickTactical and the rest of the Epic Films crew put together 'Originality', a vid that discusses what NOT to do with your next Halo machinima project. They submitted this to the MPRRS - but because of a reviewer who simply didn't get it (and scored it almost 50 points lower than the average), it didn't pass. Luckily, we have two separate scoring algorithms in place - one averages all scores, while the other drops high and low scores; when the outliers were dropped, the movie passed handily. It's rather long (almost 13 minutes), and so rather large - so we're hosting a 'medium quality' version (QuickTactical's terminology) - the WMP9 format is 88.5 mb, the QuickTime format is 89.9 mb. The visual glitches are not a result of the compression, however; they're due to the capture card - you can grab a high-quality version of this film at FileFront (140 mb, WMP9 format) and see for yourself. Bottom line - this film contains a bunch of machinima cliches to avoid; watch it before you make your next film! (Louis Wu 14:41:16 UTC)

QuickTactical's WMM Tutorial
QuickTactical wrote up a pretty comprehensive guide for using Windows Movie Maker - if you're just getting started in Halo machinima, and you have a PC, you DEFINITELY should read this piece. He originally posted it on the HaloGrid forums - but gave us permission to host it here, as well. Awesome stuff - a top-notch resource! (Louis Wu 01:20:40 UTC)

Tetris Forever
Chairleg Productions released Episode 2 of their new series, MPs, this week. This one is shaping up to be amazing - really high production values, including fantastic audio, beautifully-integrated effects, and really smooth cinematography. Humor continues to be high, and character development is really strong. We're helping out with a mirror of the WMP9 version (40.2 mb), and providing a QuickTime version as well (40.6 mb). Check it out! (Louis Wu 12:46:58 UTC)

Prophecy - the official trailer
We usually put up just a couple of copies of movies that pass the MPRRS (a QuickTime version that's generally compatible with versions 5 and up, and a WMP9 version) - but yesterday, a vid passed that simply didn't want to re-encode. Lordstemplar1 submitted a trailer for Prophecy, an upcoming machinima project, in H.264-encoded QuickTime - but attempts to convert it were unsuccessful. I did, eventually, get it into our standard formats - but because I had so much trouble with it, I'm making the original available as well. You can read more about Prophecy on their official website - and you can grab the trailer from us in QuickTime 7 format (26.2 mb), QuickTime 5+ format (25.4 mb), or WMP9 format (19.8 mb). MPs Episode 1: 26th Century Boy
Chairleg Productions has created a number of Halo-based machinima projects - most (all?) have met with critical success. They're funny, they're well-filmed, they've got high production qualities. They've got a new series just beginning: MPs. They submitted Episode 1 to the MPRRS last week - and were given a high passing score. They asked us to hold off on release of this film, though, to allow for more time in making other episodes; we're nothing if not accomodating. It's Thursday, so it's release day for 'MPs Episode 1: 26th Century Boy'. It's funny, it's big and beautiful, and it makes us want more episodes. it revolves around the lives of a team of Military Police who are decidedly unmilitary. We're hosting the WMP9 version (28.5 mb, also available at Chairleg's website) and a QuickTime version (26.7 mb) - grab the one that works best for you! (Louis Wu 13:01:53 UTC)

Oppression Trailer
A few days ago, a trailer for an upcoming machinima called 'Oppression' passed through the MPRRS; it came really, really close to passing. There was a single typo in some of the text, and this typo was mentioned by a large number of reviewers - we got uppity squirrel, the creator, to fix that typo, and we're hosting the vid after all. Looks to be a dramatic film! The trailer is 14.6 mb in WMP9 format, or 14.1 mb in QuickTime format (it's only 2 minutes long). Check it out! (Louis Wu 16:00:34 UTC)

Throw a pitch and win your chance at bat!
Intel is sponsoring a big contest at Machinima.com for aspiring movie makers. Pitch your movie and win a chance to go to Hollywood and make a 3-5 minute short film. The relation to Halo? Consider that the Halo machinima community is large and that I work at the sponsor -- and leave it at that. We recommend you submit your own video-pitch in the form of a Halo machinima. Pwn My Heart
Elnea's done some bizarre parodies in her day... but 'Pwn My Heart' has got to be up there. I ran across this in a recent journal of hers over at Red vs Blue; it was written for a machinima piece we helped host a few months ago, but I never really noticed it there. It's a full-on Country and Western flavored Halo tune - the lyrics will make you groan. (Like Stuntmutt does.) You can listen to it while you read its history and lyrics on her .Mac space, or you can just grab the mp3 from us (2.7 mb). As usual, if we do any damage to her bandwidth, we'll be happy to host the full page. (Louis Wu 12:33:54 UTC)
