Phoenix-inspired artwork
Since the announcement that Bungie's secret project known as Phoenix has been shelved, the artwork has begun to pour in. We started by placing it in our Miscellaneous Art section... but it's clear that it has the potential to crush that section, and it's not particularly Halo-related. We've therefore added new additions (as well as recently submitted pieces that are already in our Misc. Art section) to phoenix.bungie.org... and will continue to add new pieces there as they're submitted. Minimalist interface; the art is the thing. Hope this works for everyone! Screens Bonanza
Recently, Bungie posted the eighth chapter of their Legendary Walkthrough at the Tru7h and Reconciliation site. It included a whole passel of the now-legendary (hehe) Bungie-quality screenshots to illustrate the text. We've added these to our Screenshots database; you'll find the 43 shots shown on that page, plus 9 others that didn't make the cut. Go crazy! (Louis Wu 03:09:28 UTC)

The Bungie Boys are Busy
Boatloads of new content at Bungie.net... on top of yesterday's system upgrades, we now have a Legendary walkthrough for Two Betrayals (with almost 50 new screenshots - and more if you know where to look) and an article entitled 'So You Want To Be a Programmer', written by Michael Evans, a programmer on the Halo team. Go read it all! (Louis Wu 01:31:51 UTC)

Artwork part 2 and a new policy
Three new images for our Miscellaneous art collection this time around. Folks: during the past few days, we've received a huge number of art submissions. Some of them we received more than once. Again - if you don't see your image online in a day or so after submission, feel free to send us email asking us whether we got it... but PLEASE don't resend the image unless we say we didn't. Also: if you're going to start with Bungie artwork, and add a line of text... or paste a character from another game onto it with no attempt at actually combining the images... we're going to decline to host it. The overall quality of submissions in recent weeks has dropped precipitously (with several very notable exceptions) - people seem to be encouraged to send in barely modified existing work by seeing other barely modified existing work actually get posted... so from this point on, we're going to be a bit more selective about what we post. This is not to say you must be a great artist; it's just to say that in order for us to display your work, we have to be convinced it's YOUR WORK. (More than half of the submissions this week aren't getting posted for this reason.) I hope this makes sense to everyone. (Louis Wu 14:00:21 UTC)

Is that an MC in your pocket...?
Got an iPAQ, Jornada or a T-Mobile Pocket PC Phone? Want a Master Chief theme for your Today Screen? Thanks to Jack Ash, you can grab one from our Miscellaneous Art section. Cool! (Louis Wu 04:18:52 UTC)

AIM Halo theme available
SpikeDaDragon has created a new Halo Expression for AOL Instant Messenger. If you know what this is (or if you use AIM and would like to know what this is), visit Spike's site and download the file. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a preview of it anywhere, so if you don't have AIM (or aren't willing to modify files without seeing the results first), you're out of luck. Update: There's a screenshot now, so you can see what you're getting into. (Louis Wu 12:14:54 UTC)

New screens finally posted
Our Screenshots database has been updated with the X02 screenshots released a couple of weeks ago, and some images released by gamesradar.com, the web arm of Edge Magazine's parent company. (The X02 shots are high resolution... but the gamesradar shots are lower-res scans. If you can get hold of the magazine, you're better off.) (Louis Wu 16:42:56 UTC)

A weekend of editing
Lots of art bits submitted recently. We'll start with the miscellaneous art - there's an airbrushed MC, a Halo box, and an MC with a sword, from XAL, Jack Smith, and Chris, respectively. You'll find these in our Miscellaneous Art section. And then there's a new banner in our Banners section, and two new logos in our Logos section, all courtesy of Michael Frank. Heh - that should clear out the inbox for a few minutes... (Louis Wu 15:11:46 UTC)

Um... is that what Jason meant?
Ritalin turns in a "screenshot from an older build of the Halo 2 engine". We've tossed it in our Miscellaneous Art section. (Louis Wu 12:51:20 UTC)

German Halo 2 Preview at PC Games Portal
Mick points out a new Halo 2 preview (in German) at PC Games Portal. I don't read German, but a Systran translation suggests there isn't anything here that wasn't discussed in Edge or EGM magazines, or on the web. Still, I find it interesting that the preview cycle has already started up. Check it out! (Louis Wu 18:53:16 UTC)

Shrink or Die
Blackstar has updated the Work or Die video he posted 2 weeks ago to be a bit more bandwidth-friendly; it's now 24.4 mb (the screensize was reduced to 480x360 to keep image quality up). If you haven't downloaded this yet because it was too big, go grab it now... and watch me get killed over and over and over and over and... (The Movies database has been updated with the new info.) Info, bay-bee...
Thanks to the eagle eyes of Jerry, who noticed the cool new link at the top of the bungie.net main page (right corner). It contains quick links to all the useful info so far published on Halo 2 - press releases, links to the trailer, goodies like screens and desktops... keep it handy! (Louis Wu 01:29:54 UTC)

Screenshots for sale
Its lack of useability was getting on my nerves... so the Screenshots Database has been overhauled. It's also been brought up to date. Feel free to browse through it, and if you run across any glitches or anomalies... please, let us know. I can't fix it if I don't know it's broken. There are shots here you won't find linked ANYWHERE else - and that's a promise. :) (Louis Wu 13:52:39 UTC)

OSX, too.
Yesterday, we mentioned a Windows screensaver created by a Halo fan that played QuickTime movies. PCDestroyer points out that something similar exists for MacOSX - the reviews are mixed, but it's there if you want it. (24k, so it's not even a painful download.) (Louis Wu 01:07:12 UTC)

Windows QT screensaver
Ciarán has created a Windows screensaver that uses the Halo 2 trailer (in QuickTime format) - or any other QuickTime movie - as its source. It's been tested on Windows 2000, Windows NT, and Windows XP Home. It weighs in at 1.5 mb - you can find it here. (Louis Wu 15:36:42 UTC)

I hate it when that happens...
Adam Russin and Brian Rosenberg have created a film called 'Oh Shit!' I'm too tired to figure out if it meets our Movie Posting Guidelines - but I enjoyed it, so I'm posting it. So there. It's only available in .wmv format, unfortunately - it's 3:18 long, and 12.5 mb big. You can get it at Project Mjolnir, where it was posted first, or you can grab a copy from Mythica.org. Tomorrow, I promise, I'll get cracking on the movies that need to be added to our Movie Database. (We have news of several other movies that have been made recently; it's all been backburnered due to the obscenely high demand for the Halo 2 trailer, but we're going to start letting you know about some of it in the near future.) In the meantime, go watch this film... it's fun. :) (Louis Wu 02:21:45 UTC)

It says Kilroy Was Here, okay?
Okay, I'm doing this for my own sanity. Ever since the release of the Halo 2 screenshots a few weeks ago, there's been quite a bit of discussion about the writing on the side of the assault rifle carried by the MC in this picture. (Here's a very nice closeup, handily enhanced by Storm Singer.) I'm sick to death of seeing it misinterpreted as 'RAT' or 'KAT' in our forum, and in email - the english text reads 'Kal 9.6 mm x 40' - 'Kal' being short for the german 'Kaliber'. This has been confirmed by Bungie, so please - no more rats. (We've even added it to our FAQ, to make life easier for those looking for the tru7h.) The chinese characters translate roughly to 'Monkey King', according to several different people on our forum... but nobody's actually pinned down the significance of this yet. Hopefully, this information will allow me to get back to the very important work of cleaning my toenails without having to hear about RATs. Thanks. (Louis Wu 00:37:01 UTC)

Neo says 'whoa.'
Thought it was all scripted, eh? No in-game play, eh? Check out this multiplayer screen - a covenant warrior stalks the MC. Thanks to our spy in the field, Warbow.(j/k) Okay, okay... Apparently, not enough of you noticed the little (j/k) after that post - sure, it was in white text, and too small to be readable, but why let that stop you? This is just a doctored shot by Warbow - there isn't really a multiplayer build out there (yet). There, happy, Dave? :) (Louis Wu 17:27:06 UTC)

MPEG version, more QT mirrors
Assassin, from Computer Games in Romania, has sent word that they've re-encoded the high-quality QT version as an MPEG. Screensize is the same, filesize is 25.5 mb... quality is quite good. If you're having trouble with QuickTime, but can't get WMP9 to run on your system, this might be the way to go! (Server speed was quite impressive for me, too.) Also, Fileplanet added the two QuickTime versions this morning. All of these links are listed on the Mirrors page. (Louis Wu 16:37:52 UTC)
