Monopedal Mayhem
Okay, that's pretty much it for me today - I'm off to KP's for a LANfest. No more online stuff today, I don't think! He's said that the KPcam will be on all day - though right now, all you get a view of is his deodorant. And maybe a wig? I can't tell. Dang. Anyway, no more updates before tomorrow... enjoy your weekend! (Louis Wu 15:29:35 UTC)

...and the salsa was to die for.
The highlight of E3 this year for many of us was actually not part of E3 - it was the party at Deanero's house on Friday night. Originally dubbed 'Plasma Fiesta', its name seems to have morphed to 'D3' - Dean's Desserts and Deathmatch. There's a great writeup of the party, complete with pictures and lessons that can be learned for your own lanfests, over at Bungie.net - and never let it be said that SketchFactor doesn't take every opportunity possible to rub in the fact that Frankie missed the salsa at this year's event. Go read! (Louis Wu 02:37:25 UTC)

Synide's E3 Wrapup
Synide wrote up his experiences at E3 last week over at synide.net (a FANTASTIC read) - and excerpted the plasma fiesta lanfest portion for posting on our own forum. The most interesting part of the excerpt for me - the realization, by someone deeply enmeshed in the competitive scene, that competitive gametypes with people who aren't part of that culture aren't nearly as fun. I realize he'll never convince the hardcore on either side of the issue - but for all the THINKING people, this is something worth reading. There's also a short, very dark video, showing the end of Round One of the ice-cream-eating contest (and why they all brain-froze before it was over). (Louis Wu 14:22:35 UTC)

Salsa, Ice Cream, and Halo.
I dropped a writeup of last night's E3 Plasma Fiesta LANfest onto our forum - I had a really good time, and saw a LOT of people I either hadn't seen for a while or had never actually met in person; a perfect ending to a nice E3 week. Here's hoping some of the other participants join in with their own comments! (Louis Wu 19:21:34 UTC)

An almost-forgotten promise... realized
9 months ago, we wrapped up a contest here at HBO that really captured the spirit of what makes the Halo community strong. Going Nowhere Fast was a chance for folks to show how fast they could race through Halo - straight speedruns, anything was allowed except modded Xboxes. We received dozens of entries, but there could be only one winner per level - and given the size of the films, we simply couldn't afford to release ALL runs. We promised a highlights video, showing the best bits from all the entries (rather than just the winning entries)... but real life and the demands of this website conspired to keep that promise from being realized. Well... once again, the community has come through. Cody Miller, who participated in the contest (and won two of the levels) came to HBO HQ for a lanfest in early April, and while he was here he picked up a dozen (more?) VHS tapes and a 160GB hard drive filled with GNF content. He did what I didn't have time to do - and he did it with s7yle. (This reel is lightyears beyond what I could have done.) The final product is eleven and a half minutes long, and in hi-res format weighs in at over 130 mb. We're going to release this via BitTorrent first, because 130 mb is pipe-killing. After the initial rush has died down, we'll put up versions for direct download; they'll be in the same form factor as the original GNF releases (480x360), and will save you 50 mb or so in downloads. Given that some of the original footage was pretty lousy, you might even be better off waiting for the smaller version... but the hi-res parts of this vid are great in hi-res. We're seeding it with quite a bit of initial bandwidth, so downloads should be snappy. You can grab torrents for a QuickTime version (138.7 mb) or a WMP9 version (133.9 mb) - please, leave your client open after download! And please - drop by our forum to let us (and Cody) know what you think of the work! (Louis Wu 14:13:31 UTC)

He's late. Blame Crux.
One more set of pics from last weekend's Resurrection lanfest - Count Zero has posted his photo montage. Nice shots of Oliver... (Louis Wu 02:43:20 UTC)

More movies at CollegeHumor (and elsewhere)
Lots of College Humor links today... folks went searching. (First off: that GTA vid we mentioned yesterday can be found at its home site, as well - thanks, Austin Wilkinson. And while we're on the subject of GTA remakes... Fbu pointed out that he made his own version a couple of months ago, on KoTHalo.com.) Uber Hax0r sent us a link to Napoleon Halo-mite, a remake of a Napoleon Dynamite scene in Halo. This, too, can be found on its home site - and was first pointed out on our forum by Corgana, a couple of weeks ago, who ALSO found it on collegehumor. And LeaveMeAlone117 sent us a link for a Nike Just Do It spoof (which was actually posted on our forum by nash--housewares on April 1, but I was a bit busy preparing for a LANfest, and missed it). Wonga. (Louis Wu 11:02:14 UTC)

Resurrection Recap, Part 1
The first few writeups of the lanfest here are posted - nukedude put up a bunch of pics, KP blogged it, goatrope got in on the action. I'm sure there'll be more (I've even got some stuff of my own to write this time around)... but this is a decent start. (Louis Wu 10:52:55 UTC)

UK LAN event in February
Yayap the Grunt pointed out yet ANOTHER event - this one isn't a tourney, it's a LANfest, in Wales - but there's a door fee (it's held in a commercial venue). There'll be several games; Halo is one. Check out the details on the Frag Fest Wales page. (Louis Wu 13:26:14 UTC)

Story Boarding.
akba points out that after a long quiet spell, Adventures in Disaster is back - with a new strip by Boxer, celebrating a lanfest that happened here about 2 weeks ago. In fact, they're SO back that they've invaded One One Se7en... or something. (Louis Wu 16:20:40 UTC)

More Crisp Death
MrFluffyPants has turned in a writeup of the Crisp Death lanfest last weekend - you can find it (with pictures and everything) over at the Junkyard. Extra bonus - no pics of me. :) (Louis Wu 20:50:54 UTC)

To the Bottom of Truth and Reconciliation
c0ld 'Sisyphus' vengeance has started a new contest; if you can get to the bottom of Truth and Reconciliation, on Xbox and with no modding, you can win a copy of the mosaic poster (97k) recently displayed at the Crisp Death lanfest here, plus a copy of Halo 2. Good luck! (Louis Wu 13:35:59 UTC)

More LAN pics
More Crisp Death pics - clarksbrother put up all the pics he took (137 of them), and Konrad posted a bunch, with comments. KP wrote up his experience (an astounding amount od driving for the cause), including a scan of the original Mister Chief Blueprint, a one-of-a-kind piece showing where Frankie started, and Dan Chosich added a teaser for the footage he collected (sounds cool!). Dizzy seems to have spent the majority of the lanfest chatting on AIM or IRC. More writeups might on the way. (Louis Wu 14:01:44 UTC)

Junkies MegaBattles
Konrad, a regular at HBO Junkies' lanfests, has recreated some memorable scenes from events held here over the years, in Megabattle style. (If you've forgotten - or never learned - what a Megabattle pic is all about, just search our news.) Now, you might not have any real context for the moments themselves (most people reading this have never been to a lanfest here), but the pics are pretty cool in their own right. Check 'em out! Seventh Column to undergo major changes
Ouch. There's a long story over on Bungie.net, talking about the long-awaited upgrade to the Seventh Column; starting next Tuesday, it'll be down for 1-2 weeks for the upgrade, and when it comes back, there'll be lots and lots of changes. This is bad news for the HBO Junkies, which was actually using one of the features slated for the chopping block (the Events database) for a big upcoming lanfest... but hey, we'll manage, I guess. First heads-up for this came from SPARTAN-01110101. (Louis Wu 04:27:05 UTC)

Fall Foliage: Crisp Death
Normally, I wouldn't put this on the front page... but it's the best way of making sure everyone who needs to see this will. The next HBO Junkies lanfest has been scheduled for October 2, 2004; details (and instructions that EVERYONE WHO WANTS TO ATTEND MUST FOLLOW) can be found on the HBO Junkie's Events page at b.net. I'm already overwhelmed with how many people want to come... so don't sign up unless this is really something you can make it to. (Even if you DO sign up, please understand that I'm gonna have to turn away at least half the folks who sign up; nothing's guaranteed. I wish I had a bigger house... but I don't.) Cool Threads
Finn, half of our stalwart Halo Story Page crew, writes to let us know that there are 3 super-cool Team 7hr33 sweatshirts left unclaimed by 7hr33 members... which means you can buy these puppies for yourself. I have one, and I gotta say... it's slick. (Check out pics from last spring's Knee for All lanfest to see me wearing it.) (Louis Wu 13:36:56 UTC)

Lots and Lots and LOTS of 2v2 footage
(GT)Juggler points out that he's got tons of 2v2 footage on the HaloGT website (redesigned and overhauled, by the way); all the individual matches from the 2v2 mini-tournament that happened at the Dead Babies LANfest a few weeks ago are online on his media page. The 9 regular films have no sound (though they still average over 20 mb each), and the 3 finals have sound, and are a bit meatier. Go see what you can grab! (Louis Wu 11:45:19 UTC)

Dead Babies on Film
(GT)Juggler put together a nice reminiscence of the Dead Babies lanfest held in Connecticut recently; it's 4:15 long, 32 mb big, in QT format. You can grab copies from either Mythica.org or files.bungie.org. For the record - though my name appears on a number of scoring screens, I wasn't present... though the video makes me wish I had been. LAN flavor, gameplay, modded levels... this one had it all. Check it out! (Louis Wu 04:29:12 UTC)

Easy way to win?
Konrad points out a pretty strange glitch that surfaced at the recent Dead Babies LANfest; the movie is truly crappy quality, and 7.4 mb in QuickTime format, but it shows KP racking up points in a slayer game by committing suicide. Can't say that I've ever seen this before... (Louis Wu 19:13:59 UTC)

nof's LAN, through GT eyes
(GT)Juggler has put together a vid commemorating the recent UCDI LANfest held in northeastern Connecticut a couple of weeks ago. It's 3:12 long, 36.3 mb large, in QuickTime Format. Grab a copy from HaloGT.com. (Louis Wu 19:12:03 UTC)

You, Your Crew, Halo 2 - Do the Dew.
Holy Last Minute Coolness, Batman! Bungie and Mountain Dew have teamed up for a fantastic contest; submit the winning photo showing you and your friends playing Halo and drinking Mountain Dew, in the next 5 days, and you could find yourself at Bungie Headquarters for a promotional photo shoot and a Halo 2 LAN party. Yes, you read that right - a Halo 2 LANfest for you and your buds. Go read all the rules - and get cracking; entries that aren't received by Midnight, Eastern Time, this coming Wednesday, are not eligible. (Remember, also, that you need to be able to get yourselves to Redmond, Washington, on July 17; transportation is not included. And you need to be 18 or older.) (Louis Wu 21:41:19 UTC)

Everybody loves eggs
Hehe - Pico has found an egg in the recently-announced SP-to-MP conversion of AotCR, by nukedude... and while it was designed to be unattainable without cheating, nukedude has stated that there IS a way to get it (but he won't tell anyone how). Can YOU find the way? Personally, I'm more interested in the concept of a melee-only weapon in GENERAL - creating a map with ONLY this weapon would enforce the melee-only gametype we try (using the honor system) at local lanfests. (Louis Wu 08:14:48 UTC)

UCDI wrapup
Konrad reminded me I forgot to post links to pictures taken at last weekend's lanfest. (They weren't very exciting... but hey, there were a bunch of HBO regulars there, so...) You can find a set from GT(Juggler) here, and another set from Konrad here. Funny comments from MIguel (who didn't make it) on the GT shots. (Louis Wu 22:02:43 UTC)
