September's 360 - a Halo fest
We occasionally post magazine scans of Halo articles, though we never post stuff before the issue's off the newsstand shelves, and we never post stuff from magazines that have specifically asked to be removed from our site. One thing that hasn't happened before, though, is that until now, we have not been contacted by a magazine and asked to show off some of their Halo content before it's available for purchase at your local retailer. 360 Magazine, in the UK, changes that for us. Staff writer Gavin Mackenzie contacted us about their upcoming Halo Special Collectors Issue, due on newsstands on September 6 (that's next Saturday). They're in the UK, but Barnes and Noble in the US will carry these as well (though likely later than September 6). He sent along the cover for the article, as well as teasers for some of the Halo content (one | two). Even the parts of the magazine that have nothing to do with Halo have a Halo theme - check out the design of the Reviews section this month. If you're somewhere you can buy this - you should. Looks like it'll be a fun read! (Louis Wu 13:33:34 UTC)

Advertising reaches your blades
A long layover in the Detroit airport means time for Halo updates. Some tidbits from our forum... looks like Microsoft has released a free 360 theme based on Mountain Dew Gamer Fuel (along with Gamerpics) - thanks, Darknesshasfallen and KP. Yes, I think it's silly, too - but it's free. (Louis Wu 23:08:22 UTC)

Special Edition Tags and Theme
Tural noticed some cool new Halo 3 Special Edition Gamerpics, as well as the Special Edition Theme (scroll to the bottom) - they're listed as 'free', but it's unclear if they're exclusively for the Special Edition or not. (Louis Wu 23:30:04 UTC)

Grunt Hunt
Sam M let us know that he's working on a game called 'Grunt Hunt' - it's basically a Halo-themed version of Duck Hunt. It'll be available later this month from his website, for both WIndows and Mac, and you can see a video showing how it plays at YouTube now. (Louis Wu 14:03:10 UTC)

Halo Themed iGoogle Skin
NovusVir let us know that he's created a Halo-themed iGoogle skin; if you want your customized iGoogle page to reflect your favorite video game, check it out! (He says the gadget is safe; I have no way of confirming that, so use at your own risk. Google says that malicious gadgets can steal cookies and such.) (Louis Wu 12:15:58 UTC)

Halo 3 Themed Xbox 360
One story we didn't get to yet involves the release of a Halo 3-themed Xbox 360. You can see pictures of it at Bungie.net right now, and there'll be a full article about it later today, but the basics are a small (20GB) drive, gorgeous Halo 3 styling, an HDMI port, and an undisclosed price. Reception has been mixed; many commenters are surprised it isn't coming bundled with Halo 3, and others are unhappy it doesn't have an HDMI cable included. It remains to be seen how things go once the price comes out. (Louis Wu 17:15:27 UTC)

Kurt's Theme - in MP3
Last week, Sean Mortensen released a MIDI file of a new piece he'd created to honor Ghosts of Onyx. Today, we received an MP3 version of the work - it sounds a bit different, according to Sean. 5.3 mb - give it a listen! (Louis Wu 14:58:50 UTC)

Bungie Day Goodies
In celebration of Bungie Day, Bungie has released a whole bunch of fun stuff for you to play with; some of it is available through this article on Bungie.net, and some of it is available only through Xbox Live Marketplace. The article contains links to a new desktop picture (which contains a teaser at yet ANOTHER new armor variation), along with articles about the Brute Chopper, the Close Quarters Battle Spartan armor, and the Extra Vehicular Activity Spartan armor. (The latter three articles all contain QuickTime VR movies of the items in question, so you can get nice 360-degree views.) On XBL Marketplace, you'll find a special Bungie Day Theme, and a set of new Gamer Pics, both as free downloads. (For the benefit of those without access to Marketplace during the 22 hours that this particular content is up, I've posted screenshots on our forum.) Finally, the Blastacular Map Pack (Desolation and Tombstone) will be available for free starting today. (It's unclear at what TIME that will happen - but never fear, if you haven't downloaded the maps yet, you'll be able to do so at no cost sometime today.) Go revel in the goodness! bs 'Hawty McBloggy' angel writes about another Pavel Dolgov Halo-themed faceplate - a friend of hers commissioned the artist to create a Clan-related faceplate, and the end result is pretty nice! Check it out. (Louis Wu 11:51:51 UTC)

Kurt's Theme
Sean Mortensen sent along a piece of music (MIDI format, 139 kb) he wrote as a score for a section of Nylund's 'Ghosts of Onyx', because he was inspired by the book. He knows it sounds a little like the Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End score, but says that is coincidence more than anything. If you're interested in an MP3, you can email him with a request, and he'll post it. (Louis Wu 12:10:00 UTC)

Friday's Fan Fiction
Fourteen new pieces for you in this week's Fan Fiction update (back to multiples of 7...), including a piece that has its own soundtrack. There was some confusion about the originally-submitted theme for Vanguard - turns out it was very, very close to another piece of music - so Sean Mortensen submitted a new version (midi format, 38k). Go listen to it while reading the story! (Louis Wu 13:26:01 UTC)

Two new midi creations
Sean Mortensen sent us two new midi themes - both are rather martial. One, Ashes, is based on the Halo main theme (and Sean gives props to Marty once again). The second, Vanguard, was written entirely by Sean, and was designed to be the theme for his upcoming fan fiction, 'Halo: Operation Vanguard' (this will be posted on Friday, in the standard Fanfic update). Since they're midi files, they're tiny - Ashes is 10k, Vanguard is 31k. Go listen! (Louis Wu 12:35:57 UTC)

Man Cannon
Trunks stopped by to point out a new Halo-themed Trunks and Soto comic - I'm not sure their term for the Mancannon is any less... snicker-worthy than Bungie's, but you gotta love the t-shirt! (Louis Wu 11:40:27 UTC)

VGL - in Connecticut
Last night, I was lucky enough to find myself at the Video Games Live concert that was performed at Yale University's Woolsey Hall. Great music, for a couple of hours... and then the piece de resistance - the standard Halo theme, followed immediately by the Halo 3 'Finish The Fight' piece. Miguel Chavez was able to get these two pieces on film - well, on his digital camera. Quality is limited, of course (what can you expect from a digital camera?) but it still is worth watching. Almost 8 minutes, 22 mb in QuickTime or WMP9 formats. (He also put up a copy at YouTube.) (DHalo, from our forum, was there too - he wrote up his account, as well.) Check it out! Update: And now Miguel's writeup. (Louis Wu 22:21:38 UTC)

Custom Halo Theme in Guitar Hero II
In early April, Guitar Hero II will be released for the Xbox 360, and speculation has it that the Halo theme will be available for play (possibly as an unlockable). Someone didn't want to wait - over at GameTrailers, you can see a custom version of the song done on the PS2 version of the game. Pretty cool! Thanks, MasterChief2829. (Louis Wu 15:29:03 UTC)
