An analysis of the new Content Usage Rules
trigger119 let us know that he's put up an article discussing the new Game Content Usage Rules Microsoft posted recently. It's pretty pessimistic; it looks at how these rules will affect current Halo moviemakers, and what you can no longer do without risking the wrath of Microsoft's lawyers. (To be fair, none of the things in the newly posted rules should be a surprise; most of the "can't"s were no-brainers. What's changed is that Microsoft has explicitly LISTED them as "can't"s, and stated that they'll pursue violators.) Here's hoping it's not as bad as it all seems. Update: we just heard from Steve Gemmiti, of the Cops and Robbers team; they've put up a video response to the rules, as well - you can find downloadable versions of 'Biting the Hand that Smacked You' on their website, or at YouTube. Update 2: trigger119 has mirrored the CAR short, and pointed out that one of the more respected names in the Halo machinima community has announced a cessation of activity. (Louis Wu 15:19:15 UTC)

Game Content Usage Rules from MS
Laird noticed that over at Xbox.com, Microsoft has posted their Game Content Usage Rules, spelling out what their game content can, and cannot, be used for. For the most part, it's great news; there's now an official policy in place stating what you need to do in order to legally use footage from, say, Halo in a fan creation - no more worrying that you're skirting the law, or that the MS legal team will come down on you like a ton of Brutes. However, some of the rules might give Halo machinima makers pause; there are, for example, rules like this:

You can't add to the game universe or expand on the story told in the game with "lost chapters" or back story or anything like that.

As I think back about some of the best machinima I've seen, an awful lot of it 'adds to the game universe' - does this new policy mean that these projects will have to be taken down? (Louis Wu 13:33:48 UTC)

2160 AD Trailer
ODST Epsilon stopped by our forum recently to point out a trailer for a new machinima series, '2160 AD'. It focuses on a section of Halo canon that's only been mentioned a little bit - they're trying to stay true to the info that's out there, while still making an entertaining movie. The trailer suggests they've got an interesting project on their hands. If you'd rather watch it on YouTube than via the download link he put in to his post, you can do that. Haven Teaser
BlackouTT let us know that he's working on a new machinima project, entitled 'Haven'. He's released a teaser, which we're mirroring in both QuickTime (20.4 mb) and WMP9 (17.3 mb) formats. Great effects - looks to be an interesting project! Check it out. (Louis Wu 15:56:26 UTC)

Alexander Winn talks to GTV
trigger119 sent word that another in GamingTV's Interviews in Machinima series has now been posted - go read about Alexander Winn, of Edgeworks Entertainment. He talks about The Codex, the Heretic, and moviemaking in general. Good read! (Louis Wu 18:36:37 UTC)

Interviews in Machinima #9 - Major.Dump
GamerTV has put up an interview with Richard Boisvert, aka Major.Dump, discussing how he got into animation, and what he's got in store for the future. Check it out, and thanks to trigger119 for the heads-up. (mnemesis 05:24:12 UTC)

Fathom (A Taste)
On July 16, we put up an odd picture. Two days later, we did it again. (Different picture.) Well, they were both teasers for Fathom, a new Machinima project from some heavy hitters in the machinima community - SodaGod, BlackouTT, Jamie98s, FantasyCubed. You can find a variety of download links in the HaloGrid announce thread. I've also encoded a local QT version, 30 mb, that's not on that page (yet). BlackouTT says this isn't a trailer - but I'm not sure what else you'd call it; it sets up the series. Maybe a prologue? Mysterious, with great filming, great audio, great effects - very well done piece of work. Go watch it. (Louis Wu 14:22:46 UTC)

Twisted Shadows Trailer
eternalscrappy made a trailer for a machinima project he doesn't plan on actually making. It's called Twisted Shadows, and I liked it - I'd love to see the final product. (Yes, I understand that there isn't one.) Local mirrors (WMP9 and QT) are in this post. (Louis Wu 13:53:08 UTC)

Wait - what's wrong with a used handgun?
Tied the Leader, absent these past three weeks, is back with a new update - a couple of new articles for your reading pleasure. 'Geekery Unyielding' discusses XerxdeeJ's MASSIVE role in the recent 'Halo Unyielding' machinima (what the heck does 'bearing 342' MEAN, anyway, in outer space?), and 'Do you know where your Xbox has been?' looks at Microsoft's new practice of banning consoles for life for certain infractions (and in so doing, compares 360s to cotton swabs and plungers). Fun reads, both. Thanks, XerxdeeJ. (Louis Wu 15:16:06 UTC)

Halo Unyielding Part 2
Late in the evening on Saturday night (still before midnight on North America's west coast, and therefore still Bungie Day), Laird and crew released Halo: Unyielding Part 2. An impressive piece of work blending Halo machinima, beautiful CGI, and lots of amazing original music, this video is absolutely worth watching. I haven't announced it before now because there were some issues with the presentation; it seemed worth it to me to make sure that this video was delivered in the best possible format. It seems to be there now - and we're hosting a WMP9 version (640x480, 84.2 mb) along with a QuickTime version (640x480, 81.2 mb) - these versions should be up on the H:U website soon, but for now, grab our mirrors. Congrats to everyone involved; this is a gorgeous piece of work. (Louis Wu 18:40:44 UTC)

Interviews in Machinima 8
trigger119 let us know there's a new 'interviews in Machinima' episode for your perusal; this one is a discussion with Laird, who has created the 'Halo: Unyielding' series, among other things. Go see what makes him tick! (Louis Wu 12:30:06 UTC)

Mario vs. Spartan
trigger119 sent word of Mario vs. Spartan, a short machinima with a very well-done battle scene between Mario and a Halo 2 Spartan. It's only a few megs - go grab it! (If you're curious about the new TLD for GamingTV, read this post.) (Louis Wu 21:50:07 UTC)

Part One.
Skavenger, unhappy that he's been out of the Halo news for so long, has whipped up a really cool piece of machinima. Oh, wait, that's right... he's only really capable of mediocre films. Unwilling to foist that sort of work on you, he's fallen back on his old favorite - a puzzler. This one starts as a word search - but that ain't how it ends... go see what you can do with it. C'mon, Skav needs the attention. (Thanks to Morningstar for posting it - Skav's smart enough to know that when he gets near the forum, things start breaking.) (Louis Wu 13:02:01 UTC)

Machinima Finalists Reduced
Unfortunately, it's come to light that two of the machinima finalists in the Zune Giveaway had been released already on the web - one of them almost two full years ago - and so we've had to pull them. Apologies to those who've already voted for them. Here's hoping the next contest we run, folks actually pay attention to the rules. (Louis Wu 03:22:21 UTC)

Videotaping your man blogs
Major League Gaming has expanded into Canada! MLGCanada.com opened today - you can check the press release at MLGPro.com, GameBattles or Marketwire, or a story on CTV's Canada AM - or just check out the new site. There's tons of new content already - including a new vid from longtime machinima favorites Fire Team Charlie (check for it in the 'Featured MLG Videos' list on the front page). Thanks, Andrew. Sometimes, The Internet Makes Me Sad.
Wow... I'm pretty discouraged today. We have a lot of company this weekend (a half-dozen people from two separate branches of the family), so I haven't been near a computer for a while... but when I checked this afternoon, I found several dozen emails casting aspersions on every single entry in the Montage section of our Zune giveaway. Videos that had been displayed elsewhere before the contest, videos that included clips from existing films, one person even claimed that 3 of the 7 videos contained footage from his public fileshare space during the beta (this, of course, is totally unverifiable at this point). More people seem to be looking for ways to disqualify entries than seem to be interested in the contest itself. I'm not sure how to handle this; I have no doubt whatsoever that if we disqualified every entry, and put up 7 NEW films, we'd get the same collection of emails. I have no doubt that some of these accusations are true. I have no doubt that some are NOT true. And I know that we're halfway through the voting on this phase. I feel as though the whole montage section has been tainted; I don't know how to fix this. I'm going to let the voting continue on the 7 entries we have right now, and then I'm going to disqualify any films I can PROVE have violated our rules - and the prize will go to the remaining entry with the highest score. This is not ideal, but I can't think of a better way to handle this without scrapping the section entirely. Here's hoping the parody and machinima sections go better. (Louis Wu 17:30:40 UTC)

The Forsaken (a Halo 3 Horror Film)
Time Glitch stopped by to point out 'The Forsaken', a new machinima from Flem Productions - it's a cool little story about MIAs/KIAs, nicely filmed in the Halo 3 Beta. Lots of links in the forum post. Go grab a copy! (Louis Wu 20:46:28 UTC)

Anything Goes - Last Chance!
Adam Kovic, over at Machinima.com, pointed out a page containing 40 entries to their Halo 3 Anything Goes contest - voting starts in 2 days, so you still have a tiny bit of time to get an entry in and be eligible to win a free copy of Halo 3! (We first mentioned this contest last month - the deadline has moved up since then.) (Louis Wu 20:49:23 UTC)

Fear of Google, and Machinima-making Cats
Very cool. Linnea and OboeCrazy were interviewed by Luke over at Bungie.net - ostensibly because of their unsettling 'I Want Master Chief' - but the interview touches on many, many subjects; go learn a little more about these women! (Maybe you'll figure out what drives them.) Thanks, halosavior. (Louis Wu 23:14:45 UTC)

Shadow of the Day
trigger119 sent us a link to Shadow of the Day, a new video from HaloGrid's blackouTT. Tells a solid story with nothing but action, and some subtitles; cinematic effects are really well-done. For all the people who say "I don't have good voice actors, I can't make good Halo machinima" - watch this, you'll find out how wrong you are. (Louis Wu 22:34:14 UTC)

Deus Meus (Spartan Battle Prayer)
A couple of years ago, Elnea created a beautiful song for inclusion in a machinima series being created by some friends. Things changed, and the machinima got shelved... so she now has permission to release this song to the public. It's powerful moving. Go listen. (As always, if this note does something terrible to her bandwidth, we'll put up a local copy.) (Louis Wu 16:21:17 UTC)

Great article at Austin360.com, focusing on the 100-episode run of Red vs Blue, coming to an end in the next few weeks. It includes a look back on the influence RvB has had on the machinima genre, as well as some of the best moments in the series. Give it a read! Thanks, aaronspuler. (Louis Wu 21:53:32 UTC)

GTV Update
We got word from trigger119 that there's lots of new content at GamingTV.org; there's a Director's Cut of blackouTT's Hemisphere, a video called 'Snowblind' showing Halo 3 Beta gameplay from blackouTT as well, and a new section being fleshed out - Moviemaking Tutorials, where you can find tips and tricks from Halo machinima creators. Check it out! (Louis Wu 18:17:40 UTC)
