Yes, Silverbrin likes playing Halo standing up. Don't ask me why. (Louis Wu 01:01:30 UTC)
April 19, 2004 Link to this post And To All A Good Knee Blackstar has written up a nice thank-you to KP and his family, and put a couple of image galleries online, of yesterday's Knee For All lanfest. I'm sure there'll be other writeups and pics coming - but this is a good start! (Louis Wu 00:18:08 UTC)
April 17, 2004 Link to this post Knee For All Okay, that's it for updates today (at least from the east coast HBO staff contingent) - Miguel, Count Zero and I are joining a dozen others at KP's Knee For All lanfest, kicking off in about an hour. Ah, the beauty of Xbox carnage... (Louis Wu 14:13:31 UTC)
March 26, 2004 Link to this post Lanfest in MA Boonies Trickster and longtime forum resident vshields ash has posted information about an upcoming Halo LAN at his local EB; if you live within driving distance of Lanesboro, MA (near the confluence of the Massachusetts, Vermont, and New York borders), you should consider stopping by the Berkshire Mall on April 17 to join in - you'd get to meet one of the most persistent Halo stuntmen out there. First prize is an Xbox and a Halo 2 coupon. (Fest starts around noon.) Comments can go in this thread. (Louis Wu 15:33:15 UTC)
March 15, 2004 Link to this post Practice all night, tourney all day X Tournaments points out an interesting addition to an upcoming tourney; on saturday, March 27, they're holding a 2v2 tournament at The Game in Smithtown, Long Island. The night before, there's a Lock-In lanfest; show up at 11 pm, LAN all night (the doors are unlocked again at 9 am). The tourney is $40/team, the Lock-In is $15/person. More details can be found at the X Tournaments site. (Louis Wu 11:32:29 UTC)
February 22, 2004 Link to this post Offensive Tetraboxing - on film Blackstar finished his Offensive Tetraboxing lanfest vid, commemorating the massive lanfest held here at HBO HQ a couple of weeks ago. It's over 9 minutes long, weighs in at a massive 93 mb, and is encoded in MPEG4 format. (As Blackstar says, if you can watch the QuickTime versions of the Red vs Blue vids, you should be fine.) Production quality is quite high - I only wish the recording devices (for gameplay) had been on more boxes; the footage he had to work with didn't always show the blast this fest really was. It's currently available at Blackstar Productions, Rampancy.net, Boomerica Enterprises, and files.bungie.org - we'll add more mirrors if bandwidth begins to get tight. You can ASK Black if he's willing to have it encoded in other formats... but I'm guessing the answer's gonna be no; there's a lot of text that wouldn't be readable with any big decrease in bitrate. Comments can go in this forum thread. (Louis Wu 14:46:25 UTC)
February 18, 2004 Link to this post Cold plasma still sticks CYBRFRK wrote up a different kind of reminiscence about the recent Offensive Tetraboxing lanfest that took place here a couple of weeks ago. New (gigantic) pictures... but the meat is in the text. Take a look - this is what HBO is all about. (Louis Wu 04:06:37 UTC)
February 3, 2004 Link to this post More Lanfest stuff Dan Chosich has updated his Tetraboxing reminiscences with a writeup, to accompany his movie. Looks like today's Dan's birthday, too - Happy Birthday, Dan! Update: Blood, as well, has updated his content - there's now a text writeup to go with his pictures on Bloodgulch.com. (Louis Wu 15:07:20 UTC)
February 2, 2004 Link to this post Lanfest pics, revisited More lanfest pics from the Offensive Tetraboxing event this weekend here at HBO: Konrad9 put up a bunch, (GT)Juggler put up some at Halo GT (including a couple of Konrad's shots), Blood put up about 50 shots at Bloodgulch.com, and Have Blue posted his own set (including some early pics of my vandalized car - more stuff was added after that last pic was taken). More as we find 'em! There's a pretty cool shot of the four downstairs projectors at once in HB's collection. Update: Blackstar put up a collection, as well. His movie focus is evident in the preponderance of shots that include the Film Oasis crew - but there are plenty of good people shots. (Louis Wu 14:20:29 UTC)
February 1, 2004 Link to this post First pics - lanfest There are going to be many, many updates about this fanfest - pictures, writeups, the works. I'm sure several of them have already been posted to our forum; I haven't had time to find them yet. I did get a link from Brad Griswald, one of the participants yesterday; you can find it on his 'Not So Late Show' website. Three pages of pics... go look! (Louis Wu 18:51:03 UTC)
January 15, 2004 Link to this post Offensive TetraBoxing I don't have any easy way of pointing this out to everyone who needs to see it - so I'm posting it here. It's irrelevant to most of you, except that (as usual) Blackstar will likely make a cool wrapup vid for everyone to see... but hey, it's good to be the king. The next HBO Junkies lanfest is happening here, at HBO HQ, on January 31. This one has a LOT of Halo community luminaries slated to come... so while access is open to the public, the number of folks I'm gonna be able to handle is MUCH smaller than usual. Please don't be offended if you don't get invited. You will definitely NOT get invited if I don't receive a signup from you - the form is linked in the writeup over at the HBO Junkies 7th Column chapter. Even if I do receive a signup from you, I might STILL have to say no - because my house is only so big. So if you're planning on coming, go sign up now - but don't buy plane tickets until you get a response. (Louis Wu 00:31:35 UTC)
December 17, 2003 Link to this post AYBE II - gettin' ready Blackstar continues the PR campaign on his Summer 2004 lanfest, Are You Big Enough II, with a spiffy movie poster. Whatever else you can say about the man, he definitely has a flair for movie stuff! (Louis Wu 11:30:39 UTC)
December 14, 2003 Link to this post Santa Claws - moist. Wow. Yesterday was spent at a Halo lanfest in New York, hosted by the gracious Miguel Chavez at the Selkirk Gallery in Manhattan. I'm sure there'll be some writeups soon, and nukedude got some pretty good video... but there's a game I want to point out: it was team oddball, rockets, on Hang em High, with one ball and 15 minutes needed to win. The kill numbers were ASTOUNDING. Here was the screen I was playing on (40k) - and I'm adding this one because Jynx, the high kills guy, didn't have enough balltime to make the first one. I'll be slowly working my way through piled-up mail and forum stuff over the course of the day, in between Christmas preparations and dealing with the new snow... but I wanted to say that even though I didn't get home until after 3:30... it was a blast. An absolute blast. (Louis Wu 15:24:51 UTC)
December 11, 2003 Link to this post AYBE II - It's On, Baby. I can't say I'm thrilled with the subtitle, but the event itself has me all aflutter. Blackstar has put up a news post (and a trailer) for Are You Big Enough II, a lanfest planned for Summer 2004 in Andover, MA. Are You Big Enough (the original) was held LAST summer, and featured an enormous 40 foot projection screen for playing Halo on. The trailer is 22.4 mb, in mpeg-4 format (divx-encoded), and shows off Blackstar's mad moviemaking skillz... Thanks to Alexis for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 10:07:11 UTC)
November 23, 2003 Link to this post Pillar of Art - lanfest movie nukedude finally compiled a bunch of footage from the Pillar of Art showing/lanfest last summer in New York City; it's about 10 minutes worth of commentary, gameplay, and artwork from the Selkirk Gallery in lower Manhattan. The movie is in WMP9 format, and weighs in at 32.8 mb. nukedude is hosting it, but if things get out of hand, we'll probably toss up a local copy, as well. I found it pretty interesting - but then, I was there. Check it out! (Louis Wu 18:06:07 UTC)
November 20, 2003 Link to this post Huge New Year's lanfest in Cali Bravehamster writes about a major lanfest being set up for New Year's Eve in Santa Maria, CA (about 3 hours north of LA on the California coast). They're shooting for 90 players, and want the thing to run from noon on December 31 through noon on January 1. Admission is $25, and all the pizza and soda you can eat and drink are included. Check out the Central Coast Frag Fest website for more details! (Louis Wu 10:46:53 UTC)
November 16, 2003 Link to this post Lanfest pics/vids (GT)Juggler has put up a bunch of photos and some low-res vids from the or Inerumnis Lannactionica fest yesterday on his website, HaloGT. Warning - first two vids are of a modded copy of DOA Beach volleyball; the girls are missing some items of clothing. Everything else is pretty clean. (Louis Wu 21:57:55 UTC)
September 1, 2003 Link to this post Summer Slaying video posted Woohoo! Blackstar has posted a huge movie (48 mb, 720x480) showing highlights of a lanfest held here at HBO HQ last weekend. Read about it in this forum post, go pick up the movie at Blackstar Productions. Image quality is up to Blackstar's usual standards. Format is MPEG-4; you'll need the latest drivers for whatever viewer you're using. It's a testimony to how many people we had that in the 3:21-long movie, I'm not in a single game; we had 9 Xboxes running at one point (and only one of them had recording equipment connected to it). Was a rockin' good time, nice to see some of the footage I wasn't playing in! (Louis Wu 17:51:36 UTC)
August 25, 2003 Link to this post My eyes are still burning. Blackstar has put up a nice little photo gallery of yesterday's Summer Slaying lanfest here at HBO HQ. This screen says an awful lot about the skill of Geeoff; give him a pistol, you die. That simple. (I'm having trouble figuring out why SAAACK is 12th, though... I'm not 100% sure what they were playing there.) Comments can be found in this forum thread. (Louis Wu 03:26:59 UTC)
August 24, 2003 Link to this post CPL breaks down $30K Beginning to scrape the sleep out of my eyes - last night ended at 3:30, and started at... hmm, about 9 pm the night before. Decent lanfest, except for melting the wiring in my garage... There's quite a bit of stuff to get to, but it's going to take most of the day to get to it. First up: CPL has announced its prize distribution for the Halo PC tournament at the CPL Winter Event; first prize is $9,000. More numbers and lots of links can be found in CobaltNova's forum post. Good money, if you're skilled enough... (Louis Wu 15:09:12 UTC)
August 23, 2003 Link to this post Slugs. They're all slugs. So here I sit, surrounded by snoring lumps, trying to wake up the overnight guests for the Summer Slaying lanfest starting in about an hour... updates will be pretty sparse today. On the bright side, though, there'll be a LOT of Halo playing. (Louis Wu 12:17:38 UTC)
July 13, 2003 Link to this post Home again - it was definitely big enough Just got home from Brian Josselyn's Are You Big enough lanfest - here's a shot (68K) of some of the folks present, set against the backdrop of the largest screen we used. (No, we didn't play on this surface - there was a real screen that had been stored by the time this picture was taken.) Twelve hours of hi-def Halo goodness - and even though a bunch of the players won't actually be home for a few more hours, it was absolutely, positively worth the drive. More soon, I hope. For now, bed. (Louis Wu 05:07:43 UTC)
July 12, 2003 Link to this post HBO Hiatus As i write this, it's 4:50 am, local time, and in just over an hour, a 2-car caravan filled with 8 psychos - er, Halo players - will head north from here for the Are You Big Enough lanfest in East Bumfu - er, Andover, Massachusetts. There probably won't be too many site updates today, unless Count Zero manages to dig his way out from under that mountain of Jack Daniels bottles he built last night. (Louis Wu 08:50:43 UTC)
July 7, 2003 Link to this post PoA writeup... still coming Dang. Well, I'd expected to get a full writeup of the Pillar of Art gallery showing and the subsequent lanfest up and posted today... but it WAS the end of a holiday weekend. Stuff will be coming... but for those who missed it, Miguel Chavez posted pictures almost in real time yesterday, over at Bungie Sightings: here's the first batch, here's the second. There are also a number of forum threads discussing the activities... more soon, though mostly I'm gonna steal Mig's pics, since he was using the camera far more than I was. Update: Elan Sleazbagano wrote up a short summary for the Team Overkill site. (Louis Wu 02:17:45 UTC)
July 5, 2003 Link to this post A day of fine artwork In less than 5 hours, the Chelsea Studio Gallery, at 515 W. 19th St. in New York City, will open its doors for the Pillar of Art gallery showing. Come by and see the submitted artwork, displayed in this lovely little gallery - the public is welcome until probably around 6 pm. (After that point, the artwork will come down, tables will go up, and a LANfest will be taking place - unfortunately, attendance for this segment is NOT open to the public, simply for space reasons.) We'll also have examples of the signed Lorraine McLees artwork that will be given to all entrants, as well as the little red MC (96k jpeg) that will be sent to Geoff Chang for his Battle Rifle entry. If you're in the New York area, swing by and say hello! (All of HBO's staff except for the Story Page boys will be there, as well, so updates will be rather sparse for the rest of the day.) Pictures will be taken, of course, and a Gallery showing page will be added to the Pillar of Art site at some point in the near future. Update: Miguel Chavez sent along a few shots of the setup work yesterday - they've been put up at the PoA site. More to come! (Louis Wu 11:16:42 UTC)
